to the January issue!
S
o here we are at the end of 2020 and entering a new year; I am feeling that 2020 is a year to reflect on and learn from. Though we might be forgiven for wanting to put 2020 behind us without the need to re-examine events! But far from wanting to forget it ever happened, there are certain aspects of the last 12 months that deserve revisiting and prove that there are more positive things going on in the world than negative ones. The UK’s response to Covid-19 has had an unexpected upside: it has demonstrated that we have an amazing capacity for generosity and community spirit at times of severe crisis. Feelgood stories about neighbours helping neighbours, clapping for the NHS and carers, and the heart-warming campaign of Captain Sir Tom Moore regularly graced the headlines, giving us a sense that all was not lost even as we battened down the hatches for a second time. The nationwide and regional lockdowns placed a huge emphasis on local communities
and the need for people to help each other, particularly the elderly and vulnerable. Caring for others has always been part of human nature but the pressures of modern life mean it often gets pushed down the priorities list. Being forced to stay at home means we’ve unilaterally developed a new habit of looking out for one another and its one we’re apparently keen to stick with. According to a recent survey 68% of UK adults want to continue helping others even after the current crisis has passed. It seems we’re getting used to being active members of our local communities. We’ve been discovering the joys of shopping locally, nodding at strangers even as we keep our distance on long walks, litter picking in the local park, shopping for elderly neighbours and offering up surplus loo rolls. Even during the pared-down VE celebrations in May many people set up picnic tables in their front gardens and drives, waving to each other and chatting from behind garden gates and privet hedges as they drank tea or quaffed a cocktail

or two. Who can forget the images of people singing on balconies in Italy? Or that over 750,000 people signed up to be an NHS volunteer? Or the hand drawings of rainbows in windows? This renewed sense of togetherness is a boost to our mental health, so it’s one that we should all work to nurture, not just for now but long into the future. Doing good gives us a rush, making us feel good in return, reducing our own stress and improving our wellbeing. As we head into the new year we should try to remember that despite all the panic and fear that this historic global pandemic has brought, despite the uncertainty and the disruption, this crisis has truly illuminated the best of humanity. We’ve witnessed a revolution of kindness and communities coming together just when we needed it most. So all that’s left for me to say is have a very Happy New Year… let’s see what 2021 has in store for us!

ew high quality business space at the South Lincolnshire Food Enterprise Zone (FEZ) is now being marketed locally, nationally and internationally. Lincolnshire County Council has appointed Pygott & Crone to be the commercial agent for one of the region’s most exciting new developments. Councillor Colin Davie, executive councillor for economy and place at Lincolnshire County Council said: “The South Lincolnshire Food Enterprise Zone is one of Lincolnshire County Council’s most significant projects to date, and it’s progressing quickly. “Utilities and roads for the University of Lincoln’s national centre for food manufacturing
have already been installed and further infrastructure is now being put in place to provide access to the last eight plots in this phase of the development. “We are delighted to be working with Pygott & Crone who are one of our most dynamic and experienced commercial agents, to help market this prestigious development to the UK and beyond.” The South Lincolnshire FEZ is west of Holbeach and its main focus is to create bespoke space for new businesses and SMEs in the agri-tech sector, especially high-tech businesses developing cutting edge technology. Businesses interested in locating at the site can now contact Pygott & Crone for more information and to register their interest.
What will you see in Lincolnshire during the Big Garden Birdwatch? World’s largest garden wildlife survey returns, 29-31 January 2021 • Over its four decades, Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted the winners and losers in the garden bird world, and this year, the RSPB are calling on Lincolnshire residents to take part. • In 2020, nearly half a million people took part, counting almost eight million birds over a three-day period. •For many people, garden birds provide an important connection to nature and bring joy and comfort as well as being vital for our mental health and wellbeing. Hundreds of thousands of people across the UK will celebrate their love of nature and unite to watch and count the nation’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, and the RSPB are counting on Lincolnshire residents to join in too. This year, we’ve seen how important the natural world is to our mental health and wellbeing. There has been a surge in interest in the nature on our doorsteps and many people have come to rely on garden birds to bring joy and comfort in these unsettling times. This year’s event takes place on 29,
30 and 31 January 2021. Lincolnshire residents are asked to spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in their garden, balcony or local park, then send their results to the RSPB. Close to half-a-million people join in the Birdwatch every year. Just one hour every year, for the last four decades, has made the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch the largest garden wildlife citizen science project. Now in its 42nd year, 144 million birds have been counted giving the RSPB an astonishing amount of insight into how our wildlife is faring. Beccy Speight, the RSPB’s Chief Executive, said: “We know that for many people, garden birds provide an important connection to the wider world and bring enormous joy. Lockdown brought few benefits, but the last year has either started or reignited a love of nature for many people. There has been a broad and much-needed realisation that nature is an important and necessary part of our lives especially for our mental health and wellbeing. But nature needs us too.” While house sparrows and starlings may be the UK’s most commonly sighted birds, a closer look at Big Garden Birdwatch data shows that numbers have in fact dropped
4 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
dramatically since the Birdwatch began in 1979. House sparrows are down 53% while starlings are down 80%. It’s a pattern echoed by two more garden favourites, with blackbirds and robins down 46% and 32% respectively. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2021, watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three days. Only count the birds that land, not those flying over. Tell us the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see
in the hour. The parallel event RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch takes place during the first half of spring term, 6 January – 21 February 2021. This year, it celebrates its 20th anniversary of connecting children with nature in their school grounds. Since its launch, over a million school children and teachers have taken part. SHOPPERS SUPPORT LOCAL FOOD BANKS
F
ood poverty remains a growing problem across the country, and many families struggle to put dinner on the table this Christmas. In an effort to tackle this issue, shoppers were being encouraged to ‘give a little something’ over the festive season. Alongside 40 local community larders and food banks Lincolnshire Co-op encouraged shoppers to donate one item every day throughout most of December in a food bank advent calendar campaign. Shoppers were able to easily support good causes in the local
area by donating their dividend and then also following the Society’s advent calendar which suggested donating one essential item most needed by food banks each day. Captain Wendy Brown, Minister and current Food Bank Co-ordinator of The Salvation Army Food Bank in Gainsborough, says that due to the coronavirus pandemic, donations are needed now more than ever. She said: “We’re seeing an unprecedented increase in demand like never before. As unemployment has been rising, more and more families are needing help from food banks. “We’re also supported local
schools to make sure children didn’t go hungry this Christmas. At the moment, demand seems to be fourfold the previous levels. The amount of food packages we used to do in a month - we’re now doing in a week.” There’s still time to get involved and donations can be dropped off at the collection points in store when you are picking up your essentials. Alternatively, those participating from home, work, or school can save up their donations over the month and take them to food banks, community larders, or dropoff points at the end of the advent calendar campaign. Food banks in the area are
actively encouraging donors to save their contributions until early January, when donation numbers tend to decrease, and the extra help is needed most. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Manager, Sam Turner says: “We work closely with local food banks and have seen how important their hard work is, and the huge difference it makes to the community. We’ve got collection points in all our food stores so it’s easy for shoppers to donate. “We’re proud to support these vital causes and have been overwhelmed with the support from shoppers”
Surfleet fly-tipper pays the price following South Holland District Council investigation
A
West Pinchbeck man was fined last month by South Holland District Council, following an investigation into fly-tipping in Surfleet earlier in the year. The tip, which took place in July, saw bagged domestic waste disposed from a vehicle into a hedge bottom on Park Road in Surfleet. The incident was witnessed by a member of the public who reported it to the Council, who then began an investigation to identify those involved. Using the evidence available a man from West Pinchbeck was identified as the offender, receiving a £200 fixed penalty notice from the Council on 14 October, which has since been paid. Councillor Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for communities and facilities, said: “Regardless of its size or contents, we cannot and will not tolerate any form of fly-tipping in South Holland, and I am pleased that
our investigations have allowed us to identify and fine the guilty party in this instance. “Whenever our enforcement team can find sufficient evidence to bring offenders to justice they will, and I hope this sends the message that fly-tipping can prove much more expensive than using a responsible, licensed waste carrier. “It also shows the importance of the team receiving quick and detailed reports when a fly-tip does take place to allow us to gather as much information as possible. Thank you to those who helped us to find those responsible and punish them accordingly.” It is important that information about tips is shared quickly and in as much detail as possible, to allow evidence to be gathered and thorough investigation to take place. Reports can be made on the Council’s website at www.sholland. gov.uk/reportit or by calling 01775 761 161.

Advice Dealing With Rent Arrears We know that people will be finding things difficult when it comes to paying bills. Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire are seeing more and more enquiries about rent arrears. This reflects a growing concern that we are heading towards a rent arrears crisis. Figures show that, nationally, Citizens Advice are helping people with a with a private renter sector issue every two seconds – an increase of a third compared to last year. If you are struggling to pay your rent or getting behind with any of your bills, please get in touch with us as soon as you can – we may be able to help you and put your mind at ease. Here are some quick tips for you if you are having difficulty. Rent arrears are priority debts. ‘Priority debts’ are debts that can cause you particularly serious problems if you don’t do anything about them. Rent arrears are priority debts because they may lead to eviction from the property you live in. There are some steps that you can take to help if you fall into rent arrears. Check liability You might not be responsible for paying back all of the rent arrears. It’s important to check before you pay your landlord any money. This depends on what type of tenancy agreement you have, if you have taken over a tenancy, sometimes known as ‘assignment’ or ‘succession’
or if you don’t have a tenancy agreement. Check the amount owed Make sure the amount your landlord says you owe matches your own records. Have a look at your: • bank statements • receipts (if you pay your rent in cash) • rent book or rent card (if you have one) Your landlord must give you a rent book or other record of your rent payments if you have a weekly tenancy. Check you’ve kept a record of all your rent payments, and that they add up correctly. You should ask your landlord for a statement of how much rent you’ve paid if you: • haven’t kept a note of your rent payments. • think your rent book or rent card isn’t clear • can’t find your rent book or rent card
s U o t k Tal
Check if you can get benefits You might be able to claim help to top up your income. If you can get benefits but you haven’t been claiming them, you might be able to get your claim backdated. This means you’ll get more money to pay towards your arrears. If you’re already getting benefits. If you get Universal Credit or other benefits, you can ask for part of these payments to be paid towards your rent arrears. Paying arrears using your benefits means you won’t have to worry about making extra payments to your landlord yourself. It also means your landlord will get all the money you owe them - though it can take a long time, as you’ll usually only repay small amounts. Tell the DWP that you want to use your benefits to pay your arrears. You’ll find the number for the DWP at the top of your benefits letter. If you get any benefits paid directly to your landlord, check with your local council or Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to find out how much your landlord has been

Otis’ Final Village Tails
D
ear Friends, I do hope this column finds you well. I am so sorry to have to tell you that dear Otis passed away peacefully in the afternoon of November 23 2020. It has been my absolute pleasure to share his adventures and musings with you over the past few years. We had some fun, didn’t we! I was lucky enough to have Otis by my side for eleven and a half years, and I have the most super memories of our precious time together. He didn’t have a favourite person or place – he loved everyone and everything! He was such a gentleman, and I really could take him everywhere. The polling station, shops, exercise classes, church flower festivals, country and coastal pubs, friends’ houses, parks and sports pitches; Otis wagged his tail at them all – and many more. How he loved to be comfortable! On his summer holidays to Hunstanton one year, we forgot his basket. So my husband slept soundly on one side of the bed, Otis took up residence next to him, and I slept on the sofa! For three nights! Every single person who came to our house was greeted by a thrilled Otis with a toy in his
mouth and a tail with a mind of its own. ‘Is that toy for me?’ they would ask, unsuccessfully attempting to take it from his soft mouth. Being the well-mannered chap he was, Otis would eventually relinquish his toy, and then trot enthusiastically after his visitor as they made their way into our garden to throw it for him. The toy would fly through the air. Otis would not budge. ‘Fetch!’ ‘No!’ ‘Bring it back then!’ ‘Get it yourself!’ ‘But you’re a Labrador Retriever!’ ‘And a hungry one too. Do you have any snacks?’ I am sure everyone reading this has lost loved ones – people and pets – and my heart goes out to you all. We miss them every day, C don’t we? So I will say farewell to you for M now. Otis’ younger humans have busied themselves planning for Y a puppy, and when we are lucky CM enough to welcome one into our lives, I will introduce him to you MY too. ‘Your Neighbour’s Wife’ By Tony Parsons
‘The Cousins’ By Karen M McManus
‘Code Name Bananas’ By David Walliams
Mother, wife and successful business woman Tana Carver seems to have the perfect life. She’s the sort of person you’d want to live next door to, and might become your best friend. But what sort of person is she really? This is a gripping psychological thriller from Tony Parsons.
The Storys are the envy of their neighbours: owners of the largest property on their East Coast island, they are rich, beautiful, and close. Until it all falls apart. The four children are suddenly dropped by their mother with a single sentence: You know what you did. They never hear from her again. 18 years later, the teenagers are determined to discover the truth at the heart of their family. But some secrets are better left alone.
1940. Britain is at war with Nazi Germany. Eleven-year-old Eric spends his days at the place that makes him most happy: London Zoo. And there’s one animal in particular he loves: Gertrude the gorilla. With bombs falling all over London, Eric must rescue Gertrude. Together with his Uncle Sid, a keeper at the zoo, the three go on the run. But while hiding out at the seaside they uncover a top-secret Nazi plot…

Family Life Top 5 Care Essentials for a Happy and Healthy Dog Seeing your dog grow and thrive is one of life’s great rewards, but which are the most important areas when it comes to canine health? Here are five of the essentials:
1. Vaccinations Vaccinating your dog against life-threatening diseases such as distemper, parvo virus and leptospirosis prevents or reduces their potentially devastating effects. Your vet will let you know which vaccinations are required and whether any boosters are needed in the future. 2. Diet Dietary needs change during a dog’s lifetime, so the calciumrich foods you fed your puppy won’t be as suitable when they’re fully grown. By the time they reach old age fewer calories will be needed, and probably additional help to maintain bones and joints. 3. Exercise Exercise benefits body and mind and is one of the most important activities for your dog. Although the level of
Dog Dieting Your dog isn’t starting the month worried about zipping up their jeans. But if a check on their waistline shows that they are carrying a few extra pounds, it’s time for to you to address the problem for the sake of their health. Studies have shown that overweight dogs don’t live as long and are more prone to illnesses that spoil their quality of life. All those little extra treats you’ve been giving them could mean there’s a genuine risk of killing your pet with kindness. There’s no BMI chart for dogs, so you need to look at body shape and assess body fat. Viewed from above, does your dog have a waist where their body tapers after the ribcage? Can you feel your dog’s ribs or
do they have a potbelly? Increasing exercise will not be enough on its own, so you should plan a trip to the vet. Not only will they assess how overweight they are, they’ll check if any medical conditions are causing the extra pounds or will prevent weight loss. Furthermore the vet can provide a special caloriecontrolled food. Keep a note of everything – including table scraps and treats – that your dog eats for a few days. A dog that does not seem to eat much dog food probably still has an appetite for sausages and biscuits! If you’ve reached the stage that your pet actually looks plump, it’s going to take quite a while to reach their target weight, so stick with it.
exercise depends on various factors, such as breed and age, the mental stimulation that exercise provides adds greatly to your dog’s health and happiness. 4. Worming, fleas and ticks Tapeworms and roundworms are common parasitic infestations in dogs. Regular worming is essential, therefore, and should ideally take place every three months. Don’t forget flea and tick treatments too, as prevention is much easier than cure in this respect. 5. Dental It’s advisable to start checking your dog’s teeth in puppyhood so they become used to the practice. You can buy dog toothpaste and toothbrushes to make cleaning easier, but you also need to watch for signs of redness or inflammation of the gums.

Focus on Funerals Choosing Flowers for Your Loved One The type of flowers you choose can express specific sentiments. The traditional language of flowers provides a way to convey your feelings and send a meaningful message. The gift of a plant is often an ideal choice, as they provide a long-lasting tribute to the loved one lost, as well as a constant reminder of the friendship and affection you wish to support the bereaved through the grieving process. Lilies The lily is the flower most commonly associated with funeral services as they symbolize the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. The white lily expresses majesty and purity, where as white stargazer lilies specifically symbolize sympathy. Gladioli Gladioli have a tall flower stem composed of multiple flowers that can measure up to 4 feet tall. They are typically used in fan sprays, which are classic and elegant arrangements for traditional funeral services. The gladiolus embodies strength of character, sincerity, and moral integrity. They are available in a wide range of colours, including white, pink, red, purple, yellow, orange, salmon, and green. Carnations Long lasting and fragrant, carnations are a popular choice for sympathy arrangements. The red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence. Chrysanthemums Mums are frequently included in arrangements for funeral services. In some European countries, such as France, Italy,
Spain, Poland, Hungary and Croatia, chrysanthemums are symbolic of death and are only used for funerals or on graves. In China, Japan and Korea, white chrysanthemums are symbolic of lamentation and grief. In the US, they symbolize truth and usually regarded as positive and cheerful, with New Orleans as a notable exception. Roses As one of the most recognizable flowers, roses can be a beautiful part of an arrangement of funeral flowers. White roses evoke reverence, humility, innocence, and youthfulness. Red roses convey respect, love, and courage. Pink roses signify love, grace, appreciation and gentility. Dark crimson roses denote grief and sorrow. Yellow roses are given by friends of the deceased to symbolize their strong ties. When you include a single rose in a bouquet it expresses enduring love for the deceased. Orchids Orchids say “I will always love you”. When giving an orchid plant as a gesture of sympathy, it is important to give consideration to colour. Pink and white are traditional colours of sympathy. Daffodils and Tulips Bright yellow spring tulips and daffodils are a symbol of renewal and fresh starts. For this reason, they are believed to bring encouragement and hope to a person who is grieving or unhappy, making them a great choice to send as a sympathy gift to the family home of the departed. Tulips represent elegance and grace. Yellow tulips represent cheerfulness. White tulips represent forgiveness. Purple tulips represents royalty. Lastly, red tulips represent perfect love.

The Great Outdoors
Don’t forget your feathered friends straight onto your bird table or placed in special holders. Nowadays the thinking is that it is worth feeding birds throughout the year (but if you do, it is essential to keep on doing it). You may then also wish to consider using some meatier live bird foods in the form of various grubs and larvae, such as mealworms especially bred to be fed as high-protein snacks to the birds.
At this time of year many of us are really regretting the excesses of the last few weeks: overindulging in food and drink, too much sitting around and not getting out and about and taking exercise – and maybe not even going into the garden quite as much as usual! Combine all this with what usually amounts to a two week period of near hibernation and the bathroom scales will be daring you to step on board, with the prospect of a large meal perhaps seeming particularly unappealing. However, spare a thought for the garden birds, as you can be sure that they’ll not have been overindulging and, if temperatures have been low, they’ll have needed a huge amount of energy just to keep warm and stay alive. At this time of year they are often in desperate need of a few square meals and a supply of clean, fresh water. Most food scraps will go down well, but avoid anything which is spicy or salted and make sure that the food you use will not encourage rats or other vermin. Bread, cake
or plain biscuits all make welcome treats. I also put out apples – sometimes those from the trees at home, either when I have too many or if they are starting to go a little wrinkly in store. If you don’t have this option, why not buy a bag of
apples? They needn’t be anything other than the cheapest or wonkiest and they’ll make a great source of fresh food and moisture for many birds. I find that the blackbirds (and even an occasional thrush visitor) love them, but sparrows and the various tits tuck in happily too. Peanuts are very popular and the peanut feeders I have are constantly covered with nuthatches, blue tits, great tits, coal tits and even the occasional longtailed tit or very agile sparrow. A good quality bird feeder is essential unless your garden happens to be a squirrel-free zone. I also have a small Perspex feeder that attaches
18 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
to the dining room window with a sucker, which when filled with bird seed or peanuts provides a safe, squirrel-free feeding area and a wonderful way to watch the birds for us humans inside the house. Something like this would make a brilliant gift for anyone too, especially someone who is confined to their house – far more entertaining than watching TV! General bird seed mixes are great too, and perfect for those birds preferring seeds or finding aerial acrobatics from a peanut feeder impossible. Sprinkle the mix on a bird table, the top of a wall or perhaps a garage or shed roof and you should see it being consumed by a selection of smaller wild birds. If you have a seed feeder then consider getting a special thistle seed mixture, said to be a favourite amongst many of the finches. Fat balls and fat blocks, either plain or containing additional seed, peanuts, fruit etc. also provide an easily accessible form of those much-needed calories, and can either be put
And just one last thing, research has revealed that, much as regular feeding of garden birds is to be encouraged, we should all be reminded that a bit of housekeeping is necessary too: the research reveals that both E.coli and salmonella can be found on bird tables and bird feeders if they are not cleaned regularly, and it is possible that birds could be threatened by these and other pathogens. So do remember to scrub down and rinse out any bird feeding areas from time to time. It is also essential that any bird foods you buy are of good quality, preferably from a well-respected supplier or bearing the logo of the RSPB, BTO or similar respected authority.

Health & Beauty The Importance of Regular Dental Checks Having to visit the dentist every six months may not be the appointment that everyone looks forward to, but it is one of the most important ones to keep. If you have found yourself wondering what the point of having regular dental checkups and cleanings really is, we’ve got something for you to think about. If you are considering skipping a dental checkup because of cost or another factor like time or dental anxiety, make sure to consider all the risks. What you might end up paying in the long run for not visiting your dentist will likely be much higher, both for your wallet and your peace of mind. Here are some of the most important reasons why you should see your dentist regularly: 1. Oral Cancer Detection Oral cancer is an extremely serious disease that manifests itself in various ways. Without knowing the signs of its early onset, oral cancer is often not diagnosed and can quickly progress and become life threatening. But thankfully, an early stage oral cancer diagnosis is often easily treatable. Your dentist is highly trained to recognize these signs and symptoms, and with regular dental checkups every six months the likelihood of catching oral cancer in time is dramatically higher. Recognising oral cancer in its early stages is key in treating it successfully, and while you may not notice oral abnormalities, your dentist will. A VELscope Cancer exam is non-invasive, entirely pain-free, and lasts only a minute or two at most. The exam catches invisible signs of dead tissue caused by tumours forming by shining a special light inside the mouth. Takes very little time, totally painless, and could save your life? It’s a no-brainer! 2. Plaque, Tartar, and Cavities Even with the most diligent daily brushers and flossers, there are still small areas in the mouth that are missed by a regular brushing and flossing. When plaque builds up it becomes more difficult to remove, solidifying and turning into tartar, which is extremely difficult to get rid of without professional help. Regular dental cleanings prevent tartar from eroding teeth or creating holes in them, which is how cavities are created. Cavities rarely give any warning signs as they form, only resulting in a small ache once the tooth is already decayed. Once the damage has been done, you will have to go back to the dentist to have cavities and other tooth problems filled and fixed. This can all be avoided with regular cleanings that take care of plaque and tartar before it becomes destructive. A cleaning appointment is also more affordable than getting a filling, so if money’s tight you should make sure not to miss the cleanings! 3. Gum Disease Plaque and tartar buildup not only cause tooth decay but can also erode the mouth’s gum tissues. This happens when tartar buildup causes an infection where the gum is connected to the tooth, making the gum pull away from the tooth. This
20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
infection is known as gingivitis and as it progresses the tissue that attaches gums to the teeth breaks down. Once it reaches this point it is officially gum disease, and only at this point will there likely be any swelling, bleeding, or soreness in the mouth. Along with the breakdown of gum tissue, gum disease also causes a breakdown of the bone that holds teeth in place. At this point it is common to see teeth loosening or falling out altogether and drastic treatment methods will have to be taken by a dental specialist. Not only do specialists require more appointments and likely a blow to your wallet, but treatment of gum disease, depending on the severity, can include surgery, extremely deep cleaning, and medication. To avoid all of this, regular dental cleanings are essential in catching and addressing gingivitis before it gets out of hand. 4. Keeping Bad Habits in Check There are many bad habits that can have a negative impact on your oral health, some of which you may not even realise are causing issues. Some of these habits include chewing ice, biting your nails, clenching your jaw, grinding your teeth, eating particularly sticky or hard sweets, brushing your teeth too hard, drinking coffee and red wine, and of course smoking. When you go for regular dental checkups, your dentist can check for any oral damage caused by these or other habits which you may otherwise not have noticed. Being informed about specific destructive habits allows you to change or alter your lifestyle choice to prevent further damage. Visiting the dentist allows you to fix the damage that has already been done, and help your oral health be the best it can be. 5. Find Problems Under the Surface With X-Rays A crucial part of visiting your dentist every six months is getting your teeth and jaw bone x-rayed. X-ray images allow dental professionals to see what is happening beneath the surfaces of your mouth, and can find and diagnose issues that may be invisible to the naked eye. Problems like this can include impacted teeth, which are growing teeth that are blocked from pushing through the gum line, as often seen in wisdom teeth.
Damage to the jawbone can also be pinpointed as well as any bone decay, swelling, cysts, or tumours, all of which are impossible to actually see without x-ray imaging. Finding these or any other major oral issues as soon as possible is critical in order to properly treat them. Especially with destructive diseases that show little to no symptoms but progress quickly, up-todate x-rays and bi-annual checkups are the best way to keep on top of your health. 6. Head, Neck, and Lymph Node Checks In addition to checking your mouth, gums, and tongue for signs or oral cancer, your dentist will also check your neck, jaw, and lymph nodes, located just below your jawline, for any swelling, lumps, or other abnormalities. If an abnormality is found it could be a sign of a major health issue, and your dentist will alert you to it and refer you the appropriate medical professional. Swollen lymph nodes are a particular area that do not necessarily hurt or seem out of the ordinary but when identified properly by a professional could be a sign of certain kinds of cancer or other diseases that require immediate attention. Not having regular dental checkups drastically cuts down how often your neck and thyroid glands are checked. So while looking for abnormalities only takes your dentist a minute, it could mean an extremely serious disease is identified early enough to make a huge difference. So, Are Dental Checkups Worth the Effort? Dentists and dental professionals are not only concerned with fixing teeth. They professionally clean your teeth, aim to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy, and check for abnormalities that may otherwise go unnoticed and could be a sign of larger health issues. Dental professionals make sure that your bones are strong, and will help you correct any habits that may be sabotaging your oral health, among other things. Skipping dental appointments may not seem like a big deal, but oral issues can develop and progress extremely quickly whether or not you notice it. By keeping on top of your dental cleanings and checkups you’re doing yourself a big favour in the long run. Here’s wishing you a great year of oral health!

e all know Holbeach as a market town with a wide range of independent shops on the high street but did you know it has a rich history and many famous faces started life in the town! • Until the beginning of the 17th century, the sea came to within 2 miles (3.2 km) of the town and there were severe floods recorded in the 13th and 16th centuries. The land drainage programmes that followed moved the coastline of the Wash to 9 miles (14 km) away, leaving Holbeach surrounded by more than 23,000 acres (93 km2) of reclaimed fertile agricultural land
• The Spalding and Norwich Railway, (later incorporated in the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway), opened Holbeach railway station in 1862. Like the rest of the M&GN route, it closed to passengers in 1959 • The name “Holbeach” also applies to the civil parish of Holbeach. The parish is one of the largest by area in England, and extends from Cambridgeshire to the Wash, measuring 16 miles (26 km) north to south, and about 4 miles (6.4 km) east to west. • The Prime Meridian of the world passes through the west of Holbeach and is marked with a millstone at Wignals Gate

Rekindling passion in adversity Petros Mapanda has headed up the team at The Lawns Dental Practice in the heart of Long Sutton for over 4 years, since he took over the practice in 2016.The year 2020, of course, has been different to others and it has been the additional challenges of continuing to provide dental care to the local community amidst the complications of the coronavirus pandemic that have galvanised his passion for being a dentist. As Petros explains: “The corona virus pandemic has made the whole world realise how much we depend on each other like never before. This close interdependence has been felt even more by our patient care team at The Lawns Dental Practice. Our patients needed us to be available and reachable for advice and remote consultation throughout the several months of lockdown and I am proud to say we were able to meet the challenges very successfully. Face to face consultations were not possible due to severe shortages of PPE yet our patients’ needs were met and reassurance provided wherever possible. Due to the coordinated response from our patient care team and practice support groups like Pandora Dental Association of Private Dentists we were able to source PPE from various suppliers both at home and abroad. We were among the first practices to be able to reopen on 8 June 2020 and we are proud to say we have been able to provide routine dental treatment thanks to the additional safety measures we have taken such as the use of face shields and high filtration masks, air purifiers, high volume air and saliva and water evacuation systems, rubber dam and counter safety barriers at reception. Hand disinfectant stations are available at the point of entry and exit from the practice building as well as at every point of entry or exit from room to room within the practice. Contactless payment systems are in place and encouraged to avoid unnecessary touching of surfaces. Toilets are out of bounds for patients except for emergencies needs only. We have always used disposable gloves, masks and hand towels but we have also added disposable gowns to be worn over our scrubs. Scrubs are laundered daily to prevent cross contamination and staff receive Covid19 risk mitigation assessment such as daily temperature checks and periodic Covid19 antigen and antibody
testing. All patients are expected to receive a Covid19 risk mitigation assessment at every visit to the practice. We encourage our patients to use the online appointment booking system via the Practice website www. thelawnsdental.co.uk and to use the NHS Covid19 symptoms checker app. This app links directly into the NHS test and trace system and our practice is a registered site and user of the NHS Covid19 test and trace app. Petros is eternally grateful to our patients for their loyalty and staff for their dedication to duty of care. The corona virus pandemic is not over by a long shot but Petros and his team believe that this pandemic like others before it is manageable by adopting well tried and tested hygiene methods. When the HIV, SARS 1, swine flu, bird flu, MERS viruses and CJD (mad

cow disease) unleashed themselves on the human populations all over the world people used to worry about drinking and eating food together in restaurants and sharing utensils yet with prudent use of simple yet effective hygiene practices people and businesses were able to resume their lives in relative safety. The corona virus pandemic is just another reminder for us that strict health and safety measures matter to the survival of the human race.”

Home & Property
Move or Improve? The age old question that many home owners face – there’s no right or wrong answer but you need to decide what works best for you and your family. With our guide it may help you discover all you need to think about. When thinking about having any home improvements carried out, arrange for a free no obligation meeting with a builder or architect (f required) to discuss your project and what you wish to achieve from the alterations. Most builders and architects will offer this service for an initial ‘ball park’ figure.
There’s a lot to Think about When Selling Your Home Selling your home can sometimes entail eye-watering costs that considerably reduce any profit you make from the sale, but saving money throughout the process is possible if you’re prepared and understand the various fee systems involved.
It’s always a good idea to obtain details of all alterations in writing in the form of a contract so there can be no mis-understandings. In particular, discuss the timescales that each alteration requires as these could affect your daily routines - e.g. electricity and water disconnections, or having to book time off work. Finally, ensure you allow plenty of time to think carefully about what changes you want to make - your new design needs to meet your exact requirements to fit in with your life.
Some people choose to sell their home themselves rather than using an estate agent, which can save a significant sum, and we’ll look at the pros and cons of this option a little later. But firstly, what fees might you face in your efforts to move up or down the property ladder and how can you save money at each step?
It is thought that an extra bathroom or kitchen makeover add the most value after an extension. If it’s an extra bathroom you are after, may be you can take some room from a larger bedroom or put a sink in the current bedrooms. Have you thought about having a separate the bath from the shower so several people can use it at the same time (if that works for you and your family!). For several thousand pounds you could easily fund an extra shower and loo and it will probably add value to your home too, improving the equity levels and in some cases this may mean getting a better mortgage deal in the future!
Estate agency fees Estate agency fees are typically expressed as a percentage of the final selling price, and this fee is known as commission. Any fees quoted by estate agents may or may not include VAT so it’s important to check, as the extra 20% will make a significant difference to your costs. ‘No sale, no fee’ is a common method used by ‘traditional’ estate agents to charge commission, which means you don’t pay anything until the property
Extra rooms can be added and put in the garden, over a garage, or at the back of your home if you have the space for less than £10,000 so it’s worth considering and chatting through these options with a builder before taking the plunge into marketing your home if it’s extra space driving your decision. 28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
is officially sold. On the other hand, online agencies typically charge their fees upfront or by way of a deferred credit agreement. If you choose an online agency you may have to pay extra for services such as accompanied viewings or your For Sale sign, but this is very much dependent on the agency. High street estate agents might also charge fees for extra services, such as featured or premium listings. Legal fees In a similar way to estate agents, some solicitors and conveyancers base their fees on your home’s value. Others use a fixed fee structure that provides more certainty to both parties. Legal fees do vary considerably so it pays to shop around, and also obtain recommendations from trusted friends or family if possible. The final cost in legal fees when selling your home will depend on the complexity of the transaction. If your property is leasehold, for example, and has a mortgage, the solicitor will need more administration time, as their workload will be greater. It’s not advisable to select a solicitor purely on the basis of price,
however. As this is such an important transaction, you need to factor in the solicitor’s previous experience and the timescale they’ve stated to push the sale through. Removal fees There are many factors that determine a removal firm’s fees, including whether or not you pack your boxes yourself, how many belongings you need to move, the proximity of your moving date and the distance to your new home. It’s highly advisable to obtain several quotes for comparison purposes – perhaps a combination of national and local firms. Also check that you have sufficient insurance to cover your contents in the move, and whether there are any online reviews of the companies you’re considering. Move yourself If you don’t have many belongings to move, you could hire a van and move yourself. You’ll need to factor in the cost of hiring the van, the fuel needed to travel to and from the properties (potentially several times), insurance for ‘goods in transit’ and the packaging materials.

THE BEST NEW SUVS FOR UNDER £30,000 After an SUV but don’t want to break the bank? Why not try these options?
T
he SUV segment is one that seems to be showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to popularity. They’re being snapped up thick and fast thanks to good practicality levels and that all-important high driving position. But they’re often not cheap. However, there is a way to get into a new SUV without stretching the budget too far – so we’ve set a cap of £30,000. Let’s see what’s on offer.
headlights and funky chrome sections. However, it ticks the traditional SUV boxes well; it’s practical, well-made and spacious too. Like the Kodiaq, there’s a seven-seater option as well. Only available with either a petrol or hybrid setup, the CR-V does lack the diesel option that is often preferred in this segment, but it counters with a great driving experience and frugal aroundtown motoring.
and for that you’re getting plenty of standard equipment and an interior that really does feel a class above the rest in terms of styling. It too has seven seats – matching the CR-V and Kodiaq’s offerings – which adds another string to the 5008’s already well-strung bow.
Skoda Kodiaq
The Skoda Kodiaq is one of the go-to choices when it comes to budget SUVs. It’s spacious, practical and it looks good too – but more importantly, it comes loaded with equipment yet won’t break the bank.
Mazda CX-5 An SUV is not often the type of car you go to for a true ‘drivers’ experience; they can be heavy, a little detached and not overly involving. The CX-5, however, is a car that goes against the grain – somehow Mazda has made this big SUV a genuinely good car to drive.
Prices start for a smidge over £25,000 which, given the Kodiaq offers a refined driving experience and seven-seater flexibility, isn’t bad at all in our minds.
It’s smart to look at and smart inside too, while all of the materials feel of a high quality. It’s also well put together and standard equipment levels are good – all for well under our £30,000 budget.
Renault Kadjar Renault’s Kadjar is one of the best cars on this list in terms of budget, thanks to a starting price of just under £22,000. For that, you’re getting a good-looking SUV with smart styling and a well-appointed interior, along with the choice of efficient petrol or diesel engines. It recently had a refresh too, only helping to sharpen the way it looks, and is packed with technology and assistance systems.
Honda CR-V
Nissan Qashqai The Nissan Qashqai is one of the go-to cars in this segment – it’s been one of the most popular SUVs in the UK for some time now, where its excellent value and good practicality levels have won many drivers over. Honda’s CR-V is a space-age looking SUV that stands out from the crowd thanks to plenty of quirky design touches, such as wraparound LED
Peugeot 5008 If you’re after a different-looking SUV then step this way towards the Peugeot 5008, arguably one of the most distinctive cars of its type on the market today. Prices start from just over £28,000,
32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
The most recent Qashqai has been around for some time now – and it’s due to be replaced soon – but it still represents a real bargain considering prices start at £23,450.

he Managing Director of Holbeach Heating, Chris Feeney, started business as Chris Feeney Plumbing & Heating in November 1976 a few months after having completing his City & Guilds. The business then became Holbeach Heating when the Fleet Street shop was opened in 1987. The majority of our work is central heating boiler and system replacements and maintenance. We particularly specialise in Worcester Bosch boilers and have been accredited installers since 1998. As we are Gas Safe Registered, we are able to carry
out work on both natural gas and LPG appliances. This also includes Landlord Gas Safety inspections and servicing. We are also OFTEC registered and work on oil boilers and together with repairs to them. We offer a fuel tank replacement service with bunded (double-skin) tanks. We can carry out general plumbing installations and repairs including water softeners and bathrooms. Most work we do is in Holbeach and its locality, but we can travel to an approximate 30 mile radius. We are proud that the vast majority of our work is repeat business and referrals.
