Welcome to the March / April issue of Chiltern View Magazine. We do hope that, by the time you are all reading this, Spring will have sprung! We thought we would celebrate the start of longer, warmer days with this wonderful cover. The picture was taken by Agi of her beautiful daughter Annabel playing in the bluebells. Agi has her own photography business and takes fantastic photos, so have a look at her advert on page 26 and treat yourselves to a photoshoot. We enjoy publishing a magazine with a variety of content and hope we will have something for everybody. We include many community organisations and local events and these are also available on our website at www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk.

We also provide an invaluable service for local companies to promote their businesses. Supporting all local business helps to keep more people in work and it can provide a much more individual and caring experience for both you and the local company. It’s also nice to know that they aren’t far away and that they are probably doing work for other people locally, which creates a deal based on trust. We get some excellent feedback from our customers which shows that paper advertising really works. This testimonial was written by Jo Barlow who runs Jo’s Gardening Services, “The response to my ad has been great and as a result I don’t need to advertise again in the next edition. In fact, if I keep all my customers this year, then I won’t be looking to advertise again until the next Jan/Feb edition. Thanks for contacting me though and thanks for being a great platform to advertise in!” Thanks Jo, we are really glad we have helped! Until next time,

Jan & Coralie

Climate: We CAN make a difference - together Everyone, everywhere, is waking up to the reality of the climate crisis – and not a moment too soon. Right now we can accelerate tipping points or, in the nick of time, create a more sustainable world. Which path should we choose? Surely that’s a no-brainer! And yet, how to begin? This afternoon, my 14 year old granddaughter asked me the perennial question: ‘But what can I do?‘

respectfully to one another and creating spaces where others too can share knowledge, insights and experiences.

The simple reality is that none of us can create this new world alone: we can only do it in community, with kindred spirits. So perhaps a prior question to ask is, ‘Who can I face this crisis with?’ And then, ‘Where can I learn what will make a difference?’

Like the Zero Carbon Café (Risborough Community Centre, 7.30-9.30pm every second Thursday of the month), where people drop in to discover more ways to create a future for our children and grandchildren - ways that are compassionate both to ourselves and to all life on Earth.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue My name is Sam; I’m a Border Collie Type and about 3 years old. I found myself in the care of Stokenchurch Dog Rescue via the pound as an unclaimed stray. I have settled in well since my arrival and I’m always pleased to see my handlers. I love playing with toys and I’m motivated by them, so alongside treats, toys can be used as a reward for my good behaviour when training me. I have had some previous training and I currently know ‘sit’ and ‘down’. Being the intelligent Collie that I am, it’s important that I am encouraged to use my brain and be kept mentally stimulated. I would enjoy further training and will pick up new commands/tricks very quickly and this would also build a bond between me and my new owner. I am very active and looking for a home with people who are experienced with the breed and can get the best out of me, as I have a lot of potential. 18

• Tree Shaping, Felling & Pruning • All Hedge work • Brick Walls • Turfing • Fencing • Patios & Pressure Cleaning We cover Oxon & Bucks

Once I’ve had some basic training, I would enjoy doing extra activities such as agility, flyball, hoopers, canicross/bikejor or even scent work. I walk surprisingly well on the lead and will follow your direction. I don’t pull if there is something of interest and I remain calm when being gently restrained and when having my harness put on. I am not a fan of other dogs and will be looking for a home where there are no other dogs. I may benefit from some reactive classes once I have settled into my new home. In a Collie experienced home, Sam will make a fabulous addition. Can you offer this lovely young boy a loving and permanent new home? www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695 To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

We are delighted to introduce the world’s first rechargeable hearing aid to provide both superior sound quality with integrated sensors and artificial intelligence to track your body and brain health. One unique feature is that it can accurately detect if you’ve fallen and will send an alert to selected contacts, such as a trusted friend or loved one. Starkey Livio AI is a multi-purpose device that redefines what a hearing aid can do. TM

Samantha Godkin is a Senior Audiologist at the Hearing First clinic at Stokenchurch Medical Centre, and the new clinic at the Belmore Centre in Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury. When we spoke to her about this incredible new hearing aid technology she said, “I have been dispensing hearing aids for over 25 years and I marvel at the speed hearing aid technology is still advancing. Even 10 years ago, I didn’t think this would be possible, changing lives for the better and allowing individuals to live life to the full. This new technology does all that, but it goes the extra mile and can provide peace of mind should you fall. I feel that knowing that the fall alert will contact a loved one or trusted friend should a fall happen, will allow people to feel more confident both at home and when they are out and about, which is fundamentally going to change that person’s independence for the better. Simply put, Livio AI lets people of all ages take a proactive approach to their overall wellness.” If you would like to contact us for an appointment or full hearing assessment and demonstration of new Starkey Livio AI products, contact us FREE today on 0800 133 7717 and stay connected with the people and things you love most.

Chicken and rice burritos Make these quick and easy wraps for onthe-go lunch or supper. Wrap tightly in foil to transport. Makes 4 Ready in 30 minutes 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 100g easy-cook long grain rice, boiled, drained and cooled (see tip) 2 tsp chilli powder 350g chicken breast fillet, thinly sliced Half a red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced Half a green pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced 4 large flour tortillas 4 tbsp tomato salsa Lime wedges, to serve 1 Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened. Add the rice and chilli powder and stir-fry over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes. 38

2 Meanwhile, heat a cast-iron griddle pan over a high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes, turning once until the chicken is seared and cook through. Add the peppers to the pan after 2 minutes and cook till soft. 3 Cut the cooked chicken into thin strips and stir into the rice mixture with the peppers. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3 Warm the tortillas as directed on the packaging. Place a tortilla on a chopping board and spread with 1 tbsp of the salsa. Top with a quarter of the chicken and rice mixture. 4 Fold in the sides towards the centre then roll up tightly to completely enclose the filling. Banish limescale and protect your home More than 13 million households in the UK have hard water that causes limescale. Households in the Buckinghamshire and East Oxford area are sadly no exception. According to Thames Water, your water quality is deemed ‘hard to very hard’ but did you also know that limescale can result in an untold amount of damage to your home – damage you can and can’t see. An average family of four will actually generate around 70kg of scale, and that’s in just 1 year! Having soft water running through your home will affect more of your life than arguably any other household product. Softened water will bring you and your family many benefits in day to day life: Save time cleaning Save hours cleaning and discover the only long-term solution for limescale, installing a water softener. Soft water will lovingly care for your kitchen and bathroom giving you sparkling taps, free-flowing showers and smudge-free worktops. Help local vulnerable people stay warm We often think of Christmas as the cold time of year. It can be so comforting to get out of the cold and snuggle up in your warm home during the festive season. In recent years, however, the lowest temperatures and the greatest snowfall in Buckinghamshire have been seen in the New Year between January and March. With low temperatures and frost already setting in, vulnerable people across Buckinghamshire are struggling to keep warm.

So, what can you do to help local, vulnerable people fighting to keep out the cold? Every year, thousands of eligible individuals are paid a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’ by the government. You will have received this payment this year if you were born on or before 5th April 1954 and if you receive a State Pension or another social security benefit as detailed on the gov.uk website.

With the cost of energy bills steadily rising, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy have projected that over 10% of UK households will be living in fuel poverty this winter. For many, putting on the heating is a luxury they cannot afford. A household is considered to be ‘fuel poor’, and its inhabitants living in fuel poverty, if it has higher than typical energy costs and would be left with a disposable income below the poverty line if it spent the required money to meet those costs.

52

The Heart of Bucks Winter Warmth campaign is encouraging people who receive this payment and are able to pay their heating bills to donate it to those who find the winter months particularly challenging. The people who would benefit from your donation include older people, lone parents with children under the age of five and households requiring additional heating because of a household member with a disability. The holistic support we offer sees the donated money going towards heating bills, warm winter clothing and items to keep warm in the home, including duvets and kettles. Even a portion of your Winter Fuel Payment would be gratefully received by those in need. If you are able to help, you can donate online at www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/winterwarmth or send a cheque made payable to ‘Heart of Bucks’ to: Heart of Bucks Winter Warmth, Sunley House (4th floor), Oxford Road, Aylesbury, Bucks, HP19 8FQ

Lent Shrove Tuesday is synonymous with pancake eating and the start of LENT in the Christian calendar. At the end of LENT everyone looks forward to celebrating Easter and being able to enjoy some tasty treats. Below is a recipe you might enjoy.... (Easter Biscuits). If you prefer the recipe not to be gluten free and dairy free you can modify it - i.e. instead of dairy free margarine just use regular margarine. After Easter and with a change of season, it is the perfect time to get back to a healthy diet (most of the time). It is also the perfect opportunity to get your house in order - cleaning, de-cluttering and sorting out the kitchen cupboards. Here are some easy tips to help you... 1. Throw away out of date foods - remember to wash and recycle the packaging 2. Fill the cupboards with nutritious convenience foods to ensure healthy food choices on busy days • tinned tomatoes/passata • tinned beans - butter beans, kidney beans, mixed beans, baked beans

Spiced Easter Biscuits Wheat free, Gluten free, Dairy free, Soya free, Egg free, Nut free. Ingredients 110g/4oz dairy free soya free margarine 110g/4oz soft light brown sugar 1 ½ tsp baking powder ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp vanilla essence 110g/4oz wheat free flour 75g/30z millet flakes, quinoa flakes or gluten free oats 150g/6oz raisins Grated zest of one orange ½ teaspoon cinnamon 1/8th teaspoon mixed spice 56

• tinned fish • wholemeal pasta and rice • quinoa, millet, pearl barley and oats • dried red lentils • tinned sweetcorn • tinned tuna, salmon, mackerel and other fish 3. Fill the freezer with nutritious ingredients that can be easily added to soups, stews and casseroles or eaten as part of a meal • frozen smoothie mixes • frozen vegetables • frozen fish • dried and frozen herbs 4. Set aside 10 minutes a day for a week to get started Tanya Wright HCPC Specialist Dietitian | NHS and Private Practice www.tzlaces.com Method 1. Preheat oven to 190c 2. Cream together dairy free margarine and sugar 3. Add vanilla essence, raisins and millet/quinoa/oats 4. Add baking powder, bicarb and flour, zest and spices, and mix to form a dough ball 5. Split dough into 20 walnut sized balls 6. Place on greased baking tray and press into flat discs 7. Bake for 8 - 12 minutes until golden but still soft to touch 8. How to create a Bird Friendly Garden It is quite simple to create a bird friendly garden. Attracting birds into our garden is both hugely enjoyable and rewarding. We can help you create a garden that will be attractive to birds all year round, from choosing the right plants, to putting out quality food. Natural food sources Natural foods are always a treat for birds. Any shrub or tree that produces berries is an excellent choice. Red fruits seem to be a favourite. Sunflowers and many species of wildflower are also a great option. Starlings love to feed on grubs in the lawn and thrushes enjoy a fruity mix on the ground - leftover windfall or damaged apples are ideal. Robins love mealworms, either on the ground or on a table. Don’t forget to share your scraps! Leftover cooked rice, cooked or uncooked pastry, cold cooked potato and mild grated cheese will all be enjoyed, and are better in the birds than in the bin!

Quality feed It is also important to providing supplementary feeding spots. Hanging bird feeders in your garden is an excellent way to feed seeds, sunflower hearts, peanuts and specialist seed mixes to the more agile birds such as Blue Tits, Greenfinches and House Sparrows. Offer bug nibbles for long-tailed tits. 58

Shelter Provide a safe and snug shelter where your birds can roost and nest. Nesting boxes are popular with Sparrows, Great tits, Blue tits and Robins. Make sure they are positioned somewhere quiet and hidden away where they won’t be disturbed by predators and bad weather. Trees are ideal roosting spots for starlings and larger birds but small birds often prefer to shelter in shrubs and hedges. Water Having a bird bath in your garden will provide birds with water to drink and bathe in. Location of the bird bath is very important - birds will only use it if they feel safe. Make sure birds have clear visibility as they bathe, with bushes or trees nearby to provide cover if alarmed. Try placing the bath at different points around the garden to find the most popular site. A wildlife pond is another idea - this can be home to a huge range of wildlife and will also attract birds because of the insect food it will provide. By turning your garden into a small-scale, bird friendly “nature reserve”, you can really make a difference to local bird populations. And of course you will get the enjoyment of seeing more birds and wildlife in your garden. With Warm Wishes

CHILTERN VIEW MAGAZINE

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

Book Review

Books to get you talking Looking for a novel for your book club? Or just a book to discuss over dinner with friends or family? Take your pick… The Binding – Bridget Collins In Emmett Farmer’s world, it’s possible to forget the pain of your past. All you have to do is tell your story to a binder, who’ll lock it away in a book. But as apprentice-binder Emmett soon discovers, not all stories are meant to be forgotten. A highly original book that deftly combines fantasy, historical fiction and romance into one captivating tale. Grandmothers – Salley Vickers Three different women find their paths crossing. Wealthy Blanche has developed a compulsion for shoplifting after being banned from seeing her grandchildren. Poet Nan is planning her funeral and isn’t afraid to speak her mind, but she has a blind spot when it comes to her grandson. And then finally there’s shy Minna, who’s in danger of losing the only person she really cares about. A beautiful, quiet book that looks at family life in all its complexities. Our Planet: The One Place We Call Home – Matt Whyman and Richard Jones This children’s companion to last year’s Netflix hit is sure to prove popular with young nature buffs. Stunning photography and illustrations accompany short, easily digestible paragraphs of text. Our Planet educates and inspires in equal measure. As Sir David Attenborough says, ‘You will

62

be among the next characters who can, if they wish, tell the most extraordinary story of all – how human beings in the twenty-first century came to their senses and started to protect Planet Earth.’ The Green Roasting Tin: Vegan and Vegetarian One Dish Dinners – Rukmini Iyer If you’ve been inspired to eat more meat-free meals, but don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen, this is a useful reference book to have on hand. It’s gained numerous positive reviews in the last two years, and for good reason. Each of the seventy-five recipes is designed to make cooking healthy, tasty meals as easy as possible. In most cases, each dish takes just ten minutes to prepare. Recipes include ‘Miso Aubergines with Tofu, Sesame & Chilli’ and ‘Squash & Gorgonzola Tart with Figs & Pecans’. The Book of Echoes – Rosanna Amaka A young black man struggles to come to terms with a devastating tragedy in 1980s England. Meanwhile, a girl in Nigeria tries to build a better life for herself against the odds. As the pair resist following the paths laid out for them, they’re watched over by the ghost of a murdered woman. A gripping, thought-provoking debut novel. Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister – Jung Chang While it’s a bit heavy going in parts, Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister is a fascinating insight into three of the most powerful women in Chinese history. Ching-ling, wife of Sun Yat-sen, became Mao’s vice-chair. It placed her in direct opposition to her two sisters – May-ling (Madame Chiang Kai-shek), who was the first lady of Nationalist China, and Ei-ling, Chiang’s unofficial main adviser and one of China’s wealthiest citizens.

The smile on a resident’s face makes it clear to see the significant role that volunteers play to those living within our services. Chiltern View is one of Brendoncare’s 10 care homes and is located in Stone, near Aylesbury. The home provides specialist dementia care, where residents can be helped to live as independently as possible and where the emphasis is on quality and enjoyment of life. For some of the residents, the move to a care home can be a lonely time, so giving some of your time can help to enrich the lives of those we support. We rely on volunteers across the 10 services to enable new opportunity, a varied activities programme and support with fundraising events. You may have a few hours a week that you can give to gain valuable experience by volunteering in a care environment. Whatever your reasons for volunteering we want to hear from you. The home are continuing their fundraising efforts to be able to purchase a portable omiVista interactive sensory table that brings fun, emotions and joy to the residents living at Chiltern View. The support from the community can support the home to provide this fantastic sensory table and work with other organisations to support the home. More information about Chiltern View, Volunteer Opportunities and Fundraising can be found on the charity’s website www.brendoncare.org.uk or by telephoning Rebecca Spicer – Volunteer and Activity Manager on 01962 852133

The Rural Community Defibrillator Group A very ‘Happy New Year’ to you all from the RCDG and thank you for helping us make 2019 another very successful year. There are now a total of 30 units installed and registered with South Central Ambulance Service in and around the Princes Risborough area. The most recent defibrillators installed are: ‘The Three Crowns’ at Askett achieved with funding from the Residents Association and Matthew, Princes Risborough Town Mayor together with help from Charles donating his wall from the Three Crowns. ‘Princes Risborough Tennis Club’, achieved with funding raised through donations by the Princes Risborough Tennis Club Members. Without your help none of this could have been done, so a big Thank You for the help you have given.

Pictured above at the Three Crowns are: Alan, Anna, David, Gary, Matthew and Stewart

We would also like to thank our Sponsors, Risboro’ Garage and Princes Risborough Golf Club, who continue to give their support year on year. Thanks also goes to Geoff Clark, First Responder, who looks after the defibrillator registrations with South Central Ambulance and delivers the ‘Confidence and Awareness’ training sessions, giving as many people as possible the early opportunity to become familiar with the equipment and to feel able to use it should an emergency arise. Geoff also coordinates the monthly reporting to South Central Ambulance for each Defibrillator installed. We are grateful for the ever-growing numbers of Defibrillator Guardians who report every month on the readiness of each Defibrillator to respond so ensuring a ‘Rescue Ready’ availability for everyone. This year we have had two of the units activated in life threatening situations with one life saved. This shows that these units and training are vital to the Community. To find out more about the use of defibrillators, what we do or how we can help, please go to our Web Site www.rcdg.org

Pet Health

Pet Emergencies And First Aid By Fiona Mullan BSc Hons RVN VPAC It can be an extremely frightening and stressful time when a pet is injured, suddenly falls ill, or has been involved in an accident. Below are common pet emergencies and some first aid advice in each situation. If possible, keep a well-stocked ‘pet first aid kit’ at home or car (various size bandaging, sterile dressings, tape and scissors) and always have your veterinary contact number to hand. Road Traffic Accidents • Approach the pet only if safe to do so, talk to them slowly and calmly. • Apply a lead to secure dogs straight away. • Assess the state of the injuries and try not to move the pet too much to avoid causing further injury. • If bleeding, apply clean swabs/clothing to the wound and hold pressure. • Use a blanket to lift and transport them. Take them to the nearest vets as soon as possible. Seizures Seizures can occur for a number of reasons and present in a variety of signs. These include; dazed/unsteady, collapse, muscle tremors/ twitching, rigid limbs/body, loss of consciousness, drooling/foaming at the mouth, loss of bladder/ bowel control. • Do not attempt to restrain, pick up, or transport your pet during a seizure. They are not in control of their body, and may injure or bite you by accident. • Move furniture and objects away from your pet that may cause injury. • Reduce noise as much as possible—turn off radios, TV, dim lights and continue to talk to your pet calmly to reassure them.

80

• Record the time and duration of the seizure. If possible, video the seizure to show your vet. • Keep your pet cool as they can overheat, but do not soak them. • Contact your vet as soon as possible but only transport when it safe to do so. Poisonings Common poisonings often involve chocolate, raisins/sultanas, grapes, rat poison, slug bait and lilies. • Remove the source of toxin immediately if possible. • DO NOT attempt to make your pet vomit at home. • Contact your vet as soon as possible and give them as much information as you can about the toxin (time eaten, ingredients, volume eaten etc.) before you arrive. • Keep all packaging (where applicable) and take it with you to the vet. Cuts and grazes • If the wound is bleeding, apply clean gauze swabs or piece of clothing and apply pressure. • If possible, apply a bandage to the wound ensuring it is firm but not too tight. • If the wound is small and not bleeding, keep it as clean with warm salty water, make an appointment with your vet.

Kenzo’s Diaries 7 – A Dogs Life I’m a very lucky doggo, as my days are always different, but I had a feeling that this one was going to be particularly exciting! I decided that my ‘hoomans’ needed to know this too, so I greeted them this morning with lots of jumping and licking, which they always complain about – no idea why? I then thought that maybe I deserved a much tastier breakfast than usual, so I pretended not to like my food pebbles, because that way I know I’ll get ‘chikon’ instead. Success! Next, I was squeezed into my ‘arness’ (it’s a bit tight as too much ‘chikon’) and we set off in the ‘caw’. After the short but boring journey to Stokenchurch we pulled into the ‘caw pawk’ and I saw the sign saying Bruce’s Doggy Day Care. I saw so many 4 legged ‘fwends’ and I knew straight away I was going to run around, smell new smells and play-fight forever with new doggos. They let me out of the ‘caw’ and I couldn’t wait to get going, but my ‘bruva’ had other ideas and he put me on the short rope and held me close to him… How dare he? I decided he wasn’t going to ruin my day, so I pulled as hard as I could. “Kenzo! Heel!” I heard my silly ‘bruva’ exclaim. I tried my best to break ‘fwee’ but he was too strong. I knew I would eventually wear him down though.

After what seemed a very short time, it was time to go. My ‘bruva’ struggled to pull me back into the ‘caw pawk’, I didn’t want to leave. It was so much fun, but it was time for other doggos to have a go. I really hope to go back to Bruce’s Doggy Day Care one day; I heard mummy saying she could do with a break? Who could possibly need a break from me??

Kenzo

As we got to meet more and more ‘hoomans’ and doggos, I pulled my ‘bruva’ more and more, knowing he could only withstand so much pressure before he had had enough! Then, in this big enclosed ‘pawk’ filled with doggos, he cut me loose – whoopee! I bolted straight for the other doggos, bundling and bouncing around excitedly. I jumped over hay bales as fast as I could, showing off to Bruce and all his ‘hooman fwends’. I couldn’t keep the smile off my face and they called me a big happy ‘pola’ bear.

Established in 1985, the confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC) is the premier roofing trades association in the UK. The members are considered to be the best roofing contractors in the business. If you require a roof repair or even a completely new roof, the recommended roofers and roofing companies are here to you. All new works can carry a fully insured 10-20 year back up guarantee (subject to payment). This protects the customer should their chosen roofing contractor decide to cease trading for any reason during the guarantee period. All members are totally commited to providing clients with a quality driven service that reflects good craft skills, ethical working practices and fair prices.
