WHAT ARE YOU

Thankful for?

As we approach the holiday season – after buzzing past end-of-summer cookouts, first days of the new school year, and Halloween trunk or treats – it’s hard not to look back through the year and identify special moments of gratitude. Maybe it’s a delicious apple pie that your neighbor baked for you. Maybe it’s a quick trip to the amusement park with your family. Maybe it’s a phone call from your best friend. All those memories that, collectively, fill our hearts with love and hope.

For us here at The Children’s Home, we have so much to celebrate. New board members have given fresh energy and perspectives to our collective vision. Special visitors like Gabby Barrett and local Pittsburgh football teams have brightened the faces of our hospital and daycare kids. Committed board, staff, donors, and volunteers have shared their stories with us. Our expanded family-centered therapy and family support counseling programs have empowered families to receive the holistic care they deserve. Fundraising initiatives like Tip Raffle Tuesdays, Shake Your Booties gala, and upcoming Big Heart radiothon have continued to engage and excite our supporters. The inaugural CVI conference has brought an international pediatric issue to a local stage. Adoption and Permanency has reached a milestone 13 decades of service.

We are also thankful for you, our friends. You have championed our mission, shared our spirit, and walked alongside us for 130 years. Let’s continue to celebrate together and create endless moments of gratitude and grace. Cheers!

for being a What does it mean to be a friend? Mr. Rogers once said,

NEIGHBORS are people who are close to us, and FRIENDS are people who are close to our HEARTS. I like to THINK OF YOU as my neighbor and my friend.” At The Children’s Home, we strive to be neighbors and friends to all the children and adults we meet. To us, a friend is: • A NURSE who lovingly cares for diverse children with varying medical needs – no matter their age, diagnoses, or length of stay – as if they were family. • A COUNSELOR who offers space for foster youths to share their experiences, fears, and excitement while awaiting placement with a forever family. • A TEACHER who nurtures young minds to dream big, empowers hearts to be fearless, and encourages children with complexities to believe in their own capabilities. • A CVI PRACTITIONER who embraces families and empowers them with knowledge and tools to actively change the course of their child’s life and functional vision. • A PHYSICAL THERAPIST who cheers on the little (and big) victories of a child learning to maneuver their first steps, not knowing if they would ever be able to walk. • A VOLUNTEER who returns faithfully every week to offer the gift of time and attention to precious children in the hospital and daycare. • A FELLOW COLLABORATOR, sharing information about our services whenever a community need is identified. • A DEDICATED STAFF MEMBER, making repairs, managing budgets, setting meetings, taking notes, and writing emails – to ensure the mission continues.

At The Children’s Home, to be a friend is to look through a lens of empathy. In the following story, hear from our friend Sean, whose son Cullen spent time in The Children’s Home’s Transitional Infant Care (TIC) program, now the Pediatric Specialty Hospital, in 1996. Sean shares his family’s story and why being a member of The Friends Giving Club provides an opportunity to support other families who face similar journeys. Like Sean, you too can help ensure that families at The Children’s Home receive exceptional care for their medically fragile child, free of financial burden, by becoming a monthly donor and member of The Friends Giving Club. 4

It really helped a lot and meant a lot that they would care for our son as if he was one of their own.”

The Children’s Home is honored to shine a light on our donor community, whose collective generosity drives our mission to provide holistic health care, while promoting family empowerment. “In May of 1996 our son Cullen was born two months prematurely at 3lbs and 13oz. Thankfully he was healthy but needed to stay in the hospital until he was physically able to come home and join our family. After a couple days in Magee, he was medically cleared to be sent to Transitional Infant Care (TIC) to be cared for until he was ready to go home. It was the old building on Kentucky Avenue, but it didn’t feel like a hospital, and there was a family room where we could take Cullen to share family time with him in a safe setting. The staff was wonderful throughout the entire stay. I would leave work every day and stop by TIC so that I could see my son and be the one to feed him. I remember one time when I got to TIC and a volunteer had fed Cullen before I got there, and the staff reminded them on how ‘the father likes to feed him’ and I let them know it was all okay. I just felt really great that the staff understood my needs and how my way of bonding with Cullen was feeding him. In addition, the nurses worked with us over the almost two months Cullen stayed at TIC preparing us for how to care for him when we finally got home. It really helped a lot and meant a lot that they would care for our son as if he was one of their own. I have always donated to The Children’s Home/TIC since my previous company provided that option via the United Way. Now that I have moved on to a new company and have the means, I wanted to become a Friends Giving Club member to help other families be able to feel the same love and security for their child as they wait to take their bundle of joy home.”

GI ING 28 TUESDAY NOVEMBER

There is less than one month until Giving Tuesday. On Tuesday, November 28th, Pittsburgh Magazine will host Give Big Pittsburgh, the 24-hour online fundraiser, providing a simple way for donors to support nonprofits throughout Pittsburgh.

On this GIVING TUESDAY, The Children’s Home asks for your support to reach our goal of $5,000. Each year during the holiday season, The Children’s Home makes it a priority to support all the children and families in our Pediatric Specialty Hospital, Child’s Way, Adoption, and Pediatric VIEW. What does this look like? Supporting our families means providing special meals for parents and caretakers staying in the Lemieux Family Center over the holidays while their child is in the Pediatric Specialty Hospital. It means providing gift cards to adoptive and foster parents and caretakers to ensure they have resources to celebrate the holidays. It means inviting Child’s Way daycare families to The Children’s Home for holiday celebrations with their medically complex child, just like any other daycare. It means making sure children with a brain-based visual impairment receive holiday gifts that meet their functional vision needs.

Welcome Gabby Special Visitors at .

The Children’s Home! On August 11th, Gabby Barrett and her husband, Cade Foehner, stopped by The Children’s Home before Gabby performed at the Pittsburgh Pirates game. Gabby Barrett, who is a Pittsburgh native from Munhall, and Cade Foehner were both top 5 finalists on the 16th season of American Idol. Gabby placed 3rd in the competition, and she had already won over the hearts of America and has had a prosperous career in country music. Since American Idol, her debut single “I Hope” became a top three hit on the Billboard Top 100, and she released her first studio album, Goldmine, in 2020. Family is very important to Gabby. Her family is still located in Pittsburgh, and she visits when she can. Gabby and Cade have built a wonderful life together with their music collaborations and a growing family of their own. They have 2 children, with baby #3 on the way. .

Kids of all ages at The Children’s Home enjoyed meeting Gabby and getting to spend one-and-one time with her. We want to say a huge THANK YOU to Gabby and Cade for visiting us at The Children’s Home while they were back in Gabby’s hometown. 

Meet Our Board Theresa L. Heck – Board President –

I am excited to be part of an engaged active board. With my background in pediatric occupational therapy, I can help The Children’s Home build in-house therapy, which allows us to provide comprehensive services to the children we serve.”

The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center is extremely fortunate to have such a supportive and engaged board that champion all the efforts and programs of the organization. We would like to highlight our board president, Theresa Heck. Theresa is a Pediatric Occupational Therapist and cofounded Pediatric Therapy Specialists 33 years ago. Her company provides physical and occupational therapy to children from birth to age 21. While treating the son of one of The Children’s Home’s board members, Theresa was introduced to The Children’s Home 24 years ago. She instantly felt a connection to the organization and was asked to join the board in 1999. Theresa has been a dedicated member ever since, bringing so much value to what makes up the foundation of The Children’s Home. In her free time, you will find Theresa traveling with her husband, listening to live music and enjoying outdoor sports such as skiing, scuba diving, hiking, biking, snowmobiling and snow shoeing. We are fortunate to have Theresa as our Board President. 

SPOTLIGHT:

MR. PETER

Peter Sukernek, or as the kids like to call him, Mr. Peter, is a volunteer who is willing to help wherever he is needed. Peter has been a volunteer at The Children’s Home for over 7 years and this year alone, he has accumulated over 300 volunteer hours! We had the privilege to sit down and ask Peter a few questions about his time as a volunteer at The Children’s Home.

To learn more about volunteer opportunities, visit: childrenshomepgh.org.

2—

3—

How did you get involved with The Children’s Home?

What is your favorite thing about volunteering?

What do you look forward to every year as a volunteer?

A number of years ago, the real estate firm I was with was hired to sell the old Children’s Home building on Kentucky Avenue. During that process, we toured the new building and learned about baby holders and volunteers. I knew it was something that I would like to do and put it on my retirement “to-do” list.

I enjoy holding babies, but also enjoy the interaction with toddlers and older kids.

I’m looking forward to many more years of volunteering at The Children’s Home. The staff is always so appreciative of anything I do. I feel privileged to be a volunteer and know that the time I spend there is meaningful.

When I retired seven years ago, I signed up, obtained the required clearances, and went through orientation. At that time, there were a sufficient number of baby holders, so I started in Child’s Way, which I loved and still do today. When Covid restrictions were lifted, I was asked to spend time on the hospital floors.

4—

How has The Children’s Home impacted your life? I have never been around so many wonderful, caring and kind people as those working at The Children’s Home, including the nurses, teachers, physicians, therapists, cleaning people, maintenance staff, guards, kitchen and laundry personnel, and administration. In addition to their professional competence, everyone is so nice to the kids and works so well together. It’s truly a joy to be around them.

Putting children’s needs at the center of care is what The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center strives to do in every program that is housed at The Children’s Home. In July of 2023, the Family Centered Therapy Services Program began. This roll out was more than just adding another program to The Childrens Home’s list of services. Starting The Family Centered Therapy Services was a strategic move to meet the needs of children in the Pediatric Specialty Hospital, Child’s Way daycare program and beyond. It was a decision to create a continuum of care that allows for continuity throughout all programs.

THE CHILDREN’S HOME ROLLS OUT CENTERED THERAPY SERVICES 13

The staff at The Children’s Home have watched parents champion for their children’s healthcare needs day after day. Parents of medically fragile children can become overwhelmed with their child’s coordination of care and trying to communicate with several different entities to have their child’s medical needs met throughout every week. The Children’s Home saw a need and wanted to help.

Now families are able to choose The Children’s Home for their therapy needs. Family Centered Therapy Services allow a family to have one point of contact for their child’s physician

When going through a difficult or uncertain phase of life, sometimes additional human connection, encouragement, support, and a neutral voice is needed to find peace and clarity. The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center is expanding its mental health counseling services to support those who seek healing. Our Adoption department has always been staffed with compassionate social workers who have supported birthparents and adoptive families through their adoption journeys for many years with one-on-one counseling services. Now, our counseling services will utilize this background and our staff’s expertise to reach beyond adoption centered counseling. To better reflect the expansion of the Adoption program now including counseling services, The Children’s Home is pleased to share that Our Adoption department’s title is now Counseling and Family Support Services. We have lately become the experts in our field in infertility counseling and support group, post adoption counseling, teen support groups for foster children, counseling for donor conceived individuals, surrogacy counseling and evaluation, recipient parent counseling and evaluation, and birthparent counseling. While we hope to expand largely over time, we are now excited to begin working with individuals and couples through providing counseling surrounding pregnancy loss, grief counseling, and couples counseling. Counseling and Family Support Services are also willing to provide consultations for individuals with needs outside of what is listed. 15

Innovations in Visit our website for: • More information about the conference • Resources about CVI • Details about our Pediatric VIEW services

On November 1st and 2nd we hosted our inaugural CVI conference. We . brought in leaders from around the nation to teach, talk, and collaborate on everything from evidence-based interventions to special education eligibility requirements. Practitioners, educators, parents, and clinicians moved the cortical visual impairment needle forward to advance standard practices and research. And we’ve already begun to prepare for next year’s event in October 2024.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Sharon Lehman from Sidney Kimmel Medical College

Thank you to our sponsors, vendors, presenters, and registrants for such a dynamic event!

October 24th Declared Pediatric VIEW Day in Pittsburgh On October 24, 2023, The Pittsburgh City Council proclaimed as Pediatric VIEW Day. This was an honor for The Pediatric VIEW Program, The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center, and the families of children who have CVI. The recognition validates the critical nature of the needs of individuals who have brain-based visual impairment. They are infants, children, and adolescents who can “see” but not interpret their world. It is hoped that the Proclamation issued by The Pittsburgh City Council will raise awareness of the needs of the leading cause of pediatric visual impairment and again, we thank them for the commendation. 
