Hee Haw Hooray Hee Haw Hooray features two charming stories for younger readers, featuring a loveable family of all sorts of animals, living behind the tumble-down barn on Mudpuddle Farm where everything is about to change in the most unexpected and hilarious ways! This story begins first thing in the morning, when the animals are slowly waking up to look at a dark and cloudy sky: ‘Funny,’ said Captain, Farmer Rafferty’s great big carthorse whom everyone loved and who loved everyone, ‘I don’t think I like the look of that sky at all, nor the sound of it neither, not one bit.’ Mossop, the farm cat with the one and single eye, lay curled up in his usual place on the tractor seat. He was only half awake. ‘Same sky as yesterday, Captain,’ he said sleepily. ‘And you can’t hear the sky. You worry too much. Nowt to worry about.’ And he went back to sleep again. Writing challenge Continue the conversation between Captain and Mossop about what they should do next because the sky is so dark and cloudy. You could write the conversation as a story or as a playscript. Morpurgo masterclass
Stuck for ideas?
- Use adverbs to show how the characters spoke (sleepily)
- sheep
Just like Michael Morpurgo, you could: - Use words from the part of the world where the story is set (like nowt)
- Tell the rest of the story, thinking about how Captain and Mossop might have different ideas about what to do.
In the story, lots of animals join in with their ideas. Why not try making up your own characters? Your farm might have: - cows
- ducks
- chickens - geese - pigs Can you think of anything else that might live on a farm?
