Cortical Visual Impairment

WHAT IS CVI ?

CVI is a brain-based vision condition in which the eyes may take in visual information, but the brain does not interpret what is being seen CVI commonly co-occurs with existing neurological impairments Children who have CVI often struggle in other areas of development

CVI IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

Asphyxia

Intraventricular Hemorrhage

Periventricular Leukomalacia

Stroke

CHILDREN WITH CVI:

Stare at Light

Chromosomal Disorders

Seizures

Cooling Protocol

Abnormal Neurological Exam

Have Trouble Recognizing Faces

Show Little Interest in Books

Trauma

Congenital Abnormalities

Infection, Congenital or Acquired

Metabolic Disorders

CVI is the LEADING cause of visual impairment in children & can go undetected!

Become Upset or Fall Asleep in New or Noisy Places

Mostly Notice Objects or Events Close to Them

Show Interest in a Familiar Group of Activities
