FR IE ND O R F O E David and Tucky have been evacuated from London to Devon. When a German bomber crash-lands, they find the pilots, and also find themselves helping them, even though the Germans are supposed to be the enemy. In this extract, one of the pilots is about to escape, but his colleague is too injured and ill to travel, so he must remain behind. “You will look after him, please?” he said. “He needs a doctor. You will make sure he has a doctor?” “Course we will,” Tucky said excitedly. “Course we will won’t we, Davey?” David nodded his agreement. “So he is your prisoner now,” and he felt deep into the inside of his coat and pulled out the black revolver. “You will need this,” he said, handing it to David. It was cold and heavy, heavier than David had imagined. “It is loaded, but the safety catch is on. Be careful with it, please.” David balanced it in his hand and gripped the butt, his finger curling round the trigger. “I could make you come too,” he said. “Of course, Davey.” The man nodded. “But friends do not use guns on each other.” Writing challenge Write the conversation between David and Tucky once the German pilot has left. - What will they decide to do with the injured German pilot? - Will they both agree on the best thing to do? - Will everything go to plan? Morpurgo masterclass Just like Michael Morpurgo, you could use small details to bring your writing to life or show something about your characters. It could be a gesture (a shrug or half a smile), it could be noticing something (a drop of rain or the wind blowing colder), or it could be an action (a character turning away or looking down at the ground).
