Editors’Letter Welcome to the September/October issue of Chiltern View magazine. For many people, Autumn is their favourite time of year, and we would definitely have to agree with this. There’s something strangely comforting about colder, frosty days, especially if the sun is shining. Nights drawing in, cosy evenings with open fires, warming stews or comfort puddings, but especially the beautiful red and gold colours of the wonderful countryside where we live. We feel our front cover captures this and the bright sunlight signalling a brighter future ahead, after all the troubled times we’ve had lately. We are all hopeful that schools and universities can welcome students back to a ‘normal’ year of teaching and learning, after such a difficult time of online studies and zoom meetings. Well done to all those who have completed this year and we wish you every success in your next adventure. Things do finally feel like they are opening up and we are so excited to include 4 competitions in this issue!! We welcome back Aylesbury Theatre. They

are once again offering fantastic shows and are giving our readers the chance to win tickets (p60). Thame Players (p24) have also opened their doors and they have many exciting shows on offer and a competition too! Both theatres have been hit particularly hard by all the restrictions and would welcome your support. Abingdon Air Show (p50) also missed out last year and have had many changes of dates, but fingers crossed the show will go on this time and you could win tickets; - but enter quicky! We also have news on Kop Hill (p 32). Having missed last year altogether, they are back and are providing a much-needed family weekend of exciting events. But, what about the 4th competition? Work gets underway on lasting tribute to Buckinghamshire’s community spirit. Work has begun on the construction of Nightingale’s Rainbow – a new sculptural installation at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury which will stand to pay tribute to the community spirit and kindness shown across the communities of Buckinghamshire during the pandemic and will be a permanent symbol of hope in the face of adversity.

Alongside the physical structure, a Virtual Nightingale’s Rainbow has been created where you can show your personal appreciation and support for anyone who has supported you or your community through the crisis by buying a Rainbow Tile in their name. Tring Park Social Distancing Walk Overview This walk includes a world famous museum, a magnificent village hall, a few follies and the all year round beauty of Tring Park. Length: 4.2 miles (Allow 2 hours) Start & finish: The Forge car park, High Street, Tring HP23 5AG Access Information: Easy walking on paths and lanes with one gradual climb Food & drink: Pubs and cafés in Tring. None enroute Route Turn right out of the car park along the High Street and take the second left up Akeman Street to the top. 1. Turn right, then left along Hastoe Lane, go under the flyover and turn right onto a concrete track. 2. Go past the gate and continue straight ahead for 180m to a path junction. Turn left uphill, keeping to the right of a hedgerow. Keep climbing to a wood, continue up along its edge and follow the path as it bears right into the wood.

3. Turn left uphill for 130m to a path junction. Fork right and continue uphill for a further 300m to the next junction. Fork right again to steps down onto a major track. Turn left uphill.

5. Turn left up Marlin Hill for 200m and right into Tring Park. Walk along the track for a mile and, where the Ridgeway turns right, keep ahead down to a white building – the Summer House. 6. Follow the path as it bends left downhill to the obelisk. Continue directly ahead down to a kissing gate. Go through it, turn right and cross the open area of the Park towards a footbridge over the A41. Go through the gates, cross the footbridge and follow the wide fenced path towards a road. 7. Just before the road, turn left through a gate, walk to the

A Musical Extravaganza in Thame! Newly re-opened following a year of lockdowns, Thame Players are treating us to a musical extravaganza this autumn, with six very different shows, from rock bands and comic opera to music with a touch of comedy and tributes to the iconic Tina Turner and Abba. On Sunday 19th September, rock band Pulse present their tribute to the legendary 60s and 70s band Pink Floyd, while on Friday 24th September, the Merry Opera Company present Gilbert and Sullivan’s best-known comic opera, The Mikado. They are followed on Sunday 26th September by Thame’s very own Boodlum Band featuring the usual line-up of ukulele, double bass, washboard and phonofiddle. The Boodlums find humour in the best and worst of popular music and are a sell-out every time they come.

On Saturday 2nd October, Steamy Windows perform a tribute to the great Tina Turner, whose stellar career spanned over 50 years. This is a dynamic smash-hit production, widely accepted as Tina’s foremost tribute act. On Sunday 3rd October there is a tribute to Cat Stevens, or Yusuf as he later became known, in aid of UNICEF UK. This tribute show is an honest and loving reflection of the timeless and insightful music of this hugely popular and adored singer/songwriter, performed by Keith James. To round off this musical extravaganza, on Friday 29th October, Abba Sensation, one of the best-ever Abba tribute acts, will be putting on a stunning show with the Abba sound. the Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration; and this month, as autumn works its way into our outdoor spaces, Alan Titchmarsh explains why variety is the spice of life, even in the garden!

most exciting times is when you wake up on a certain day and you can just smell the fact the season has arrived. It’s something in the air - a kind of sourness, a tang that lingers. You can smell things just beginning to decay, but it’s in a way that is replenishing, stimulating and invigorating, because it means things are turning and new possibilities are around the corner.

With the approach of autumn, at the moment we’re going through that phase where the colours and the shapes are changing. There’s sometimes a sadness when you realise summer is coming to an end, and the leaves certainly seem to be falling earlier this year. My advice though, is to embrace the new season and really go after all the potential and possibilities that it holds. After all, we’re actually very lucky in Britain – where plants are concerned we can afford ourselves a different favourite every month; snowdrops in January, daffodils in February, tulips in March and so on. People tend to associate autumn with brown and orange tones, and a rustling underfoot; but it’s about much more than that. One of the

Also, consider getting your compost boosted with all those leaves suddenly in abundance. Mostly though, look forward to the coming change and admire nature’s versatility. There is tremendous colour still around us, and where the leaves have descended, look at the skeletal, artistic majesty of trees.

So as autumn arrives I would offer the following bits of advice. Firstly, hold on to the last bits of colour and savour them. Next, enjoy what’s there - perhaps you have some raspberries or any number of the late-flowering varieties such as Cyclamens, Begonias, and of course, Crocuses. Also, see how your garden is evolving – sure, that asparagus bed is no longer cropping, but

Chinnor Runners are Running the length of Wales for Diabetes Simon Pollard and Mark Evans are going to be running the length of Wales to help to raise money for charity. Starting on the 6th of September 2021, they are taking part in the world’s toughest mountain race, the ‘Dragon’s Back’ (www. dragonsbackrace.com). 18 months is a long time without dancing…..

Abingdon Air & Country Show 2021 After a year’s absence and a number of date changes due to “you know what”, the Abingdon Air & Country Show, all ticket event at Abingdon Airfield, Dalton Barracks, Oxfordshire, returns on Saturday 11th September and will feature a range of attractions for all ages. This year, the three-hour Flying Display is set to include the RAF Typhoon, BBMF Spitfire, Europe’s only

airworthy B17 Flying Fortress ‘Sally B’, The Blades Aerobatic Display Team (4 Extra 300s flown by ex-RAF Red Arrows pilots), Europe’s only airworthy Westland Wessex helicopter, a ‘Russian’ Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane Mk I, amongst others.
