Letter
Welcome to the November/December issue of Chiltern View. We have had a very busy few weeks here at Chiltern View and we have been so pleased by the feedback we have received for our new magazine. We were delighted to receive this email from Ian English, one of our Community contributors, confirmation indeed that local advertising really does work; ‘Thanks for including Thame Pop Choir on your Community pages, about 25% of our members said they’d seen the choir listed in the magazine, so Chiltern View definitely worked for us.’ We are also pleased to have so many competitions in this issue, so why not just ‘have a go’ and send us
your entry. Our own competition is a festive one for the small and big kids out there, find Rudolf in the magazine and email your answer to salesprv@live.co.uk by December 10th. The lucky winner, picked at random, will receive a yummy chocolate prize! We have a wide selection of restaurants and pubs in this issue, promoting a range of tasty options for Christmas and New Year celebrations across our whole distribution area. Something to suit all tastes. As in previous years, we would like to wish all our readers and advertisers a very Happy Christmas and we will be donating the money saved on Christmas cards to a local charity. If you know of a local charity that you feel would benefit from our support, then please send an email to salesvv@live.co.uk. The closing date for this is 31st December 2017. Until next year

Health
6 signs you need to speak to an Osteopath about your back ache If your back pain is worse at night time, when you are resting, then you should seek advice. Sleep, especially quality sleep, is vital for your everyday health and wellbeing. Lack of sleep, or disturbed sleep will not help if you are already in pain or discomfort. It’s stopping you from doing things If your pain is stopping you from carrying out regular daily activities then it it’s time to seek professional advice. A dull pain can be bearable but if it is affecting the things you enjoy, or even the things you just have to do, then it can also have a negative impact on your mood. The rest of your body… If you are experiencing pain, unusual discomfort, numbness, tingling or weakness in other areas of your body then seek professional advice.
8
The pain is constant and getting worse Lower back pain can sometimes take a few weeks to disappear on its own. However, if it is not improving or if it is getting worse; then it’s time to seek advice. Back pain that continues… Four to six weeks is long enough to put up with a dull lower back pain. By this time, you will be fed up with it and it’s a sign that you need intervention by a professional expert. The pain is severe… If the pain is severe and does not improve after a day or two of using typical remedies then you need to seek help.

Book Review
Gift Inspiration Books make great gifts. If you’re stuck for inspiration or looking for some ideas for your own Christmas wish list, check out this month’s recommendations. For fans of Sarah Waters and Susanna Clarke. The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock – Imogen Hermes Gowar The year is 1785 and widower John Hancock finds himself the owner of what appears to be a dead mermaid. The artefact proves the talk of the town and gains John access to a whole new circle of society, a society that includes the alluring courtesan, Angelica Neal. 18th century London is brought vividly to life in this enchanting debut novel. Enjoyed The Rosie Project and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time? Try… The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr – Frances Maynard Elvira doesn’t see the world in quite the same way as most people. As a result, she lives a fairly sheltered life, caring for her overbearing mother and indulging her interest in biscuits. But then her mother has a stroke and Elvira has to find her own way in the world. With a great storyline, well-rounded characters and plenty of humour to boot, Frances Maynard’s debut novel is a triumph.
Love dystopian fiction such as The Hunger Games and Divergent? Try… The Gender Game – Bella Forrest In Violet Bates’s world, women rule. Men have few rights and boys can be sent away if they’re deemed capable of aggression. Across the river it’s another story – in Patrus men have the power. Violet is serving time in a detention facility when she’s offered the chance to have her slate wiped clean, in return for completing a mission in Patrus. An enjoyable, easy read.
16
Fans of The Great British Bake Off will be clamouring for this one… Nadiya’s British Food Adventure – Nadiya Hussain As Nadiya says, British food today is a melting pot of cuisines from different cultures. This book reflects that, with twists to classic British dishes and more modern favourites. The book ties in with Nadiya’s latest TV series, so includes several of the dishes featured on the show. You’ll find recipes such as Minted Lamb and Apple Pasties, Mango and Passionfruit Jam Roly Poly and Masala Eggy Bread. Recipes are simple to follow, with attractive photographs and engaging introductions. Love a good psychological thriller? Add this to your wish list. The Stolen Child – Sanjida Kay Without giving too much away, The Stolen Child centres around Zoe, Ollie and their daughter, Evie. Evie was adopted by the couple from birth, but starts to receive letters and gifts from a man claiming to be her father. A man who says he wants her back. Full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. If you like Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman, try… Hannah Green and Her Unfeasibly Mundane Existence – Michael Marshall Smith Eleven year old Hannah Green finds the world isn’t quite as mundane as she thought, when it turns out her grandfather is in league with the devil. The world is out of kilter, and the unlikely trio have to work together to put things right. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with great descriptions, bags of humour and believable characters.

Mopping Up Your Windows In The Morning? Cloudy2Clear Windows, the Oxford based window repair company, has added a new product range to eliminate a problem that always appears at this time of year – condensation on the inside of your windows. The company which specialises in saving householders a fortune by repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has added a new string to their bow with their new Insulating Glass. Manager Aidan Cook, explains why windows seem to attract moisture in the autumn and winter, ‘During the spring and summer many people have moisture in their houses but they just don’t realise it. When the temperature outside starts to fall at night then so does the temperature of the glass in your double glazing. Once the glass is colder than the walls then water vapour condenses on it which
is why you get windows which can be sopping wet in the morning. This can have a very damaging effect on frames, window sills and floors. I’ve seen people having to literally mop up pools of water every morning.’ So how does the new glass help? ‘With our new anti-condensation glass the glass absorbs the heat in the house and keeps the glass at the same temperature as the walls. This means that the water vapour doesn’t get a chance to collect on the glass, keeping it completely free from any condensation whatsoever. The difference is quite amazing. And as we’re only replacing the glass the cost is absolutely minimal.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged or suffering from condensation then give Aidan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be more than happy to help!

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello! My name is Gertie, I’m almost 2 years old and a Lurcher type. I’m a sweet girl and a firm favourite with our walkers, but I can take a little while to trust new people, more so men, than women. I adore the staff and have formed lovely bonds with the carers. I am muzzled when I am out in public as I have a very strong chase drive – the muzzle doesn’t worry me though and I am comfortable wearing one, so do not let that put you off as I am such a wonderful girl! I have lived with another dog previously and could live with another dog pending some successful dog mixes. The other dog would need to be playful but also give me space when I want it. I will need to have my home alone time built up gradually as I may suffer from some separation anxiety, but hopefully once I’m settled in my new home this will improve. I have been provided with a crate in my kennel as I like to ‘hide’ away at times 30
and this is something that can be transferred into my new home. I would benefit from further training, this will not only strengthen the bond with my new owners, but it will help with my confidence and provide mental stimulation too. In an understanding and calm home, I will make a wonderful companion as I am a fun, loving and active girl. Can you offer me a loving and permanent new home? www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695 www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Hearing Technology and Me: Michael Cook Michael, aged 21 from High Wycombe, is a man of many talents, including wildlife photography, graphic design and music. He was also born with a severe hearing loss and uses hearing aids to help him to achieve his goals. We asked Michael what it is like to be a young person with a hearing loss and his experiences with hearing technology. When did you first start wearing hearing aids? I was diagnosed with a hearing loss at 5 months old and at the same time was given my first pair of hearing aids. Apart from pulling them out of my ears to throw them away as a baby, I’ve always accepted them and understood the difference they make to my daily life. How would you say your hearing has affected you as a person? One of my biggest passions in life is photography, and I think that came from my hearing loss, as it is something I can do alone and lets me create a foundation for others to make their own stories. While I prefer to do hobbies and activities by myself, I still take part in social occasions with my family and work here at Aston Hearing. I have not let my hearing loss dictate my life or define me as a person. How can we address stigmas associated with hearing devices? As 1 in 6 people in the UK now face a hearing loss, I hope wearing aids becomes as common as wearing glasses. Although I don’t feel attached to any stigmas, I wear my aids extra loud for people to see. I’m more than happy to show people my aids and answer any questions they have.
When did you make the change from NHS devices to private technology? My mum (Paula) is an audiologist and when she started to work at Aston Hearing at the beginning of 2016 we decided to try something different. The technology has been amazing – the devices are more powerful with more amplification, as well as much better sound quality. I now work in an office so I really appreciate the improved performance. Do you make use of any features on your devices? With modern technology, there are so many options for Bluetooth connectivity and streaming. So far I’ve really enjoyed connecting with my phone so that I can stream music directly into my hearing devices. I’m always interested in the possibilities of hearing technology and would be open to trying new features. What are your hopes for the future of hearing technology? Technology has moved on so far in the last few years and I think we are about to see more ground-breaking developments. Personally, I would love to have the aids synching with biometric data, so they would be able to tell you your brain activity, heart rate and other vital statistics. Sounds like science fiction, but it could soon be a reality!!

Pet Health
A Pet Is For Life......Not Just For Christmas!
Dr. Kathryn Miller MRCVS The holiday season sees a massive rise in the sale of pets and in particular puppies. Some of these animals will be lucky; going to families that have researched the breed, understand the husbandry and training needed to stop the puppy becoming a problem dog, and appreciate the associated costs of a decade’s responsibility. Unfortunately though, many of these puppies will be impulse buys. Phrases such as “how hard can raising a puppy really be?”, and “it will make a lovely Christmas present for the children” make a vet’s heart sink. Sadly, many of these puppies will be left at rescue shelters after Christmas when the reality of owning a dog hits.
CROSSROADS
Raising a puppy well is very time consuming and a big responsibility. Constant supervision is required for the first few months – teething puppies will chew anything, and an immature puppy bladder means that 4-hourly toilet breaks are required, all week long. Remember, the puppy will grow into an adult dog that will depend on you for EVERYTHING. The average cost of a small breed dog is £15,000 over its life time, and substantially more for a large breed dog. So please, before buying a puppy for Christmas, do your research and consider adopting from a rescue centre! Talk with your vet, find out the annual costs of vaccinations, preventative healthcare, neutering, possible emergency surgeries etc. Find out the illnesses that your particular breed is predisposed to, and ensure you would be able to cope with these. A dog is a wonderful companion; but is always a privilege, never a ‘necessity’, and certainly never a Christmas gift.

Waddesdon Competition
Find animal magic and festive winter light at Waddesdon this Christmas 11 November 2017 – 2 January 2018, Wednesday-Sunday, 11am-6pm Also open Mon 1 Jan & Tue 2 Jan. Closed 24, 25 & 26 December Christmas is always a very special time to visit Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, and 2017 is no exception. The theme for this year’s decorations, Enchanted Menagerie, celebrates the weird and wonderful animals that can be seen throughout Waddesdon’s collections, from an elephant parade inspired by the 18th-century musical automaton to a life-sized zebra and trees decked with colourful birds and mythical beasts!
From dusk, an extraordinary new light and sound show Waddesdon Imaginarium, created by video design students from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, will be projected onto the Manor’s ornate façade. Inspired by the
COMPETITION
architecture, gardens and history of Waddesdon, objects in the collections have been 3D scanned and transformed into detailed animations. Visitors will be dazzled by roaming porcelain animals, dancing musical clocks, fluttering clouds of butterflies and moths and 18th-century portraits creating a fantastical visual story of Waddesdon. Wrap up warm, head outside and discover light art by American artist Lauren Booth. Electric Menagerie winds from the Aviary to the Stables, illuminating the Rothschilds’ passion for natural history with neon goats, parrots and even a flea circus. Shop & Eat Waddesdon’s Christmas Fair, 15 November-10 December, a firm favourite in the festive calendar, is back for 2017 bigger and better than ever, with 80 decorated wooden chalets set against the enchanting backdrop of the floodlit Manor. In a new location on the North Front, there will be high-quality, unique gifts, decorations, crafts and delicious food from local artisan producers and national independent traders.
We have 2 family grounds tickets to Waddesdon to give away so for your chance to win, please answer the following question:-
Q) There is a very popular musical automaton in the collection at Waddesdon Manor. What type of animal is it? Email your answer to: Coralie at salesprv@live.co.uk by 17th November. 54

Remembrance Day
The Role of the Royal British Legion The Royal British Legion’s role remains as contemporary and as vital as it has ever been supporting today’s generation of Armed Forces families and veterans, whether living with an injury or illness, coping with bereavement or finding employment. However, the Legion does so much more, including funding research into blast injury studies, providing holidays at Legion owned seaside centres around the UK, delivering specialist dementia support, funding theatre recovery projects and working with partner charities in their Pop-In Centres. The money raised through the Poppy Appeal goes directly to The Royal British Legion’s work, providing through life support to anyone who is currently serving in the British Armed Forces, who has previously served, and their families. This vital work is entirely dependent on the public’s generous support – so please wear your poppy with pride, knowing that you are helping the Armed Forces community to live on. Services & Support The Legion’s own Battle Back centre in Shropshire provides recovery for the wounded, injured and sick and has seen almost 3,000 Armed Forces personnel come through its doors. The Legion is helping beneficiaries live independently and with dignity, whether that is
in their own home or in one of the charity’s care homes. It’s working with Dementia UK to provide Admiral nurses, a service that supports the carers of its beneficiaries who have dementia, whilst the charity also has six care homes to provide short and long-term care for serving and ex-Service people and their dependents, and its own ‘Handy Van’ service is providing a dedicated and trusted team trained to carry out small home repairs. The charity is helping Service leavers find employment and also provides advice and guidance to partners and dependents of serving personnel. It also provides specialist compensation advice, help with debt and emergency situations and support to beneficiaries through grants and loans, helping to ease the burden of financial pressure for thousands of Service and ex-Service people every year. A welcome break – the charity offers holidays to those that need it most, whether it’s because they haven’t had a holiday in years, have been struggling with a recent bereavement, or are juggling family and Armed Forces commitments. With four permanent locations around the UK where members of the Armed Forces community take a break, they provide a relaxing environment where everything is taken care of. If you would like to learn more about The Royal British Legion, take part in one of their fundraising events or volunteer visit www.royalbritishlegion.org.uk or if you need help, call their Contact Centre helpline on 0808 802 8080.

Recipe
Salmon & Monkfish Filo Wreath This festive wreath makes a great alternative to traditional roast turkey and can be prepared in advance the night before. Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling time
Ingredients: For The Koftas
• Sunflower oil, for greasing • 100g butter, melted • 270g pack filo pastry, thawed if frozen • 450g salmon fillet, skinned and diced • 450g monkfish fillet, skinned and diced • 225g cooked peeled tiger prawns • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 3 tbsp chopped fresh dill • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Lemon wedges and dill sprigs, to garnish
1.
Use the sunflower oil to grease a 1.2 litre capacity ring mould, then line the mould with cling film.
2.
Brush the sheets of pastry one by one with melted butter and use nearly all of them to line the ring mould. Overlap the pastry sheets slightly as you go and repeat the layers 3-4 times. Leave the excess pastry to drape over the side of the mould.
3.
Mix the salmon, monkfish and prawns in a large bowl and stir in the lemon juice and chopped dill. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
4.
Spoon the fish mixture into the pastrylined mould, pressing down gently. Fold the excess pastry in over the filling and top with more buttered sheets of pastry, cutting them to fit and completely cover the filling. Stamp small star shapes out of any remaining sheets of buttered pastry and place on a plate. This festive wreath makes a great alternative to traditional roast turkey and can be prepared in advance the night before.
5.
Cover the ring mould and the plate with cling film and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour (or overnight). Carefully invert the ring mould onto a large baking sheet and then remove the mould and the cling film. Re-melt any remaining butter and brush all over the pastry.
6.
TIP
Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so simply cut to fit. Don’t worry if they tear, just place another piece of buttered pastry on top to cover the tear. 64
Bake in a preheated oven at 190C/fan 170C/ Gas Mark 5 for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Bake the pastry stars on a separate baking sheet for 5 minutes until golden.
7.
Allow the wreath to stand for 5 minutes then transfer to a serving platter and decorate with the pastry stars. Garnish with lemon wedges and dill sprigs. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

DON’T HANG UP JUST YET! Now is the time of year when we’re all more than ready to hang up our business hats and turn thoughts to hanging up a Christmas stocking instead. After all, we’re heading towards the end of another hard-worked twelve months and we all deserve a bit of a break. I, for one, wouldn’t argue with that. What I would say though and I hope you’ll excuse me mixing metaphors, is that whilst we all love a rousing chorus of Jingle Bells, we can’t afford to be ostriches, burying our heads and pretending we don’t know the new year’s fast heading in our direction. In fact, there’s never a better time than these weeks at the end of the old year and on the cusp of the new, to look back at what we’ve done right, business-wise, review what we haven’t done so well and make some decisions on working smarter not harder in the coming months. Most of us in business are doing what we’re doing because we’re good at it and there’s no doubt, when you’re good at something, it’s far more profitable doing that than struggling to do something in an area where you don’t excel. For example: if you’ve spent a great many years training and qualifying as an osteopath, odds are you’re not hugely interested in running a PR operation. If you run a prompt and efficient plumbing service you may not shine when it comes to the creative design and the tech knowledge needed to put together a successful website. If you’re knee-deep in flour, producing cakes to rival Mary Berry’s, then it’s possible the thought of sitting down to do your figures has your knees knocking – after all, if that was where your talents lay you’d probably have gone down a different career path altogether. The good news is though, with communication as it is today, small to medium sized companies have never had more access to professional support and expertise. In my line of work I’m privileged to be asked for my advice a lot of the time but, if it’s not giving away a trade secret, I have to confess the pearl of wisdom I hand to most people is the same pearl, time after time - do what you’re good at and like doing and outsource the things you’re not good at and hate doing. There are experts out there who can do everything - from your PR to creating an all-singing, all-dancing website. There are even those who can take that messy shoe-box-full of invoices and receipts you have secreted under your desk and convert the mess into a perfect set of figures, without batting an eyelid! In the coming Christmas break, why not spend some pleasurable time thinking how much quicker you could grow your business if you were sensibly outsourcing to experts who could deal more quickly, efficiently and economically with tasks that have been taking hours of your time just because you’re not very good at them. You can choose to call it a New Year Resolution; I’d just call it Common Sense. Have a great Xmas and a happy, healthy, stress-free and profitable new year.

Gardening
Garlic The nights are now drawing in, and another gardening season comes to an end. The veg patch will be looking a little tired and most of us will now be ready for a winter rest, and prepare for next spring. But with a little thought and preparation it is possible to put your plot to good use and reap the benefit of harvesting crops during the cold dark months between November and February. Garlic, shallots and onions can be planted now, and basically just left to their own devices. One tip is to keep an eye on the sets when first planted, as birds can pop them out of the soil. Just make sure the roots establish, meaning your crops are sturdy, stable and ready for the winter. As well as onion sets, winter hardy spring onions are a quick, reliable crop that will survive the cold weather and thrive. The variety to go for is ‘White Lisbon’. Perpetual Spinach is a ‘cut and come again’ crop, a real star. It can be planted pretty much at any time of the year, and will establish quickly, giving you an excellent harvest of tasty leaves. I have even harvested this crop when the plants have been frozen solid, just lower them into boiling water, and you’ll have a great addition to a meal in minutes. You can get ahead with your broad bean crop by planting the variety Aqualdulce now. This selection is very tough and hardy, and by getting the seed into the ground now will mean you’ll have broad beans on the table weeks earlier than if you plant in spring. The new fresh tips of the leaves are an excellent addition to an early spring salad too. Likewise, peas are well worth growing. The varieties I go for to succeed in winter are
76
‘Kelvedon Wonder’ and ‘Meteor’. As with broad beans, getting the seed in the ground in late autumn will give you fresh delicious peas a month or more earlier than spring sowing. If you have a greenhouse or a polytunnel, giving your vegetable plants a bit of protection, then there are a number of other options. We grow a range of winter salads under cover for all round green leaves. ‘Cut & come again’ varieties are a really good choice. There are a number to choose from, Lambs Lettuce, Mixed Leaves and the lettuce ‘Winter Gem’ are all worth growing. So, that’s the 2017 season done and dusted. Some things will have done well, others less so, - but we gardeners will be ready and waiting to get going once the spring arrives for another gardening season! Happy gardening,

Your Local Theatre Competition
What a festive feeling! The Strictly finals will soon be on the horizon but reigning champion, Joanne Clifton will not be there; instead she’ll be playing the role of a welder in the iconic musical, Flashdance! Flashdance - The Musical tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of 18-year-old Alex, a welder by day and ‘flashdancer’ by night, who dreams of going to a prestigious dance academy and becoming a professional dancer. The show is based on the phenomenally successful, Oscar-winning, 1983 film that starred Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri. Joanne stars alongside A1’s Ben Adams and said she’s excited to be part of this well-known musical: “I think everyone in the world whether dancer or non-dancer, as soon as they hear ‘What a Feeling’, remember that iconic scene at the end of the film and I’m so incredibly lucky that I get to do that every night, along with fabulous numbers like “She’s a Maniac.” “I’m over the moon! It’s another amazing opportunity in my musical theatre career and I
can once again sing and act alongside dancing! I’ve always wanted to do musical theatre as a kid but I chose dancing because my parents couldn’t afford for me to do both, either competing or at a musical theatre school in London. “So I chose the safe route but have gone full circle. I’ve done what I wanted to do in competitive dancing, achieved what I wanted to achieve, and ended up at this. This is just another dream come true!” Dance like you’ve never danced before and book now by visiting Aylesbury Waterside Theatre Box Office, call 0844 871 7607 (bkg fee. Calls 7p per min plus your phone company’s access charge) or visit www.atgtickets.com/aylesbury (bkg fee). Catch the Wicked Queen, Su Pollard at the Princes Risborough Lights on Sat 25 Nov!
*Chance to win* It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Pantomime season strikes, and we want you to be a part of it! So grab your shovel and your pick and get entering our Christmas Competition…
For your chance to win 4 x tickets to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs starring Su Pollard, Andy Collins, La Voix & Jon Moses at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre on Fri 8 Dec, 7pm, simply tell us what fruit appears in the classic fairy tale: a) Banana
b) Grapefruit
