Leadership Letter Many of our supporters like you receive Tuesday’s Tidbits, the weekly emailed newsletter that provides updates about activities at the Center. I usually peruse it quickly, but recently, my jaw dropped because the newsletter revealed that 75 children were seen and received services at the Child Advocacy Center during the week of February 23-28. Ten kids were under the age of three. Fifteen of those were crisis calls. Just like I’m sure you do, I immediately think about what those children must have experienced and how grateful I am that our community provides them a safe and child-friendly place to have their voices heard.
I also think about how difficult a week like that undoubtedly is on the people who work at CAN’s Children’s Advocacy Center. Everyone at CAN and our partner agencies are already stretched so thin. These professionals have dedicated their work to helping children in the midst of abuse allegations, and as a community we continue to ask more and more of them. What we once hoped was a blip in the increased number of children CAN serves has proven to be our new reality: in Fiscal Year 2011, we saw 1,947 children. Since then, numbers have hovered around 2,500. In Fiscal Year 2014, 2562 children were served. The good news is that the Tulsa Community has listened and responded with wonderful support, which is needed now more than ever. As a United Way partner, CAN has the opportunity to participate in the Tulsa Area United Way’s Day of Caring. On September 5, 2014, we were lucky to welcome 200 QuikTrip employees who volunteered to provide an incredible facelift to CAN’s facilities. You may recall in 2013, CAN’s administrative staff moved into the gymnasium to make room at the Center; QuikTrip built offices and conference facilities for them in this space. Their volunteers re-painted the Center, did landscaping and fence repair, installed new signage, and re-did bathrooms. What an amazing donation and morale booster! CAN and its partner agencies are so grateful to the generosity of the United Way, QuikTrip and its employees. The last six months have also seen an incredible community response to CAN’s two fundraisers the CAN Superhero Challenge, a family-oriented obstacle course run on March 29, 2015, and the CANdlelight Ball, an elegant black-tie fundraiser that will occur on April 25, 2015. These two events keep CAN’s staff and volunteers very busy, but the results are worth it in terms of raising funds, raising awareness, and solidifying positive relationships with CAN’s wonderful donors. CAN continues to be the only non-profit in Tulsa that provides child abuse intervention services. Along with our partner agencies, we continue to utilize our resources in the most efficient way possible to provide services to as many children as possible. Although the work is hard, the Center is a place of hope for the children we serve. Without your generosity, the 1 in 17 children who is involved in a DHS abuse investigation or assessment in Tulsa County each year would not have a safe place to be heard and to start healing. The numbers are staggering, and they appear to be our community’s new reality. Thank you for responding and for your continued assistance and support.

Mission: To provide collaborative intervention services to child abuse victims, so that they are encouraged to embrace a future driven by hope. Philosophy: Child abuse damages our community’s most vulnerable citizens and often has generational implications. In the context of violence, child abuse is a public health problem that presents complex social and moral dilemmas concerning its cause, effect and remedy. THANK YOU, QUIKTRIP! On Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, over 200 employees from QuikTrip volunteered for the Tulsa Area United Way’s Annual Day of Caring at CAN. Volunteers showed up at 7 a.m. that morning and didn’t leave until 5:30 p.m. that night. Projects they worked on included: landscaping, painting the Center, repairing and painting the fence, organizing storage in the gym, building cubicles for the administration staff in the gym, putting down carpet and moving furniture. View photos from the Day of Caring projects on the CAN Facebook page (facebook.com/childabusenetwork). Watch a YouTube video produced by Cal Findeiss on the CAN website (childabusenetwork.org). Leaving a Legacy Through Planned Giving
Child Abuse Network deeply appreciates our supporters who have chosen to include our organization in their family’s charitable giving strategy. There are many strategies for planned giving, including listing a charity as a recipient of a life insurance policy or estate planning. Most people have questions about planned giving, which can be a daunting process. CAN provides a no-cost planning service for those who would like more information about planned giving, how to start the process, or simply want to have their current plan reviewed. To speak with one of our planning professionals, please call (918) 624-0201.
