Message from the Mayor On behalf of Chilliwack Council, it is my pleasure to wish you and yours a very happy and healthy 2012. The New Year is a great time to start thinking about making healthy habits a permanent part of your lifestyle. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor recreational activities, Chilliwack offers a multitude of opportunities to get active.

This guide is the result of the partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District No.33, who assist in the support of the Community School Associations, of which two new ones have been formed: the Rosedale Traditional Community School and the Greendale Elementary Community School.

Each contributor to the Winter Leisure Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of the residents of our community.

I encourage you to read through this guide and take advantage of all we have to offer. Perhaps make a resolution to try something new this year. You won’t regret it.

The City of Chilliwack has a facility to meet all your needs: Evergreen Hall Located at 9291 Corbould Street, the Evergreen Hall is a prime location to host gatherings of various types and sizes. The Cheam Room is a full size gymnasium, which can host 450 people in a banquet setting and as many as 650 people in a theatre style setting. The Minto Room has a capacity to host 20 –25 people and is ideal for small gatherings. The Slesse Room has a capacity to host up to 76 people if a mid size setting is what you are seeking.

The Landing Sports Centre

There is more to this facility than meets the eye. Located at 45530 Spadina Avenue, the Landing Sports Centre’s main floor has the capacity to host gatherings for as many as 1870 people. The Loft area provides space large enough for 250 people in a banquet setting and up to 300 people in a theatre setting. Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture Information Portable Display Screen

The City of Chilliwack has a portable display screen that stands 10 feet high, 17 feet long and contains more then 245,000 LED lights, similar to the screens you find in major sporting venues. It has the ability to display DVD/Video presentations, cable and live camera.

Exhibition Field

Exhibition field is one of the flagstone outdoor facilities located at what is referred to as the Landing site. Formerly a ¼ mile horse racing track the area was renovated into one of the top grass facilities in the lower mainland.

The facility consists of a CFL size football field, a smaller practice area and a covered stadium containing approximately 2000 seats. Commonly known as the “Home of the Huskers”, Exhibition Field has also been the venue of choice for White Cap games, as well as other high caliber soccer competitions, field hockey and rugby.

Townsend Park

The Artificial Turf Field constructed at the East end of Townsend Park has some exciting features: • It can sustain up to 6x the play of natural turf • It doesn’t require rest periods for turf to heal • It reduces the burden on other natural fields • Maintenance costs are similar to premier natural turf • New turf technologies incorporate crumb rubber to reduce injuries • This field is only closed when snow accumulates on it. Otherwise it stays open in all weather conditions

Twin Rinks

Located at 5725 Tyson Road the Twin Rinks ice arena was founded in 1982. It is the premier location for public skating, drop-in hockey as well as organized ice sports such as Minor Hockey, Seniors Recreational Hockey, Figure Skating and Speed Skating.

If you are planning a special event such as a birthday party, or corporate event, Twin Rinks can accommodate you with skate rentals and meeting rooms for office festivities.

Parks & Trails

Trail Improvements Vedder Rotary Trail

The Vedder Rotary Trail, Chilliwack’s most popular footpath with 18,000 users per month, stretches 7.5km from near Vedder Road to the Vedder Dyck, west of the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.

The trail can be conveniently accessed from parking lots at Vedder, Peach and Lickman Roads or by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.

Once all additions and upgrades are completed the Vedder Rotary Trail will form a loop trail system linking paths on both sides of the Vedder Rivery.

Dog Off-Leash Parks

A dog off-leash park is an ideal place where owners can take their dogs to run freely without having them on a leash.

However when visiting these parks we ask that: • Pets are controlled and not violent or aggressive • Owners remain on site and have their dog’s leash visible • Toys and snacks are kept off site • Dogs are “picked up” after and any holes that are dug are filled in before leaving Dog off-leash parks are located at: South Chilliwack – The former Canadian Forces Base at Nord Road North Chilliwack – Island 22 at CartmellRoad.

Waterfowl in Parks

While it is enjoyable to feed the waterfowl it is detrimental to them and our environment. and creates numerous problems such as: • Disturbs natural migration patterns, leading to a high concentration of birds • Overcrowding can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population • Feeding destroys the bird natural ability to forage and find food for themselves • Deprives the birds of essential nutrients • It reduces useable areas due to large amount of feces and aggressive fowl Feeding waterfowl is also illegal and can result in a fine of up to $2000 (Bylaw #2974) Please help us control the waterfowl population and remember; real geese do not eat bread.

City Trees

City trees are managed by the City of Chilliwack Parks department. Caring for them is an investment with a measurable return.

A healthy tree provides us with oxygen, removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, cool surfaces such as pavement and cars, and provides habitat to wildlife.

In order to ensure the optimum health of this urban forest the City inventories and provides an ongoing maintenance program.

The maintenance program includes: • Improvement of tree structure • Removal of any hazards such as dead, damaged or diseased wood • Pruning of lower limbs to protect grooming equipment.

The maintenance program does not include: • Leaf litter in gutters • Sunlight enhancement • Satellite reception • View enhancement

Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture Information Street Entertainment Program

In 2011 the City of Chilliwack implemented a Street Entertainment Program. The goal in doing so was to encourage people to visit our downtown parks and business area and to introduce to the community to more cultural opportunities through a variety of musical and performance art.

The performance season runs from April 1st through to September 30th each year. Performers interested in becoming a street entertainer participate in a small review process and can be approved to entertain at a number of locations in with the downtown core.

City Hanging Baskets

The City installs 90 hanging baskets annually on the ornamental light poles throughout the downtown area.

The baskets are planted and ready for installation by the beginning of June and once installed are hooked up to an automatic irrigation system and are fertilized weekly.

This maintenance routine and the help of nature allow for beautiful blooms well into the fall months. Take the time to stroll downtown and enjoy the flowers and the other sites of the city.

Did You Know

The City of Chilliwack has over 32 kms of developed or semi-developed footpaths and biking trails. There are also over 89 parks, which together make up over 340 hectares of green space. The parks vary in equipment and services and offer numerous ways residents can enjoy an active lifestyle all year round. Available amenities include playgrounds, picnic tables, basketball courts, hockey nets and tennis courts.

Throughout the City of Chilliwack, there are 58 sports fields and 95 ball diamonds owned by either the City or School District No. 33.

Any group or organization planning to use any of these outdoor sports facilities can do so by contacting the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department at 604-793-2904.

Founded in May 2010, The Chilliwack Voodoo Derby Dollz Roller Derby Association is proud to be one of the Lower Mainland’s newest roller derby leagues!

The VDDRDA is a skater-owned and operated league. Our mission is to create and promote an environment that fosters physical and mental strength, and empowers the independent spirit of women in the sport of roller derby and the community at large.

We are happy to teach all there is to know about roller derby and can help any skater obtain the skills required to be a part of the game.

There are also many opportunities within the league for all types of roller derby enthusiasts including coaches, referees and so much more!

The Fraser River: Its Spirit and Place For 10,000 years the Fraser River has pierced through the centre of our Province before reaching the Fraser Valley and a slow meandering journey to the Pacific Ocean. For most of its life, the river offered food and material 10

resources that enabled the Stó:lō, (the People of the River), to thrive and expand in a series of riverside villages located along the river. The section that flows by Chilliwack is called the gravel reach. Here the river supports 30 species of fish, and provides rich habitats for resident and migrating birds and a host of mammal species.

In the last century the river began to change. Flood control measures and developments have altered the landscape and are threatening the health of the river. The museum’s new exhibit looks at the history of the Fraser River and why, today, it is important to

understand the processes that created the river and have sustained it for so many centuries.

The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Connect with Nature

Come out and discover this peaceful place, enjoy a walk and watch for the wide variety of wildlife including one of the largest breeding colonies of Great Blue Herons in B.C. There are no admission fees to walk the site or to visit the Rotary Interpretive Centre.

The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a beautiful wetland located along the Vedder River at the south end of Sumas Prairie Road in Greendale. The programs and services at this City of Chilliwack site are managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society.

Swimming Lesson Description and Fees Parent & Tot (6 – 35 months) $43.00/10 classes We introduce your young child to water, build their water confidence, and educated you as the parent on pertinent water safety. Our program consists of singing songs, playing interactive games, and fun group activities in order to appeal to your child’s curiosity and desire for play while we increase their comfort in and under the water, promote balance and movement and begin swim skill acquisition.

Preschool 1 – 2 (Ages 3 – 5) $49.00/10 classes Focus is on helping your child become comfortable and safe in the water. Water movement and assisted floats are covered. Level two includes full-body submerging. Class size no more than 4 students.

Preschool 3 – 5 (Ages 3 – 5) $49.00/10 classes Focus is on floats, glides, rollovers, underwater swims, sit dive and glides, and developmental breaststroke. If the swimmers are ready we’ll even teach them to front crawl for up to 10 meters!

Class size: no more than 4 students.

Swim Kids 1 – 2 (Ages 6+) $50.00/10 classes This entry level provides an orientation to safety around the water and pool area. Floats and glides with kick are introduced. Children build their endurance using flutter kick with assisted glides.

Swim Kids 3 – 5 (Ages 6+) $46.00/10 classes These levels build the child’s skills in front and back crawl, diving, sculling, and whip kick. They are taught to be water safe by understanding their own limits and learning boating skills.

Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and dolphin kick, up to a 50-metre swim.

Swim Kids 6 – 7 $51.00/10 classes Front and back crawl continue to be refined. Elementary backstroke and whip kick on the front are introduced.

Ice safety, choking, and elementary rescue of others with throwing assists are taught. Endurance is built to a 150-metre swim.

Swim Kids 8 – 10 $52.00/10 classes Breastroke and scissor kick are introduced, and all strokes continue to be refined. Surface dives, rescues from ice, and rescue of others are taught. They learn about fitness and making wise choices. Endurance is built using dolphin kick, butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.

Water Safety Instructor Courses The Red Cross Instructor Development Program is comprised of two courses: Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI). These courses teach you the fundamentals of learning and teaching, communication, leadership, and skills and water safety. Completion of both of these courses will allow you to teach the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program.

CPR C Course

In this professional level CPR course, infant, child and adult CPR will be taught. Students will learn how to manage life-threatening emergencies.

AED training is included.

We are pleased to be offering a brand new aquatic facility with a 25m, 6 lane main pool, 1 metre diving board, hot tub, and dry sauna and a leisure pool containing many water features including a “lazy river”.

We are pleased to offer our own Parent and Tot and Preschool Program for those aged 6 months to 35 months, and the Red Cross Swim Program for those aged 6-12 years. Both programs were developed using research, are based on progressive teaching techniques, and age-appropriate learning. Private - $22.00/half hour Semi-Private - $18.00ea/half hour Bronze Medallion (Aqua Club 3) This level focuses on learning various lifesaving skills in preparation for challenging rescues that involve both conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Students will also develop stoke endurance, stroke efficiency and quick decision making skills.

You must be able to complete a timed swim of 500 meters (20 lengths) in 15 minutes to pass.

Bronze Cross (Aqua Club 4) This course challenges lifesavers with advanced training in lifesaving techniques and offers an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Students learn how to perform CPR, choking techniques for adults, children and infants. You must be able to complete a timed swim of 600 meters (24 lengths) in 18 minutes to pass.

Babysitting Course: You’re an adolescent of 11 years old or older and you’ve decided to become a babysitter; are you prepared for this important responsibility? For example, do you know how to:

Feed a baby or change a diaper?

Prepare a simple meal?

Play games with children of all ages?

Prevent injuries and keep children safe?

Handle an emergency if one happens?

A good babysitter knows all of these things and more. Learning them can be easy and fun with the Red Cross Babysitting Course. Take this course with the Leisure Recreation Group.

Cheam Leisure Centre AquaZumba!: Aqua Zumba program gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, the Aqua Zumba class blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief Shallow: This shallow water class is not only fun and effective, but also one of the safest workouts available. Water workouts mean fewer injuries because your body is assisted by the water. Water also provides twelve times greater resistance than air so you can count on a great training effect. Everyone welcome.

Deep Water: Using various flotation devices, aqua fitness in the deep water is an effective way to get a total body workout without the jarring impact of dry land classes. No experience is necessary, however the opportunity to work hard and have fun are endless!

Red Cross Swim Kids

10 Level program for ages 6 and up.

This program for school aged children will help swimmers develop all six swimming strokes (front & back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly, and sidestroke), actively learn how to be safe around water, and increase their fitness and endurance through fun activities.

Children will be challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which will be a strong motivator through all 10 levels.

How various accessories and techniques can help your photography. Learn about shutter speed, aperture, ISO and depth of field and different types of lenses and specialty filters. Students will also learn how to use a tripod, how to properly hold and stabilize a camera, and how to work with a flash and accessories. Information provided about local Camera clubs in the area and Internet web sites that will further your photography knowledge plus many other hints and tips you will find useful. Move for Health May 2012

Move for Health events, held in the first full week of May, include activities coordinated by a number of health, educational, recreational and community organizations. Activities hosted in 2011 had over 3000 people participate in events such as fun runs, a giant Zumba class, corporate challenges and a walk with Mayor and Council. Once completed the participants recorded their activity.

Our mission is to provide a location for students, their families and the wider community to be able to participate in activities in their own community, whilst providing a signpost to services available elsewhere.

Ongoing Programs

Mondays 7-8pm. Only $30 for 6 classes or drop-in available. This class is suitable for people 14 yrs. and up. If you didn’t already know…ZUMBA is the really popular Latin dance inspired fitness class. The instructor promises the steps are easy to follow. Wear running shoes and bring your own water. Next session starts Nov. 21st.

Baking Basics Kids in grades 3-6. Four classes for $45. (all supplies included) Thursdays Nov. 24th-Dec. 15th (except Dec. 1st class is on Dec. 2nd). These fun classes are for kids interested in learning how to bake and eat some of their own cupcakes and cookies. The last two weeks will be for baking and decorating our own small gingerbread houses. Forms available at the school office.

Heritage Park

Chilliwack Heritage Park is a 65 acre park that boasts a 150,000 square foot building which can accommodate a number of events. Trade Shows, Conventions, Concerts, Dog Shows, Horse Shows, Arena Cross Events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals, Kart Racing and local club events just to name a few.

There is a seven acre field for outdoor concerts and festivals as well as plenty of space for camping with your event.

There is also a 5/8 mile race track and rodeo arena as well as two outdoor sand arenas for your many different equestrian and agricultural events.

All arenas are equipped with outdoor lighting for those evening rentals.

Heritage Park, which has been operational since July 2001, is ideally and conveniently located just off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 116. This allows for easy access by those within Chilliwack as well as people living in the Lower mainland. The striking presence of this 150,000 square foot red building and 65 acre grounds also attracts travellers from all over Canada, as well as many visitors from the United States.

Heritage Park is a versatile facility. Features include a flexible public address system, 58

box office and show office. The building is comprised of four floors; two are concrete floors that measure approximately 35,000 square feet each.

There is also a 48,000 square foot dirt floor and a 30,000 square foot dirt floor.

We have 150 portable box stalls for your equestrian event that can be put up on either the concrete or dirt floors, depending on your requirements.

The building houses a portable stage, as well as tables and chairs. Our washroom facilities include showers and are handicapped accessible.

Tourism Chilliwack proudly operates Heritage Park with a management and staff who are committed to your satisfaction. We would be pleased to work with you to help make your event a success.
