Cultus Lake Park Board is now considering a range of solutions, said board chair Sacha Peter. “The board is being forced to look at this now because the Canada goose population has increased dramatically at Cultus for whatever reason,” he said. It could have environmental consequences for the Cultus Lake area, a recreational jewel that attracts more than two million people a year from across the Lower Mainland.

Park board staff have started t t d researching everything from equipment with raking action or a vacuum, to a structure that imitates reeds to discourage roosting. The vexing topic has recently attracted several letters to the editor from Progress readers put off by the soiled public beaches.

“Our bi big concern is that it may “O gravitate from an annoyance into a health issue,” said Peter. “Dealing with poop always means bacteria, which can get into the water.” Some beaches in the Okanagan have even been forced to close because of it. “With so much flat ground they love to hang around the beaches at

Cultus and it means dealing with a large amount of fecal matter,” said the park board chair. One of the troublesome aspects is visitors or residents who actually feed the wild geese, making them human-habituated. “That’s part of why they stick around,” said Peter. But any solution has to be weighed with a cost-benefit analysis, he underlined. When Harrison Hot Springs Mayor Ken Becotte took the call from The Progress reporter, he had just been talking with a fellow council member about the goose feces situation at Harrison Lake beach. The mass of mosquitoes feeding on us to date in the Fraser Valley are not the kind that carry the West Nile virus. But the two kinds that may carry the virus have been found in recent sampling, and the B.C. Centre For Disease Control is advising Fraser Valley residents to start taking precautions against mosquito bites. “None of the mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus,” Dr. Bonnie Henry told The Progress in a telephone interview Thursday. “But because we are starting to see an increase in the type that may carry the virus ... we’re warning people to think about mosquito bites and to take precautions.” Those precautions include using insect repellent, especially in the mornings and evenings when mosquitoes are most active, draining all sources of standing water around homes, and wearing light-colored, long-sleeved clothing when out of doors.

Ministry to return Hope couple’s children Robert Freeman The Progress Paul and Zabeth Baynes say their four children, three of whom were apprehended by the B.C. Children’s ministry nearly four years ago,are being returned next month. The three children, apprehended by the ministry in September, 2007, are being returned Aug. 25, and a baby apprehended at birth in February, 2011 is being returned Aug. 2. “We’re ecstatic,” Zabeth Baynes told The Progress in a telephone interview Monday. Baynes and her husband Paul were living in Hope

when their three children were apprehended by the ministry because authorities believed the youngest child had injuries that suggested “shaken-baby” syndrome. But in March this year, a provincial court judge ruled that shaking was not the cause of the little girl’s brain injuries. The Baynes maintained the child was injured after an older brother, a toddler at the time, tripped and fell on top of her. When the child was later taken to hospital after a change in feeding habits was noticed, doctors suspected a “shaken-baby” case and reported it to the ministry.

In March this year, Judge Thomas Crabtree found that the little girl’s “unexplained injuries” justified the minis-

have extended overnight visits with the couple, “to assist in a smooth transition for them,” Zabeth said. The ministry refused to comment on the Baynes case, for privacy reasons. But a ministry spokesman said in an email that removal of a child from their parents is “always a last resort.” “If supports cannot be put in place to make the home safe for the child, we would remove the child with a goal of returning the child to their home as soon as it is safe to do so,” the spokesman said.

An eyewitness picked up the two men after they fled the scene, and returned them to police. “This incident consumed significant resources,” RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said in a news release, including police dog services, emergency health services, the local fire department, CPR officials and general duty police officers. Hollingsworth said the “foolish stunt ... disturbed the trains from transporting goods, which is extremely costly to the CPR for having to shut down and repair the tracks.” An investigation by the Agassiz RCMP continues, and further charges may be laid.

New CCS director ‘an excellent fit’ for Chilliwack

A 21-year-old Chilliwack man did not drive a truck headlong into an oncoming CPR train as first reported to RCMP officials, but was rather driving away from the train on the railroad tracks at the time of the crash. The unidentified Chilliwack man, and his 23-year-old passenger from Agassiz, were not injured as they jumped from the truck seconds before the train caught up with them near the Wells Road train crossing in Agassiz early Sunday morning. Police said alcohol was a factor in the 2:30 a.m. collision. The Chilliwack man, a new driver, was issued a ticket for failing to remain at the scene of an accident, failure to obey a traffic control device, and driving contrary to restrictions.

McAulay said Challman started his career in a “frontline” position at the Skills Society in Edmonton, Alberta, working with adults with disabilities. After several years on the frontline, Challman then moved into a program manager position, and then moved again into an executive director role with the Blue Heron Support Services, providing support to individuals with a variety of disabilities.

Finding football and freedom in Canada Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Football is organized chaos. Every play during a game is meticulously mapped out by the coaches. Twelve players on offence and 12 on defence are trained to function as one, carrying out assigned tasks with a singular goal. Offence. Move the ball. Defence. Stop the ball. When all goes as planned, the game has a certain poetic grace to it. From a distance you can imagine it as a chess game on grass, pieces moving with elegant fluidity. But always, lurking just below the surface is the chaos. On every play there are collisions, with clashing players creating G forces that would rival an automobile accident. With bodies flying from sideline to sideline at high velocity, keeping your head on a swivel isn’t just a suggestion. It’s a necessity, lest you lose it. Football is chaos. Buomkouth Samuel is OK with chaos. You want real chaos? Try Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991, home to a civil war that left anywhere from 230,000 to 1.4 million (depending on who you believe) dead. Ethiopians killing Ethiopians and Rome’s bread basket left a barren, desolate and famine-ravaged wasteland. This is what Buomkouth was born into. This is what his parents wisely fled from when they moved their family to Kenya, following thousands of their countrymen to the Hagadera refugee camp. You want real chaos? Try being there. Try living in a place

where you have to worry about hyenas dragging off the livestock, and maybe the children. “Sometimes, the goats would make a hole that nobody noticed, and the hyenas would come through,” Buomkouth said. “They would come around 12 o’clock, and parents made sure every kid went to sleep before that.” The Kenyan government of the day allowed Ethiopians to live within its borders, but otherwise didn’t do much to help. Families received food (grains, oil, beans and vegetables) that was meant to last six months. With careful rationing, it could last three. The family could have breakfast and dinner, but lunch was a foreign concept and hunger was constant. “We all shared breakfast and then it was

eight hours till we got home,” Buomkouth said. “But in the camp we had a lot of family, kind of tribes, and we shared a lot. That’s the only reason why a lot of people were able to last six months until the next food. If you didn’t have anybody, you were going to suffer.” Buomkouth and his family were fortunate in that, from time to time, they could escape from Hagadera. Financial aid from family friends and hard work by his parents allowed them to rent a house or apartment in Nairobi so the children could go to school. “I’ve never asked them how they did it, but my parents somehow were able to manage saving money and stuff like that,” Buomkouth said. “I knew the way to make them proud was to go to school and learn something, because they wanted our lives to

be different.” Education was a blessing, but it carried a cost beyond the monetary. “We’d all wake up at 7 a.m. and walk to school, and if you don’t make it on time, you’d get beat,” he recalled. “Girls had to go on their knees with their hands out. Guys have to lay flat and get whooped on the bum. If you were late even one minute, you were getting beat.” Many days, kids had valid reasons for being late. Every time they stepped away from the safety of home, they faced danger. “Anywhere we went, we went, we would be in trouble if we didn’t go with our parents or an older cousin that they really trusted,” he said. “If you walked by yourself you had to watch every direction, behind you and in front of you, sides. Someone might chuck a rock at you or

something.” If it wasn’t thieves, it was other kids, resentful of anyone with enough money to attend school. “Some people were mad if you went to school. They thought, ‘He’s all rich now because he’s going to school,’” Buomkouth said. “Some kids would jump you and your parents would never see you again. They’d kill you or take you somewhere and make you their slave.” In a lawless country run by a corrupt and ineffective government, there were dozens of ways to die on a 30 minute walk to school. “Everyone’s driving 140 (kilometres per hour) on the road, and if someone’s trying to cross they will not stop, because time is money,” Buomkouth said. “And if someone gets run over, no one cares. Maybe 10 cars will pass and run the same person over.

Maybe later a family person will come along later. One time I walked on the road and whoa, I never heard the end of it.” Had Buomkouth and his family remained in Kenya, it seemed only a matter of time until tragedy would befall them. And so, as a new decade dawned the family made their second major move. Their name was randomly drawn from a government database — an emigration lottery of sorts — and they were given the opportunity to leave and go anywhere in the United States or Canada. Early in 2000, knowing barely any English, Buomkouth found himself on an airplane bound for Toronto’s Pearson International Airport His mom, Nyalew Kuek, bundled the kids up in far more clothing than they wanted

to wear and listened patiently as they complained. “We were wearing so much stuff, we could barely breathe,” Buomkouth recalled. “But some of the people told us if we didn’t wear it, our ears would fall off.” The airplane landed safely and the family was hustled onto a bus that would take them to immigrant housing. It was cold, and as 10-year-old Buomkouth gawked out the window he saw snow. “And I ask my mom, ‘What’s that?’ She says it’s snow and it’s really cold, but I thought she was lying,” Buomkouth said. “I looked again and said, ‘Mom. Sports Kayaking The Chilliwack Centre of Excellence is running beginner kayak lessons Aug. 20-21 on Cultus Lake. From 1 to 3 p.m. each day, paddlers with zero kayaking experience will learn basic safety and boat control in a fun and safe environment. At the end of the lessons, paddlers will be prepared for all club events held on flatwater, and for beginner river lessons held later in the summer. All equipment is provided. Paddlers should dress for the weather. CCE recommends a wetsuit if possible. The club has some to lend, but cannot guarantee availability or fit. If a wetsuit is not possible, CCE recommends snug clothing with no cotton. Spandex, fleece or polypropylene are best as a base layer with a wind breaker or rain jacket on top. Water shoes are also encouraged.

Old look for new logo Chilliwack’s junior A Chiefs revealed the logo they will wear in their return to the BCHL, and it has an oddly familiar look to it. The identifying marks bear a striking resemblance to those of the former Chiefs organization. The mock Indian head-dress has been retained and looks as it did six years ago. But the updated logo has an entirely new colour scheme, replacing black, yellow and white with crimson, red, gold and white. “We and the team owners put a lot of thought into the design in an attempt to recapture the spirit of the former Chiefs club while clearly marking the

arrival of a new generation of BCHL hockey in Chilliwack,” said Chiefs president Glen Ringdal in a Thursday afternoon news release. “These

are colors that have previously been associated with such teams as the Washington Redskins (National Football League) and the

University of Denver (Pioneers), and they closely mimic the colors of the seats in Prospera Centre.” The lettered portion of the logo also has a new font. “We believe our new team uniforms bearing the logo, which will be unveiled at the team’s first regular season game on Saturday, Sept. 24, will be very well received by our fans,” Ringdal said. “The logo and colors will be easily adaptable to Chiefs’ merchandise and apparel.” The club received help in the design from Chilliwack creative consultant Dan Mansell of Basecamp Creative. 1931-2011 It is with an eminent feeling of loss that we announce the passing of Jack. He passed from his earthly life, ASHDOWN surrounded by love, at his home in Chilliwack. Jack passed from the loving arms of his wife Donna, into the arms of his loving Father. His battle with his health started years ago. He showed us all what a true warrior he was right up to his last breath. He deﬁed the odds, he did the work, he had the will to pull himself from the edge many times and come back with a fresh “to do list” in his hand. Jack spent his life engaging himself in the lives of everyone he met. His heart and home have nurtured many and he was always a willing doer in the many charities and organizations that he lent his talents to over the years. Jack was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Donna; his big brother, Bud; twin sister, Jill; his children, Brian, Cheryl and Jodine; his grandchildren, Kimberley, Rebeccah, Shayla, Kristina, Zach, Lucas and Fay. Jack also had many good friends, extended family members and friends who consider themselves family. A service of remembrance of Jack’s life will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 1:30 pm at the Chilliwack United Church, 45835 Spadina Ave, Chilliwack. Viewing to be held prior to the service. At his request, his body will be laid to rest at Vedder View Gardens. This will be followed by a celebration of Jack’s life. Nov. 13, 1919 - July 27, 2011 It is with great love and sadness that the family announces the passing of Reinhard Earl RADKE Radke on July 27, 2011. Reinhard was born November 13, 1919 in Lamont, Alberta. Reinhard served in the armed forces during WWII and went over seas during this time. It was in the armed forces that he got his cook’s papers. After being in the armed forces he returned to Bruderheim, Alberta to farm. In 1968, Reinhard moved the family from Alberta to Chilliwack, BC. Here he worked for the Chilliwack army base as a cook in the mens’ mess. Reinhard also worked for Charles Wood catering and the Chilliwack school board. Reinhard is predeceased by his ﬁrst wife, Florence Radke and four children, Carol Harack, Keith Radke, Wayne Radke and Joyce Carpenter. Reinhard is survived by his second wife, Barbara Radke; his children, Brian Radke (Bonnie), Shirley Warren (Dale), Harvey Radke (Vivian), Darvin Radke (Toni), Debbie Moore (Phil); 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; 3 stepchildren and their families. A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 10am at Henderson’s Funeral Home. In remembrance donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

1960 0 2011 “Cowboy up” Robert Swetlikoff passed away suddenly on July 18, 2011. Bob was born June 16, SWETLIKOFF 1960 in Nelson, BC. He graduated from high school in Castlegar, he worked on several ranches in the Kamloops , Cache Creek and Ashcroft area as a ranch hand/Cowboy. Left to mourn his passing is his daughter Darrelle Ann and 3 grandchildren Kaden, Austin, Makenzie. His wife Joan and her children Jessica and Cassandra Ivey, mother Florence Swetlikoff, brothers John, Phil and Ron Swetlikoff, sister Elaine, and numerous nieces and nephews will also miss him dearly. Robert is predeceased by his father Nick and brother Nicky.
