to the November issue!

I

cannot tell you how great it is to be back in full swing of work and producing the magazine. It was lovely to have so many emails and messages on Facebook from residents who are happy we are back in print, so a huge thank you to all that took the time to get in touch. If anyone has any local stories they would like covering please contact me on 01775 640254 or email editor@simplyboston.co.uk. During lockdown we took the opportunity to consult with the public and advertisers and explored the different ways in which we could distribute the magazine and the overwhelming feedback suggested residents would like to see it more freely available – we have therefore built relationships with local primary schools and businesses to partner with us the distribute the magazine locally. We

now have Simply Boston available at over 50 outlets across the area, along with many primary schools in the area placing the magazine in school book bags. We are therefore no longer delivering through letterboxes, so make sure you hunt out a copy each month! What a change in the weather we have had over the past few weeks. Literally overnight the temperature plummeted 10 degrees and that was it – Autumn is here! I love this time of year as it’s nice to get cosy at home, see the changing colours outside and days out are less busy! However I have approached October this year with a little trepidation as I have celebrated a big birthday…albeit different to how we planned at the beginning of the year! We enjoyed a family weekend in Norfolk, not on the warm beach as we hoped for, but in some ways this took the

pressure off and we were able to enjoy it in a more relaxed way and filled it with family time, which really is the most important thing, isn’t it? Back to this issue. We have returned to our usual magazine format this month jam packed full of inspiration, advice and local good news stories. Laura has some gorgeous winter warmers, we look at how to help wild birds in our new regular feature ‘The Great Outdoors’ as now more than ever we all need appreciate what getting outside locally can offer. Tim test drives the 7 seater Mitsubishi Shogun Sport and finally we look at sixth form options for those moving on in their education come September 2021. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue, stay safe and see you next month!

Beavers and Cubs help keep their community clean Beavers and Cubs from the 2nd Boston Scout Group have helped to keep their community clean after embarking on litter picking sessions over the past few weeks. The two groups took to the neighbouring streets in the Skirbeck area, particularly focusing near the Focus One Centre for the activity, organised by the group with group scout leader, Mike Rowlatt, managing the overall running of the project with safety equipment provided by Boston Borough Council and the local Fly-tipping Watch Group. In doing something for their area and fellow residents, they were praised by the council’s environmental supervisor, Jenny Moore who was pleased to be able to pass on her gratitude to the group. During the litter pick, a number of residents said how good it was to see young people out and about doing something positive.

4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Mr Rowlatt, group leader, said: “The youngsters were very enthusiastic litter pickers and really got stuck into this activity, collecting a surprising amount of litter.” After each session the young people went back to the FocusOne Centre for a discussion on the importance of looking after the environment and the roles everyone has to protect it. The group leader also said that they would love to take part in any environmental projects that the council look to undertake in the future and cannot wait to hear more from Jenny soon. If you have young children or know anyone who may be interested in joining them they meet on Mondays (Beavers) and Fridays (Cubs) between 6.30pm and 8pm, both sessions are held at the FocusOne Centre. Please contact Michael by emailing 2ndboston@bostonscouts. org.uk for further information.

well-known and frequently visited hotel in the centre of town has been become the latest property to become multi-award winning, having recently been announced as Winner of the Good Hotel Award for 2020. The Quayside Hotel and Bar, located on London Road in Boston, was named winner following a record breaking year of guests staying in the property throughout 2019. Owned, operated and managed by Smartmove Hotels, the property boasts attractive views overlooking the River Haven, and features a modern bar and lounge accompanied by a taste tingling eatery. A statement issued by The Good Hotel Awards said: “Quayside Hotel & Bar has been awarded the highly coveted Good Hotel

Award for 2020. Over the last twelve months, we have evaluated customer feedback and these premises have demonstrated exceptional levels of room quality, service and value when compared to our industry benchmarks in their category. In recognition of this achievement, they have been duly awarded the Good Hotel Award for 2020.” The Quayside Hotel building has long been associated with the fishing heritage of Boston port. As well as being linked to the fishermen, the port is one of the oldest in the world. The bar was first opened in 1812 and today is a grade 2 listed building. Today we’re better known for our great location, immaculate rooms and a wide range of drinks that would satisfy any strapping fisherman.

Lincolnshire Councils join together for warmer homes

L

incs 4 Warmer Homes (L4WH) is a new partnership between local authorities across Greater Lincolnshire, offering energy efficiency improvements and advice. L4WH will replace the former South Humber Energy Efficiency Partnership by North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) and North Lincolnshire Council (NLC), with the addition of Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) and the seven district councils. The new partnership secures funding available to eligible residents and works alongside contractors to deliver energy efficiency improvements to assist those living in fuel poverty, in saving money and reducing energy usage. In the first of a number of funding streams available to residents, households can get their heating facilities changed through National Grid’s £150m Warm Homes Fund, a programme administered by Community Interest Company, Affordable Warmth Solutions and only available through local authorities and registered social landlords.

Residents in receipt of certain income related benefits and that rely on storage heaters, fixed and/ or portable room heaters and solid fuel fires could upgrade to A-rated gas central heating or, where mains gas is not an option, LPG will be offered – subject to survey to determine eligibility and acceptance by the installer. Funding is limited and will be released on a first come first served basis. In some instances, a connection to the mains gas network will be required to help residents access gas for the first time, with additional funding available to cover connection costs. L4WH is administered by North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration partner, ENGIE, for all ten local authorities. North Lincolnshire Council is responsible for delivering the Warm Homes Fund. If you believe you could benefit from a central heating system and may meet the eligibility criteria contact the L4WH Team. To contact Lincs 4 Warmer Homes visit www.l4wh.co.uk, call (01472) 326434 or email l4wh@nelincs.gov.uk.

W

ith Bonfire night fast approaching Jerry Green Dog Rescue have some tips and advice to share with you on how you can try and keep your dog calm and settled during the celebrations. Shelley Wilks, Deputy chief Executive for the rescue says: “We know that many dogs are not bothered by the fireworks and during the numerous displays throughout the year those days will go by like any other. Whereas for some dogs, it is quite a different story. Many are terrified by the loud bangs and flashing lights, and it can be a traumatic experience. “It may be a time of year you dread with your furry companion, but there are things you can do in preparation and during the night to make it easier on you both to cope with. “We’re also aware that throughout lockdown, many people have welcomed new furry friends into their home who may have never heard fireworks before, so now is the time to prepare them for this new experience.” Jerry Green’s tips on what you can do in advance: Starting now, you can begin acclimatising your dog to firework sounds. There are CDs and downloads available of generic firework/bonfire noise that you can use. You can also check this video out on YouTube: Firework sounds. Training should begin as far in advance as possible and is an ongoing process. Don’t expect success overnight: just like humans, working with phobias takes time! 1) First, take your dog to the vet. Noise sensitivity is often seen in pets who are in pain or have undiagnosed medical issues, such

as gastrointestinal problems. If your pet is in discomfort, training will at best take much longer, or at worst be completely ineffective. 2) Decide on a time during the day when it is most convenient to train, and plan that in to your schedule. This will make it more likely that you are able to stick to the plan, even in the face of busy, everyday life. You’re best doing several short sessions a day, then one long session. 3) Systematic desensitisation has been shown to be most effective at helping with noise phobias. This involves playing firework noises and GRADUALLY increasing volumes at a pace that your dog can cope with. Remain calm whilst you do this training, and continue with your day as normal, but ensuring to keep a close eye on your dog. • Play the sounds at such a low volume that your dog notices the sound, but does not respond fearfully to it. Their ears might prick, and they may look up, but they should quickly be able to go back to what they are doing. Look out for signs of anxiety like licking lips, yawning, scratching, whining and pacing, and immediately reduce the volume further. • Over the course of many days, increase the volume very gradually, noting how your dog responds each time and adjusting the volume as needed. Don’t increase the volume until your dog is able to ignore it at its current level. • Never throw your dog into the deep end by cranking up the volume and expect them to get used to it- it won’t work and your dog will suffer as a consequence. Slow, gradual exposure is key. If you seek further advice and support, please contact your vet, our Enterprise Trainer or a qualified dog behaviourist.

The funding from the Ministry of Homes, Communities and Local Government was awarded from the Town Deal Accelerated Funding scheme, following Boston Borough Council’s submission of the pitch as a key project in July. The 3G pitch facility, proposed to be based at Haven High Academy’s site in Marian Road, has the backing of the Football Association and would include all required fencing and floodlighting. What are the Options at 16? As Year 11 approaches, your son or daughter will need to start thinking about their options when they leave school at 16. As you help them through this process, you should discover a range of choices relating to education, training or work. You could start your search at GOV.UK (www.gov.uk/browse/ education/find-course) where you’ll find out more about qualifications, apprenticeships and post-16 financial support. This article focuses on options available in England. Post-16 options and the law The raising of the participation age in England a few years ago means that, whatever your child’s next step, some form of study or training is compulsory until at least the age of 18. They won’t have to stay in fulltime education, but they will need to opt for some part-time learning if they choose to work or volunteer. Whether your young person is aiming towards a specific career, aspires to a leading university, wants to go straight into work or keep an open mind, there should be something to suit. From nursing cadetships and apprenticeships in space engineering to university technical colleges and studio schools, there are many exciting opportunities to explore. The first step is to discover which options could suit them and their future plans. Start by helping them to consider how they prefer to learn. Are they happiest learning in

a classroom, do they prefer to apply their learning to real-life problems or do they learn best through doing? If your son or daughter is happy to spend some or most of their time in a classroom, take a look at school sixth forms, sixth form colleges or further education colleges and training providers.

options in the 14 to 19 education landscape. They offer academic qualifications and practical activities combined with contributions from businesses and the feel of a workplace. Studio schools use enterprise projects to support learning, while UTCs offer technical education sponsored by a university.

Sixth forms and colleges As a rough guide, sixth forms tend to focus on academic qualifications for under 19s, with further education colleges offering vocational options to students aged 14 or 16 and over. So a sixth form might offer qualifications in physics and psychology, while a further education college might offer engineering and health and social care. You will find some crossover between what’s on offer and it’s always worth a visit to get a feel for the place. Post-16 students won’t necessarily be in lessons every day, leaving time for independent study and the opportunity to develop a range of skills through other activities.

Apprenticeships and traineeships Young people who prefer to learn through doing a job might favour an apprenticeship, finding work, setting up their own business or volunteering. The most common option to learn through work is an apprenticeship, where formal learning is combined with work. Apprentices earn a minimum of £4.15 per hour (April 2020), with some earning substantially more. It is a popular option and entry can be competitive, although the opportunities are growing in number and in the range of job areas available. To cope with an apprenticeship, your young person will need to be mature enough to work nine to five and follow the rules of the workplace. They’ll also need to have a career direction in mind, at least for the next year or two. If they need more experience,

New educational options University technical colleges (UTCs) and studio schools are newer

confidence or additional skills to find an apprenticeship or a job, then a traineeship might help them to prepare. Finding the right fit The main consideration when making post-16 choices is about finding the right fit for your child so they end up somewhere they will thrive. You can help them to work out what they would enjoy, what would suit them, and how their choices fit in with any future plans. Talk to the staff at your child’s school about how they can support with this process.

Funerals During Covid-19

C

urrently, guidelines say that funerals should continue as normally as possible and shouldn’t be delayed. You can invite a modest number of family and friends. However, individual crematoriums and cemeteries may have their own guidance based on their facilities and a risk assessment and considered when arranging a funeral. The crematorium may provide online broadcasting so mourners can watch the service without attending in person. If the funeral is being held at a place of worship, attendees should be restricted to 30 people. Though it may need to be fewer than 30 people to allow for social distancing and in line with guidance issued for places of worship. You must consider the wider guidelines in place at the moment, including staying alert and safe social distancing guidance, practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding physical contact and being particularly mindful of those in at-risk groups (such as those over 70, who are self-isolating or who are shielding). The latest funeral guidance aims to balance the needs of the bereaved to mourn appropriately while limiting the spread of coronavirus. It outlines where exceptions can be made to the current guidance to stay at home. These exceptions only relate to the death of someone you live with, a family member or a close friend. And if you are selfisolating or shielding and want to attend, special considerations should be made. What do I need to think about when arranging a funeral? When arranging a funeral at the moment, it’s worth considering the following before you contact a funeral director:who you want to attend, being mindful of those in high-risk groups who may want to attend arranging service sheets as service books are unlikely to be available – though no singing will be allowed recording the eulogy on a phone or other recording device so those not in attendance can listen or watch at another time services may need to be shorter so the venue can be cleaned between services whether you might organise a celebration of life or memorial for a later date, when it’s safe to do so social distancing requirements whether it’s appropriate to have family members bearing the coffin giving particular consideration if anyone attending has been self-isolating as they live with someone displaying symptoms, or anyone advised to shield those considered vulnerable or advised to shield are advised to avoid any contact with the body of the person that’s died, including washing, preparing and dressing. Can I still go to a funeral? There’s specific guidance about who can attend funerals at the moment. The guidance outlines that a modest number of family and friends may attend, with social distancing measures, and hand

14 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

and respiratory hygiene requirements maintained at all times. However, there are certain things to consider: You shouldn’t attend a funeral if: • you’re displaying any symptoms of coronavirus, even very mild symptoms. Those arranging the funeral should do their best to enable you to attend if: • you’re a family member or friend who has been advised to shield but, having carefully considered the risks of attending, would like to do so you’re a family member or friend self-isolating for 14-days because someone you live with or in your support bubble is displaying symptoms, or because you have been contacted by NHS ‘test and trace’ • you have returned to the UK, need to quarantine for 14 days but, as permitted on compassionate grounds by government guidance, can leave your place of quarantine to attend a funeral • If you are normally self-isolating and someone who is shielding or clinically vulnerable is to attend the funeral, you are advised not to attend at the same time as them. When attending, you should advise others that you would normally be selfisolating. Everyone attending must wear a face covering in any places of worship, the crematorium and burial group chapel – unless they have a good reason not to. Travelling to the venue If you’ve been advised to shield or been self-isolating because you live with someone or someone in your support bubble is displaying symptoms, then you should consider your travel to and from the venue (ideally in a car by yourself). If using shared transport with mourners you don’t live with or share a bubble with, and where

social distancing between passengers via the seating positions is not possible, you should all consider wearing a face covering. What changes on the day? As well as the considerations above, there are certain things you should do on the day to avoid the spread of coronavirus. • Wait outside in the car until you’re asked to enter the building by the celebrant, chapel attendant or funeral director. • Don’t shake hands with anyone, including the minister, funeral director or other mourners. • Bring hand sanitiser and use hygiene products made available at the venue. • Allow staff to open and close doors to the service to restrict the number of people touching door handles. Numbers in the venue are likely to be limited. Stick to any assigned seating plans and keep your distance from other mourners. You may be advised not to touch the coffin as you leave the service. Celebrations and Memorial Services Pre-funeral and post-funeral ceremonies may be held in line with the guidance on Staying alert and safe (social distancing). However, families may consider deferring a celebration or memorial service, until further social restrictions are lifted and at a time when attendance can take place safely. If You Can’t Attend If you can’t be at the funeral there are things you can do to help you feel like you’re a part of it. You could light a candle, or sit in quiet reflection, or do a reading. These can help you feel like you are saying goodbye.

Winter Care For Ears

The weather associated with winter is harsh. Winter weather is often cold and wet, which can create some issues for your health. In fact, winter weather can even be harmful to your ears and affect your ability to hear. While it is virtually impossible to hermit yourself off from the world all winter long, with the proper knowledge and foresight, you can still enjoy the winter weather and keep your ears healthy at the same time. To help keep both you and your ears healthy this season, check out these helpful winter ear care tips. Cover Your Ears Wearing scarves, earmuffs, and hats are not just a fashion statement during the winter, they actually have a function. You need these items to help protect your sensitive ears from the cold and wet winter weather. So when you spend time outdoors this winter, be sure to protect your ears to help keep them warm and dry to reduce your risk of exostosis. Exostosis happens when the ear is repeatedly exposed to the cold. The cold stimulates abnormal bone growth that can narrow your ear canal and can block the eardrum, affecting your hearing and increasing your risk of infection. What is Exostosis Exostosis is where bone grows abnormally in the ear due to repeated exposure to cold water. It affects people who swim or surf a lot in cold water – that’s why it’s sometimes called surfer’s ear.

Use Ear Protection when operating Machinery Don’t just cover up your ears this winter to help protect them from the cold, remember that operating machinery can wreak havoc on your hearing. If you work in an environment with loud machinery or even using power tools at home it is recommended to make sure you save your ears as well by wearing earplugs, noise-reducing headphones, or earmuffs. Watch Out for Ice With winter come wet weather and colder temperatures, which is a breeding ground for ice. While these conditions are dangerous for everyone people with impaired hearing are three times more likely to suffer from a dangerous fall than those without hearing loss. While falling on ice is dangerous for everyone, especially since hearing loss can occur from sustaining an injury, if you have

impaired hearing make sure you are extra cautious when you are outside during the winter. Stay alert and watch out for slippery steps, hidden ice patches, and snow-covered objects. Be Healthy and Stay Healthy Bundling up so we can stay warm when we are outside is a necessity during the winter months, we know this. However, you need to do more than just try to stay warm and dry to keep your ears healthy. You should also maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. While this can be difficult to do during the winter months, staying eating healthy and staying active can go a long way in the fight against infections. At the same token, if you come down with the cold or flu, make sure you treat it immediately. If you develop an ear infection, or you can’t seem to fight off your cold, make an appointment with your doctor.

Help Birds in Bad Weather Wintertime, birds are hungry, and the snow’s piling high. We all know by now that birds can survive without our help in the winter. Some ornithologists have even suggested that bird feeding is more beneficial to us than it is to the birds. Be that as it may, studies have shown that birds with access to bird feeders in winter survive at a higher rate than birds without access to feeders. Feeding birds in winter, if done right, is a good thing for the birds (and for us, too). Make sure seed is accessible and dry. Hopper or tube feeders are good at protecting seed from wet weather, and they dole out food as it is eaten. Sweep snow off of platform feeders, or clear a place on the ground where you can scatter seed for groundfeeding species.

bushes, or even along the edge of a wooded area.

Keep extra feeders for use in bad weather. Keep an extra-large-capacity tube feeder in the garage for use when nasty weather comes. It not only gives the birds another place to eat, which means more birds can eat at one time, but it also cuts down on trips outside for refilling the feeders. Other extras to consider having: peanut feeder, suet feeder, satellite feeder (for the small birds to use), and a hopper feeder.

Put out high-energy foods. Such as suet, meat scraps, and peanut butter. Fat gives the biggest energy boost to winter birds, and without enough energy to keep them going, many songbirds would not survive a cold winter night. Suet (the fat removed from processed beef), meat scraps, and peanut butter all provide fat to birds that eat them. Suspend a suet feeder from a tree branch or iron feeder hook. To feed peanut butter, drill one-inch holes in a foot-long section of a small log. Insert a screw eye into one end of the log. Smear peanut butter into the holes and suspend the feeder from the screw eye. Peanut butter will not stick to the roof of a bird’s bill and choke it to death like some people may think.

Scatter seed in sheltered places. Not all birds will venture to your feeder. Some species prefer to skulk in the thickets, brambles, and other secure places. For these species, consider scattering some seed (blackoil sunflower, sunflower bits, peanut bits, mixed seed) in your hedges and

Use a birdbath heater wisely. A water heater can keep your birdbath open in the coldest of weather, which is good and bad. It’s good because birds need water to drink when it’s cold. If there’s snow, birds can use the snow for water. But if there’s no snow they may have no

18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

access to water. There is some anecdotal evidence that birds will bathe in open water in very cold weather (below 0o F), and the water may freeze on their feathers before it dries up. This can be very bad—even fatal—for birds. I suggest you place several large rocks in your bath so there is not enough room for a bird to bathe, but still plenty of places for a thirsty bird to get a drink. When the weather warms up you can remove the rocks and let your birds get on with their hygiene. Offer mealworms in a heavy dish. Where else are they going to get live food when the ground is frozen? Use a heavy dish so the wind can’t blow the worms and dish away. The worms can’t climb its slick sides. Furnish your bird houses. Imagine you’re a bird roosting in a nest box on a cold winter’s night. Wouldn’t it be nice to snuggle down into some dried grass or dry wood shavings in the bottom of the house? Layer three to four inches of clean dry meadow grass in the bottom of bird boxes after the last nesting of the summer. Don’t use sawdust,

however; it can retain moisture once wet, which does not help the birds keep warm. Plug the air vent holes in your bird houses Good ventilation is necessary on a scorching summer day, but it’s a real liability for birds seeking winter shelter. Think how cosy the birds will be in a well-sealed house. Be ready for big changes in weather. If you keep abreast of the weather developments you’ll know when bad weather is coming, and you’ll be able to stock up on seed, suet, and other goodies. You can also be ready to take on some of the activities listed above. Conversely, when the weather improves in Spring, take advantage by cleaning and disinfecting your feeders (one part bleach to nine parts hot water). Whatever you do, don’t let yourself be caught totally unprepared for harsh winter weather. The birds don’t have to live off of your feeder largess, but it sure helps make the winter living a little easier for them and enjoyable for us to see them in our gardens.

Home & Property

Keep Your Home Safe & Secure In Winter It is never too late to take precautions to raise the safety level in and around your home. During winter, insurance claims peak every year. Generally, winter is regarded as the season where many more things can go wrong with maintenance of a property. Home burglary rates climb in winter, home accidents increase and home systems are pressured beyond capacity. Insurance companies have accumulated years of data about what goes wrong during the winter. Everybody involved would like to see these claims reduced, so it is certainly worth analysing their insight in particular. Of course, the first recommendation is to understand the risks that winter presents and have proper insurance to meet the risks. That said, let’s examine their experiences; Home Burglaries Home burglaries are proved to spike upwards during the winter months. Under cover of added darkness, burglars use the opportunity to break in before homeowners return from work or when residents are on vacation to warmer climates. Martyn Foulds of Halifax Home Insurance reports, “Most burglars are looking for an easy target and the cover of darkness makes life simpler for them”… “It is not only the financial loss that

22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

we want to protect people from, but also the distress caused by knowing a stranger invaded the home.” Indeed, the stress and emotional trauma of a home burglary can be traumatic. Insurance companies suggest the following security tips: Locks Doors and Windows It is amazing how many homeowners are careless with this basic security measure. Always lock doors and all windows, including above ground windows. Many homeowners take extra security measure with windows and sliding glass doors, including adding security bars to discourage entry. Use a Safe For your valuables, a safe is a terrific idea. Keeping jewellery that is rarely worn but which has value in a safe deposit box is another security measure. Insurance companies often offer discounts to homeowners with safes to store valuables. Time-switch Lights If you travel or get home late, why not purchase a few timer switches to turn lights on when dark sets? At the

same time, insurance companies think it sound policy to draw curtains and drapes. This will prevent prospective burglars from studying the interior of the home. Refrain from Hiding Keys If we assume burglars are watching the house, we realise we should not hide keys to the home outside the door. It is better to leave a spare key with a neighbour and to make sure all residents have their own key and never lend it out. Insurance companies warn about allowing contractors to have keys to enter the residence when work is needed. Add a Security Alarm System Today’s security alarms address all the features that burglars hate; light, noise and video devices. Adding flood lights activated by motion around the home’s perimeter increases the effect. Alarms draw attention to the burglary in progress and recording camera make identification a real rick for the perpetrator. Today, you can have recording cameras programmed to transmit images to your mobile phone, laptop, or tablet. Additionally, the alarm system can sent a notice to

the local authorities who will respond quickly. An added benefit of today’s security systems is that they can recognise and alert residents of fires or even high carbon levels or gas in the air. Insurance companies make allowances for homes with modern security systems. Light Entryways Make sure all doors, are well lit. Use flood lights to discourage burglars. Keep Your Garden Organised – Keep shrubs trimmed so burglars cannot hide in the shadows and make sure all furniture and equipment is put always and secured for the winter. If you have a combination to your doors or garage, change the entry password regularly. Preparing The Home For Winter – Maintenance Before winter begins and at least once during the winter period, it is a good idea to check your roof tiles. Ice can damage the tiles and cause expensive and extensive damage through rook leaks. Check the seams and insulation in your piping system. Be sure to turn and drain outdoor water spigots and the sprinkler system if you have one. Importantly, have your boiler checked at least once a year and definitely before winter especially. The simple tack of changing the filter can increase your home’s heating efficiency and reduce any chance of a boiler failure. Remember to secure the garage and lock the door from the garage to the house. Burglars are looking for easy access through the garage that includes through garage windows. For some reason, many homeowners do not feel this is an area of the home and are careless about the security. Every season, run a security and safety check of your home. Take the time to inspect the condition and security protocol. Making a few minor improvements can save a lot of heartache down the road.

advice FOR winter driving As temperatures start to get lower and the nights draw in, it means one thing is certain: winter is only around the corner.

U

nfortunately, as with much of the UK, there are car accidents on Lincolnshire’s roads every time there’s a cold snap – so anything you can do to help avoid any heartbreak has to be a good thing. The most important message is to err on the side of caution and not get behind the wheel if it’s snowing or a flurry is forecast. Here’s your checklist to ensure your car is in tip-top condition before the bad weather hits. 1. Get your car serviced If your car is due a service, get it done before the winter. Take advantage of the free or discounted ‘winter car checks’ offered by some garages. 2. Check the battery The battery should be the first priority. During the winter months it suffers from a double whammy of cold temperatures - reducing the output - and the increased use of lights, heater and blower, which place it under additional strain. If your car won’t start because of a flat battery, you can try giving it a jump start. 3. Top up engine coolant with antifreeze Engine coolant should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. You will need to top it up with antifreeze as it becomes diluted over time. 4. Check the condition of your tyres As a car’s tyres are key to both steering and braking, it is essential they are in good condition. 5. Clean your lights Check that all lights, indicators and rear reflectors are clean. Make sure there are no cracked lenses or blown bulbs, and don’t forget to check full beam headlights, fog lights and indicators.” 6. Wash your windscreen and wipers Give your windscreen a thorough clean inside and out and top up your screen washer fluid with antifreeze.

26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

7. Prepare for longer journeys Before setting off on a longer journey, check the weather forecast, travel news and safest routes. 8. Carry a winter car breakdown kit This should include a shovel, torch, blanket, hivisibility vest, screenwash, food and drink supplies, scraper and de-icer, and snow grips for your shoes in case you need to walk to safety. And don’t forget a fully charged mobile phone. 9. Other important areas Also, keep at least a quarter of a tank of fuel in case of unexpected delay and check the oil. If you have a bit of motor know-how, check your brake pads, brake discs and brake fluid to ensure the brakes are fast and responsive. Ensure the fan belt and alternator drive belts are tight and not worn and that plugs and other leads are in good condition and secure. If you don’t feel confident making these checks, any garage should be able to help. Winter car essentials Here’s a checklist of the items you should always keep in your car over winter: 1. Ice scraper and de-icer You never know when you’ll wake up to an iced over windscreen or come back to a frozen car after a day out. Make sure you always carry an ice-scraper and de-icer so you can effectively defrost your windscreen. If you don’t remove snow and ice properly, you could get 3 points on your licence and a £100 fine. 2. Torch and spare batteries Short days and long nights in winter mean you could be getting in and out of your car in the dark. Keep a torch handy to avoid any trips. If you break down, you’ll need to find a safe place to wait for roadside assistance. A torch will help light your way on a dark verge.

3. A fully charged mobile phone If you’re delayed because of bad weather (or a weather related incident), it’s a good idea to let your loved ones know. It’ll save them worrying and stop any distracting texts and phone calls coming in while you’re behind the wheel. Just remember not to use a handheld phone while driving. Pull into a safe rest stop to make a call or ask a passenger to do it for you. 4. An in-car phone charger or power pack This’ll help with number 3 on the list, because you don’t want a dead phone battery in an emergency. 5. Sat-nav or a printed route for an unfamiliar journey The last thing you want is to get lost in the dark on unfamiliar roads. Fiddling with a sat nav could distract you from driving, so planning ahead is the best option. 6. A road atlas Just in case there are diversions and you don’t have any GPS signal, a road atlas will help you plan a new route. 7. Sunglasses It might seem strange to put sunglasses on a winter checklist. But actually, the low sun in winter can dazzle drivers and cause glare. Keep your sunnies in the car to make sure your vision isn’t affected. 8. First aid kit It’s always a good idea to keep a first aid kit in your car. The British Standards Institution has guidelines on what to include like sterile wipes, plasters, dressings and scissors to treat minor wounds. A good kit should have all these. 9. Empty fuel can You’d be surprised how many breakdowns are caused by running out of fuel. If you keep an empty fuel can in the car, you’ll be able to nip to a filling station for a top up if you do run out.

Mitsubishi Shogun Sport The Shogun Sport combines comfort and luxury on the road with excellent performance off the beaten track. It also has a bold, imposing kerbside presence and a spacious seven-seat cabin. The Shogun Sport combines comfort and luxury on the road with excellent performance off the beaten track. It also has a bold, imposing kerbside presence and a spacious seven-seat cabin. The 4x4 is powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel lump that’ll haul the Shogun from zero to 62mph in 11 seconds. The 181PS engine also ensures the SUV is capable of getting to 112mph. But, let’s face it, you won’t be doing that speed in the UK, and you won’t be buying the Shogun Sport for its rubberburning potential. The chances are you’ll use the SUV to transport your sizable family around in comfort - and you’ll be grateful for its traction if the need for going off-road arises. Its eight-speed automatic gearbox makes light work of

things, especially in town or when joining traffic on a motorway. In four-wheel-drive mode, the transmission is just as agreeable. Indeed, the Mitsubishi delivers a splendid driving experience regardless of the terrain it’s on. The SUV’s ride and handling make even the most mundane drive a pleasure. There’s a reason for this - the Shogun Sport’s suspension ensures accurate chassis control and cuts body roll in corners. There’s also a quick steering rack that enhances responsiveness. In addition to the Mitsubishi’s sharp dynamics, there’s a high level of refinement on offer. Large amounts of sound-absorbing materials have been used to ensure road noise is kept out of the cabin. As well as that, leather upholstery, multi-layered

cushioning and electrically adjustable seats make the interior genuinely plush. On the practical front, the Shogun’s second row of seats can be tilted back for comfort and toppled forward to boost space and increase practicality. What’s more, two extra chairs can be raised from the boot floor for smaller passengers or tucked away when they’re not needed. The Sport offers 502 litres of cargo capacity space in five-seat configuration, which rises to 1,488 litres with the main rear seats folded. The Japanese SUV also benefits from the latest safety technology. Occupants are protected by a reinforced body that consists of an energy-absorbing chassis frame. Advanced safety technologies complement this, on top of seven airbags that are fitted as standard. So, if you’re after a vehicle with seven seats that’ll get you places safely and in comfort, then the Shogun Sport is worthy of consideration. It’s especially worth it if you live in the countryside that’s when the 4x4 talents of the Mitsubishi might well pay off.
