PINOCCHIO
Pinocchio is the famous story of the naughty puppet who is desperate to become a real boy, retold in his own words. In the story, Pinocchio has many exciting adventures, often getting into trouble through his own naughtiness and poor behaviour. This is an extract from the text:
Running away, I very soon discovered, has its problems. First of all it rained; it rained cats and dogs, chucked it down. And then I got hungry, tummy-gurgling hungry. On and on I ran through the rain, down country lanes, past cottages, through villages. Out of every window wafted scents of baking bread or roasting meat. But whenever I stopped to beg for a morsel of food they shouted at me, told me to go away or they’d set the dog on me. Some old man with his night cap on leaned out of his window and bellowed, ‘Get lost!’ And because I didn’t move, he threw a pail of water all over me. And then because I still wouldn’t go – he fired his blunderbuss at me. I had to leg it then, didn’t I? Writing challenge Write one of the adventures that Pinocchio has after he has run away. Write your scene in the first person, as if Pinocchio is telling the story. In the story, Pinocchio often gets into trouble because he makes the wrong choices or behaves badly. Things usually work out well when he remembers to be kind or thoughtful. He might get into an adventure through: - taking something that doesn’t belong to him - telling a lie
- not listening to a warning - not doing what he is told
