CARING FOR CHILDREN WITH CORTICAL VISUAL IMPAIRMENT (CVI)
CVI is a brain-based vision condition in which the eyes may take in visual information, but the brain does not interpret what is being seen.
WHO WE ARE:
The Pediatric VIEW Practice is a group of practitioners who have expertise in CVI. The Pediatric VIEW Practice is dedicated to help children with CVI develop and learn by: promoting awareness, identifying those who are at risk for this visual impairment, and collaborating with professionals, to improve outcomes in development and learning. We are devoted to CVI advocacy.
IF A CHILD HAS HAD ANY OF THE FOLLOWING MEDICAL CONDITIONS THEY SHOULD BE ASSESSED FOR CVI
Asphyxia
Intraventricular hemorrhage
Periventricular leukomalacia
Metabolic disorders
Chromosomal disorders
Seizures
Cooling protocol
Abnormal neurological exam
Stroke
Congenital abnormalities
Infection, congenital or acquired
Trauma
Strong attraction to toys with flashing lights
History of staring at sources of light
Interest in some colors more than others
Interest in objects only when they are moving
A preferred field of view
Difficulty looking at multiple objects together
Lack of attention to faces and people
Preference for familiar activities only
Lack of visual exploration in new places
Easily distracted by movement around them
Difficulty with pictures and books
Prefers to listen rather than look
Looks to an object only after a delay
Attention worsens in noisy environments
Often trips on objects, curbs, or stairs
Attention to objects only when they are close
Not reaching for objects, or look look away reach pattern
