Kaspar Prince of Cats Johnny Trott is a bellboy at The Savoy Hotel, an expensive hotel in London. One day he is given the job of carrying Countess Kandinsky’s belongings and her cat into the hotel: I was just fixing my cap when I saw the doorman, Mr Freddie, showing the Countess in. Mr Freddie clicked his fingers at me, and that was how moments later I found myself walking through the hotel lobby alongside the Countess, carrying her cat basket, with the cat yowling so loudly that soon everyone was staring at us. This cat did not yowl like other cats, it was more like a wailing lament, almost human in its tremulous tunefulness.
Writing challenge Imagine that you are Kaspar, the Countess’ cat, arriving at The Savoy. Write the scene from Kapsar’s perspective, describing what happened, what you could see and how you felt. You might even explain why you were yowling! Morpurgo masterclass
Just like Michael Morpurgo, you could use unusual and interesting words for your description. These could be words you know already, words you think up with a friend, or words you find using a thesaurus. Remember: sometimes an unusual word is the right word and sometimes a simple or common word is right. You’re the author and you get to decide what feels right!
Stuck for ideas?
Kaspar belongs to the Countess Kandinsky, a famous opera singer. He is very used to visiting expensive hotels. Think about the things he might notice: - the furniture - the decoration and pictures - the smells of the hotel - the staff, like Johnny and Mr Freddie
