Hallie, age 14, from Denton, Texas, was diagnosed at 13 months old with Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA), a rare blood disorder that occurs when bone marrow fails to make red blood cells. The only cure for this disease is a bone marrow transplant and patients can spend years waiting for the right match.
Hallie found her perfect match at age 9. However, one month after learning her bone marrow transplant was a success, Hallie began experiencing pain in her left leg. This led to a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. When Hallie and her family learned that her leg would need to be amputated, they turned to Children’s Cancer Hospital at MD Anderson Cancer Center for her treatment. She underwent rotationplasty, a limb-salvage procedure which replaces the knee joint with the patient’s ankle, rotated 180 degrees. With the help of a specialized prosthesis, this procedure results in a patient’s ability to control running, jumping, balance, and other physical movements.
During her time in the Children’s Cancer Hospital, Hallie joined MD Anderson’s Children’s Art Project virtual art classes. This summer, she was able to attend MD Anderson’s Camp Star Trails, where she was thrilled to work on painting and drawing in the Art Barn sessions. This incredible teen understands the power of art to connect people, build awareness, and educate.
Hallie has a message for other kids coping with cancer: ”You can get through it. You can do anything you want to do.” According to Hallie, the best is yet to come.
