T

he Department of Engineering Design was established in IIT Madras as its 16th Department with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching and research. The Department launched the novel dual degree programme in Engineering Design with a view to providing the much needed leadership in this area. The first of its kind in the country, the programme constitutes a B.Tech specialisation in Engineering Design and M.Tech specilisation in Automotive Engineering with a strong thrust on the modern practices of design.

E

ngineering design involves the development of a concept and a form to meet a function.

The designer has to be well versed rooted in the fundamentals of engineering and possess interdisciplinary skill sets to create cutting edge products within a competitive business environment. The design has to be aesthetically appealing yet robust; long lasting, yet inexpensive; and incorporate light-weight material, yet be sensitive to environmental concerns. This broadbased programme combines all the above aspects of design along with managerial acumen.

Real world problems can hardly be classified clearly into separate branches of engineering. A multi-disciplinary approach gives the students a multi-dimensional bird’s-eye perspective, which enables them to be visionaries in any industry that they enter. Armed with the right balance of creativity and engineering skills, the students are ideally equipped for the roles of pivotal links between various groups and a customer.

Automotive Engineering

The curriculum ensures that the students are trained to become good design engineers. The focus is always on having a solid grounding on engineering and design skills relevant to the industry

The course content covers the basics of Mechanical Engineering, the concepts of Electronics and Computing, insights into the Design Practices carried out in the Industry, and a specialization in Automotive engineering.

The broad range of courses equip the students with the skills to understand and appreciate the “complete picture” of a design, essential for any designer.

The curriculum boasts of 16 lab courses ranging from graphic art to product design, control systems and vehicle dynamics. Students gain a real–world experience of different concepts learnt in the theory classes.

The courses are structured so as to include a lot of student activity, in the form of term paper presentations and course projects. These projects vary from being both group as well as individual projects. Working in groups helps the students imbibe the skills of coordination within a team.

Internships Students The students are involved in various activities on the campus and this helps them develop a well rounded personality. The students of the department have been involved in varied activities such as aero modelling, Formula SAE, Light Music, athletics and International conferences such as the Stanford Summit.

The students have done internships with some of the companies in the industries for a period of six months.
