HOTEL SPROUT based on the giving tree by shel silverstein

4

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein follows the story of a boy and tree. In the beginning, the boy and the tree are content and love each other very much. As the story goes on, the boy grows older and begins to ask the tree for various things to take away, such as apples, branches and it’s trunk.

In the end, the tree is nothing but a stump. However the boy, (now an old man) asks the tree for one more thing, which is a place to sit and rest.

Second Floor Lobby

Hotel Sprout explores the various novelties in the children’s story The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The intent of the hotel is to show the loving relationship between the boy and the tree. In the center of both the first and second floor lobby space is a kinetic lighting fixture that oscillates leisurely throughout various moments of the day. The soothing movement from the lighting fixture represents the beating of the heart. This element also has the ability to change the colors, which adds another dimension of color to the almost monochromatic space. My intention for the hotel is to convey a very joyous atmosphere. Implementing the rings of the tree stump into the ceiling with dangling light fixtures spreading throughout the space.

Second Floor Lobby overlooking the First Floor

Various pieces of furniture are used within the space, including the infamous wishbone chair and specified pieces from Lignet Roset designers. I wanted the furniture to have a very organic appeal but to also convey minimalism and whimsy. Therefore, I chose round voluminous pieces. Throughout the story, Silverstein continually references the parent-child relationship between the tree and the boy. However the reader can interpret the message in multiple ways. Simularly, my intent for the Hotel Sprout very little material, but allows for multiple interpretations.

A typical bedroom in Hotel Sprout is meant to be a very subtle and detailed in its reference to the book. The room is a fun sized expression of the hotel lobby but in a very unique and compressed interpretation. My intention was to mirror the various attributes of the lobby that took inspiration from the book while incorporating aesthetic and forms in a more condensed intimate space.

My inspiration for the enchanted forest library comes from the various tv shows, movies, and books that inspire wonder among children. The feeling of walking through an actual magical forest where trees and colors jumped out at you as a child.

The library spaces have special Infinite Color+ Lighting fixtures that transitionally changes through various periods of the day. Lighting during the day is warmer while night colors are more cool and vibrant. These subtle changes reflect the feeling of being in an actual enchanted forest.

Mushlites, furniture Throughout the library are featured Mushlites. There are six in total with 5 main fixtures located in the adjacent work station area. The furniture brings light to the space, and some even feature seating and a book display.

Mushlite furniture is derived from the idea of bringing an enchanted atmosphere to the library through whimsical forms that are functional. Mushrooms are typically used in children’s television shows to provide a delightful background. They often come in a variety of colors and functions, and sometimes serve as a backdrop for the cartoon.

George C. Tilyou’s “Funny Face” has become a prominent symbol for Coney Island throughout the years beginning in 1908. Tilyou was owner of Steeplechase Park, one of the three competing amusement parks inhabiting Coney Island. The other two were Luna Park and Dreamland. Carnival guests were greeted by Funny Face upon arrival at the carnival’s gate.

Reading Room

Coney Island shows a explorative way on how to interpret design. Using various media in combination with circulation and concept, I was able to utilize a theme-driven common area to be used by the retired Coney Island Carnies of Brooklyn, NY. The shared public space comes complete with a living area, a reading room, a flexible dining room/ bar, kitchen, laundry room, and a private office.

Dining Room

The dining room area of the common space, gives a more airy dream like feeling. The space is meant to be used for multiple guests where you have the option of either dining with a friend or being alone by yourself at the bar. Towards the back of the room the space can be interchangeable and has a multipurpose function similiar to a stage.

Apart of the dining room area is the Charles Loof’s constructed Balmer’s Carousel, Coney Island’s first amusement park ride. one of the very first carousels in the world. The Danish woodcarver constructed many of the main features apart of the carousel including the handcrafted horses and animals. Charles Loof also went on to contruct over 40 carousels and several amusement park rides across America.

Specialty/Dilation For the eye care clinic, the design uses the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow to give information to the consumer. It’s these colors that make up the white light that we see. The colors and the grid are the inspiration behind the De Stilj movement.

The eye care facility is approximately 9700 square feet. The challenge of designing such a space was how to utilize and separate each wing to service different clientele. My main goal was to make sure each space of the plan made sense in regards to the overall circulation of the building. The public spaces being more open to the patrons giving a grandeur appeal but to also act as a lobbying/gallery-like area so that there is a since of uniformity or operation that goes on as apart of the facility. Upon entering the main lobby entrance, the customer is directed to the reception desk directly in front of them. Above the front desk are various symbols with their corresponding color. Each color represents a different area of operation with a symbol of each treatment of area of the building.

A prominent feature of the lobby area is the education area. In the education area is a ever-changing OLED screen that presents various information and details concerning the eye. This includes promo information for up and coming products, as well as, information concerning different types of eye infections and ways to take care of those infections should the opportunity present itself. The space also features a skylight and mirror. This space acts as a buffer zone, connecting the main lobby space to the adjacent optical shop for the facility.

42” OLED Digital display presents educational

The optical shop is a very dominant feature of the eye care facility. Servicing much of the customers of the facility, the retail space sells contacts, contact solution, eyewear, and various medicinal products relating to the eye. The purpose of the shop is not only act as a place for consulting for eyewear but to also bring in additional revenue for the business without overshadowing the business itself. It was my intent to give the optical shop a more different appeal than the main doctoral areas. The optical shop acts as the face for the building brining in new customers while also servicing the optometrist offices throughout the facility. The space also is a nod to the De Stilj movement’s color and innovation.

With the recent global warming crisis, emperor penguins located just off the coast of Antartica, become more and more scarce. Not only due to the changes in temperature but some even fall victim to the predators located throughout the habitat.

Creating a sense of play but remaining true to the atmosphere of the clients, constructing a structure with a viable form for our playful friend was indefinite. I wanted the structure to be platonic but also give a sense of amusement and wonder for the penguin. Inside the structure is a ramp that leads up to a balcony where the penuin is then able to use the outdoor slide.

COMPETITIONS & ADDITIONAL WORKS

72

Community service projects provide a unique oppurtunity for growth within the field. Utilizing teamwork outside of both school and work, I was given leadership role as co-captain for our Baltimore Canstruction project. Our team was awarded for structural ingenuity. The team created various proposal designs in order to fit the budget and donations we’ve received. In the end, after accomplishing our structure, over 3,000 canned goods were donated to the Maryland Food Bank.
