Editors’ Letter Welcome to the Sept/ Oct issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine. The big calendar event in Risborough for September has to be the Kop Hill Climb, which takes place on the weekend of the 17th and 18th. We do hope you enjoy the front cover which we chose especially, as we felt it tied in with the 60’s theme that they have this year. It will be another excellent couple of days and well worth going along. (see page 46). The following weekend is the very popular Food Festival in Thame. This year it takes place on Saturday 24th September and, for all you budding bakers, there is a very exciting Bake Off competition. (see page 40).
For those of you who have enjoyed watching the Olympics (at the point of writing this Great Britain have made a great start, so fingers crossed for more medals!), don’t forget to support our amazing Paralympians taking part in the Paralympic Games between September 7th and 19th. Our colleague Lacey has put together some more information for you about our local athletes on page 16. We do hope that those of you who are making the big transitions between primary and secondary school, school and work, or school and university haven’t found it too stressful and you are excited about the journey ahead.
Until the next time...

Vet’s Corner
Feeding rabbits the correct type and amount of food is important for their health. Rabbits’ teeth grow throughout their life, so they need to wear them down or they risk suffering from dental problems such as uneven teeth, with spurs that can damage the mouth. To properly wear their teeth, their diet should consist of at least 80% good quality hay or grasses. As well as maintaining healthy teeth, rabbits need this fibre to keep their gut moving and
working properly. They need constant access to hay as, unlike dogs and cats, their guts cannot cope with periods of starvation. Rabbits should also be offered fresh, green, leafy vegetables and herbs daily. Dry food and treats (such as fruit) should make up the minority of their food. Pellets are preferred over museli-style diets as these encourage selective eating, where the rabbit preferentially eats high starch components over high fibre ones. This leads to an unbalanced diet and a decrease in hay and water intake. If you are unsure what to feed your rabbit please contact our nurses.

Headteacher: Mr A White
Looking for an outstanding school who believes every child can be successful? Stokenchurch Primary is an outstanding school and has been graded as such at two consecutive Ofsted inspections in 2008 and in 2013. We strive to create within each child a feeling for Stokenchurch Primary School whereby he/she will attend eagerly, leave with regret and remember with pride.
‘This very large primary school has established a warm family atmosphere where pupils thrive and develop outstanding behaviour and attitudes. They show respect to everyone and know how to stay safe…each pupil is known and valued as an individual. This is the basis for the very high expectations demonstrated across every aspect of school life.’ Ofsted 2013 Our ethos at the heart of all we do All-round personal development is a well-established feature of the school helping pupils to grow in confidence, whether in learning or in the many excellent opportunities to take on leadership roles, as with the very active school council, prefect and house captain roles and more recent introduction of head boy and head girl posts. Learning through performance – stretching horizons alongside achieving academic excellence ‘Achievement at Stokenchurch is outstanding. Pupils make rapid progress from their starting points, and attain high standards.’ Ofsted 2013 Underpinning pupil achievement we passionately believe in providing a ‘stage’ for pupils (all of whom we believe are talented) to emerge and grow and gain in confidence and stature. ‘The very rich and exciting curriculum (both within the school day and beyond) provides outstanding opportunities for pupils to experience learning in real-life situations and to develop confidence by being involved in prestigious events.’ Ofsted 2013 Why not come along and see for yourself ….

We’re now coming into bulb season Autumn is the time to plant Spring flowering bulbs. Most gardeners think of Daffodils , Tulips and perhaps Crocus as the one to plant and certainly these varieties are rightly popular, but there are a number of lesser known bulbs that can be planted now to give you a splash of colour next Spring . The Allium family are an excellent choice, the bigger varieties such as Giganteum, Gladiator and Mount Everest reach up to 140cm, so these are tall plants, ideal for the rear of the border, the smaller Alliums , Roseum , Scubertii and Christophii will remain at a compact 50cm. If you have a semi shady spot, beneath shrubs or deciduous trees, go for the Anenome family. These bulbs will soon naturalise, and in a few years, just a small number of bulbs will fill out to give you bright swathes of colour. The Blanda variety (blues and whites) are a neat 15cm, whilst De Caen are a tad taller, around 25cm. Chionodoxa, also known as glory of the snow, is a good 36
alternative to Crocus. Small, just 10cm high, in pink, white and blue, they flower early, often the first bulb to poke their heads up in February.
The smaller Fritillarias, known as Snakes-head, are another cup of tea entirley. Snakeshead are smaller, delicate plants around 20cm high, a really excellent choice.
One of my favourite bulbs is Erythronium, or Dog’s Tooth. A great choice if you want some ground cover, the most striking variety is Pagoda. Best in partial shade and rich well fed compost, to get the best from Pagoda, do make sure they don’t get baked by the sun during the Summer.
Our selection of bulbs will be ready from the end of August, and you can happily plant right up to the end of November. Along with bulbs, this is the time for your winter pansies, violas, wallflowers and primroses, so get these in too before the Winter takes hold.
For something big and bold, go for Fritillaria Imperialis. These are big bulbs that produce large showy orange and yellow flowers that smell of coffee.

Health Matters
What stress is doing to our bodies?
Stress is a combination of responses in the body. Stress can be short-term (acute) or chronic. Occasional stress is normal. Once you’ve handled the situation, the stress goes away and you heal from the episode. But, if stressors accumulate over time, eventually the body becomes inefficient at handling even minimal stress. The brain, heart, lungs, vessels, and muscles become so chronically over or under activated that they become damaged. Research has shown that prolonged stress can produce actual tissue changes and organ dysfunction.
Studies demonstrate that our emotions are not just in our mind, they are in every cell of our bodies. Physical stress can lead to mental & emotional stress. When muscles are taut and tense for long periods of time, this may trigger other reactions of the body and even promote stress-related disorders. For example, both tensiontype headache and migraine headache are associated with chronic muscle tension, in the area of the shoulders, neck and head.
Over time, you may stop exercising and turn to pain medication, setting off an unhealthy cycle. Stress can be insidious; working its way into our lives before we are aware of the consequences. You need not be a victim to chronic stress, it is important to understand the choices, in your ability to respond to feelings. There are many techniques for managing stress, such as exercising, tissue treatment and using relaxation techniques. To learn practically about how your lifestyle may be affecting your health, inside and out, book a consultation with your Osteopath today.

Autumn Reads
Whether you’re time traveling back to the middle ages, or just revisiting the sixties, historical fiction is a great way to escape the present for a few hours. The Muse Jessie Burton
Susan Fletcher
Burton’s The Miniaturist was one of 2014’s bestsellers, and personally I think her latest novel is even better. West Indian-born Odelle lands a job at a London art institute in 1967. Her friend, Lawrie, has a painting he thinks the institute might be interested in, but Odelle’s boss seems to know more about the picture than she’s willing to admit. Back in 1936, Olive is attempting to hide her artistic talents from her father, while building a life for herself in Spain. A brilliant portrayal of forging one’s identity in a foreign country.
Jeanne Trabuc is a dutiful wife and mother, but her sons have left home and the boredom and loneliness of life in rural Provence in the 1880s are settling over her in a quiet depression. So when a new patient arrives at the asylum that her husband runs, Jeanne can’t resist reaching out to him. An artist, with wild red hair, self-mutilated ear and attitude so different to anyone she knows, he has the power to reawaken the spark within Jeanne that she’s subdued for so long. A beautiful, fictional reimagining of Vincent Van Gogh’s time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole institution.
The Harrowing James Aitcheson
It’s 1066 and a Norman army is marching through England, destroying anyone and anything in their path. Five travellers are fleeing to the last Saxon stronghold, but will they reach it in time, and is it just the Normans they’re running from? There’s action scenes aplenty, interspersed with the individual stories of the five travellers – a servant, a lady, a priest, a warrior and a minstrel. Aitcheson has clearly done his homework on this era, and also manages to create characters that are every bit as human and flawed as their modern-day counterparts. 42
Let Me Tell You About A Man I Knew
Stolen Years Kazia Myers
It’s 1940 and Poland is under occupation. Seventeen year old Anna is forced to leave her home near Krakow to work on an Austrian farm, where she is little more than a slave. But she finds solace, friendship and love amongst her fellow workers, even as the situation they find themselves in becomes progressively harder. The author’s parents were Polish refugees and survivors of Stalin’s labour camps, and this personal connection certainly comes across in this poignant tale.
The Farm at the Edge of the World Sarah Vaughan
Will and Alice are evacuated to a Cornish farm to escape war-torn London. There they find safety, although it’s not the picturepostcard life they may have imagined. Friendship between Will and the farmer’s daughter Maggie blossoms into love, but a lie will change things between the three forever. Seventy years on, Alice wants to atone, but is it too late to make amends? An enjoyable story of love, friendship and how sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.
The Plague Charmer Karen Maitland
It’s 1361 and plague is once more stealing through England. In its wake is an even deadlier curse – fear. As neighbours turn against each other and hysteria sweeps the nation, can Sara protect her family? Up in the manor house, 16 year old Christina and her secret baby are hiding from the world, waiting to see whether her abusive husband will come home from France and claim the child. With a long cast of characters, and plenty of plot twists and turns, The Plague Charmer could well stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Kop Hill Climb
17-18 Sep 2016
The historic hill climb event, with so much for everyone! With seven amazingly successful years already experienced, the Kop Hill team of hundreds of volunteers are back on 17th and 18th September to bring you the eighth revival of the early 1900’s motoring event. The action takes place at Kop Hill in Princes Risborough, and all the fun, thrills and hard work contribute to raise funds for local charities and good causes on behalf of Heart of Bucks. Last year was a record breaker, with £78,000 being raised over the weekend. The event returns with a celebration of the 60’s and over 400 historic cars and motorcycles each day taking on the famous hill. Many more will be on display in the Paddock. Vehicles range in age from the early 1900’s to modern day exotics, so there will be something for everyone. This is not just a static display, but also a recreation of Kop Hill’s glorious past. Both days will have morning and afternoon sessions where you can see the cars and motorcycles storming the hill. Moving history right before your eyes, especially from one of the Grandstands, which gives a unique vantage point. The children’s area will be packed with things to see and do. A vintage steam fair, with helter-skelter and dodgems, Punch and Judy show and circus skills workshop along with the Racing Bug track racing game will give young and not so young plenty to experience. 46
The Soapbox Challenge is a nail-biting competition, with teams of budding racers aged 10 to 17 trying to go the greatest distance down the purpose built ramp, chicane and obstacles to try and win the Beaumont Cup. With so many things to see and do a break for some food and drink will definitely be in order. So relax in the food court while taking in the sounds of the stage with a fantastic line up this year, including Halton Military Wives Choir, Rockin Rebels, The Loops and G-Elvis. Your toes will be tapping to the Sound Force Big Band and popular local group Bustin’ Loose will close the show each day. If you would like to volunteer your time to help over the weekend or for full event details please go to www.kophillclimb.org.uk Advance tickets now available via the website and Princes Risborough Information Centre in the Library. Entry tickets: Adult £10 one day £15 for weekend. Under 18’s £5 one day £7.50 weekend. Children under 5 go free. Grandstand tickets: £5 per half-day session. Entry ticket must also be purchased. Parking is free. Spectator gates open at 9.00am each day. Kop Hill runs from 9.45am to 1.00pm and 2.00pm to 5.15pm each day.

Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most journeys cost only £1.50 or 50p for children and most concessionary passes are accepted. Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating.
Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages.
Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently. We make the bus available for use by non-profit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest.
