People check out the Transit Future bus during a stop in Chilliwack at City Hall on Monday morning. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS
Transit Future rolls into Chilliwack Public invited to add their voice to transit planning Jennifer Feinberg The Progress What will it take to get people out of their cars and on the bus? Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz asked that question while aboard a tricked out BC Transit bus parked at city hall Monday morning for a media event. “We have heard loud and clear that people want to see some changes to our transit system,” Gaetz said. The interactive bus is actually a mobile public consultation tool, visiting Chilliwack and the Eastern Fraser Valley this
week to spark interest in the draft Transit Future with local, regional, and inter-regional service improvement ideas. “Now we hope everyone jumps on this opportunity to be heard,” said Gaetz. Two new routing options for the Chilliwack Transit System were mapped out on the bus, and people voted for their favourite with colourful dots, or on sticky notes when the bus was parked at the mall on the weekend. The feedback on sticky notes included a call for a “fast bus to the Sky Train,” while another wrote, “Don’t totally rule out
Rail for the Valley.” Some wanted earlier bus service on the weekends, while another simply asked for “good bus connections” to be added. “We set a goal to double ridership over the next 25 years, and that has set off work on this comprehensive transit plan,” explained BC Transit vice-president Mike Davis. Planning for Chilliwack focuses on faster service and a simpler route that goes to the new Walmart, but will also include regional connections to and from Agassiz, Harrison, Hope and the Central Fraser Valley.
“This plan supports our FVRD goals for cleaner and greener air,” said the mayor, who is also an FVRD director. “But the question remains, what will it take for you to get on the bus?” The Transit Future bus is in Agassiz on May 3 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Aberdeen Centre, and then it’s back in Chilliwack on May 4 at Evergreen Hall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Residents can shape the Future Transit plan by offering comments on paper, from the handy iPads provided on the bus, or from home by going to www.bctransit.com and clicking on ‘Transit Future.’

Cultus Lake Park Board is bouncing back from the brink of insolvency. But staff will no longer be producing monthly financial statements in an effort to cut costs. Park board commissioners voted April 13 to discontinue the practice. Cultus Lake Park leaseholder Rick Williamson, a retired accountant is unconvinced this was a good move. He wrote the park board a lengthy letter mapping out his concerns prior to the vote. “How can you possibly manage the affairs of the Park on a month-to-month basis if you have no idea what the current state of Park finances are? You will be running blind,” he wrote. According to the 2009 audited statements, CLPB lost $321,000 in 2009. Former Chair Brian Nokleby acknowledged in his year-end letter that the Park Board administration had experienced a number of challenges relating to both “accounting and cash handling” procedures. That still concerns some leaseholders. “Common sense dictates that any organization that is in such a precarious financial position should increase scrutiny of its finances – not eliminate this scrutiny entirely,” Williamson commented in the letter. Park Board chair Sacha Peter countered that there was nothing in place requiring the board to report financially to the public on a monthly basis, and it was too expensive to maintain the practice of providing “financial snapshots” at park board meetings. “In no way do I agree with the assertion that it will impair our ability to make budgetary decisions. It’s not as if we won’t receive information,” he said. The other concern was “a deluge” of Freedom of Information requests being filed in an effort to track the Park Board’s finances.

Jails a ‘Club Fed’ for prisoners: ex-prison nurse Robert Freeman The Progress It’s criminal what’s going on behind prison walls in Canada, says Lydia Saunders, a former prison nurse at Mountain Institution in Agassiz. “It’s a big Club Fed for men who commit crimes, with no consequences,” she said in an interview recently with The Progress. “We have had American prisoners who often state how great it is to be in prison in Canada ... it’s like a vacation,” she said. Meanwhile, prison staff are subjected to a daily barrage of physical intimidation, complaints and abuse from prisoners in which the scales of justice are tipped heavily in the inmates’ favour, she said. “Everything is about the inmates’ (rights),” she said. “It’s got nothing to do with making them better (citizens).” Saunders said she left Mountain prison after working there for more than three years - earning an employee of the month citation last February - because of the emotional stress of what she called unsafe working conditions. The last straw for Saunders came last November when she found herself alone with a convicted murderer “two inches from my face,” she said, who was then implicated in the death of his cellmate two days later. “What was this criminal with six life sentences doing in a mediumsecurity prison?” she asked. “And why was he in a lab without a (corrections) officer right there beside me?” A freedom of information request by The Progress asking why
inmate Michael Wayne McGray was transferred from the Kent maximum-security prison to the medium-security Mountain facility was denied by Corrections Canada for security reasons. No charges have been laid so far in the death last November of 33-year-old Jeremy Phillips, who was at Mountain serving a ninemonth sentence for aggravated assault. A corrections spokesman initially said an official had agreed to an interview limited to the health-
related aspects of Saunders’ allegations, but the interview never took place. The Progress decided to publish Saunders’ story because of the large number of correctional employees in this area, and because crime and punishment had become an election issue. Saunders spelled out her views in a long March 21 letter she sent to Warden Mark Kemball at Mountain prison, Commissioner Don Head at the Correctional Service of Canada, and to the lead-
ers of each political party. Gord Robertson, regional president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, said he could not comment officially on Saunders’ personal views. But he said there has been a “huge change” over the years in the type of inmates coming into prison. “The guys coming in are younger, who don’t have respect for anything,” he said. “It seems to be a change across the country.” But for staff to file a complaint
Lydia Saunders has collected pages of signatures on a petition asking for changes to make criminals more accountable for their actions, and to end their “Club Fed” treatment in prison. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS
and get something done about an abusive prisoner requires “a delicate juggling act,” he said, because of the rights bestowed upon prisoners. “They can get away with a lot, but we sure can’t,” he said. “The only right they don’t have is mobility.” Saunders said prisoners have a “huge sense of entitlement” to “kid-glove treatment” and are on the phone to their lawyer at the slightest provocation. “It’s just beyond ridiculous what goes on in our system, and nobody stands behind the staff,” she said. One prisoner couldn’t get the kind of shampoo he liked, Saunders claimed, “so he went and got his lawyer involved.” She said some inmates have simply quit halfway through a treatment program for hepatitis C, which cost $22,000 per treatment, and then are allowed to restart the program when they feel like it. “The inmates are handed everything free - (eye) glasses, dentists, every medication you can think of - and they don’t contribute one cent for any of this,” she said. Yet many law-abiding seniors can’t afford the medications they need or the groceries to sustain a healthy lifestyle, she said. “These guys, they just say the word and they get what they want,” she said. “Totally, crime pays.” Saunders finally left the corrections system behind, but she felt compelled to go public with her story, and to start a petition with an email address at canadianschangingjustice@mail.com “I’ve got to speak out, I’ve got to let people know what’s going on,” she said.
Metro Vancouver not killing off Half-naked man scares young girls Fraser sockeye, says report Black Press Despite a burgeoning Lower Mainland population and an ongoing development boom, researchers have found no evidence that localized pollution or habitat damage is a major factor in the decline of Fraser River sockeye salmon. In fact, they argue habitat along the lower Fraser and in the Strait of Georgia has improved over the past two decades, thanks to tightened industrial, development and discharge regulations. That’s the core finding
of a technical study commissioned by the Cohen Inquiry into the sockeye decline and led by Dr. Mark Johannes of Golder and Associates. Researchers looked at population – which rose 150 per cent over the 1990 to 2010 study period – as well as impacts from farming, forestry, industry, sewage discharges, shipping traffic and river dredging and diking. The heavier human footprint on southwestern B.C. through urbanization and other actions has not translated into more pollution in the receiving waters, they found.
“Contaminants in the Strait of Georgia show a general improvement over time, with decreases associated with effluent regulation and improved treatment in recent years,” the study report said, pointing to better treatment of sewage by Metro Vancouver before it’s released. Construction that disturbs fish habitat is also better regulated, it said, resulting in net habitat gains in the Fraser estuary due to the duty of developers to enhance or replace damaged areas. Juvenile sockeye swim through the lower river, its estuary and out into the
Salish Sea before heading deeper into the Pacific Ocean. During that transition period, they’re sensitive to changes in water properties and levels of food, competitors and predators. Migrating sockeye historically faced “moderate to severe” harm from human activities, the study noted. “But these impacts have not been generally observed during the last two decades and importantly, these impacts have not been observed to coincide with the decline of Fraser River sockeye.” Continued: SALMON/ p14
Robert Freeman The Progress
Police are still looking for half-naked, balding man who was reportedly masturbating and calling out to two young girls as they walked to school last Wednesday. The 9 a.m. incident took place near the train tracks in the McIntosh Drive area. The two girls ran for help from an adult they saw in the area. “The girls did the right thing by finding an adult and asking for their help,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said in a news release. “Any cases of this nature are an obvious concern to us,” she said, especially because it involves children. The suspect, described as a large, balding white man with a “slight” beard, was wearing a dark-blue hooded sweatshirt at the time with the word “NAVY” printed in yellow letters. Anyone with information is asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). rfreeman@theprogress.com

Henry Harter a school trustee, who once ran provincially for NDP. She did not break the family line. “We talk a lot about politics at home and discuss the different parties,” the 12-year-old said. “I liked how the Green Party candidate spoke to us and that he cared about the environment, but I didn’t want to vote for him because I wasn’t sure about everything else.” Central’s election increased voter turnout this year for two families at least. Following each candidate’s presentation, Tass went home and talked to his mom about all he had learned about the different parties. “And she started to get excited about all this stuff too and said that she was going to
start voting,” he said. For Grade 5 student Julie Pham, who is the reason Central got involved with Student Vote, the experience was more about finding the right candidate for her parents to vote for. “My mom doesn’t know English very much,” said Pham, whose parents immigrated from Vietnam. “Whenever a candidate said anything about pollution and homelessness, I took that home to my parents ... that’s important to us.” Teacher Christopher Lister hopes the experience will stick with the kids for years to come. “Right now, they get it,” he said. “Through this, I hope that when the time comes they will exercise their right to vote.” kbartel@theprogress.com

While they weren’t a factor at yesterday’s polling stations, they will be a factor in years to come. And if the Grade 5-6 classes at Central elementary had their way, the Green Party would be leading the country today. “They care about the environment a lot, and that’s something I feel very strongly about,” said Grade 6 student Kayla Bradshaw. “The root of every problem is connected to the environment and if we take care of it, we’ll have a better country.” Central elementary took part in Student Vote Canada, a parallel election, coinciding with the federal election, for students under the voting age. Over a two-week span, students were visited by all six Chilliwack candidates: DorothyJean O’Donnell, Marxist-Leninist Party; Gwen O’Mahony, New Democratic Party; Diane Janzen, Liberal Party; Mark Strahl, Conser vative Party; Jamie Hoskins, Green Party; and Clive Edwards, Western Block Party. On Friday, students went to the polls. Of 57 students voting, a majority of 41 checked off the Green Party. “I’m voting Green definitely,” said Grade 6 student Kane Tass, before ducking behind the ballot box. “Ever yone’s always talking about pollution
and global warming and I want to live awhile.” Tass believes the Green Party’s efforts will enable just that. Student Vote is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to increasing student interest in elections. Voter turnout in the 2008 federal election reached an all-time low with just 59 per cent of Canada voting. In several communities across the country, voter turnout was less than 50 per cent. Figures for yesterday’s election were not available at press deadline. Grade 6 student Linda Clarke-Harter couldn’t imagine not exercising her democratic right when she comes of age. Curious campaign move Politicians have the right to run their campaigns as they see fit. The measure of their success (or failure) is usually reflected in the number of votes they draw. Voting in the riding of ChilliwackFraser Canyon was still underway as The Progress went to press Monday. So we’ll have to wait to find out how the decision by Mark Strahl to forgo several all-candidate meetings affected his polling results. (That information is available now at www.theprogress.com, and in The Progress Daily.) However, it is fair to say his absence became a weapon wielded with increasing effectiveness by his opponents as the campaign dragged on. Granted, no candidate can be expected to be in all places at all times; schedules do not permit that in a riding as large as Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon. Nor can a candidate be blamed for avoiding a blatantly partisan crowd with a primary intent of sandbagging their own candidate’s opponent. That said, Strahl’s decision to attend only a handful of all-candidate meetings is curious. Particularly mystifying is his decision to avoid debates hosted by the
The Chilliwack
University of the Fraser Valley and Chilliwack Secondar y School. The debates came at a time when Elections Canada was trying to encourage young people to vote, arguing their voice did matter in the governing of this country. An empty chair is hardly an endorsement of that message. Asked why Strahl had missed those two events, campaign manager Matthew Barker said Strahl had “prior commitments.” Asked to elaborate, Barker declined. It’s an interesting strategy. Strahl was already battling suggestions – even from members of his own constituency association – that the snap nomination process was not fair. And, as a candidate hoping to establish his political credentials, his absence from the debates does little to demonstrate commitment and community engagement. Retiring MP Chuck Strahl helped build a political party by exposing the arrogance and sense of entitlement exhibited by the Progressive Conservatives under Brian Mulroney. It would be a shame if that lesson were lost on the next generation. Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress

New animal cruelty legislation holds out hope Following the news in February of the horrendous slaughter of sled dogs in Whistler last year, the Sled Dog Task Force released its report in April with a set of ten recommendations to regulate the standard of care for sled dogs, cer tification, inspection and auditing of sled dog operators in British Columbia, and better methods of communicating animal abuse. “British Columbians have said clearly that cruel or inhumane treatment of sled dogs or any other animal is simply not acceptable,” said Premier Christy Clark. “That’s why we are acting on all of the recommendations of the Sled Dog Task Force and sending a strong message that those who engage in that type of behaviour will be punished under tough new laws.” After a slump in business following last year’s Winter Olympics, an outdoor adventure

company ordered the cull of an excess number of dogs. One hundred were inhumanely shot and dumped in a mass grave last April. The slaughter came to light after an employee filed a successful compensation claim for post traumatic stress. Across the countr y, Canadians were horrified and there was internaMargaret tional outrage. The EVANS task force report acknowledged the overwhelming feedback the government got on this issue. The public mandate is clear. Animal cruelty is not tolerated. Dogs have a special relationship with millions of Canadians. They are beloved pets and companions. They are invaluable working animals in search and rescue, law enforcement, or on
farms and ranches. They are amazing therapy animals either as guide dogs for the blind and those with autism or those suffering serious illness or confined to a hospice. The province has begun the process of making changes to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act including increasing penalties of up to $75,000 and 24 months imprisonment for serious offenses, a huge improvement on the current $10,000 and six months limitation in jail. The province is improving mechanisms to report animal abuse and is encouraging the development of a self-sustaining sled dog industr y association under which the certification and auditing program will be established. Agencies and organizations that market or licence sled dog sporting events (tourism, consumer groups and race organizers) will be required members
of the association Veterinarians will be under a mandator y reporting requirement to report suspect animal abuse to the BC SPCA and they will receive statutory immunity for doing so. The new animal cruelty legislation will be the toughest in the country. The BC SPCA has received a $100,000 grant to enhance their ability to conduct cruelty investigations. Marcie Moriarty, general manager, cruelty investigations with BC SPCA said the society is extremely pleased with recommendation #7 that the province “enhance the capacity of the BC SPCA to undertake animal cruelty investigations.” There’s no arguing the society needs more funding and constables. They have just 26 constables for the entire province and all their annual funding comes from community and individual donations. Moriarty said that in

2010 a record 7,147 cruelty investigations were carried out but “there are so many more animals out there we don’t have the resources to reach.” The society provides shelter, veterinar y care and rehabilitation for close to 34,000 animals annually and their facilities, plus their foster homes, are full to overflowing with animals that owners can’t, or won’t, care for themselves. She expects that the cost for the sled dog investigation will be close to $200,000. The first phase is complete but the investigation team still plans to exhume the bodies of the animals as soon as the ground in Whistler has thawed. “I hope that lessons are learned so that this never happens again,” said Moriarety who acknowledged that this case has been especially upsetting.

Gaming centre decision needs revisiting other. For example, one does not have to look very far for examples of where a private gaming organization’s expansion was not thought to be in the best interest of the local community. On April 19, 2011, the city of Vancouver council led by Mayor Gregor Robertson voted unanimously against the proposal to open a new casino run by a private gaming company. The councillors agreed that the negative impacts of increased gambling addiction and crime simply outweighed the potential benefits of more revenue and jobs. On the political side of the equation, there’s a wide spectrum of groups from right to left opposing the expansion, joined by medical health officers and members of various police forces. Twenty former police officers from across Western Canada sent a letter to the city councillors asking them to say no to the proposed casino citing crime and loan sharking issues. Vancouver medical health officer John Carsley opposed to the large new facility in Vancouver. Citing his public health duties, Dr. Carsley said there is too much risk that the planned tripling of gaming opportunities by owners of the current casino will lead to an increase in problem gamblers. He indicated very clearly that “Problem gambling is clearly a public health issue.” He went on to state “There
is no certainty that it will cause an increase, and no certainty that it won’t,” he said. “But from a public health point of view, we prefer to advise caution. Even a small increase in problem gambling will affect a large number of people. It poses a potential risk.” Are the reasons that the City of Vancouver came up with in their debate and decision any less applicable to our city? The circumstances are very similar. The conditions of the original bingo association proposal are about to be radically changed with a new legal entity entering the picture and a review and new decision needs to be conducted and reached if the proposal to sell the Bingo Association goes through. If a private gaming group wants to open up in Chilliwack, they should do so by following the democratic process and come into our city through the front door in a transparent manner and this entails a review and a vote on the proposal by the City of Chilliwack’s elected officials and the public yet again. This issue is too important to our community to leave unaddressed, especially given the recent experience and findings of a neighbouring community. Mayor Gaetz, will you provide the necessary leadership on this with City Council and initiate a new public discussion and decision? Dale McGregor
Protest fails to further discussion I am writing this letter in regards to the antiabortion demonstration at Five Corners today (April 29th) around lunch time. This protest featured several images of aborted fetuses (and similar) in an extremely gory and, I felt, unnecessary display. I am not going to bother touching the hot topic behind the images, but I really must say that these photos were done in extremely bad taste. The images presented were exceedingly disturbing and upsetting, and I feel that it could have been handled much better. Think about it this way: If an image would cause a movie to be rated
R, what makes it okay to display in public in such a way? I understand the shock value. I understand that you need to pull people out of their complacence and make them seriously think about the issue. However pictures the size of a person displaying a dead child is not something I find even remotely appropriate to use. I am not the kind of person to avoid an issue because it is messy or controversial. I deliberately seek out causes I believe in, and do not shelter myself from the sad or scary images that accurately display these causes. However, the
images displayed hurt me very deeply and I spent several minutes of my lunch hour in tears before I returned to work and warned all of my coworkers to avoid that corner. Can you imagine if I was someone that had lost a child? Or someone with young kids in the car? Or a doctor or nurse that faces life and death every single day? How can you hold those images up knowing what kind of effect they would have on these people? Finally, I feel that the displays you used are very destructive to your own point. You say these children were murdered?
That they were lives to be cherished and loved? So what gives you the right to display their mangled bodies in such a thoughtless and insensitive way? I understand that you feel the need to effect change in the world, but your demonstration did not promote positive debate in my household, only tears and disappointment that you couldn't treat this with more delicacy. Please have a little more respect next time, and maybe think outside the box to find a way that gets people into a positive discussion of values instead. Margaret Johnston

It appears that the topic of a gaming centre is back on the table with the recent articles on the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation proposal to buy the Chilliwack Bingo Association and set up shop on Young Road where the bingo association was going to expand its operation. This was a hotly debated issue that went before Chilliwack city council and was narrowly approved in September, 2009 as an expansion for the local community groups under the premise of jobs and interpretation of that any revenues would be returned back to the city’s community groups. As an aside, the fact is the monies actually go to Victoria to the Gaming Corporation who decides which groups get what levels of monies. The proposal should be tabled and discussed by Chilliwack city council, again. The conditions of the originally approved expansion proposal have changed. The Chilliwack Bingo Association may no longer be involved and a private company is the proposed driving force of the gaming expansion. They should appear before council and the public to explain their proposal and how it may benefit the community and allow the community to examine the proposal for any negative affects on our community. And there may be a few. One gaming association is not necessarily the same as the

But (finance staff) are doing an incredible job of cleaning up and we’re working toward the next phase to optimize our revenues and cost savings.” The Community Charter only requires yearly audited financial statements, he said, and the 2009 audit cost $22,000. But Williamson said regular monthly statements had been prepared in a timely fashion for years up to early 2009. “What has changed since early 2009 that now make preparation so time consuming when it obviously was not an issue prior to 2009?” he asked. The 2009 situation necessitated the implementation of a “proactive cash flow management” strategy, said

Peter. Beginning in 2010, financial mechanisms to do with cash handling, revenue recognition and spending were beefed up, procedures were reviewed and made more efficient, he said. “The commitment by the Cultus Lake Park Board, and their management team, to provide for the long term financial health of the community was evident in the 2010 fiscal year end results,” said Peter. Revenues were up 11 per cent last year, while cost went down by 11
per cent. The 2009 deficit became a surplus of $447,105 in 2010, constituting a net change of $768,322. Park board reserves went from $22,079 in 2009 to $612,862 in 2010. “The Board is confident that we are on the right path toward long term financial sustainability,” said Peter. “We have made significant progress in laying a foundation for financial responsibility in the park and this will be to the benefit of our residents, businesses and visitors.”

Your Physio Fix with
Remmert W. Hinlopen, B. PT. Registered Physiotherapist
When should I get back into a sport routine after an ankle sprain? Over the years of practicing physiotherapy in Chilliwack I have seen my fair share of recurrent ankle injuries. It is the most common sports injury in the world. Too many times I see athletes return to their activities too early and reinjure the ankle. Later on I give you a few self help tests to see if you are ready to return to your competitive activity again. But first to all you kids out there, your parents are right, skate shoes are not proper athletic shoes to wear during sports and activity! Poor grip and too much space in the shoe equal not enough support. This is one of the main cause for rolling ankles!

Common ankle sprains can come in 3 grades: Grade 1 (mild): The ligament around the ankle is stretched but intact. Grade 2 (moderate): The ligament is partially torn. Grade 3 (severe): A complete tear of one of the ankle ligaments. When there is a 2nd or 3rd degree sprain, see your local physician or physiotherapist for medical assessment and to rule out the possibility of a fracture. Signs or symptoms of an ankle sprain: Varying degrees of pain may be present, however this may not reflect on the seriousness of the injury. An athlete who tears the ligament completely reports little pain because all the tissue is torn away. Most people will often report a “popping” sound at the time of the injury. Immediate swelling and discoloration is often a sign of more severe ligament sprains. Also, inability to walk on the injured leg. The first treatment after an ankle sprain: On the field, court, ice etc when the athlete is unwilling to move after a few minutes and you are not sure, leave the shoe on and other equipment in place in case of a suspecting fracture! Call 911 if needed. Next step will be to follow the P.R.I.C.E. principle: Protect- the area from further injury (wrap). Rest- to promote healing. Ice- for the first 48-72 hours to reduce the swelling. Compression- Ankle wrapped with a tensor or have the ankle taped by a trainer or physiotherapist. Elevationelevate the area to promote circulation to the heart. Heat versus Ice? Both are helpful in the healing your injury but in different ways. Ice slows down the blood flow to the area temporarily so pain and swelling will decrease. Use in the first 48-72 hours after the injury. Apply 10-15 minutes every 2 hours. Use a moist towel around the ice pack to prevent “ice burns”. Heat increases blood flow to the area so healthy blood can get there sooner. After 48-72 hours you can use heat and ice treatments (contrast bath). For example you put your ankle in a bucket with warm water for 1 minute and alternate with 1 minute in cold water. Going back and forth 4-5 times in each and hold it in for 30 seconds each time. This can be done 2 times a day. This technique helps flush stale inflammatory fluids from the area and bring in nutrient-rich fluids. Prevention: Evaluate the athletic shoes (turf shoes, runners, cleats). Do they need replacement? Oh yes, don’t forget to tie up your shoe laces well! I know that it isn’t always cool to tie them but you need the snug support. To make sharp turns you need your shoes to fit tight. With repeated ankle strains you may consider taping or an ankle brace during your sports activity. See your local physiotherapist or qualified trainer regarding proper taping. Rehabilitation: For the first 2/3 days use PRICE, and with moderate/severe ankle sprains please see your Physician or Physiotherapist for a proper evaluation and the right exercises. During the rehabilitation, the focus should be on regaining full movement in the ankle, and return the full strength of the lower leg/ankle muscles. The most important part, which is often forgotten, is to work on the balance of the injured leg and functional exercises (like running, going up stairs without the use of a railing, quick turns/jumps) before returning to sports. When do you know if you are ready to return to sports activity? Before returning to sports activities, try some of these next few activities and you look for difference in pain, movement and strength. Balance Test: Stand with hands across the chest and lift the injured leg. Balance on the uninjured leg first and then the injured and compare. Lateral Hop Test: Stand on uninjured leg and hop side ways 10 times back and forth. Now compare with the injured leg and see if there is a difference. Try running, with 45/90 degree turns, first at half speed then full speed. Next try backwards running, and running in figure eights in a 10 yard box. The rule of thumb is if you can practice twice at a 100% then you are ready to play in a game setting. If you are not able to play 100% at practice there is no sense to play in a game and take the risk of reinjuring the ankle. I hope this was helpful and hopefully this will give you the ability to get a full recovery. Any physiotherapist can guide you in getting the maximal results out of your rehabilitation and get you back to action as safe and as soon as possible.

Family and police are “extremely concerned” about the safety of a Chilliwack woman last seen on Saturday. Police said the 46-yearold woman left a note for her boyfriend saying she was going to babysit a friend’s c h i l d for the night, and she would be back on Sunday. “The boyfriend doesn’t know of such a friend, and she hasn’t returned home,” Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said. Police are asking for public help finding Darlene Steeves, or for the missing woman to call the Chilliwack RCMP herself. Steeves is described as a white woman, about 5’6” tall, weighing 130 lbs., with brown hair and brown eyes. She was driving a grey 2008 Dodge Ram pickup with BC licence plates DB 7828, which expired on April 9. Anyone with information can call RCMP at 604-792-4611.

Alien plants yanked at Island 22 FVRD hopes to raise awareness of damage caused by invasive species Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Some invasive plants were being pulled from Island 22 Regional Park last week thanks to a group of G.W. Graham students involved in Take Action Day. Several plant species are getting out of hand, and upsetting the delicate balance in FVRD Parks lately. So regional district staff has been working to identify and control the plants before they do more harm, said FVRD Parks technician Gord Gadsden. “Wetland ecosystems can be damaged by the proliferation of these invasive plants,” he explained. “We can’t be spraying pesticides at the park, so this work is really going to be beneficial.” Part of the problem is these alien species compete with local plant species for nutrients, land and water, and they have no natural predators. They can cause significant crop losses and economic hardship if unchecked. It was the school’s second time assisting FVRD Parks staff. “The kids also helped out last year and I think they enjoyed it,” said Gadsden. “They get their hands dirty but it’s a good educational opportunity.” At least one of the introduced species being removed last week at Island 22 Regional Park by G.W. Graham students could
understandably be confused with a harmless wildflower plant. Called False Lamium, it’s an aggressive ground cover plant with silver foliage, and bright, yellow flowers. It’s often tucked into planters and containers but occasionally ends up proliferating in parks because of thoughtless residents who illegally dump their clippings there. “These are ecosystem altering plants we’re talking about, and
they’re very frustrating to control.” Other plants are being targeted as well, such as Purple Loostrife, Scotch broom and Yellow Flag Iris — all of which can move in and take over. Others include English Ivy, or thorny Himalayan Blackberry, and even Giant Hogweed, which requires caution because it can cause severe burns. GWG teacher Jeanie Wilson said the Island 22 weed pulling activ-
ity was one of about 20 “service learning” options the students had to choose from on Take Action Day. “It is a great opportunity for our students who love the outdoors to volunteer their energy and time to make a concrete difference to our environment and our community,” she said. “A lot of teenagers are very environmentally concerned and want to use their energy in positive way.”

on habitat protection and control of discharges, the report said. Victoria still dumps raw sewage in the ocean although it is planning an upgrade and Metro Vancouver is planning costly upgrades to bring two of its plants with primary treatment up to the secondary level. But the repor t warned climate change and diminishing space near the river and its tributaries is making it more challenging to achieve habitat gains that can compensate for losses. The study is one of a series of 12 technical reports being prepared by the commission. Much evidence to date suggests enough sockeye are hatching in the upriver spawning beds, growing into smolts and then migrating successfully down to the ocean. If sockeye aren’t vanishing in the lower river and the immediate marine waters, the search for a culprit will likely shift further offshore.

Boosting science with plants and veggies Highroad Academy partners with Sardis secondary for the annual Mother’s Day plant and vegetable sale being held this weekend Katie Bartel The Progress
4-11T TS5
With layers of dirt crusting under her fingernails, 13-year-old Robyn Page was in her element. While other girls her age might turn their noses up at the mere sight of dirt, and are often more concerned with painting their nails, and chasing boys, than growing plants and vegetables, not Page. “The greens are really fun to be around,” she said, as she transplanted a lobellia tropical bedding plant into a larger pot. “When you’re all cooped up inside a classroom, it can get kind of boring. But out here, you’re more free, it’s hands on, and it’s cool to know each plant is a living organism and by helping it grow we’re helping build the environment.” Page is a Grade 7 student at Highroad Academy; one of approximately 15 other students from Grades 7 to 12 participating in the school’s horticulture club. On May 7, Highroad Academy is partnering with Sardis secondary for the school’s annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale. Sardis is taking care of the plants; Highroad the herbs and veggies. The horticulture club was started two years ago by science teachers John Munro and Michelle Johnsrude who wanted to increase student interest in science. Shortly after reading about Sardis secondary’s transformation of their horticulture and agriculture program through community partnerships, including a partnership with the University of the Fraser Valley, Munro wanted Highroad to have what Sardis had. But unlike Sardis, Highroad did not have access to a greenhouse. Tom Baumann, head of the agriculture department at UFV, offered Highroad the use of UFV’s greenhouses, as well as his and professor Brent Bailey’s expertise. “Our reasons [for helping] are quite obvious,” said Baumann. “We love what we do here, and we want to catch the kids early so they’ll love it and come into our program.” Every Monday, students in the club spend an hour and a half planting, fertilizing, weeding, watering, pruning, grafting, transplanting. Pretty much anything to do with greenhouse growing, they’re doing. And they’re doing it during their own time after school. Some kids may see it as work, but Grade 11 student Ina Van Eysinga said it was more like a hobby than work. “I don’t really feel like I’m giving up my free time,” she said. “I like how it’s really
freestyle learning, we’re not just following a set curriculum. And I like seeing new plants that I might not have ever seen like birds of paradise,” a tropical plant bearing a unique flower that resembles a colourful bird in flight. This year the students produced more than 200 plants, herbs and vegetables, including basil, thyme, cilantro, oregano, parsley, pomello, chives, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, purple fountain grass, sedum and more. “When we first started, I think some of the kids didn’t really believe that in eight to 12 weeks, these dried up, brown seeds would actually grow into something they could eat,” said Johnsrude. “But when they saw it growing and saw that they didn’t kill it, they were really excited.” Grade 10 student Kushal Khera was impressed with the “way better” taste of Highroad’s tomatoes versus store-bought tomatoes. “It was neat to see how the tastes were affected through the different growth mediums,” said Khera. “I think it’s really good to know where our food comes from.”

Community Harrison Festival Society presents
Developing future farmers Being in the greenhouse “is different from science class where all we’re doing is researching and reading, but never actually doing anything with that,” said Khera. “Here, we’re
actually doing stuff.” And it’s comments like these that get the teachers excited. Munro and Johnsrude dream of one day having a greenhouse of their own at Highroad Academy, as well as a full-credit agriculture
course in place. “I knew this was a good fit for our school,” said Munro. “It’s been a really good way of bolstering our science program.” “And how cool is it to have 13-year-olds excited about their
vegetables?” added Johnsrude. •The Mother’s Day Plant Sale is at the Sardis secondary greenhouse, located just outside the school, on May 7 from
7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Up for grabs are hanging baskets, planters, cedar wishing wells, a variety of annuals, herbs and vegetables – all student grown.
13th Annual
SPCA to host open house The Chilliwack Branch of the BC SPCA invites you to an animalthemed day of fun on Saturday, May 14. In addition to featuring pets looking for loving homes, activities at the Chilliwack SPCA Open House will include shelter tours, a bake sale, education displays, animal lover merchandise for sale
and much more. Their staff and volunteers will be available throughout the day to assist families who need help choosing a forever pet. In conjunction with the Open House on Hopedale Road, the branch will also be holding a massive garage sale on May 14 and 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 9828 Grigg Road in Chilliwack. Archives hopes to raise funds to furnish expanded facility The Progress With both arms extended, Paul Ferguson twirled around the expansive, new 4,000 square foot Chilliwack Archives addition. “Look at this wonderful open space, the curator exclaimed. On Friday afternoon, the room was empty, shelving had not yet been installed and the collection is still months away from being brought back into the Evergreen Hall facility, but you couldn’t really blame Ferguson for his excitement. Chilliwack Archives, a research and storage facility, has been over capacity for 10 years, squished into a 2,500 square foot space that was more like 1,500 square feet when you factored in the office, lunch room, and furniture. Several pieces in the collection had to be stored off-site because of limited space, and some artifacts had to be declined also because of limited space. Not anymore. Last July the City of Chilliwack committed to a 4,000 square foot addition, worth $430,000, that is set to be complete later this month.
But with the new addition, comes a whole new set of costs. Rolling shelving units, shelf-lining foam, map cabinets, pallet shelving, acid-free storage boxes, acid-free tissue, newspaper storage boxes, a new, digital microfilm reader are all on the expenses list. Chilliwack Museum
and Archives hopes to raise $250,000 for the facility; so far, $104,000 has been raised. “This is a magnificent jewel in our community that belongs to the people of Chilliwack, said Ferguson. “We’ve got 10,000 years of human history here, Chilliwack specific material. And the ongoing
fundraiser is all about preserving that material. In addition to the expansion, the existing space was also renovat-
ed, with walls taken out, to provide more office and research space for the community to seek out historical information and work on proj-
ects. “It’s going to make our collection easier to access, said Ferguson. For more information or to donate, contact

Organizers are calling the second annual Domestic Diva Night a success after raising more than $1,000 for the Ann Davis Transition Society downtown on Friday night. About 50 women showed up to be pampered and entertained at the Kim Mallor y Photography studio on Yale Road. “It was a very successful night, and we want to thank everyone involved,” said Michelle Cooper, coowner of Diva Boutique and one of the event hosts. Goddess Movement owner Ar yn Savard demonstrated some gravity-defying moves for the crowd, and the night’s honouree, Cherol Cunningham, shared some of her powerful life stor y about surviving abuse. Body painting, tarot readings and boutique shopping kept everyone amused. The preliminary estimate of $1,000 raised from the big night doesn’t include revenues from the silent auction or bar, Cooper said. “Cherol’s stor y reminded us why it’s important to support Ann Davis Transition Society,” she added. “We have chosen Ann Davis as our sole charity because of the great work they do to support entire families in Chilliwack, as well as women.”

Husker hopes high at spring camp Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Tis the time of year when hope springs eternal for junior football clubs. Everyone is 0-0 and bright days are ahead. So hearing Chilliwack Huskers head coach Luke Acheson talk enthusiastically about last weekend’s spring camp and the newest recruits was to be expected. But what Acheson said went beyond the usual optimism. Though his team is coming off a winless 2010 season, the second-year bench boss is resolute in his belief that better days are coming. “We had about 50 first-year players, so not a whole lot of experience,” Acheson said. “We’re not going to get all 50 of them back, but we do expect around 40, and that’s how you start building a winning team and winning program. We’re pretty encouraged about it.” The team drew 90 players to spring camp, bringing athletes from as far away as Ontario. Acheson spent the off-
season racking up the long-distance telephone charges, trying to get recruits in for a visit. What he saw didn’t disappoint. “We had one young man (Wyatt Hawke) come in from Burlington, Ontario and he looked great,” Acheson said. “He played some safety and halfback, and in our scrimmage he had an interception that he brought back for about 55 yards. He is very excited to come back.” Of the 90 that attended spring camp, Acheson knows several will opt for something else. So as much as this weekend was about getting players on the field to see what they can do, it was also about the organization trying to become a desired destination. “He (Hawke) loved the city and that was really great to hear because he’d be a great addition to our ball club,” Acheson said. “A big part of this weekend was about selling the program, showing these kids all the things I’ve been talking about on the phone for hours and hours and hours. We wanted to show them what the Huskers football family is all about.” Acheson did well

with his recruiting class last year, snagging several players who were on the radar of powerhouse programs like the Okanagan Sun and Vancouver Island Raiders. “We got guys in here that every other team wanted,” Acheson noted. “I think it was the family atmosphere and players wanting coach-
es that actually care about them. The rest of the country wanted these guys, and they chose us.” As first-year juniors, they struggled mightily on the field, going 0-10. But the jump in physical and mental maturity from year one to year two can be significant. “For most people, bringing a whole bunch
Cascades add Albertan ace
Dan Kinvig, Black Press As the University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team rolls out its list of recruits, head coach Barnaby Craddock says there’s one common denominator. “We want guys who know how to win,” the
Cascades bench boss said. “The biggest thing is, winning breeds winning, and we’re trying to recruit guys here who have had success.” Craddock’s two latest recruits – power forward Luke Braund and point guard Klaus Figueiredo – certainly meet that standard. Figueiredo helped the Alberta provincial U17 team to a national title in 2007, and won a 4A high school title with the Paul Kane Blues of St. Albert. He’s heading into his third year of eligibility, after playing two seasons of college ball for the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton.
Figueiredo fills a need at point guard for UFV, as veteran floor general Zeon Gray is planning to play professionally in Europe next season. “He had some interest from the Alberta Universities – Calgary and U of A – and he chose us,” Craddock said. “I think he’s going to be an impact type of kid.” Braund was a member of a B.C. AAA championship team with the St. George’s Saints of Vancouver in 2009. After redshirting with the Trinity Western Spartans in 2009-10, he planned to transfer to the University of Western Ontario before
changing his mind. “He decided to sit out this season,” Craddock explained. “He’s actually been studying at UFV since Christmas, taking classes and working. He sort of re-found his passion for basketball, and we’ve been talking to him for quite a while trying to get him to play here.” At 6’5”, Braund boasts a smooth shooting stroke from beyond the three-point line. Craddock’s previously announced recruits included Jordan Blackman, a guard out of Abbotsford’s Yale Secondary, and centre Mike James, a transfer from the University of Winnipeg.
of guys back from an 0-10 club might not sound great,” the coach acknowledged. “We were very talented but very young and our lack of experience showed. We progressed as the year went on and the key is to get as many of those guys back as possible and keep building on that base.” With spring camp
over, Acheson can take another deep breath before diving into training camp preparation. He’ll spend some time looking at film before getting back on the phone. “Some guys have already committed, which is great,” he said. “Other players maybe need to hear from us a bit more. We know
some of the areas we need to augment on the team, and we’ll be working hard going after some guys to fill those spots.” The team conducts throw-arounds for local players between now and the start of training camp on July 2. Get more Huskers info online at www.chilliwackhuskers.org.
Cricketers clip Surrey Stars Chilliwack’s brand new men’s cricket team won their first match of the 2011 B.C. Cricket League season, downing the Surrey Stars on Saturday in a second division matchup. Surrey batted first and were bowled out for 159 with Chilliwack’s Pinda Poonian taking five wickets. Chilliwack scored 164 for six with captain Scott Anderson scoring 61 and Roger Pressly smashing 33 not out to see the Stags home safely. The club hosts their women’s bar-
becue from 2-5 p.m. this Saturday at Meadowbrook Park. Burgers and hot dogs will be served as the club looks to establish the Fraser Valley’s only women’s team Anyone who is interested can grab a bite to eat, watch a men’s game and start learning. ✞ Obituaries BUSSEY Olga Margaret
Olga Margaret Bussey went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 2, 2011 at Chilliwack, BC BUSSEY at the age of 77 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Crystal-lee (Jack) and grandchildren, Craig and Cory. She was sadly predeceased by her husband Albert James Bussey. Olga was born in Montreal and in spite of a difficult childhood, was successful in everything she did. She became a faithful follower of Jesus Christ early in life. She was active in Trinity Pentecostal Church and enjoyed helping others. Olga and Albert were married for 57 years. One of their greatest adventures was moving to BC in 1981. She worked with mentally challenged individuals through the MCC and then opened her own group home “Summerhill House” in 1986 and ran it until 2010. Olga was a faithful wife, adoring mother and devoted grandmother. She was deeply loved by all her nieces and nephews. CLAMP Freda Joyce nee Clewer September 22, 1925 April 21, 2011 Born in Birmingham, England Mom was predeceased by our Dad, Eric. She is survived by CLAMP two siblings. Her legacy of love is her family: five children, ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was a British war bride and was very proud of her British heritage and the time she served in the British Women’s Land Army. She was also a loyal member of CFBCHS (our local military historic society.) ‘Nanny’ was a good, loving woman with a terrific sense of humour. We will all miss her laughter, her voice and the love she so willingly gave to us. A ‘British Tea’ was held by the family and we called it Mom’s Legacy of Love. Mom was a fascinating and unforgettable character. She had a million stories to tell but her main focus in life was always her family - she loved each and every one of us. We were so very fortunate to have such an amazing woman guiding us through life. I know she will be missed by her family and friends. I want each and every one of you to remember her with love in your hearts because that’s’ what she felt towards you - love. If you wish to make a donation in Mom’s name please make it to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. Goodbye Mom - you left behind one hell of a legacy!
