Editors’ Letter Welcome to the Sept/Oct issue of Chiltern View ( Villages), a magazine just packed with local information and local advertisers. We have had a challenging summer here at Chiltern View as I have been busy in Cornwall celebrating my son’s wedding – a perfect day in a perfect location! My colleagues, Steph and Coralie have done an amazing job of producing our 3 magazines in my absence and I can’t thank them enough for all their hard work. I often think of September as a time for change and new beginnings as we pass from summer ( and what an amazing one we have had!) into Autumn and the new school year gets underway. As I write this, in the middle of August, the shops are already full of school uniforms and stationery and many of us are starting to think about the longer evenings ahead. Our community and advertising sections are packed with organisations who can help you to fill those evenings productively, from keeping fit to learning a new craft or musical instrument – so why not try something new this Autumn. As part of the ‘new beginnings’ why not get in touch if you run a local business or community organisation and let us help with local promotion.

The Island of Elba

Tuscany’s Best Kept Secret

Barely an hour on the ferry across the Piombino Channel, the Isle of Elba greets you with rugged mountains, range after range rising towards the blue sky, and a deeply indented coast laced with tingling sands, rocky coves and near-tropical turquoise waters. The Romans called it ‘Ilva’, hence ‘Elba’, after the Ilvates, also known as Ligurians, who had lived there since ancient times and long exploited the rich mineral seams. This is the largest island in the Tuscan archipelago national park but it’s just about sixteen miles long and only two miles across at its narrowest point, a secluded holiday haven blessed by stunning landscapes, popular with Italians in summer but peaceful in mid-season, whether you come for the beach or prefer to ramble in the hills. The west coast is wild, covered in fragrant Mediterranean scrub, the north is lush and green, dotted with vineyards and chestnut groves, while the arid sun-baked south is the domain of cacti and palms. Over 90% of the land is hills and mountains, largely forested, where wild orchids and lavender splash myriad colours alongside spring cyclamens, rock roses and strawberry trees. Here and there, the sweet fragrance of honeysuckle fills the air and fallow deer and mouflons bounce on the slopes at dusk.

Elba’s highest point, Mount Capanne can be reached on a steep trail or by cable car, well

PAGE 8

worth the effort either way. Up there at over 3000 feet, the panorama stretches from the tiny string of Tuscan islands to the mainland and from Corsica in clear weather to the whole of Elba where red-roofed villages nestle in the greenery and mere ribbons of road meander around heavenly beaches and precipitous cliffs. Far below on the northern shore, the lovely little resort of Marciana is lined with umbrella pines and oleander while on the south coast, Marina di Campo is all yachts and golden sands glowing below the wooded hills. But Elba has a beach for every day of the week and more, from the white sands of Procchio Bay to the luminous Rio Marina on the east coast or the superb Porto Azzurro with its bustling Piazza, flower-draped lanes and sulphur-rich lagoon looking across the deep blue inlet of the sea. Portoferraio, the capital, is on the north coast, crouching lion-like on a rocky peninsula jutting out to sea, its magnificent bay guarded by a forbidding fortress. Sailing boats, yachts and ferries mingle their reflections in the harbour and the old town climbs up the hill, green shutters and pink walls jostling along the alleyways among hibiscus and pomegranate trees. The walk along the ramparts is breathtaking, cooled by the breeze sweeping across the bay from the open sea. Portoferraio is a charming place, dotted with ice cream stalls, bakeries selling flat bread and honey cakes, al fresco restaurants for seafood and fish and souvenir shops brimming with all things labelled ‘Napoleon’, from T-shirts and mugs to the island’s spring water. There are quite a few places connected to Napoleon but most illustrious is the Villa di san Martino tucked in a leafy valley where the deposed emperor was ‘banished’, though allowed to live in regal style. He escaped less than a year later and looking across the landscaped gardens to the blue waters of the Med. glistening in the distance, one wonders why he ever wanted to leave one of the most enticing islands in Tuscany. Credit Crunch Gardening

by Pippa Greenwood

If you feel that your garden has become an expensive hobby, check-out my top tips for Credit-Crunch Gardening. • Apply for an allotment. An allotment opens up a whole new opportunity to grow almost unlimited food at very little cost, get exercise without paying for the gym, and learn a lot from your neighbouring plot holders. • Gardeners are a very generous bunch, so don’t feel embarrassed to ask friends, neighbours, or fellow allotmenteers for cuttings or seedlings of plants that you have admired. It is part of what gardening is all about. • Collect softish, deciduous leaves to make free soil improver. Just make a ‘cage’ from galvanised wire with posts at the corners or cram the leaves into bin liners and puncture a few holes.

as hedgerow blackberries - great for crumble, stewed with some apple or for making into bramble jelly. • Many fruits sold in the supermarket come in smart, clear-plastic trays, which can be used as miniature seed trays, and most even come with a clear plastic top, the perfect mini propagator lid.

• Make the most of every bit of fruit and veg that your garden or allotment produces. Make jams, chutnies, jellies and of course bottle or freeze just about anything else.

• Growing your own vegetables really can save you a packet. Right now you can order in seed for crops, and onion sets and garlic for crops early next summer. Then early in the year start planting potatoes and sowing seed.

• Make your own wasp trap. Use a jam jar part filled with stale jam, mixed with water and topped with tin foil with a few holes in it made using a pencil.

• Look after your garden tools. Store them in a dry shed or garage, wipe over any metal parts with an oily rag to keep rust at bay and they’ll last years longer.

• Many local councils offer really good value composters and compost bins. Better still, if you’re at all handy with the hammer and nails, create your own from old pallets or floor boards.

• Invest in a few raspberry canes. This has to be the best money saving crop, as they are expensive in the shops. Once established autumn fruiting varieties yield heavy crops and can give you ‘posh’ fruit....for just pennies.

• Fill a flowerbed with colour by sowing it with hardy annual seeds – some can be collected from existing plants, others from packet seed, often at under £1 per packet. • Ask your local pub to give you any stale beer from the driptrays and use it as slug bait. Use an old plastic beaker part filled with beer and placed so that the rim is about 1cm above soil level in a slug and snail prone area. • Enjoy some wild food. Many garden plants are edible, and don’t forget the old favourites such PAGE 16

• The garden furniture is probably the most costly item in your garden and statistics show it’s what gardeners spend most money on replacing. Remove washable seat-pads and cushions first, wash and dry these and then cover the furniture up or move it into a shed or garage if possible. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides. ‘Benson and the Great War’

WW1 Centenary Event at Benson Parish Hall on Saturday 20th September 2014 In order to commemorate the centenary of World War One, Benson Village is holding a ‘Benson and The Great War’ event at Benson Parish Hall, from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 20th September.

Much research has taken place into the lives and deaths of the service personnel from Benson who fell in battle during WW1. Information about the life of each name on the Benson War memorial has been collected and we intend to provide details of their stories

PAGE 20

and any historical artefacts, both public and personal, as part of the exhibition. There will also be posters, photographs, music and a model battle. The event opens with the Roke and Benson Brass Band who will play WW1 themed songs, then accompany a Commemoration Service. Light refreshments will be provided by the Benson WI. Later at 3pm, the RAF Benson Military Wives Choir will give a concert. We hope that this event will be of interest to everybody. Come and see how the villagers of Benson lived at that time and commemorate the centenary of this turning point in history. Anne Fowler Publicity Officer for ‘Benson and the Great War’

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog(s) of the Month Hi, my name is Hannah, I’m a 10 year old small mixed breed. I came into the Rescue after my owner sadly passed away. I am deaf and have poor eyesight but that doesn’t stop me enjoying life & I love a run in the enclosed exercise areas. I am very affectionate once I know you & I love a fuss. I still have the odd mad moment – play bowing and skittish running when I feel like it.

If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

My new owners should have experience of deaf and/or blind dogs. I cannot live with dogs or cats and would like a home where any children are aged 14 years and over.

Famous People of the Chilterns:

Jerome K Jerome

The timeless medieval village of Ewelme, near Wallingford, is a fitting resting place for the author Jerome K Jerome, who wrote memorably about the charms of Old England. His best-known work is Three Men in a Boat - a comedy novel about a boating holiday on the Thames taken by Jerome and two friends, plus a dog called Montmorency. In the story they row along the river from London to Oxford, and so pass many miles of Chilterns scenery and landmarks. Remarkably, all the pubs and inns mentioned in the book are still open today, including the George and Dragon at Wargrave, the Swan at Pangbourne and the Bull at Streatley. In 2005 the comedians Griff Rhys Jones, Dara O’Briain and Rory McGrath re-created the journey for a TV programme. Inspired by his honeymoon on the Thames, Three Men in Boat was published in 1889, bringing instant fame and fortune for Ewelme © John Morris Jerome and cementing his love of the river. The Chilterns landscape must also have made an impression because it appears, from letters, that he lived in turn at Monks Corner, near Marlow, then at Wood End House in Marlow, Ridge End in Marlow Common and, finally, at a farmhouse near Ewelme. All are still private houses. Jerome Klapka - brother of Paulina Deodata, Blandina Dominica and Milton Melancthon Jerome may have inherited his sense of humour from his parents, but little else. Brought up in poverty in London’s East End, he worked Jerome K Jerome grave variously as a clerk, a hack journalist, schoolmaster and an actor (playing “every role in Hamlet except Ophelia”). His first PAGE 30

humorous book appeared in 1885 and he went on to become a prolific writer and editor of The Idler and other magazines. Jerome K Jerome died in 1927 and his ashes were buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church in Ewelme. The grave is marked with a large headstone. The church houses the elaborate tomb of Alice, Duchess of Suffolk, Geoffrey Chaucer’s granddaughter. A covered walkway leads to the cloistered 15th century almshouses, adjacent to the 15th century village school which still operates in its original building. While in Ewelme it is also well worth visiting the pretty watercress beds, restored by the Chiltern Society, and the adjacent nature reserve (www.ewelmewatercressbeds.org). This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In the Raw…

Nut spread and cookies..

Healthy and fun with a bit of patience chucked in the bowl... INGREDIENTS 135g/ 1 ¼ cup basic dark chocolate, melted 200g/1 ½ cups hazelnut butter 50g/1/3c maple syrup, coconut nectar or runny honey 50ml/ ¼ cup cold pressed oil; hazelnut and sesame work great here 1 tsp vanilla powder or extract METHOD We all know and love ‘Nutella’ and wouldn’t we love to have a raw, healthy version of that delicious, childhood favourite? Well, now you’ve got one and we can even use hazelnuts in order to make it super authentic, but you can use any nut butter you wish. Whisk all ingredients together in a mixing bowl until smooth. Pour into a glass jar or airtight container and store at room temperature for up to 2 months. If you don’t want to make your own chocolate, you can just buy your favourite brand of raw chocolate and use that. I would recommend Forever Cacao. Here’s a fun way of using this chocolate spread …. Orange Thumbprints filled with Chocolate Spread DRY 100g/1 cup rolled oat flour (rolled oats ground into PAGE 38

flour in coffee grinder or Vitamix) 30g/ ¼ cup lucuma 50g/1/3 cup coconut sugar, powdered in Vitamix or coffee grinder 100g /1 cup almond flour (see shopping list on ooosha) 1 tsp vanilla powder WET 45g/ ¼ cup cacao butter, melted 60g/ 1/3 cup water or orange juice 15ml/1 tbsp maple syrup 10 drops orange essential oil Zest of 2 oranges METHOD In a food processor, pulse all dry ingredients to combine. Add the cacao butter and water and pulse to combine, until the mixture comes together. Roll into bite sized balls, insert your thumb into the centre to create a little indentation (or use a ring mould to cut a hole). Using a tea spoon or piping bag, fill the indentation with Chocolate Spread. Set in the fridge until the cookies and spread are set. Serve or store in an air tight container for 1 week in the fridge. 7 Easy Ways to Save Money on Your Heating Oil With over 53,000 homes off the gas grid in Hertfordshire, many families in our community use oil to heat their homes. If you’re on oil and looking to make a saving on your next order, check out our useful tips for smart, simple ways to cut down your costs! 1) Watch the weather - Oil prices typically decline during spring and summer, when temperatures are high and demand is low. By topping-up your tank this summer, you can take advantage of these great prices and stay warm in winter for less. 2) Compare prices - You might have a regular supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around, or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil. 3) Buy in bulk - Instead of topping-up your oil levels on a regular basis, fill it up in one go to cut down on delivery costs and get a great bulk-buy price. 4) Order early - Set a regular reminder, mark it on your calendar or simply plan ahead of time to beat the rush, avoid costly emergency orders and take advantage of cheaper delivery options. 5) Add an additive - An inexpensive way to upgrade your fuel, oil additives prevent tank sludge build-up, improve overall efficiency and save you PAGE 40

money by reducing expensive maintenance costs, operating problems and boiler breakdowns. 6) Group buy - Buying as a group is the best way to get a discount on your oil, but did you know that you can also do it online? Websites like BoilerJuice automatically group your delivery with others in your area, to help you qualify for group discounts every day of the week. 7) Spread the cost with a payment plan - While payment schemes often mean an expensive contract with a specific supplier, signing up for a monthly payment plan with an impartial site gives you the ability to spread your oil costs, while guaranteeing you the best quote from a range of suppliers across the UK.

Risborough Rangers FC

New pan-disability football group at Risborough Rangers FC offers free enjoyable ‘taster session’. Risborough Rangers Junior Football Club (RRFC), with the support of the Football Association, are planning to establish a pan-disability football group for boys and girls aged 7-11. A ‘taster session’ is organised for anyone who is interested in getting involved in this World Cup year. “We strongly feel, that in order to truly be a whole community club, the concept of inclusivity should be applied to give everyone who wants to get involved in local grassroots football and we hope to provide the opportunity for them to do so,” said Micky Baxter, RRJFC Chairman. ‘Pan-disability’ in footballing terms refers to individuals with different disabilities all participating together. It does not include those who are blind or in a wheelchair. It is those players who are not able, in the most part, to actively engage in able-bodied football. The majority of participants may, for example, have learning difficulties, are on the autistic spectrum, may have some

hearing or sight impairment, may have Downs or Tourette syndrome, dwarfism (restricted growth condition), may be an amputee with or without a prosthesis, as well as other impairments that impact on their sporting performance. “There is no doubt that participation does bring major benefits to the kids. It helps build their confidence, widens their social group, encourages positive interaction with other participants, provides physical activity, aids greater self-control and discipline. Above all it is an enjoyable learning activity!” continued Micky Baxter.

Book Reviews

Funny Girls

Barbara Streisand may have been the ‘Funny Girl’ of the silver screen, but some of these ladies have been making audiences laugh their Bridget Jones-style big pants off for years. We’ve put together a selection of books by funny women, for funny women, or just women in general…or men who want to talk about problems with hair in unwanted places, and how to walk in high heels. How to be a Woman Caitlin Moran Moran’s definitive guide to being female will tell every Miss, Mrs and Ms everything we’re supposed to be doing as we totter through life in toe-crushing heels , as well as raising all the questions we’re not supposed to ask, such as ‘do we really need to wax?’ and ‘should a sense of broodiness be in-built?’ It’s a laugh out loud book that will make you feel better about your old lady chin whiskers and your inability to get on a trampoline post kids. Billed as being ‘part memoir, part rant’ this is a laugh-outloud-funny book that will reassure the ‘fairer sex’ and educate the male population, provided the blokes can get past the chapters on puberty. Bossypants Tina Fey Hollywood star Tina Fey has a unique ability to make us feel like she could be our best friend. In fact, she wouldn’t look out of place sat at your kitchen table, looking frazzled, glass of white wine in hand, telling you about her adventures into planning her daughter’s Peter Pan-themed birthday party. Bossypants follows Tina’s rise to fame from jobbing stand-up comic, to writing sketches for Saturday Night Live. The woman whose Sarah Palin impersonation is more

PAGE 46

well- known than, well, Sarah Palin is funny, often painfully candid and incredibly self-deprecating, and you can’t help but love her for that. She gives the impression of being a woman on the edge; juggling an amazing career with her family life, and dropping a few balls along the way. Dear Fatty Dawn French National treasure Dawn French has had an amazing career as a funny girl and this memoir is written as a series of letters to people who have influenced her life. Dear Fatty is a fantastic blend of honesty, poignancy and controversy, just like the comedy actress herself. As one half of the nation’s best-loved female comedy duo, French and Saunders, she and her partner in crime redefined the roles of women in entertainment. With their sideways look at life that started with performances in Comic Strip they’ve sent up pretty much everyone in their hugely successful TV series. French tackles everything, from her career to her father’s death, and not forgetting a nation’s obsession with her size. A brilliant read. Bonkers: My Life in Laughs Jennifer Saunders We couldn’t talk about Dawn French and then not include Jennifer Saunders’ memoir, Bonkers. A self-confessed procrastinator, Saunders seems to be under the impression it’s a bit of a miracle she’s achieved anything. There’s never been a life plan she says, more a sort of stumbling from one thing to the next, but it seems to be working for her. The book follows her haphazard working life alongside fellow ‘bluffer’ French and is full of their adventures together as well as those had whilst working on her own series such as Absolutely Fabulous. Then of course, there is her battle with cancer; again, not something she had planned for. She doesn’t shy away from talking about the tough times and it seems that laughter really could be the best medicine.

Bucks ACF Want to shape the future of young people? Want to help them achieve things they never thought possible? Want to find out about being a volunteer in the Army Cadet Force? The Army Cadet Force (ACF) is one of the UK’s oldest, most successful youth organisations. Consisting of around 45,000 cadets across the country, the ACF helps young people from 12 years to develop both personally and physically by providing a range of opportunities challenges and activities. Central to the ACF are its 8,500 adults – enthusiastic and committed people who inspire youngsters to achieve their goals, whether it’s leaning to canoe or participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The ACF isn’t part of the Army. It wears uniform and operates the same rank structure, but its only linked to the Army via sponsorship. Although some

PAGE 50

cadets do eventually choose to pursue a career in the Armed Services, most do not and the ACF is not a military recruiting ground. Young people who have been in the ACF tend to be more confident, reliable, independent and purposeful. They develop leadership skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and have the opportunity to earn recognised qualifications. Being an adult volunteer brings a whole new dimension to your own life too. You don’t need military experience, but whatever personal and professional skills Cadets Sgt Dean Hammond, you do already have L/Cpl Emma Naylor, can be utilised. If you L/Cpl Gabriel Mikurenda can give up an evening and Eric Oumounabidji a week and want to do something productive and exciting with your time, this could be exactly what you are looking for.

Singing and Alzheimer’s

The Greatest Hits Choir based in High Wycombe and Thame, has known for a long time that singing was good for your health, but now it’s official! American studies have shown that singing has a positive effect on Alzheimer’s sufferers. A group of patients were divided into two groups. One group sang three times a week and the other group just listened. After four months it was found that while both groups had an improved sense of well being and mood, the group who took part in the singing had significantly improved their cognitive function.

The Greatest Hits Choir has gone from strength to strength since its inception over five years ago and now performs up to five concerts a year – mainly for local charities. They have recently featured on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Meet My Choir’ and perform regularly at the Thame Barns Centre and West Wycombe Park singing a wide variety of music from the forties to the present day, covering old favorites from pop, rock, jazz and musicals. Anyone can join the choir, members do not need to read music or have previous singing experience, just a good pair of ears! The choir also has an active social life and new members are always welcome. Term starts September 16th. For further information go to: www.greatesthitschoir.co.uk

Familiar songs from patients’ young adult years work best and are particularly effective for moderate to advanced sufferers. Musical aptitude and music appreciation are two of the last remaining abilities in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. Singing or listening to old songs can unlock memories from parts of the brain as yet untouched by the condition. Anyone can benefit from singing whatever their state of health as it can help with alertness and general wellbeing by releasing endorphins into the brain. The Greatest Hits Choir recently performed at Chiltern Grange Care Home near Stokenchurch with their leader and founder Carol Canning and hope to turn this into an annual event. Autumn Awareness for Pets

As Autumn approaches and the nights start to get a little longer your pets may enjoy making the most of the cooler weather, but there are still a few seasonal issues to be aware of. With October comes Halloween and this means trick or treating! Be aware if there is a lot of chocolate around the house to give to those in costume. Chocolate is very poisonous for dogs and can be fatal if ingested in sufficient quantities. It contains toxic theobromine and caffeine, the levels of which vary according to type and brand of chocolate but both contribute to the clinical syndrome seen with chocolate toxicity and can result in life-threatening heart arrhythmias and seizures. If you think your dog may have ingested any chocolate contact your

CROSSROADS

veterinary practice immediately for advice. Autumn is also fireworks season and this can be a very stressful time for cats and dogs. For the anxious ones it is a good idea to start desensitising them to firework noise as early as possible. There are CD’s available to help with noise phobia that gradually increase in volume and intensity to help acclimatise animals to loud noise over a period of a few weeks. In addition, there are supplements, pheromone-based sprays and medications available to help with anxiety. Contact your vet if you want to discuss using any of these. It is also important to make sure your pets have an area that they feel safe and are able to retreat to when feeling stressed.

Seventy-Five is the new Fifty?

An article from Stokenchurch Medical Centre

We often hear the expression that being seventy five years old now is equivalent to being a fifty something thirty years or more ago. Certainly, if many of us look back, then our grandparents and many parents were physically exhausted by sixty. Often the cause was physically demanding manual jobs, with poor diets and lack of exercise. They lived a sedentary retirement, experienced poor health, and many died a short time later.

Thankfully, and as many of us approach our mid/late fifties, times have changed, and larger numbers can now expect to reach a century and more. Politicians and health professionals are conscious of the larger numbers in retirement, and interventions needed to ensure this section of society is not ignored. Recently we contacted all patients who are over 75 years or approaching 75 years to inform them of whom their doctor PAGE 66

is, and the fact that they will receive regular health checks, and for the more vulnerable additional assistance in keeping them healthy and out of hospital. Whilst some many think that this is more evidence of a ‘nanny state’, we would contend that this may-be an easy opinion to hold if you are fit and well, but will that still be your opinion in ten or twenty years? Surely it is better to be proactive and get ahead of the game, and if you only need one health check per year then you are indeed ‘fit and well’. Whilst completing this important piece of work, we were also able to re-balance our doctor’s lists, and so that there is some parity with the number of patients allocated to each of our four doctors. Whilst we remain one of the few Medical Centres where you still have a named doctor, and in non-emergencies we would ask you to see that clinician, this doesn’t prevent you from seeing any doctor in times of greatest need. Finally, you may have noticed that we now release urgent appointments on the day and within 48 hrs. We have more appointments, and please don’t forget that for many ailments you can see one of our Practice Nurses. We are shortly to open one day a week at 7.00am, and one day a week we will be offering appointments up to 7.00pm to attempt to provide a better service for commuters. More details shortly on our web-site and at NHS Choices. Stokenchurch Medical Centre. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk
