Leadership Letter The 2012-2013 fiscal year may have come to an end on June 30, but the need for CAN in the community continues to grow. Twenty-five years after the Child Abuse Network was established, the number of children served keeps increasing. CAN provided services to another record 2,499 children at the Justice Center. Successes to highlight in 2012-2013 are: 2nd annual CANdlelight Ball raised $282,188. Opened the doors to two additional waiting rooms created in the Justice Center. This fiscal year, CAN’s managing director and child specialists provided over 30 community education presentations regarding child abuse and neglect, reaching over 750 individuals. The CAN Appreciation Day sponsored by Clear Channel Radio touched thousands of lives and raised $21,564. I want to offer my personal thanks to last year’s Board President, Mike Rhoads. So much of CAN’s success this year was directly related to his expertise, community involvement, experienced leadership skills, and his absolute dedication to CAN and its mission in our community. The 2013-2014 fiscal year is sure to be another great year for CAN. As incoming Board President, I am honored to be a part of such a dynamic and focused organization. In keeping with tradition, I’d like to share a little about myself. Family: Kevin and I have been married for 32 years. We have three beautiful daughters, Diana, Andrea and Julia, and a wonderful son-in-law, Scott (married to Diana). We also enjoy our two Bernese Mountain dogs and a cockatiel. Occupation: My Industrial Engineering background allowed me to work in cost accounting, engineering, and long range planning positions. I am currently not employed, but I volunteer my time with CAN, Holland Hall and church. Favorite book: My favorite book is usually the one I’m reading. I am currently reading The Element by Ken Robinson. Favorite music: I like lots of different kinds of music. Hobbies: I love to cook, garden, sew and play the harp. Where I grew up: I grew up in Northwest Indiana and lived there until college. Since marrying, I have lived in 11 different cities including Geneva, Switzerland, and have moved 14 times. Favorite childhood memory: I enjoyed lots of summers on the New Jersey Shore and Lake Michigan, but my fondest memories are tunneling through my front yard after a blizzard. How I first learned about CAN: A former Board member, Barbara Gardner-Anderson, introduced me to Barbara Findeiss soon after moving to Tulsa in 2004. It didn’t take more than a few moments hearing about CAN’s work to compel me to get involved. As the Planning Committee Chairperson, I was invited to join the Executive Committee as secretary both in 2004 and 2011. The years that I have been involved with CAN have been very dynamic as the Board pursued alternatives to deal with overcrowding and facility expansion. The absolute dedication of the staff at the Center is inspiring. I am honored to be a part of this much needed and well-run organization. My vision for CAN and what I would like to accomplish this year: My vision is to meet the goal of expanding the facility to better accomodate the children who need us and the staff who work there. So much of our work in launching a capital campaign will involve telling our story and reaching out to the generous Tulsa community. Additionally, much of my focus will be on strengthening the Board and engaging our new Board members. I look forward to a busy year with much to do. I am thankful that Mike Rhoads and Kala Sharp will continue to play an integral role in the year ahead. Their experience and dedication to CAN are such an asset to our Board. I recently shared this at the annual reception: “I am reminded that we must, all of us, continue to join together in support of this partnership and embrace our vision for the future so that we can continue to provide the best response for the children we serve. Twenty-five years from now, as CAN celebrates its 50th anniversary, I’d like that Board to recognize our courage and determination to break the cycle of abuse in our community by providing a well-planned expanded facility, supporting the multidisciplinary team approach, and ultimately to offer hope to the children who need us. I look forward this year with renewed confidence about our work, our partners, and our future.” I would personally like to invite you to join us. Get involved. Help the children of our community. Mission: To provide collaborative intervention services to child abuse victims, so that they are encouraged to embrace a future driven by hope. Philosophy: Child abuse damages our community’s most vulnerable citizens and often has generational implications. In the context of violence, child abuse is a public health problem that presents complex social and moral dilemmas concerning its cause, effect and remedy. Addressing child abuse requires a comprehensive plan with multiple, coordinated strategies. State law requires EVERY person to report suspicion of abuse or neglect to the Department of Human Services. Volunteers, donors, staff and CAN Board of Directors were honored at the annual appreciation reception on June 27 for their dedication and devotion to the children we serve at the Justice Center. Attendees celebrated the many milestones achieved this past year along with the 25th anniversary of CAN (est. on June 17, 1988). The highlight of the annual reception was the presentation of the CAN Distinguished Service Award. This award honors the commitment and dedication of an individual, group of individuals or organization that has made a significant contribution to the mission of CAN. This year’s award was presented to ONEOK, Pictured, from left to right: CAN Inc. for their long-term support of CAN. Kala Sharp, current board member and Executive Director Barbara Findeiss, Board Member Kala Sharp, representa- immediate past president, accepted the award on behalf of ONEOK, Inc. “Back in tive for ONEOK. 1995, ONEOK gave renewed hope for Tulsa’s abused and neglected children with a generous donation of $5,000 when CAN desperately needed it,” said Barbara Findeiss, CAN’s executive director. She continued to say, “It doubled our bank balance, and ONEOK has been a CAN supporter ever since.” For an organization that is entirely dependent on donations, this continued support is deeply valued and appreciated.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS! CAN is celebrating 25 years of giving hope to over 31,000 children in the Tulsa community! The Child Abuse Network, Inc. was incorporated on June 17, 1988, and became a four-year project of the Junior League of Tulsa. Original partner agencies included the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office, Department of Human Services - Tulsa County Child Welfare, Tulsa Police Department, Broken Arrow Police Department, Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and the Tulsa Pediatric Society. After 25 years, CAN remains the only community nonprofit that partners with law enforcement, child welfare, legal and medical professionals in Tulsa County’s child abuse response system.

Elegant. Exquisite. Memorable. Just a few of the wonderful comments we received from attendees after our 2nd Annual CANdlelight Ball. Close to 300 people attended this year’s event, which raised $282,188 for CAN and its programs. Ball Chair Adrienne Barnett, Honorary Chair Skip Teel, and the Ball volunteer committee did an outstanding job creating an evening full of awe-inspiring moments and breathtaking beauty.
