Walkers meet for a cup of coffee at Musvatnet.
The closest areas in Folkeparken are specially prepared for young families and those with limited mobility. Harstad Council has strategically placed tables and benches to use freely. The park shelters (gapahuk) also seat many. The nearest gapahuk is less than 50m from the parking lot. The other 9 are positioned along the lighted routes and Fjellveien, the most used route which leads to Musvatnet (4km). The shelters are often the destination for young and old where one can meet for a chat and even a cup of coffee or to get warm by the fire. Harstad Council supplies the huts with wood for the fire/barbecue, all year. Folkeparken area is well arranged with many view points. The area is also full of berry and mushroom areas. Bergselva (river) and all lakes in the area are perfect for fishing. There is no fishing permit required at
Grunnvatnet and Harstadvatnet. Grunnvatnet has it’s own fishing wharf adapted for people with limited mobility. There are also many fine places for bathing. Grunnvatnet has a rich birdlife. Be considerate! Harstad Wilderness Centre at Heggenkollen has Northern Europe’s largest collection of stuffed animals and birds. You can also overnight here, hire a lavvo, turf hut or meeting rooms in naturally beautiful surroundings. Harstad Hiking Association hire out meeting rooms and accommodation beside the ski jumps as well as a cabin at Grønkollen (4km along Fjellveien). Harstad Horse Racing Track, the worlds northernmost racing track with all year totalisator gaming lies 2.5km from Folkeparken along the nature trail. Here you can bet on V5 and V65.
The start of Folkeparken has points for rubbish and bags for dog dirt. When you go further into the park, Harstad Council expects you to take your rubbish and dog bags back to these points. Dogs must be kept on a lead in the months from 1st April to 20th August. Show consideration all year!
During the Winter Harstad Council makes miles of ski runs. They also prepare sledging places for the children. Many runs are suitable for walking without skis. The first areas are especially suitable for young children. Toilets are open from 08.00 – 22.30 every day.
