Not all logging in spotted owl habitat, says Tamihi Robert Freeman The Progress The B.C. government appears ready to approve logging in a wildlife habitat area reserved for spotted owls in the Chilliwack River Valley. Road-building approved by the B.C. forests ministry began in the area last week, sparking an outcry from the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, which is fighting the proposed logging, along with members of the Friends of the Chilliwack River Valley. But Tamihi Logging Ltd. said in a letter faxed to The Progress on Friday that even if logging is approved, a “specified numIt sends d ber” of trees suita terrible able for “potential nest or roost sites message to for spotted owls” the world must be left standing under the ~ Gwen Barlee terms of the permit. And not all the planned cutblocks are in old-growth forest areas, the company statement said. “Some are in immature forest, regrowth after the 8,000-hectare forest fire in the Chilliwack River Valley in 1938 — habitat generally unsuitable for spotted owls.” Tamihi president Brian Dorman could not be reached for further comment Friday. Gwen Barlee, Wilderness Committee policy director, said that leaving a few trees for nesting or roosting sites “is not enough” for the spotted owl. “They need big habitat,” she said, which gives them forest cover from predators. She said the proposed logging is “a blueprint for pushing the species into extinction.” “It sends a terrible message to the world,” she said. “B.C. is the best place on Earth for protection of the spotted owl.”

Premier calls for ‘free-enterprise coalition’ at BC Liberal nomination meeting Robert Freeman The Progress The B.C. Liberal Party flexed it’s political muscle in the Chilliwack-Hope riding Saturday drawing a 250plus crowd to acclaim Laurie Throness as the party’s byelection candidate. Premier Christy Clark kicked off the meeting with a fiery campaign-style speech calling for support of the “thin blue line” of the free-enterprise coalition
to stop the New Democrats. “The NDP is making promises they can’t pay for,” she said. “We will be honest about what we can and cannot do.” Former Conservative MP Chuck Strahl repeated the theme of the need for a conservative alliance to win the byelection as he introduced Throness to a standing ovation. But neither Clark nor Strahl predicated a cakewalk to victory in this staunchly conservative riding.

“This is a ground war,” Strahl exhorted the crowd, urging them to talk up the B.C. Liberal record around office water coolers, and to “roll up their sleeves” and volunteer their time during the byelection campaign. “We know what the stakes are, we know the opportunity that’s ours, if we play our cards right,” he said. Clark said the free-enterprise coalition needs to stand together to win the byelection, pointing out that byelections

are traditionally unfavourable to governing parties. “This is going to be a tough byelection to win,” she said. “We are really going to have to sweat to make this happen.” “We can only stand strong, if we stand together,” she said. Barry Penner, whose resignation sparked the byelection, said the upcoming vote will be “about choosing someone to work for you.”

Chilliwack schools left off Fraser Institute report card Katie Bartel The Progress Four elementary schools in Chilliwack didn’t make the grade for the Fraser Institute rankings. In fact, they didn’t make any grade at all. The annual elementary school report card, showing which schools in the province have improved or fallen behind in terms of reading, writing and mathematics over the past five years was released Monday. However, Bernard elementary, Cultus Lake elementary, McCammon traditional and Robertson elementary were omitted from the report because they
didn’t have a large enough student sample size to draw from. The Fraser Institute requires data from a minimum of 15 students in one school. “The only way a school is not included is if the Ministry of Education provides us with less data than our minimum requirement,” said Peter Cowley, Fraser Institute director of school performance studies. “If we’ve got 15 student writers in each of the Grade 4 and 7 tests, that gives us a total of 90 tests upon which to base a rating for the school, and that’s a reasonable number. But if for some reason 15 kids wrote the reading in Grade 4, and 15 wrote the writing in Grade 4, but only 14
wrote the math, that school would not appear.” The Fraser Institute rankings are based on the annual provincewide Foundation Skills Assessment tests of academic skills in reading comprehension, writing and numeracy in grades 4 and 7. The report card ranks both private and public schools together. In Chilliwack, the top schools ranked this year were Mt. Cheam Christian school and John Calvin Christian school, both tied at 33 out of 860 other schools. The top public school ranked was East Chilliwack elementary at 102. And the lowest ranked school was Central elementary at 787. The rankings have long been
controversial. On the one side, the provincial government has promoted the FSAs as being a valuable tool in providing a snapshot of how students are doing across the province. And the Fraser Institute has boasted that its report card is the only objective, reliable tool for parents to compare the academic performance of their child’s school to other schools in their community. However, several teachers and some parents argue the rankings are more harmful than useful. Katharin Midzain, president of the Chilliwack Teachers’ Association, said FSA results don’t show the entire culture of the school.
“A school is more than a test score,” said Midzain. “You can’t objectify and quantify what goes on in a school with a test. It’s comparing apples to oranges. “The [Fraser Institute rankings] are not credible. They do not in any way reflect what a school is about. You can’t compare schools.” Chilliwack school district superintendent Michael Audet did not return calls to The Progress before press deadline. The full report card is available at http://britishcolumbia. compareschoolrankings.org/ ChooseReport.aspx kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33
More vaccine readied to battle whooping cough Jeff Nagel Black Press More vaccine doses are being stockpiled in case an outbreak of whooping cough in the eastern Fraser Valley spreads further west. Hope, Agassiz and Chilliwack have so far seen most of the more than 100 confirmed local cases of pertussis, a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes adults to cough for months but can be deadly to babies. Fraser Health will acquire another 50,000 doses of vaccine by the We know that second week of February in case public health offithere are some cials decide to widen parts of the their immunization program, which has so far Fraser Valley focused on the eastern where there Valley. “We’ve seen sporadic are groups of cases in Maple Ridge, in parents who Langley and in Surrey, so we know there’s some don’t believe in disease out there,” Chief the importance Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Van Buynder. of immunization “If it’s necessary in the next week or two we ~ Dr. Paul will run a program for Van Buynder the whole of the Fraser Valley.” Pertussis, or whooping cough, is considered more of an irritant for adults, but they act as carriers. Van Buynder said about half the very young children who contract pertussis are hospitalized and about one or two per cent of those hospitalized die. Three-quarters of infants infected get it from parents or close family members. California had a huge outbreak in 2009 that claimed the lives of 10 children, five more died in Saskatchewan in 2010 and two more children died last year just across the border in Washington State, where authorities are still battling an outbreak.

FrontCounter BC office opens in Chilliwack Robert Freeman The Progress A FrontCounter B.C. office opened in Chilliwack Monday to provide businesses with one-stop access to government approval processes. “This will benefit a lot of people, not only in Chilliwack but in the surrounding communities as well,” Chilliwack MLA John Les said, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the Forest Ministry building on Airport Road where the new office is located. Until now, the closest FrontCounter office was located in Surrey. “Business is booming in B.C., especially in the natural resources sector,” Agriculture Minister Don McRae said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Job creation depends on decisionmaking in the community, he said, so the B.C. Jobs Plan aimed to increase access to government agencies. “FrontCounter BC is one way of meeting that goal,” he said. FrontCounter staff will: • Guide clients through required authorizations; • Help clients complete applications; • Interpret land information, maps, management plans; • Follow-up and track the status of applications; • Liaise with ministries, agencies and governments; • Start referral process with First Nations; • Help identify and market economic development opportunities.
McRae said FrontCounter offices opened with eight locations in 2005 to make learning what permits and approvals are needed to startup a big or small business “less like a wild goose chase, and more like a trip to the grocery store.” Over 47,000 authorizations have been made since 2005 and more than 175,000 inquiries made, he said. The Chilliwack office is one of three new FrontCounter offices, bringing the total to 11 around the province, plus a toll-free call-in centre and online service. The toll-free number is 1-877-855-3222. The Chilliwack office website address is frontcounterbc.gov.bc.ca/contact/chilliwack.html rfreeman@theprogress.com

Five months into their job action against the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, teachers seem to be turning the screws tighter in their effort to negotiate a new contract. After essentially working to rule through the first half of the school year, not writing report cards, not attending staff meetings nor performing other administrative duties, teachers are now making more visible displays of their frustration. On Friday, teachers across the province were urged to wear black, as their way of illustrating a “dark day in education.” The teachers’ choice of date was not insignificant; Jan. 27 was the 10th anniversary of the Liberal government’s enactment of Bills 27 and 28, which stripped their contract of provisions for class sizes and composition. Both sides in the long-running dispute are still at the bargaining table, but there’s little sign of progress. Meanwhile, parents and students are caught in the middle. Without the feedback from proper report cards, parents can’t get a true reading on where their children stand, how they’re progressing, what areas might need remedial help. Students may also be suffering. While it’s hard to dispute the dedication and hard work of the teachers, even in the face of this contract squabble, as the impasse drags on it will be more and more difficult for them to shield their frustration from their classrooms. Both sides say they’re looking out for the future. The teachers say they are fighting for the future of education. The government says it is fighting for the province’s financial future. The time to settle their differences is now. ~ Black Press

Slow progress on Canada’s biodiversity Is Canada delivering on commitments to protect marine biodiversity? Apparently not. According to the Royal Society of Canada Expert Panel, “Canada has made little substantive progress in meeting its commitments to sustain marine biodiversity. Although Canada has developed and signed on to sound policies and agreements, and heralded good ideas with strong rhetoric, comparatively little has actually been done leaving many of our national and international obligations unfulfilled.” Furthermore, too much power lies in the hands of the federal fisheries and oceans minister to the detriment of implementing sound, scientific practices. The report, Sustaining Canada’s Marine Biodiversity: Responding to the Challenges posed by Climate Change, Fisheries, and Aquaculture, issued this month, wasted no words with the blunt-

ness of its message. In recognizing that three oceans – the Atlantic, the Arctic, and the Pacific – both sustain and protect a nation, they have all suffered as a result of human activity, greed, and thoughtlessness. First, there is overfishing with its detrimental consequences to the food web. Second, there is aquaculture with its consequences from parasites, disMargaret ease and altered EVANS habitats especially on coastal spawning streams. Third, there is the impact of climate change notably ocean warming, acidification, and altered sea levels that are all tugging at the foundations of marine life. The most distressing (a.k.a. maddening) thing about mismanagement of a natural resource
is the staggering cost. When the Atlantic cod fishery collapsed, it was the greatest numerical loss of a vertebrate animal in Canada, 30,000-40,000 people lost their jobs, and it cost $2-3 billion in social and economic financial aid. How logical is that in the face of the alternative: sustainable management? Twenty years on and what’s changed? Next to nothing. The report states that “One consequence of this lack of initiative is that, among industrialized fishing nations, the status of Canada’s marine fish stocks is among the worst in the world.” Pretty strong stuff. A critical problem is that Harper’s government doesn’t want to recognize science-based fact, leaving things instead to ministers to make decisions, individuals who underscore the political line long before they put pencil to sciencebased conservation policy. That’s hardly clever thinking.
As panel chairman Jeff Hutchings said at a press conference in Vancouver last week, there doesn’t seem to be a target for recovery of the east coast cod fishery 20 years after its collapse. Canada has the world’s longest coastline at 243,000 kilometres yet, according to the Atlas of Canada, only 0.5 per cent of our oceans are protected while, globally, only 1.4 per cent of the world’s oceans are protected. The depletion of fish stocks worldwide is one of the most pressing environmental issues, so much so that the United Nations said in January that the worldwide fishing industry could benefit by an annual $50 million boost if fish stocks were allowed time to recover from more conservative fishing policies. According to the report Keeping Track of our Changing Environment released by the UN Environment Program in 2011, 32 per cent of the world’s fish stocks

have been depleted by decades of overfishing, poor coastal and marine management, pollution from land-based farming and industrial development, and destruction of critical habitats such as coral reefs and mangroves. The Royal Society makes six recommendations, those being that Canada should 1) make its international leadership in ocean stewardship a top government priority, 2) resolve regulatory conflicts of interest in marine management; 3) reduce the power of the fisheries and oceans minister in fisheries management, 4) increase its rate of policy implementation, 5) keep up with changes needed for sustainable biodiversity, and 6) set objectives and targets and meet them. It’s time to step up to the plate with some assertive, conservation action.

Stronger deterrent would protect kids know first hand how pedophiles are one way with adults and one way with the children they prey on. They know how to play the “poor me” game, to gain the trust of adults and the silence of their victims. Their goal is to convince the parents of children and the authorities that they have reformed, so they can gain access and trust with children again. One look online at the “pedophile support groups” and you will realize how callous and ruthless these people in our society are. They have a “pedophile support day” where they wear pink to show support for each other, they have emblems they wear to identify each other. They believe that they are being discriminated of their “sexual pref-
erence” by society. The majority of these people created addictions in their victims by supplying or forcing them to use drugs and/ or alcohol. I would like each person to think how it would feel if for five hundred times the same person will come into your home and sexually assault you. Then the court system only requests a sentence of twelve to eighteen months, of which only half will likely be served. A culture can be judged and defined by how it treats it’s children and the most vulnerable. This IS a great shame and strike against our “justice” system. I am requesting the newspaper prints my full name as my support for these children. I am a sexual assault survivor and I have nothing to hide and no shame in this. Tara Schley

I am very disheartened with the justice system about the very minor amount of a jail term requested for the man that repeatedly sexually assaulted two children. Twelve to eighteen months is an affronting and a diminishing sentence. Your article stated he sexually assaulted one victim over five hundred times. Was this man charged for each incident of assault? If not, why? I would like the RCMP and Crown Counsel to answer why each time these children were assaulted that this man was not charged for each assault. It is time that we put our empathy into the victims and put priority in protecting our children. I am a survivor of child sexual assault. I also survived the court system. I

Cuts part of secret agenda The Prime Minister’s recent announcement of proposed changes the age an individual can receive Old Age Security, or OAS, from 65 to 67 is unacceptable. For those of you not familiar with the OAS benefit, the proposed cuts will reduce your monthly income by $500 (on average) per month, or a reduction of $24,000 in pension benefits for a couple. For individuals in their 30s, 40s or 50s unable to save for retirement due to current financial pressures of day-to-day living, the OAS ben-
efits will be critical funds. During the last election campaign did anyone hear the Conservative government mention cuts to pensions? I did not remember discussions about cuts to pensions. Perhaps pension cuts are part of the Harper government’s secret agenda? What’s next? Cuts to CPP? It would appear cuts to social programs and a lower standard of living for Canadians will be Stephen Harper’s legacy. Brad McLean Chilliwack.
Getting gassed? Are we the product of opportunists or does it actually cost an extra $0.05/ litre to bring fuel to Chilliwack? I took a ride on my motorcycle this fabulous weekend and was astonished at the price differences per litre of fuel from Chilliwack at $1.20/lt, Abbotsford at $1.15/lt, Mission. Deroche and beyond at $1.12/lt to Agassiz where the price again rose to $1.20/lt. I realize it’s a free market but up to $0.08/lt difference in the surrounding market seems like gouging to me. Any comment from our fuel stations in Chilliwack?

Cuts place burden on struggling seniors It makes me upset that seniors in the future (once the Conservatives have passed the budget) will have to wait two more years (age 67) to receive their old age security pensions. It is approximately $509 a month which people living close to the poverty line need to get by on. I also realize that the OAP plan must be protected for the next generation. But have all alternatives been looked
at? I am not an economist but maybe people who earn more than $80,000 in income should get no pension and forget the claw back. Make the waiting time to qualify 15 years instead of 10 years. Perhaps those who are richer and have over $500,000 dollars in savings don’t qualify for OAP. A combination of restraints could stop Old Age Security Pension cutbacks to those most needy seniors.
By depriving low income seniors of those two years of pension will only put more pressure on the provincial government to pay the difference and meet their needs. If the Conservatives are not smart enough to figure out a better solution than the one proposed; then they should meet with the braintrust of the other parties (Liberals, NDP etc.) and try to find a better way to solve the problem.
I am going to show mercy and not even bring up the subject of MP pension plans that need to be overhauled and brought into alignment with the rest of the working class pension plans in Canada. Mr. Harper, mentioning this while out of the country was not too smart. But if you have a majority parliament who really cares? I voted for you last time... but now? Gary Crossett

Throness acclaimed as BC Liberal candidate THRONESS from Front “It’s not about choosing the most bombastic, who can spread the most BS,” he said, “but someone who has the capability, the patience, and the character that best fits Chilliwack-Hope.” “It’s my strong opinion, that person is Laurie Throness,” he said. Throness said in his acceptance speech that B.C. “can’t afford” an NDP government based on democratic-socialist principles as set out in the party’s constitution. “I thought socialism had gone out of style, along with disco boots and banana bikes,” he said. A strong Liberal/Conservative alliance is needed to keep the NDP from forming government as a new economic storm looms on the horizon, he said. “Now is not the time to hand the keys of the treasury to a party that’s stuck in the past … that can only spend other people’s money,” he said. Throness said in the upcoming byelection campaign that he will “boldly defend” the B.C.

Liberal economic record, which shows the government is “doing better” than the federal Tories, and still spending more on health and social programs “than ever before.” “We are going to continue to provide for British Columbians in need,” he said. Dale Wheeldon, president of the riding’s constituency association, said after the meeting that he was pleased with the
“fantastic” turn-out at what was billed as a “Super Saturday” blitz to kick off the party’s byelection campaign. He also repeated the theme of the need for a conservative coalition to fend off the NDP. “We need a coalition of rightwing conservatives and liberals to support free-enterprise under one banner to defeat the NDP in this riding,” he said. rfreeman@theprogress.com

OWL from Front Glen Thompson, Friends of the Chilliwack River Valley spokesman, said if logging is approved, the few weeks of work will mean “lots of money for the company, but a piddly thing for the workers.” A ministry spokesman, speaking on a background basis, said a WHA is “not technically” a protected area, like a provincial or national park, but designed more for the management of wildlife, while allowing other uses like logging. A government fact sheet states that WHAs were created in March, 2011, to “protect and manage” a total 226,000 hectares Crown forest as “protected owl habitat” in the Chilliwack forest district. The ministry spokesman said that in an effort to protect “better” habitat for the spotted owl elsewhere in the district, a “mitigation agreement” was made with
Tamihi to allow a limited amount of logging near Ford Mountain and Post Creek. This agreement came after the government expanded wildlife habitat areas in 2008, which affected Tamihi’s harvesting rights in those areas. The Post Creek WHA was expanded from 1,100 hectares to more than 3,000 hectares, according to Tamihi. The government fact sheet states that one new spotted owl was identified about three kilometres away from the nearest planned harvest area in September last year. Ministry staff will monitor the owl’s movements during harvesting, the fact sheet states, and work will be suspended if the owl moves in to the harvest area.

Leaving for the heart of Africa Katie Bartel The Progress Africa’s pull on Christa Roby is too strong to keep the registered massage therapist in Chilliwack. Following a six-month missionary trip through South Africa, Roby wasn’t even home a year before making the big decision to pack up her life and head back. “Africa grabs at your heart and holds on,” she said. “For me, it’s harder to be away from Africa than it is here. After being there so much and having that time with the people there, and seeing someone who has so little, but gives so much, it just becomes something you want to be a part of, something you want to share in.” In 2010, Roby went to Africa with Hands at
Work, a Christian-based, non-profit, aid organization that’s based in South Africa and empowers the country’s natives to support their most vulnerable. The organization educates locals in areas of nutrition, healthcare, childcare, income-generating opportunities. It helps build orphanages, runs feeding programs, teaches gardening techniques. And it uses only the resources readily available to each community. For six months Roby worked and toured through some of the poorest communities teaching massage therapy techniques to locals. She witnessed extreme poverty, people living on urine-soaked mattresses, people who had been so debilitated by stroke they hadn’t moved for years, people near death and writhing in pain. And yet, despite their hardships,
they continued to smile. Roby was blown away. She had to be a permanent part of that. And so, she is giving up her career, saying goodbye to friends and family, giving up her love of camping, hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, giving up stability and security. But it’ll be worth it. “It’s where my heart is,” she said. “I feel alive when I’m there... To see the smile on a child’s face, the touch of their hand in yours, the laughter in their voices, to receive a hug from a granny so full of life, it overflows your heart as you bounce in their arms. It’s raw, it’s innocent, it’s a deeper sense of fulfillment.” Roby will again be partnered with Hands at Work doing whatever task is required of her. Continued: FUNDRAISER/ p22
ii MAKING CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE The Musicworx AdCheque system really does work - I’ve checked!” I’ve been a customer for nearly 10 years and my first big system was worth way more than the Corsica we built it in! It was SO loud! At first I shopped around: I’d get a quote from Musicworx and then scour the competition to find a better deal but I never could! AdCheque seriously works – they check competitors’ prices and guarantee the lowest price. I’ve recommended them without hesitation to my family, my friends and my co-workers and they’ve never let me down.

The Mission... The Vision... An Enduring Purpose... A Future Focus... Who Am I... My Promise... These words begin to describe how I differ for the norm. I have spent the past 16 years in the Sales, Marketing, and Advertising field. It is this background that gives me a unique perspective of how a home should be marketed. Are you tired of leaving messages that aren’t being returned? Do you find it annoying when the homes advertised in the newspapers are not as they seem? Wouldn’t it be nice to work with someone who understands your point of view? Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face than having satisfied clients whom I have helped to reach their real estate goals. I provide you with the highest degree of professional service excellence and customer satisfaction that is “TOUGH to BEAT.” I am Mike DellaFortuna, and it would be my pleasure to help you.

I am pleased to be a part of the RE/MAX organization, the #1 name in real estate in Chilliwack and around the world. You can be assured that your home will get maximum exposure when you list your most important asset with me. When looking to purchase a home it is important to work with an agent you enjoy and trust. I will take all the time you need to make sure you find that perfect place by offering straight forward and helpful information. I love living and working in Chilliwack and as such I have been heavily involved in the community as a city councillor, a member on the board of the Chilliwack Economic Partners Corp, the YMCA, and I am currently a member of the Chilliwack Rotary Club. Please call me if I can help you with any of your real estate needs, and remember, when you are BUYING or SELLING JUST ADD SPICE
It seems like this year has gone by so fast and I am delighted to have hooked up with past clients and met new ones along the way. Connecting with people using good communication, honesty and professionalism are the cornerstones of my business. I absolutely love what I do and I can’t imagine anything more exciting than real estate and I’m sure prospective buyers and sellers also feel excited as well as stressed about the whole process. At the end of the day I believe in treating people how I would like to be treated and that involves trust, patience and the experience to provide sound real estate advice. With that in mind I’ll look after you and your interests every step of the way. Give me a call or visit me at the Kiosk at the Mall or my office if you’re thinking of making a move. I’d love to hear from you!

there are personalities involved, and real estate transactions can sometimes be difficult. The buyers may seem unreasonable if they make an offer that is considerably less than the sellers are willing to accept. At that point the buyers may become offended by the sellers’ attitude. When professional Realtors are involved, the process is much less adversarial. The two parties see very little to none of each other until the rough edges have been smoothed out and there has been a meeting of the minds. Realtors know how to keep personalities out of the transaction and to help both sides reach a mutually agreeable compromise. When selling your home, your Realtor will also provide you with a seller’s disclosure form. You have a choice of either making the repairs or letting the buyers know what the problems are, especially any potentially serious problems. Some buyers will want a structural inspection so that they will have a good idea about what they are getting into. Even if the buyers don’t ask for an expert to look at the house, it is the seller’s responsibility to disclose any defects in the property that they know about. A concealed problem may come back to haunt you after the closing. Many lawsuits involve undisclosed defects, and the settlement of these cases makes the cost of repair or the price concession during the sales look like a real bargain. Another good reason why it pays to work with a professional. While any sale can potentially become complicated and difficult, a Realtor is trained to tackle such difficulties so your transaction ends on a positive note. Real estate professionals work hard to maintain a good rapport between the parties involved in every transaction, to make your real estate experience a good one!

I have lived in Chilliwack for most of my life, raised a family and have watched our city and surrounding areas grow and prosper. Having built, bought and sold homes in the Chilliwack area, I made real estate a passion and hobby for many years. By turning my hobby into a profession I have proven my success and experience by listening to my clients on what they want and need in a home. I pride myself on having an excellent work ethic, a strong sense of responsibility and being highly motivated. I am dedicated to my clients as they are my most valuable asset and they in turn become my #1 fan. Therefore, it only stands to reason that I have your best interest at heart by,

A Realtor’s job is to sell your home for the best price, in the shortest time. Another important part of the Realtor’s responsibility is to make the sales process as easy as possible for you, the seller. Your Realtor can eliminate much of the hassle involved in selling your home, while providing you and your family with the “peace of mind” you need during this sensitive time. Your Realtor can help you avoid the inconvenience of having buyers stop by unannounced to see your home or wasting your time with those who are not financially qualified to buy your home or just strangers coming by to look. When you list your home with a sales professional, you get an array of valuable services, including the widest possible exposure through Multiple Listing Service as well as newsprint advertising and Internet websites. These are the best vehicles to get the most qualified buyers to see your home. Realtors educate their clients about the local market and work with other Realtors to match buyers and sellers. They help sellers to prepare their home or land for sale. First They help the seller to decide on a price; this involves an analysis of properties that have recently sold and properties that are currently on the market. This preparation may also include getting an outside opinion from a home inspector about the condition of your home and making the needed repairs or cosmetic improvements. People who try to sell their own homes begin to appreciate the expertise of professional Realtors as soon as their first offer comes in. They want to sell their home, and they have found prospects who want to buy. But what happens next? When the negotiating process begins, things can get “sticky”. First,

Chilliwack is not my hometown, but it feels like it is. I was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and spent most of my growing up on a dairy farm. After graduation I moved to Calgary for 15 years, then my husband was transferred to the coast and we made our home in Surrey. I moved out here as a single mom with my three kids almost 12 years ago. We loved Chilliwack immediately and my family has had a very happy life here. So I feel like I’m well qualified to work with new people coming to the area, as well as those who have been here forever, because I believe in this city. I think I’ve found a little piece of paradise and the wisest people know this to be true. Give me a call anytime for your complimentary market evaluation or if you know someone moving to town, pass along my name, because Chilliwack is my hometown now.

“This is not make believe, it’s not stuff that just happens in the movies, it’s real,” said Hiscoe. “Learning how to protect yourself is one of those life skills everyone should know.” However, the 10-week course isn’t about learning how to fight, it’s about learning how to recognize potential dangers, how to conduct risk assessments, and how to respond to situations when they arise with appropriate defensive skills. “It’s about having the confidence and the ability to know if something happens, you can respond,” said Hiscoe. “Even if you’re just creating a distance, and having an authoritative voice, at least you’re portraying that you can handle yourself. “When you look at attempted abductions, the ones who get away are the ones who fight back. do you counter that? You’ve got to slow them down, you’ve got to be loud, you’ve got to fight back,” said Hiscoe. “I would much rather be in the hospital with a black eye and broken nose knowing that I fought back than laying somewhere severely injured.” The 10-week self defense academy is $325 and runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m. from Feb. 20 to April 26. Rough road trip for Chiefs Eric J. Welsh, The Progress One bad weekend can kill you in the tightly packed Interior conference playoff race. With three BCHL teams battling for two playoff spots, points are at a premium and every game matters. If the Chilliwack Chiefs end up missing the playoffs this year, they may be able to look back to Saturday night as the reason why. The locals started the weekend with a 5-1 loss in Penticton. Fair enough. That was expected against a team that has steam rolled ever yone in the league this year. Saturday though, that was supposed to be the winnable one against a Trail Smoke Eaters squad the Chiefs had already beaten six times this year. Trail’s supposed to be as easy a two points as you’ll find in the BCHL these days. But when the dust settled, they’d vanquished the visiting Chiefs 5-3. Worse still, they were powered by a Chilliwack kid, Connor Tiechko, who scored three times to torpedo his hometown team. The Chiefs got off to a fine start in this one, leading 2-0 before most fans had settled into their seats. Anderson White opened the scoring just 61 seconds in, and Josh Hansen scored his ninth of the season off a goal-mouth scramble at 3:21. The Smoke Eaters got one back late in the first period as Tiechko jumped on a turnover at the Chilliwack blueline, skated in alone and beat Chiefs netminder Bryton Udy through the wickets for his 11th. Back-to-back power play goals by Tiechko and Riley McDougall gave Trail the lead
midway through period two, and Tiechko completed the hattrick on a breakaway late in the third to put the Smokies up 4-2. Derek Huisman gave the Chiefs late life, scoring with 66 seconds left. But Trail’s Brent Baltus scored 21 seconds later to put the game away. The net result of the weekend losses is that Chilliwack is now in serious danger of slipping out of a playoff spot. The Prince George Spruce Kings leapfrogged the locals, moving into third place in the conference with 54 points. The Chiefs have 51 points with one game in hand on the Sprucies, but the Vernon’s Vipers are now just two points back. Head coach Harvey Smyl has been saying all season that there’s plenty of hockey to be played. But the games are going by quickly, and Chilliwack suddenly has just 14 left. The next one is a toughie as the Vees skate into town Tuesday night (7 p.m. start). Penticton equalled the all-time consecutive wins mark (29) when they beat Chilliwack on Friday. Another win gives them 30, breaking the mark set by the 198990 New Westminster Royals. Smyl was an assistant coach for the Royals. Chilliwack is one of three clubs to beat the Vees this season. In their home opener Sept. 24, the Chiefs trounced the Vees 7-1. But Penticton hasn’t lost since Nov. 5, going 41-3-0-2 overall. The Vees have nine of the league’s top 11 scorers. They lead the league in goals scored (256) by 66 over the next closest team (the Coquitlam Express have 190). They have also allowed the fewest goals with 101.
Chilliwack’s Tamara Pickford played her last home games for the University of British Columbia women’s CIS hockey team last weekend. But the 35-year-old is adamant about staying involved in the sport. BOB FRID/ UBC ATHLETICS
Pickford turns page on CIS career Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Saturday night marked a special moment in the hockey career of Tamara Pickford. Around 7 p.m. the puck dropped at center ice at the Father David Bauer Arena. For the next two and a half hours (roughly), Pickford and her University of British Columbia Thunderbirds took on the University of Manitoba Bisons in CIS women’s hockey. Pickford skated a mile and provided typically stellar two-way play. And when the final whistle blew, this chapter of her life came to a close. Pickford’s CIS career isn’t technically over, not until she plays a pair of road games in Saskatoon next weekend. But in her mind, the final home game marked a symbolic turning of the page. “Especially because we’re playing at the old arena and not the new one,” the Chilliwack native mused. “That makes it more significant to me because of all the things the team has done in that rink.” Like the night

After all these years, I think my passion is double or even triple what it was when I first started playing. It’s such an unbelievable game.” If all this sounds like a post-mortem on Pickford’s hockey career, it really shouldn’t. While this weekend might mark the end of her on-ice exploits at UBC, there’s far more to come. She leaves the university holding a degree in kinesiology, and she also has her ‘High Performance 1’ coaching certification. Pickford’s been running a side business called Passion on Ice, providing on and off ice instruction to those who seek her out. She’s heading to Chicago in the summer and young players in Whitefish, Montana, have benefited from her tutelage. Maybe she’ll be a
coach. Maybe she’ll be a trainer. Maybe, just maybe she’ll find a way to still be a player. Pickford is exceedingly well suited to continue a career in hockey in one way or another. “There’s so much more that I want to encounter in it (hockey), and I’ve realized there’s different avenues other than being a player,” she said. “I still love the game and I won’t ever give up. They’re not stopping me unless I’m on a stretcher or deathbed. Along the way, she hopes to advance the cause of women’s hockey and open up doors that were closed to her. “Cammi (Granato) and I talked in the past about gathering all the older BC players together to have a huge alumni game, maybe as a fundraising thing for a child foundation,” Pickford said, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. “Maybe I’ll have time to organize it now. Trying to sell it is a big thing, both provincially, nationally and internationally. If I could train a national team overseas and play for a club team, playing at a high level while still doing my career? That would be the ultimate.”

Cascades take next step by beating Thunderbirds
Dan Kinvig, Black Press Friday night was a historic one for the University of the Fraser Valley basketball programs, as the Cascades men’s and women’s hoopsters both registered their first-ever victories over perennial powerhouse UBC. The UFV women opened Friday’s doubleheader with a 65-57 triumph over the Thunderbirds, and the men matched that feat with a 77-72 win in the nightcap. Both UBC teams had come in with matching 12-2 records, and both were ranked No. 3 in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national poll. The Cascades, now in their sixth season of CIS competition, had never been able to register so much as a single win over the traditional front-runners from Vancouver. But Friday’s results backed up what’s become apparent over the course of the season – that both UFV teams are forces to be reckoned with in the Canada West conference. For the UFV women, a terrific defensive effort in the second half paved the way for their landmark win. The Cascades limited the T-Birds to just nine points in both the third and fourth quarters – eyebrow-raising numbers, to be certain, as they rallied from a four-point deficit at the half. “Defensively, we were pretty strong tonight, noted head coach Al Tuchscherer. “They’ve got a lot of length on us, and there were some things we wanted to do, and I thought we did them pretty well.
“Nicole and Sarah Wierks (both from Chilliwack) came up big, Aieisha (Luyken) came up big. We really just wanted to keep them in front of us and give them one opportunity, and we did a better job of that in the second half. Neither team shot particularly well from the field – UFV converted at a 40.7 per cent clip, just ahead of UBC’s 38.6. But the Cascades made the most of their looks from downtown, knocking down 8-of-20 three-pointers. UBC
Community
struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 2-of-13. The Cascades executed tremendously well down the stretch, finishing the game on a 10-2 run to snap UBC’s eight-game winning streak. “UBC is probably the top program in the country, Tuchscherer emphasized, reflecting on the significance of the win. “The record of success they have, and what they’ve been able to do year in and year out is something you model your program after. “For us to get a
victory is a big deal. They’re a good squad, and more importantly, we’re playing well down the stretch. Luyken counted four treys among her team-high 17 points, while the sibling duo of Nicole Wierks (12 points, six rebounds) and Sarah Wierks (eight points, eight rebounds) also excelled for the Cascades. The Cascades improved to 11-5, and combined with Trinity Western’s 66-61 loss at Thompson Rivers on Friday, they clinched second place in Canada

You may be eligible to have the government pay for most or even all of a valuable energy efficient upgrade to your home! Most Homes built before 1994 have no insulation in their crawlspace or basement and little or no insulation in their attics! If you’re interested in saving up to 35% on your heating and cooling costs, call us today before the Provincial Funding expires! See the box below for actual examples of what your savings could be! Previous Energuide and ecoENERGY recipients are eligible too. Landlords, co-ops, strata’s and corporate owners are eligible. Call us today to see if you qualify. You must act quickly as time is running out on these grants!
