Editors’ Letter Welcome to the summer issue of Chiltern View ( Villages), packed with local events, local information and fantastic local businesses. As I go around dropping off magazines to local shops, cafes and Garden Centres I often receive compliments about our front covers and I hope you will agree that our July/August cover picture is simply stunning. We are very grateful to the Chiltern Conservation Board for allowing us to use this photograph which was taken by Allen Beechey. The Adonis Blue butterfly is found in chalk downland and is only found in chalky areas like the Chilterns, the South Downs, Dorset and very few other places. You can see it on some of the local wildlife trust reserves in the Chilterns, Hartslock (near Goring) and also in the Radnage Valley near Stokenchurch. It is the most striking of all the blue butterflies and is relatively rare in the UK. We do hope that you are all able to enjoy some lovely summer sunshine during the next few months. Until next time

Aston Rowant Discovery Trail

Walk in the Footsteps of Monarchs and Highwaymen Aston Rowant Discovery Trail – a walk through some stunning Oxfordshire countryside – will open officially at 10.30 a.m. on 22nd July 2014 at Aston Rowant Church. This circular walk starts at Aston Rowant Church and extends for just over 5 miles, visiting a host of attractions including the National Trust Juniper Bank, Aston Wood, the Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve, and Talking Trail. The Discovery Trail then returns along the Ridgeway – with the option to extend the walk to take in Lewknor, The Leathern Bottel and the Lambert Arms.

The 11th century Aston Rowant church is situated on Church Lane – thought to be part of the London Weye, a route to Oxford used in the Middle Ages. The future Queen Elizabeth I passed this way in 1554 when she was released from the Tower of London and banished to country confinement in Woodstock. Walking this route will allow everyone to steep themselves in history and really let their imagination run riot. Peter Hetherington, chairman of the Aston Rowant Parish Council PAGE 8

Footpath & Amenities Group, commented “We are delighted to be launching the Discovery Trail, which will provide a walk amongst beautiful scenery, travelling in the footsteps of monarchs and highwaymen. It is fully marked with eight information boards enroute, each of which features a map showing a walker’s current location, as well as a QR code for smartphones. “We are fortunate to have received funding for this important project from a number of bodies including Grundon, the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment, Oxfordshire County Council and the Chilterns Conservation Board. We have also had a great deal of input from people who provided advice on history, flora and fauna as well as mapping experts and volunteers who gave practical help. We are certain that this Discovery Trail will be an important attraction for our area,” he concluded. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Plant of the Month

Lupin

Tall and elegant, the Lupin offers pea-like flowers in a mix of wonderful summer colours making them popular ornamental plants in garden borders. Lupins were eaten by the early Egyptians and they were introduced into northern Europe during the late eighteenth century to improve soil quality. Indeed they are super for attracting bees to the garden, who disappear into the flower and then come out with a cloak of yellow pollen. Lupins prefer well drained soil (not chalk) and need gentle care after flowering. PAGE 12

Chiltern Gateway

With acres of space and ever changing scenery that’s a haven for a whole host of wildlife, Dunstable Downs is set within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is a truly magical place to spend time. The free walk guides available from the Chilterns Gateway Centre and miles of footpaths mean that you can find somewhere different across the chalk grasslands to explore every time you visit. As you head back to the Centre for a well-earned cup of tea, the knowledgeable team are always happy to answer any questions or help identify your discoveries.

Children of all ages can let off steam in Chute Wood, a natural Playscape. Run, jump and scramble your way through the percussion and discovery areas, before exploring the nature trail and finding out who is living in the minibeast hotel. If a more relaxing visit is more your thing, head for the Chilterns Gateway Centre. Open daily from 9.30am and serving a range of hot and cold food, including the famous Bedfordshire Clanger, there’s something for everyone, whether you want a hearty lunch or an afternoon treat whilst taking in a spectacular view. Don’t forget to take home a memento of your day. From pocket money toys, to inspiration for the home and garden there’s something to suit all budgets in the shop, whether it’s as a treat for you or a gift for a friend or family member. Look out for special events too. Over the summer, Dunstable Downs will be hosting the annual Kite Festival, Eid Festival and runs family events each month. With free entry to all of the events (car parking charge applies), you can pop in for an hour, or spend the whole day.

For those feeling a little sportier, the wind-swept ridge at the highest point in Bedfordshire provides ideal conditions for a variety of air-sports - especially kite flying. If you’ve not got a kite with you, there is a vast array available to purchase, helping you on your way to filling the sky with colour.

Buying prints – Starting your Collection Buying prints is a great way for art enthusiasts to become art collectors. Prints come in a variety of types, and are most commonly produced in editions, also known as limited editions. Limited editions can be of any number. All limited editioned prints should have the number written on them on the front or the back as well as the artist’s signature. It is worth knowing that the price of editioned prints is likely to rise as fewer works remain available. So if you have your eye on a print, it’s worth getting in there early! Most galleries will stock prints by the artists that they represent, and if they are not framed on the wall, you will find them in the print rack, also known as a print browser. Some galleries specialize in prints but I prefer to show both original art and prints by the artists that I work with as I find this gives the buyer a fuller understanding of the artist’s work.

PAGE 26

Prints offer an affordable way of starting an art collection. If an edition is small, say 6, it is quite likely the starting price will be higher than something that has an edition size of say, 100. Many artists create prints to expand their customer base giving more people an opportunity to own an artwork where an original piece might be out of their price range. If a print is not part of a limited edition, it can be part of an open edition. An open edition means that the individual prints are not numbered, though most likely they are signed. There would be no record of how many prints were produced of that image. So whether you go for limited editions or open edition, prints offer an easy way to start your art collection and move from being an art enthusiast to an art collector! Recipe

Peach gallette This divine summer dessert just couldn’t be easier to make – no flan tin and no baking blind! Make sure you have a good solid baking sheet to bake the galette on as this will ensure a crisp pastry base. You can replace the fresh peaches with drained canned peaches, if liked. Serves 6 Ready in 50 minutes, plus chilling 225g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 150g unsalted butter, diced 100g ground almonds 4 tbsp caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 2 large egg yolks blended with 2 tbsp ice cold water 6 large fresh, ripe peaches, skinned, stoned and sliced Beaten egg, to glaze 1 tbsp pistachio nuts, chopped Vanilla ice cream, to serve 1 To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and using your fingertips rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in half the ground almonds and half the sugar. 2 Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolks and water. Stir with a round-bladed knife to form a crumbly dough (add a little extra cold water if the mix is too dry). Gather the mixture together with your hands and knead gently until just smooth. Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 40 minutes.

PAGE 30

3 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas mark 6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough circle about 30cm in diameter. Transfer to the baking sheet. 4 Sprinkle the rest of the ground almonds in the centre of the pastry circle, leaving a 7cm border. Arrange the peach slices on top of the almonds. Fold the pastry border inwards – just over the edges of the peach slices. 5 Brush the pastry edge with beaten egg and sprinkle over the chopped pistachios. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Sprinkle over the rest of the sugar and serve warm or cold with scoops of vanilla ice cream. TIP To skin peaches, score a cross in the skin with the tip of a knife then cover with boiling water for 1-2 minutes. Drain and cover with cold water for a further minute – the skins should peel off easily.

Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer

Summer time and the living is easy! As the weather starts to heat up it’s important to remember that cats and dogs cannot regulate their body temperature as easily as we can. They cannot shed extra layers, they sweat only from their footpads and rely mostly on panting and being able to seek shade to keep cool. Brachycephalic breeds (those with shorter noses, for example pugs), large heavy-coated breeds and those with heart or respiratory problems are at an increased risk of heat stroke as the days start to get warmer. Heat stroke can happen very quickly and its effects can be fatal. Symptoms include excessive panting, raised body temperature, dark or bright

red tongue and gums, stupor and bloody vomiting and diarrhoea. It can lead to seizures, coma and death if not discovered and treated quickly. To avoid the dangers of heat stroke, always make sure your pets have constant access to a shaded area they can move to, plenty of water available and try to avoid exercising them in the heat of the day. Never leave them unattended in the car, not even for short periods of time. Contact your vet straight away if you think your pet may be suffering from heat stroke. Even if they appear fine after having cooled down, heat can cause internal damage so it is always advisable to get them checked if they have over-heated.

0845 22 50 495 www.the50plus.co.uk By the 50plus for people of all ages

Summer The time for garden wiring writes Roger Runswick of 50plus In a number of cases recently changing an old fuse box for a new consumer unit has led to problems being discovered. It's usually a result of old wiring causing the new sensitive and safer RCDs to trip out due to an underlying fault. Sometimes the problem is an incorrectly wired appliance or extension lead. A frequent culprit is damp in garden wiring and sometimes outside lighting. And if you are unfortunate enough to have Glis-Glis (a Chilterns speciality) or other rodents inhabiting your house you should ensure you have RCDs fitted as a matter of urgency as our little friends can and do snack on cables. Which form of outside power? For external electrical fittings I recommend thinking in terms of: (i) Installing solar or low voltage lighting. Solar is usually fine for temporary e.g. security lights or decorative lighting. LED lighting is now almost as good as mains and definitely better for your pocket. (ii) Low voltage for pond power, usually 12 volts. It’s safer and cheaper to install. (iii) Mains (240 volts) for power if you must and for lighting as a last resort. Avoid underground junction boxes and keep connections accessible for servicing. PAGE 36

A short shift with the practice nurse

An article from Stokenchurch Medical Centre

Here we are mid week, so what is on offer today? I boot up the computer which as usual takes ages, tapping in several different pass words for various applications, thankfully this morning I have remembered them all. I run my eye down this morning’s list of patients. There are some familiar names, for routine medicine reviews, along with those for dressings etc. Other names I do not recognise, some have comments beside the names, this is really helpful as I can prepare equipment, etc. There are some patients who have very little information and my first patient is one of these. My computer lets me know this young lady has checked in using our self check in system, although not everyone gets the hang of this new technology. The less confident queue for the receptionist who is also trying to answer the phone, find prescriptions, and other paper work along with helping a mother who is asking where she can change a nappy and a toddler who is desperate for a ‘pee,pee..’ I certainly do not envy them their job! So here is my first customer, a 10 minute appointment but I have no idea as to why she has come to see me. “Good morning Mary, what can I do for you?” I ask. She tells me she is going to have a gap year and is off to see the world, and she is going next week! My heart sinks; pity she has not completed a pre travel form. So I have no idea where she aims

PAGE 38

to go, what immunisations she has had, if she needs malaria tablets, will we have the relevant immunisations in stock? But she is away next week! So the questioning begins, she is starting in Thailand, moving onto Australia and then over to South America. Oh corks! This girl needs the lot! Within a 10 minute appointment I need to give her 4 immunisations, record these in her notes. This takes ages as I have to record batch numbers and decide which arm to inject into. I also need to discuss malaria and get a prescription for tablets, talk about keeping herself safe from illnesses and other physical things I cannot protect her from. I feel unhappy about this consultation, I have only brushed through all the things this girl needed to know, I hope she has taken my brief advice seriously and will visit the web sites I have given her. At least she did come and see me before her great adventure! Why, I ask myself, do people of all ages decide to trot off without considering that they may need health advice? Oh well that was a good start to my morning! I am now running 15 minutes late. Call for the next customer.

The world’s biggest tribute band and the world’s oldest independent record label will be among those helping Towersey Festival celebrate its 50th birthday this August. Debuting way back in 1965 – the year that also gave us Thunderbirds, 007’s Thunderball and Julie Andrews in The Sound Of Music Towersey has since established itself as one of the UK’s most loved annual music festivals. Running over five days, 2014’s festival is officially opened by The Bootleg Beatles on Thursday 21 August, who’ll be performing hits from across the Fab Four’s career. Famed for their attention to detail, the ‘Fake Fabs’ have been dressed by The Beatles’ own tailor, while right-handed ‘Fake Paul’ even taught himself to play bass guitar left-handed, to mimic Paul McCartney. They’ll be followed over the long August Bank Holiday weekend by performances from legendary folk/rock guitarist Richard Thompson, Mercury Prize nominee Seth Lakeman, the multi-BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winning Lau, and a one-off, guest-star filled concert led by Eliza Carthy to mark the 75th anniversary of seminal independent record label, Topic Records. Other acts set to appear at the festival include Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy, Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker, Georgia Ruth, Dick Gaughan, John Smith, Nancy Kerr and James Fagan and The Urban Folk Quartet.

PAGE 40

But the main-stage music is just part of Towersey’s appeal, as elsewhere the festival hosts music, dance and craft workshops, early morning yoga, family film screenings, storytelling, and much more. The ever popular Showground offers a taster of what the full festival has to offer with circus skills workshops, street theatre performances, roaming artists, stories, dancers from around the world, and family-friendly fun. There’s also a rolling programme of top bands and musicians performing on the Showground Bar Stage courtesy of leading local promoters The First Thursday Music Club, Musically Monstrous, Charlbury Riverside Festival and Crash Records. If it’s retail you want, check out the stalls, selling crafts, instruments, clothes and gifts, as well as a mouth-watering array of food and drink, from noodles and nachos to chips and cakes, from premium coffees to artisan beers and ciders. Showground-only tickets cost just £8 (adult), £3 (60+, conc, 5-17yrs), with under 5s free. Tickets for the full five-day festival start from £135 (adult), £55 (youth), with under 5s free. Camping tickets also available. Festival day tickets (Fri-Mon) £10-£40. Car parking free. For further information and to book tickets, call 023 8071 1818 or see: www.towerseyfestival.com Special Offer: If you live in Thame or Towersey, adult Resident Season Tickets are available for the entire festival for just £70. That’s nearly half-price! These tickets are available only by calling 01629 827016.

Dog of the Month Kat Hi, my name is Kat, I am a 7 year old American Bull Dog type. I am a shy girl and I find kennel life difficult so would love a new home to call my own. I am very gentle despite my size and I already know some tricks such as sit, paw, other paw, high 5 and down. I used to live with male dogs so subject to a meet I may be able to live with a calm male. I am currently on a diet so my new owners will have to help me lose the extra weight I am currently carrying. I would like a quiet, calm home without cats (as I like to chase them!) and where

any children are aged 14 years and over. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm.

Book Review

Time

They say that time flies when you’re having fun, but anyone under the age of 18 who has a seemingly endless summer holiday stretching ahead of them is going to be praying that isn’t the case. Whether you’re spending the summer behind a desk or in a deckchair, these timely titles will certainly make the minutes and hours pass you by, almost in an instant. The Time Traveler’s Wife Audrey Niffenegger Art student Claire first met librarian Henry when she was six and he was thirty-one, and then again when she was twenty-three and he was thirty-one. Henry has ChronoDisplacement Disorder and so lives out his bizarre life leaping between time and space, his ‘clock’ continually resetting, meaning Claire has no idea where or more specifically, when, the love of her life will reappear again. Though constantly torn apart and then thrown back together again, they try and hold onto some semblance of a normal life; raising their child and holding onto the fact that they found each other at all. It’s a fantastic and heart-wrenching book that will leave you hoping that somehow and somewhere you will be able to catch up with Claire and Henry once again. A Tale for the Time Being Ruth Ozeki A teenage girl in Tokyo plans to take her own life. Nao is suffering at the hands of bullies, but before she ends it she needs to finish writing the story of her great grandmother, an ancient Buddhist nun. When a Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on a beach in PAGE 46

British Columbia, novelist Ruth finds Nao’s diary, and a new obsession. She believes it to be debris left over from the Japanese tsunami of 2011 and is determined to find out how both Nao and her great grandmother’s stories end. This is a remarkable story linking three women across time and continents. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Mark Haddon Chris doesn’t make for the most likely of detectives in this ‘whodunit’. He’s fifteen years old and he has Asperger’s Syndrome. He likes facts and order, routine and mathematics. He finds social interaction and other human beings an absolute minefield to negotiate. When Chris finds his neighbour’s dog has been murdered he must rise to the challenges that life has thrown to him and take himself out of his comfort zone. The story has been published in a version for adults and another for children and isn’t, says Haddon, a book about Asperger’s. It’s a story about what it’s like to be on the outside looking in; how different and isolated we can all feel and how varied the human mind is in interpreting what’s going on around us. The Time Machine H.G. Wells Long before Doctor Who started fighting Daleks and regenerating, H.G. Wells gave the world his view of the future, through the eyes of a Victorian scientist. The Time Traveller (we never learn his real name) invents a time machine that sends him to the year 802,701AD and discovers a peaceful people called the Eloi. But these descendants of man live lives of unspoken terror. When he scratches beneath the surface of this apparent utopia, our time traveller discovers another race: Morlocks. These terrifying tunnel-dwellers are not to be messed with and the time traveller must escape post-haste…if only he can relocate his missing time machine. On Your Plot

Start them young I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious! Jobs for July Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). Remember to feed your tomatoes. As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder. Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own? While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings PAGE 62

perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

Health

Have a Healthy Holiday You’ve booked the perfect holiday in the ideal destination. In your dreams you’re already there, sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxing with a good book - but it could turn into a nightmare unless you ensure you’ve got your holiday health covered beforehand. Holidaying in the UK If you’re holidaying in the UK, everything is familiar, but still arrange travel insurance in case an accident or illness means your holiday is cancelled. If you’re going off the beaten track or hill climbing, check the weather forecast, wear appropriate footwear and take your mobile (fully charged), warm waterproof clothing, a first aid kit and a map. Ensure everyone knows the route and remember you’ll be slower over rough terrain. Many fatalities are caused by ignoring these precautions. Check your chosen beach is safe for swimming, with no concealed rocks or dangerous sea creatures. Holidaying Abroad Several weeks beforehand, read guidebooks, travel company information and specific precautions for your destination at http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk. Ensure you’re aware of: • Air travel health and safety Newborn babies, women over 36 weeks pregnant (32 weeks in multiple pregnancy), or people who have recently had a stroke, heart attack, surgery or trauma shouldn’t fly, nor should those with a communicable disease or certain conditions affecting the ears, chest, head or cardiovascular system. See your doctor and check insurance t&cs. The air inside aeroplanes is very dry, so stay hydrated and avoid alcohol, (altitude increases its effects). Ask your doctor’s advice if you’re concerned about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or you’ve given birth in the last two months. Reduce the risk of DVT by walking, stretching, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and keeping well hydrated. Compression stockings can help if worn correctly. • Local laws and customs Beware different traffic signals and different laws particularly about standards of dress. • Food and water safety Practice good hygiene and pack sanitizer gel or wipes. If you’re unsure of water safety, boil it or treat it with purification tablets, or use bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. Avoid ice cubes. PAGE 66

Choose well-cooked, freshly prepared food and avoid salads, shellfish, unpeeled fruit and ice-cream (unless it’s a major brand). • Health precautions If there’s a malaria risk don’t take it lightly. Use repellents on exposed skin and repellents and/or insecticides around your room and on mosquito screens and clothing (mosquitoes may bite through it). Wear long trousers and long-sleeved tops, particularly after dark. Anti-malarial tablets must be started before you go and continued after you return. Take a supply of diarrhoea medication so it’s close by if needed. • Vaccinations Again, requirements depend on destination – check specific guidelines at http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before travel as some vaccinations are in several doses. Carry proof of vaccinations; some countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) should be free, but you’ll pay for yellow fever, encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, tuberculosis and hepatitis B. • Rules about prescribed medication Take a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s letter including personal details, travel dates and medication details. • Healthcare entitlements If you’re travelling to Switzerland or a country in the European Economic Area (EEA), apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance) card entitling you to healthcare equivalent to that provided for residents. Outside the EEA, medical care must be covered by your insurance. • Sun Protection Wear a hat and sunglasses, avoid midday sun, stay hydrated and apply high factor sun lotion regularly. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

Famous People of the Chilterns:

Henry VIII & Elizabeth I

Both of these famous Tudor monarchs often travelled through the English countryside, staying in the grand houses of noblemen and aristocrats, and they clearly loved to include the Chilterns in their courtly progress. Queen Elizabeth I came in great splendour to the village of Bradenham, near High Wycombe, in 1566, staying overnight at Hampden House at Great Hampden. The onward route saw the royal party emerging onto the ridge at Walter’s Ash, descending to Bradenham through the woodland glade which survives today. From here Her Majesty set forth to High Wycombe with a large party of gentlemen for protection against thieves infesting the ‘primeval forest’. In contrast to its genteel image today, several hundred years ago the Chilterns countryside had a bad reputation, its dense woodlands believed to be the hangout of many a fugitive from the law and other similar n’er-do-wells. Before it became gentrified with large country estates created by the wealthy seeking respite from London, those who decided to travel through the area had to be prepared for possible attack from highwaymen lurking in the woods. The royals with their large retinues probably felt they had enough safety in numbers to risk it! Both Henry and Elizabeth were entertained at picturesque Chenies Manor near Amersham, then home to the Russell family, the Earls of Bedford. Chenies Manor and gardens Perhaps they were careless guests as they seemed to leave a few possessions behind. The effects of the 2nd Earl included a crimson silk quilt owned by Henry VIII, valued at £36. In her turn, Elizabeth visited several times. An entry in a wardrobe book shows that in 1570, whilst sitting beneath an ancient oak which you can still see in the lovely manor gardens, she lost some tiny gold ‘aglet’ decorations from her gown. PAGE 68

Always acquisitive, Henry VIII owned and visited a royal palace in the delightful Oxfordshire village of Ewelme. This passed to Elizabeth, who came here on several occasions. Other royal properties in the Chilterns also changed hands. Anne of Cleeves received the manor at Bisham Abbey in her divorce settlement and Mary Tudor imprisoned the Princess Elizabeth here. Henry gave Berkhamsted Castle in turn to his first three wives: Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour. Elizabeth later rented it to her Keeper of the Queen’s Jewels for the nominal payment of one red rose. The palace in Ewelme is no more but you can walk in the footsteps of Henry and Elizabeth at Chenies Manor House which is open to the public: www.cheniesmanorhouse.co.uk. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
