Bella, age 14, from Little Rock, Arkansas suffered a hairline fracture to her arm at age 12. When the cast was removed, she still had pain. What was first thought to be a ganglion cyst was identified as synovial sarcoma, one of the rarest types of cancer, which tends to occur in young adults.
Once the diagnosis was established, Bella’s parents knew MD Anderson was the best place to seek follow-up care. Since coming to the Children’s Cancer Hospital, Bella and her little brothers have been attending Camp Star Trails each summer, a week-long sleep-away camp just for kids like them. They love the opportunity to share fun times and bond with peers—kids who know what it’s like to go through treatment for cancer, or to support a brother or sister through the experience.
Despite a recent recurrence of her disease and undergoing radiation treatment, Bella is a thriving, surviving teen who loves to swim, make art, and solve puzzles of all kinds.
