Pigs Might Fly Pigs Might Fly! tells the story of a very hot day on Mudpuddle Farm. In this extract, the animals ask Albertine the wise goose’s advice for what they should do to escape the sun: “‘Do what I do. Find a shady place, settle down and sleep. The rain will come. It always does – in the end.’ So that’s what they all did – Captain in the darkest corner of his stable, Jigger under the rhubarb leaves in the vegetable patch, Aunty Grace and Primrose side by side under the great ash tree, Egbert behind a pile of paper sacks in the barn so he could be near his lunch, and Diana right in the middle of the sunniest field because she was very very silly!”
Storytelling challenge: Can you use different prepositions to describe a scene in your story?
You should: • Think of a moment in a story where characters go to different places. Perhaps they are being chased, playing hide-andseek or splitting up to look for something. • Tell this part of the story to a partner, using different prepositions to add details to the scene.
You might: • Try writing your scene down and sharing it with other people in the class. Can they imagine where your characters are going?
Stuck for ideas? If you get stuck, perhaps you could try using one of these prepositions: • on
• through
• in
• on to
• under
• within
• over
• next to
• at
• in the middle of
• by
• underneath
• above
• close to
• near
