SENJAGUIDE 2016/2017

WELCOME TO SENJA

THE FAIRYTALE ISLAND OF SENJA IS A NORWAY IN MINIATURE AND OFFERS SPECTACULAR SCENERY AND EXPERIENCES FOR YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE. Norway’s second largest island is full of unspoiled and undiscovered gems, which are waiting to be enjoyed. You will feel genuine and pure pleasure when you experience the Northern Lights, whales, local food and the polar light in the winter or the Midnight Sun, the splashing of the waves, white sandy beaches and majestic mountain peaks in the summer. Senja has everything you could wish to experience on a short or long visit: a section of the National Tourist Route with magical viewpoints, art and cultural experiences of a high quality, goblins and trolls and a teeming bird and animal life. 2

Senja (Northern Sami: Sážža) is the second largest island in Norway after Hinnøya (not counting Svalbard) and is located in Troms County. The island, which covers an area of 1,589.35 km², has a population of just under 8,000. It comprises of the municipalities of Berg, Torsken, Tranøy and parts of Lenvik. The majority of the population lives along the Gisund strait on the inner side the island. Senja’s largest settlement, Silsand, is situated here by the Gisund Bridge over the strait to the town of Finnsnes. GEOGRAPHY Senja is known for its diverse landscape and has been referred to as a Norway in miniature. The outer side of Senja is characterized by dramatic mountains that plunge straight into the sea, an idyllic archipelago and wonderful sandy beaches. The inner side of Senja has fertile soil and a gentle landscape of rolling hills and birch forest. In the valleys, you will discover nice villages and smallholdings. South Senja, which is characterized by coastal rocks and pine forests, is home to the Ånderdalen National Park. POPULATION Senja has a population of 7808, as of 1 January 2015. This is distributed as follows: • Berg municipality: 905 • Lenvik municipality: 4,475 - The Silsand area: 2,750 - The Gibostad area: 904 - The Stønnesbotn/Øyfjord area: 821 • Torsken municipality: 884 • Tranøy municipality: 1,544 The population includes the two smaller islands of Husøy and Lemmingvær.

INDUSTRY

ATTRACTIONS The island of Senja features several museums, the majority of which are part of the Midt-Troms Museum. These include the Sami Museum in Kaperdalen, the Hofsøy Rural Museum and Kveitmuseet͟ (the Halibut Museum) and Gammelbutikken͟ (The Old Store) in Skrolsvik. The island is rich in nature and historical attractions. For instance, you can visit the historic Senja Nickel Works at Hamn, where the world’s first hydroelectric power plant was built in 1882. The Senja Troll and Hulder Park at Finnsæter in Berg is popular with the younger visitors. 4

Naturally enough, the dominant industries in Senja are fisheries and aquaculture. Senja covers the entire ͞cycle͟ of fisheries and aquaculture. There is a graphite mine at Skaland. Other important companies in Senja includes ArtNord and Tromspotet in Silsand, which specializes in potatoes and potato products, and the stair factory in Sollia. Sollia is also home to the world’s northernmost double-glazed window factory, Nicopan AS, which has clients throughout Norway as well as exporting its products abroad. COMMERCE AND TRANSPORT The Gisund Bridge offers the residents of Senja a ferry-free road link to the mainland across the Gisund sound to the town of Finnsnes, which is the nearest town. Finnsnes serves as the commercial centre for the entire Central Troms region, including Senja. Senja also has transport connections to the other major settlements throughout the county. SENJA MATSTUDIO A CULINARY MEETING PLACE FOR FOOD ENTHUSIASTS AND NATURE BUFFS! Senja Food Studio is a place for cooking classes, celebrations and culinary experiences on the outer coast of Senja. We emphasise the total experience of nature and food in our cooking classes, and want our guests to join us in catching the fresh ingredients for at least one of the dishes on the evening menu. Fresh ingredients are in plentiful supply up here at latitude 69 ̊N. A typical event begins upon arrival at Senja Food Studio. We go through the plans for your two-day stay while enjoying a small welcome supper. We retire early and set the alarm for 08:00. After a good night’s sleep in comfortable beds, we have breakfast and prepare packed lunches before heading out to the fishing grounds. We will remain out there until we have caught enough fish for one of the dishes we will cook later in the evening, but it does not normally take long! With any luck, we will spot some white-tailed sea eagles, seals and whales. After returning from sea, we have a few hours’ rest before meeting up again in the evening for the cooking class. Some may enjoy a walk to one of our local attractions, the Senja Troll, while others may prefer a stroll along the beach, which is perfect if you enjoy collecting shells. We have plenty of space for quiet activities where guests can reflect and relax, whether you choose to walk along the beach, try sea kayaking or hike up our nearest summit, Sukkertoppen (Sugarloaf mountain). Most of these activities are just a short distance away. Bring your colleagues to the event of the year at Senja Food Studio on Norway’s most beautiful island!

THE SEAFOOD REGION SENJA THE COMMUNITY AND SETTLEMENT IN SENJA IS CHARACTERIZED IN EVERY RESPECT BY WHAT THE PEOPLE HAVE LIVED ON AND WHAT HAS BEEN – AND TO THIS DAY REMAINS – THE MAIN INCOME FOR THE RESIDENTS OF SENJA PAST AND PRESENT. The villages are situated on the outer coast, in a fjord where it is most sheltered from the elements, but still farthest out toward the open sea, as close as possible to the to the fishing grounds. To this day, there are still high levels of activity in these fishing villages and fish is still the most important resource for the Seafood Region. Traditional fisheries and aquaculture are growing industries, which is evident to everyone who visits the island.

36

At some of the companies, it is now possible to experience the production close up by prior arrangement. The Seafood Region Senja has several companies and covers the entire life cycle of the industry. We are proud to be able to demonstrate strong growth and activity in future-oriented and innovative companies right up there with the best in the world, which covers the entire Dzcycledz of fisheries and aquaculture gathered on the island.

NATIONAL TOURIST ROUTE

THE NATIONAL TOURIST ROUTE SENJA RUNS FROM GRYLLEFJORD TO BOTNHAMN ON NORWAY’S SECOND LARGEST ISLAND. THE DRIVE ALONG THE OUTER COAST OF SENJA IS A JOURNEY THROUGH A CONSTANTLY CHANGING LANDSCAPE. Tungeneset. Make a stop at Tungeneset rest area. The installation takes you across the rocks and down to the sea. At Tungeneset you can nd several impressive rock pools where the water is changed every day at high tide and quickly warmed by the sun. From here, you also have a resplendent view to the Okshornan mountain range. Architects: Code Arkitektur. Landscape architects: Aurora Landskap - Anita Veiseth.

42

Bergsbotn. Don’t forget to visit Bergsbotn, from which a breathtaking panorama opens out to the Bergsfjord and the open sea beyond. Next to the car park is a viewing platform constructed in steel and wood, from which the best photos can be taken. Architects: Code Arkitektur.

Deep fjords, glistening beaches, precipitous mountainsides and vibrant fishing hamlets define the local scenery. The road snakes uphill and downhill, in and out of fjords and through villages clinging to strips of land between the mountains and the sea. Senja offers an extraordinary experience of pristine nature. The Okshornan mountain range rises dramatically from the sea, overlooking the idyllic islets and skerries of the Bergsfjord. National Tourist Route Senja runs from Gryllefjord to Botnhamn with detours to Husøya and Mefjordvær over a total distance of 90 km. With Andøya, National Tourist Route Senja forms an alternative route to the E6 highway and the Hurtigruten coastal steamer. You arrive at Senja from the E6 via Finnsnes or by ferry from the south or the north. With the aid of the Hurtigruten coastal steamer or the ferries, the Senja, Andøya and Lofoten routes can be combined to form enthralling round trips. Along the National Tourist Route in Senja, which we like to call the “gem” of all routes in Norway, you can visit small, idyllic fishing villages with an authentic coastal atmosphere, such as Husøy, Mefjordvær, Senjahopen and Gryllefjord, experience the world’s largest troll, the Senja Troll, and Kråkeslott (the Crow’s Castle), dine in cosy cafés and participate in exciting activities in the mountains and at sea.

THE FAIRYTALE ISLAND OF SENJA

THE FAIRYTALE ISLAND OF SENJA OFFERS MAGICAL AND POWERFUL EXPERIENCES – ALL YEAR ROUND. IF YOU FOLLOW THE NATIONAL TOURIST ROUTE ALONG THE OUTER COAST OF THE ISLAND, YOU CAN EXPERIENCE STEEP MOUNTAINS AND WHITE SANDY BEACHES WHILE DRIVING ON NARROW ROADS THROUGH SMALL VILLAGES. By using all your senses, you can further enhance the sight of the wild and beautiful nature, which not even locals can get enough of. Listen to the silence, the echo resounding from the mountains and the waves crashing against the shore, or smell the salt water, the fish and the pure, clean sea air. Forget time for a while and appreciate being fully present. 48

Senja offers several culinary experiences and seafood, in particular,is well represented. The fresh ingredients are virtually harvested in the Dzbackyarddz. In addition to delicacies from the sea, you will also find game on the menu in several places. Regardless of whether you are looking for a gourmet meal or more traditional food, the food is made with tender love and care to nourish your body and soul. The local shop in the rural communities is the meeting place for the locals. This is where you will meet people who will gladly share stories of everyday life in Senja. Maybe you will be offered a cup of coffee and a nice conversation, so it’s a good idea to allow plenty of time for your shopping trip. In some places it’s possible to go out to sea on a fishing boat and take part in the everyday life of a commercial fisherman. Such trips offer a unique insight into the process from catching the fish through to production back at the factory. The type of fish caught depends on the season. In summer you can explore the island by bike, go on a sea kayaking trip, climb a hill or mountain or hike from cabin to cabin in the mountains, go on a fishing trip or be fascinated by the Midnight Sun and that the fact that it’s light around the clock. Winter highlights in Senja include spectacular Northern Lights, exotic whale watching safaris and summit ski or snowshoe climbs. Very little can compare with the feeling ofsetting off to ski or snowboard down steep mountains. Don’t forget to enjoy the view on the way down.
