Editors’
Letter
Welcome to the January / February issue of Chiltern View Magazine. So, this is our first editor’s letter of 2020 and the start of not just a New Year, but a new decade! We do hope you had a lovely time celebrating over the Christmas period and, if you are now feeling the effects of a little over indulgence, then panic not, because a few simple steps will get you back on track again. Tanya has some great tips and a lovely winter recipe (page 72). We have a beautiful Snowdrop Walk, so you can get some fresh air and gentle exercise (page 74) and why not get back out in the garden with some helpful advice from Hartwell Nurseries (page 34).
It’s always a good idea to look after our furry friends as well. New Year is always a great time to re - evaluate their diet and exercise routine. Crossroads Vets have some useful information about diet for your pets (page 58), Sprinz and Nash tell you how to look out for possible health problems (page 83) and Kenzo has his own advice for his canine friends about trying to avoid these check-ups! He does know his ‘Hoomans’ are only making sure he keeps fit and healthy though (page 60). The festive season is not completely over, and you can still go along and see one of the local pantomimes – ‘Oh yes you can!’. Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, Wycombe Swan, Chinnor Players and Lane End Players all have performances in the coming weeks. Until next time,
Jan & Coralie

Book Review
New Year New Books From poetry to decorating, we’ve got a pretty mixed bag of books for you this month… A Year of Reading Aloud – Georgina Rodgers (editor) If you love poetry, try this collection of ‘52 poems to learn and love’, where you’ll find well-known names such as Sylvia Plath, E.E Cummings, William Blake and Maya Angelou alongside newer poets. Most of the poems are short enough to learn without too much difficulty, and they’re accompanied by a paragraph about the poet and the reason why the poem has been selected. Take up the challenge of learning one each week, or just dip in and out when you need an extra dose of beauty in your life. 365 Days of Creativity – Lorna Scobie As the blurb says, “Creativity is not just about making your mark on the paper. It’s about looking at the world a little differently.” If you’re stuck in a creative rut, this book might help you get out of it. The daily artistic challenges are split into how they help you feel, so you can choose one based on whether you want to feel calm, inspired, energetic or reflective. They range from drawing patterns on a snake to capturing the view through a doorway. Whether you take five minutes or five hours on each one is up to you. Grow Cook Eat Diary 2020 – Sarah Raven If you love gardening and cooking this could be the diary for you. Each month 8
has a short list of what to sow, plant and harvest in your garden, along with other garden-related tasks and a simple recipe using in-season produce. Dishes range from Cauliflower and Chickpea Curry to Beef Carpaccio with Fennel Flowers. As you’d expect, there are plenty of stunning flower photographs throughout the diary, with one image for each week. A Year of Living Thankfully – Lois Blyth Can being more grateful change your life? According to this book it can, and Lois Blyth is on a mission to show you how. Each week, you’ll work through an activity to help you embrace gratitude and take pleasure in the little things. There’s guidance on turning negative thoughts around, learning to appreciate what you have and not letting others spoil your mood. Farrow & Ball Recipes for Decorating – Joa Studholme Planning to redecorate this year? This book might help you come up with a plan. There are thirteen case studies, from city centre apartments to a classic Georgian house, as well as tips and tricks for decorating each room of your home. There’s also plenty of advice on decorating in general, including making small rooms look bigger and using colour to make an impact. Booker Prize Shortlist 2019 – Various Looking for a new fiction book to lose yourself in on a long winter’s night? Fancy trying something a bit different to your usual genre? Treat yourself to the six novels from the Booker Prize shortlist. Stories range from Chigozie Obioma’s An Orchestra of Minorities to Elif Shalak’s 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World. Read them all to see whether you agree with the judges’ final decision.

Chiltern Arts Festival Dame Evelyn Glennie, Danny Driver, the Marian Consort and a night of cabaret to look forward to at the Chiltern Arts Festival 2020 With Christmas done and dusted for another year, the music world is turning its mind to celebrating 250 years since Beethoven’s birth. Chiltern Arts joins the festivities with a programme celebrating overcoming adversity in the arts, with its usual array of venues across the Chilterns, including Henley-on-Thames, Marlow, Berkhamsted, Amersham, Great Missenden, Wallingford and Princes Risborough. Chiltern Arts offers music for all tastes, from brass chamber music to piano trios to cabaret to Renaissance choral music and everything in between. One of the highlights of the 2020 programme is undoubtedly a mini-residency from eminent solo percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. She is performing with jazz Trio HLK in Henley-on-Thames on 4th March; and with Matthew Wadsworth (lute) in a world premiere performance at the Candlelit Lute concert in Great Missenden on 5th March – definitely not one to miss. Chiltern Arts’ popular Concert and Dinner event returns to The Gatsby in Berkhamsted with members of the Piccadilly Dance Orchestra… Think ‘20s and 30s high society entertainment – grab a glass of fizz and enjoy turning back the clock in the perfect setting! More information online at chilternarts.com

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

The Dinton Hermit: pub, man, mystery The New Year comes in with some welcome news; the revival of a much-loved pub in the hamlet of Ford, in the parish of Dinton-with-Ford and Upton. The Dinton Hermit, which closed in 2013 and has been dormant ever since, has now been bought, redeveloped and reopened. The pub, based in a 17th century Grade II listed building, promises fresh modern British cuisine – and bed and breakfast accommodation will also be available in 2020, with the opening of eleven rooms with en suite facilities. The pub gets its unusual name from John Bigg (1629–96), a Dinton resident and clerk to Simon Mayne, magistrate, MP for Aylesbury and a previous owner of Dinton Hall. Mayne was one of the judges at the trial of King Charles I in 1649, and Bigg may have been one of the hooded executioners of the king. Following the restoration of Charles II in 1660, Mayne was tried and sentenced as a regicide and
died in the Tower of London the following year. Bigg became a hermit at about the same time, living in an underground cave at Dinton Hall until his death. Whether he chose a hermit’s life out of fear of retribution or remorse remains a mystery. Whatever the reason, he came to rely on the kindness of the local people who provided him with food, drink and leather scraps. Legend has it that he carried three bottles, two containing beer and the third milk. You can find evidence of the leather scraps in Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum, in the form of one of Bigg’s shoes (the other, apparently, is still at Dinton Hall). According to the Ashmolean, when one piece of leather wore out on the shoe, Bigg nailed another piece over the top. In any case, Bigg fared better than his late employer. Mayne’s ghost is reputed to haunt the hexagonal oddity that is Dinton Castle, built in 1769 by Sir John Vanhatten, who stored his fossil collection in the limestone walls. The Castle, which you can view from the road, and nearby Dinton Church, with its set of old stocks in the porch, are reminders of an eccentric and dangerous period in British history – when a man could be executioner and hermit in one lifetime.

Happy New Year, happy new garden? Now that December is firmly behind us and the New Year has begun, you might feel like giving your garden a makeover in time for the summer. Why not swap the usual New Year’s resolutions to get fit, lose weight and quit eating chocolate with a more enjoyable resolution by pledging to improve your garden. Resolution one: spend more time in the garden Commit to spend more time in the garden. The more time you commit to gardening, the more you will hone your skills and learn new things. During the winter your garden often gets neglected, so spending some more time each week will help you get that garden ready. Resolution two: try new plants and colours Changing a planting style or colour scheme can radically alter the appearance of a garden. We can all be guilty of becoming complacent and churning out the same plants year after year, simply because we know they’ll be successful. Variety is important to keep gardening interesting, and to grow and develop as a gardener.
Resolution three: compost Composting is a fantastic way to get rid of all the rotten foliage and vegetable scraps you have around, and compost is so full of nutrition that when sprinkled into your soil, your plants will flourish. Invest in a good quality composting bin this year and your garden will never look better. Resolution four: wildlife Your garden can be more than just a sanctuary for you to relax in, it can be a habitat for all kinds of wildlife. Whether you want to provide shelter for hedgehogs, hang bird feeders for local birds, or even install a pond and add some aquatic life, you can make your garden more enjoyable for the local wildlife. Whether your garden is new, different or long established as we enter 2020, make this the year that you make the most of your outdoor space. Knowing what you are aiming at is the first and key step to a happy new garden in 2020. Hellebores (pictured above) flower in winter to early spring and are small plants, easily missed at this time of year. So if you are planning to grow some (they’re well worth it!), be sure to plant them somewhere where they will be appreciated. With many varieties they add a vibrant colourful addition to a new or established garden. With Warm Wishes & A Happy New Year

What is doggy day care? a
The best way to think about a doggy day care is like a children’s nursery. Just like humans, it’s important dogs receive more than just exercise, they need mental stimulation, love and of course a social life!
e So what should com you look r for in day care?
Bruce’s Doggy Day Care was established over ten years ago, after founder Bruce set out on his mission to offer dogs more enriching lives through experiences.
care is fully licensed.
Bruce and the team recognise that each dog is an individual, their enrolment process ensures that they get to know your dog, taking time to understand what makes them tick. The world can be a very different place for large and small dogs and puppies, that’s why it’s important to create bespoke environments for each. Bruce’s has done exactly that. Pouncing Pooches field, with plenty of space for your dog to run around with their pals and Tiny Town for little paws to feel at home. The Nursery offers the perfect balance of play time and nap time for puppies to develop. The weekly enrichment themes make sure there is something for every dog to enjoy, whether that be agility, obstacle courses, swimming or simply cuddles with their favourite carer.

They can assist with hot meals or baby feeding, with home care equipment, even provide generator power if necessary. Message in a Bottle This is a scheme offered by the Lions charity in Oxfordshire. It helps emergency responders or staff to know that you use medication or have medical needs, should they have to assist you. It’s a simple scheme: the bottle contains your medical list and lives in your fridge, whilst the sticker goes on your door to alert emergency personnel. Be a good neighbour and promote the Message in a Bottle scheme to your friends who use medication. The Emergency Services will look for the GREEN CROSS SYMBOL and find the information in the bottle which is kept in the fridge.

Recipe
Clootie Dumpling This classic Scottish pudding is traditionally served on Burn’s Night. It’s similar to our Christmas pudding but with less dried fruit. It’s boiled in an old pillow case, piece of muslin or tea towel to give it a round shape but can be made in a pudding bowl. ‘Clootie’ means cloth, so if you make it in a pudding bowl it’s really a Dumpling not a Clootie Dumpling. Serve with custard. Ingredients •A little butter or sunflower oil for greasing •350g self raising flour •100g fresh, white breadcrumbs •125g vegetable suet •125g dark muscovado sugar •½ tsp salt •1 tsp mixed spice •1tsp ground ginger •2 tsp ground cinnamon •¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg •1 Bramley apple, peeled and grated •175g raisins •175g sultanas •2 tbsp black treacle •150ml milk •2 medium eggs How to make clootie dumpling… WASH YOUR HANDS 1. Wet your pillow case, muslin or tea towel, squeeze the excess water out and spread it on a clean worksurface. Cut two pieces of baking parchment the same size as the cloth or cloot and lay these in a ‘cross’ on top and lightly grease with a little butter or sunflower oil. Fill a very large pan of water up to 8cm from the top and put this on to boil. 2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, breadcrumbs, suet, sugar, salt and spices. Stir in the grated apple, raisins and sultanas. In a small bowl, mix together the treacle, milk and eggs. Stir the wet 56
ingredients into the dry ingredients. It should be quite a stiff mixture, stiffer than Christmas pudding or Victoria sponge mix. 3. Dust the baking parchment with flour, making sure to cover every part of the surface. Place the dough into the centre of the ‘cross’. Wet your hands and shape into a ‘round’ (if you don’t wet your hands it will stick to you). Draw up the paper and cloot. Tie it with string, wrapping the string around twice and tying it tightly, leave a little bit of spare room at the top of the cloot as the dumpling will expand a little but make sure it’s tied tightly. 4. Put an old saucer in the bottom of the pan and pop the dumpling into the pan of boiling water, cover with a tightly fitting lid. If your lid won’t fit use tin foil to cover the pan, crimping the foil around the edge of the pan so the steam can’t escape. Reduce the heat to a low simmer (or transfer to the bottom of the simmering oven of an AGA) and simmer for 4 hours. Test the dumpling is cooked by inserting a skewer into the centre, it should come out clean, if not, cook for longer. 5. Once cooked, remove from the pan, remove the cloot and parchment and transfer to a baking tray. Dry the dumpling in a preheated oven, 180c/gas 5/ AGA baking oven or roasting oven for 15-20 minutes. If there is a white skin over the dumpling don’t worry, it’s meant to look like this. Once it’s dried out in the oven this will become darker and form a nice crust on the outside of the dumpling. 6. Serve warm with custard or clotted cream. It’s also nice second day fried in butter and served with bacon. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Pet Health
New Year, new diet for your pet? By Fiona Mullan, RVN With Christmas now behind us, many of us will be coming up with New Year’s resolutions, such as joining the gym, going to exercise classes and eating more healthily to lose the extra Christmas inches. With an estimated 50% of UK pets now overweight, the new year is a perfect time to include your pet in your new healthier lifestyle. Tips For Healthier Pets ‘Know the score’! (Body condition score) Body condition scoring is the way your vet will assess your pet’s weight and shape and whether or not they need to lose weight. A common score is a scale of 1-5 (1 being emaciated, 2 underweight, 3 being ideal, 4 overweight and 5 being obese). An ideal score means you should be able to feel your pet’s ribs under a minimal layer of fat cover, but not able to see them. They should have a visible waistline when viewed from above, and an obvious abdominal tuck underneath. If you aren’t sure what your pet’s ideal weight should be, make a free weight check appointment at your veterinary practice. Weigh their food accurately A ‘handful’ or ‘bowlful’ is not an accurate way of measuring your pet’s daily intake, and it’s far more likely that they will be overfed as a result. Check the feeding guidelines on the bag to work out what their total DAILY requirement is
58
and use scales to measure out. The daily requirement is the total amount they need in a 24-hour period, so if they are getting treats, scraps from the table, this is all EXTRA calories they do not need! Again, if unsure, speak to your vet who will guide you on quantities. Get them out and about! It may seem obvious, but a lot of pets do not get the exercise that they require. For the majority of dogs a quick ‘stroll around the block’ is not adequate, and they will not burn off what they are taking in. Including your dog in your own work out, will make exercise more enjoyable for both of you & increase bonding. Some cats love to engage in play, and chasing laser pens and string toys can be a great way of getting them moving. Rabbits and cats are more tricky to exercise, but not impossible! Rabbits and smaller pets should have access to a large run enclosure where they can hop around freely. Try making their enclosure more exciting with different levels which they can climb up and down, and tunnels for them to run through.

Kenzo’s Diaries 6 - A dog’s life I woke up today on a cold, miserable morning needing to go for ‘wee wees’ and due to the time being slightly past 5am, I decided the ‘hoomans’ have had enough sleep and should now be awoken by my woofer. Daddy came down the stairs slowly and silently, seeming very drowsy and droopy. I grabbed my favourite blanket and walked daddy to the back door so he could release me into MY garden. After parading and inspecting my territory for a while I returned to grace the ‘hoomans’ with my presence and to my surprise they were all on my side of the horrible wall they call the ‘stare grate’. Mummy grabbed my ‘Arness’ and my walking rope and got me ready for walkies! I knew Christmas was coming, but I didn’t think it was this soon! Early walkies with my entire pack; me of course the Alpha. I jumped up into the ‘caw’ and away we went. The whole way there I was wondering if I was going into the trees, onto the beach, or even to meet one of my ‘fwends’. The ‘caw’ kept going further and further from my house and I was starting to get ‘confuzed’… but then the bone dropped … all the trees and buildings we passed were becoming very familiar. I knew where we were going, and my tail dropped. As we pulled into the ‘caw park’ my worst fears became a reality; the ‘hoomans’ had taken me to the puppy doctors. Firstly, I refused to jump out of the ‘bowt’, but the ‘hoomans’ were prepared for this; they had bought ‘chickinn’ and dragged me with my walking rope. Secondly, I tried digging my paws into the ground, but again this was of no use as the ‘hoomans’ forcefully lifted me into their arms and carried me in against my will.
60
Hours in puppy time passed, which to the ‘hoomans’ was about 15 minutes, until the puppy doctor called my name. “Kenzo...?” the man said softly. As I walked in the man gave me pats and rubs on my head and tummy, I thought to myself that it may not be as bad as I remember. Until… The ‘hooman’ brought out a big long spikey stick he called ‘a needow’ and he stuck it in the back of my neck rolls. As I went to turn around and ‘grr’ the man took it out and said “Done!” And that was it, the ‘hoomans’ took me back to the ‘caw’. They fooled me this time, but never, EVER again!

Health
How does the cold affect our muscles and joints? The winter chill is often associated with an increase in aches and pains for many people, particularly in the joints, but also in the muscles. Folklore suggests the cold makes pain worse - but there is actually little research into the weather’s effects. Recent innovative research called, ‘Cloudy’ has shown that; damp and windy days with low pressure increased the chances of experiencing more pain than normal by about 20%. Cold, damp days also made pain worse. Conflictingly, there was no association with temperature alone, or rainfall. The results are somewhat inconclusive because they vary greatly. This is largely because pain is subjective and it’s difficult to isolate a particular cause. How we can
62
prevent aches in winter There are some things that can help reduce pain during the colder months. Exercise also helps to improve metabolism and blood flow through muscles and joints, which can reduce inflammation, stiffness and pain. Many people tend to be more active in the warmer months when the weather is pleasant and it’s comfortable to be outside. It’s important to continue exercise into winter as a reduction in physical activity in winter for more than two weeks results in loss of muscle strength and mass as well as reduced bone density. This is particularly important for older individuals. You can get enough stimulation for maintenance of muscle and bone strength through daily tasks and gentle home workouts. Best wishes, David

Choking Claire Dewitt, from CMD First Aid Training, gives her advice on how to help someone who is choking. If you ever find yourself with an adult or child over the age of 1 who is choking, the first thing to do is to encourage them to cough. If this doesn’t help, you will need to act fast. What follows is a very effective treatment if delivered quickly and confidently: Lean them forward then swiftly give 5 firm back blows between their shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. You can lay younger children across your lap face down to do this. Stand behind them and place your fist on their abdomen slightly above their belly button. Bring your other hand around
them placing it on top of your fist. Pull in and upward sharply, up to 5 times if necessary. You may need to kneel behind a child to do this. Repeat this cycle up to three times. If the obstruction still hasn’t cleared call 999 immediately and be prepared to start CPR. In any case, it is advisable for the person you have treated for choking to be checked over by a medical professional.

What’s on Thame
Stand Aside, Standby. You aren’t needed. Comedian Michael McIntyre made fun of us all by pointing out that we often shut down appliances before going on holiday for safety reasons. Except the fridge because “we trust the fridge”. He has a point on the safety aspect, but we should also be considering the environmental one, and not just when we are on holiday. Leaving your devices on standby means you are spending good money warming the planet. Whilst switching a fridge off doesn’t make sense, here are a few things that do: According to MoneySuperMarket, the biggest standby power users are TVs, TV boxes (e.g. Sky/Virgin) and multiroom speakers. Chances are you only actually use them evening and weekends so waiting 60 seconds for them to restart isn’t much of a sacrifice. When you unplug your mobile phone after charging it, the charger is still using tiny amounts. When you multiply that by the number of people in the house, it’s not so tiny. So switch it off at the wall when you aren’t using it. Your router is something you want to have available pretty much all the time. But if you are going on two weeks holiday, a little holiday of its own won’t hurt. It’s quicker to put your PC on standby than to shut it down, but we are only saving seconds here. And we all know that it sometimes your PC wakes up, all by itself. There’s a device not to be trusted! 68

Midsomer Tours Achieve Best Result Yet for Thame Good Causes! Thame’s Midsomer Walking Tours have had their best season yet with over 500 people taking the Midsomer tour of Thame during 2019. Many of the proceeds from ticket sales are donated to good causes in Thame, and this year £2,100 was shared between the Mayor’s Chosen Charity, Lord Williams’s School Young Carers, and Thame Museum, a registered charity. Thame Museum volunteers received a cheque for £1050 towards the upkeep and maintenance of the museum building and its collections in a presentation made on Wednesday 20th November. yet to good causes in Thame - 30% higher than in 2018. Altogether, we have raised over £4,000 for good causes in Thame since the tours started in May 2017. We believe the tours also help develop tourism and contribute to the local economy, attracting visitors to the historic town of Thame’. Tony continued, ‘We hope to continue this upward trend, with even more people taking the tour in 2020’.
The Mayor of Thame, Ann Midwinter, also received a cheque for £1050 for her Chosen Charity, Lord Williams’s School Young Carers, in a presentation made on Wednesday 27th November. Tony Long of Thame Midsomer Tours said, ‘We are delighted that the Midsomer Tours continue to be so popular, this year with even more people taking part than ever. As a result, we have been able to donate the highest amount 76
The tours, each led by one of nine trained volunteers, cover 22 Midsomer Murders filming locations in Thame, as well as historical snippets about the town. Tickets are £7.50 each but the tour guides themselves receive no recompense, preferring to donate most of the ticket income to good causes, with a residue held back to help fund promotional activity.

Windows 7 Comes To An End Still Using Windows 7? Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. As of January 14th 2020, Microsoft is no longer providing updates and security patches for Windows 7. What Does the Windows 7 End of Life Mean? When Microsoft ends its support of Windows 7, it means the cessation of all support, paid and unpaid, for the operating system. Up to January 14th 2020, the company offered “extended support,” meaning paid support only. It no longer offered complimentary support that may have been included in software license or licensing programs but it did continue to provide security updates but no new design or feature improvements. Can I Use Windows 7 After Microsoft Ends Support? You can certainly continue to use Windows 7 after Microsoft stops its support, however, you do so at considerable risk. One of the most important parts of managing your operating system is to ensure that it is protected from viruses, malware and other nasty infections that can derail your technology. Hackers know that Windows 7 is ending and will be looking to exploit the lack of updates and attack computer systems still using the operating system. What Other Impacts Are There to Stopping Support? When Microsoft stops supporting an operating system, it’s a signal to other software developers and hardware companies to stop providing upgrades and updates to their products on the Windows 7 operating system too. Whilst that support may linger beyond the January 2020 date, it’s likely to end at some point. In addition, newer hardware components and peripherals are likely to stop working on your computers and devices still using Windows 7. This may create serious compatibility issues with other programs or tools you use. How Can I Address the Windows 7 End of Life? The best thing you can do is upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as possible. Here at PChelp4U, we can make this process easy and hassle free for you. If you call us on the below numbers or email us at support@pc-help-4u.co.uk, we will be more than glad to help. We will come out to you, assess your computer, decide on whether an upgrade to Windows 10 or a new computer is the most cost effective long-term solution for you, and deal with all the work for you without you having to leave the comfort of your armchair. If a new computer, be it a laptop of desktop, is decided upon, we supply the whole range with full manufacturer warranties. We will also pick your old computer up, transfer all your data and settings across to the new Windows 10 computer in the workshop, bring it back to your home, install and configure it and run through everything with you to ensure you're happy. All this is included within the fixed price that we give you.

Valentine’s Day Why do we exchange cards, flowers and gifts with our loved ones on 14th February when the day’s patron saint was a Christian martyr? The origins of St Valentine’s Day are said to have begun as early as the third century and were possibly influenced by the Roman fertility feast of Lupercalia held on 15th February, whose themes and rituals were centred around coupling and new birth. No one is entirely sure who St Valentine was. Valentine or Valentinus was a popular name in Rome and there are at least three Catholic saints known as Valentine who have been venerated over the centuries. Any one of them could have had the Feast of St Valentine named after him when Pope Gelasius turned Lupercalia into a Christian festival in 496 AD. One theory is that St Valentine was a Christian priest in the third century who defied Emperor Claudius II’s edict that no Roman soldiers could marry by performing secret wedding ceremonies for young lovers until he was captured, beheaded (allegedly on 14th February) and buried under a Roman road. It is also thought that St Valentine’s Day may have been merged with a Norman celebration that took place around the same time known as Galatin’s Day, meaning ‘a gallant’ or lover. The link between Valentine’s Day and romance was solidified in the late 1300s with Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem Parliament of Foules (Fowls), said to have been written in honour of King Richard II’s betrothal to Anne of Bohemia. It contains the lines: “…For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.” (For this was on St Valentine’s Day when every bird comes there to choose his mate.) 88
Royalty took the notion on board, and by the 1400s it had become traditional for noblemen to write romantic poems to their love interest or ‘Valentine’. The oldest known Valentine still in existence is a poem entitled Farewell to Love written in French by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following capture at the Battle of Agincourt. St Valentine’s Day was clearly established as a day for lovers by 1600 when Shakespeare referred to it in Hamlet during a speech by Ophelia. By the eighteenth century, handmade Valentine’s cards had become popular and were very elaborate with flowers, ribbons and lace. They would often feature Cupid (whose name means ‘desire’), the mischievous winged son of Venus, Roman goddess of love. He also appeared in much romantic verse as the bringer of often unrequited love – hence a missive was necessary to let the object of your desire know of your affections! With their sentimental notion of romance and the language of flowers, the Victorians elevated Valentine’s Day to the popular celebration it has become today. In 1858, The London Journal wrote of St Valentine’s Day that it was both “natural and proper that at the start of spring the predominating sentiment in the human mind should be the sentiment of love; and to this accordingly the anniversary of our saint is directed”. Established in 1985, the confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC) is the premier roofing trades association in the UK. The members are considered to be the best roofing contractors in the business. If you require a roof repair or even a completely new roof, the recommended roofers and roofing companies are here to you. All new works can carry a fully insured 10-20 year back up guarantee (subject to payment). This protects the customer should their chosen roofing contractor decide to cease trading for any reason during the guarantee period. All members are totally commited to providing clients with a quality driven service that reflects good craft skills, ethical working practices and fair prices.
