Editors’ Letter Welcome to the July / August issue of Chiltern View Thame magazine. We do hope you enjoy our fun, festival themed cover which of course is to promote the Towersey Festival taking place from the 26th to the 29th August. There is a fantastic line up of bands and activities so why not go along for the day or even the weekend. All details can be found on pages 32 & 33. We have our usual Thame Players competition, plus they are putting on a very exciting Open-Air play (page 8). If you haven’t managed to organise that holiday yet, then why not pop down to Spear Travels and book that last minute getaway (page 16). The Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir are looking for new members, so give them a call if you have a voice that deserves to be heard in public and not just in the shower! (page 28). Lastly, don’t forget the Princes Risborough Annual Town Festival 4th – 9th July. By the time you read this, Euro ‘16 will be heading for the final and Wimbledon will be underway, but the Olympics are also something to get excited about and we would like to wish our local athletes taking part every success (page 30). School will be over for the summer so we wish everyone a lovely break with sunny weather, and for those who have taken exams, the best of luck with your results. Until the next time

Thame Players Shows in July Open Air Theatre: Macbeth In July Thame Players are staging an open-air Macbeth marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Set in eleventh-century Scotland the play will keep the audience on tenterhooks, complete with witchcraft and villainy.
Macbeth will be performed in the gardens at 32 The Elms, Upper High Street, Thame OX9 2DN from Tuesday 5th – Saturday 9th July, with performances at 7.45 pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30 pm (doors open from 6.15 pm daily and from 1.00 pm on Saturday). Tickets cost £10 and £9 (concessions) from Spear Travels, telephone 01844 217228, or book online at www.thameplayers.co.uk
There will be undercover seating and marquees for audiences, so rain won’t be a problem. Bring a picnic or enjoy refreshments, including beer, wines, soft drinks, tea or coffee. Local caterer Kirsty’s Kitchen will provide food or pre-order a picnic on 01844 202685 or email kirstyskitchen@gmail.com.
The House of Bernarda Alba by F G Lorca Then, in September we have a play of love, jealousy and spite in rural Spain. Set in a village in rural Andalusia in the early 1930s the funeral of Bernarda’s second husband has just taken place and she insists that her five daughters observe a long period of mourning, but her youngest one, Adela, who is 20, rebels. This beautifully written play explores the themes of oppression of women, tradition and class prejudice.
Thame Players are very grateful for sponsorship, including Rectory Homes and others.
Competition Time!
To win two tickets to see any Thame Player show in 2016 simply answer the following question.
What won’t be a problem in Macbeth? Email your answer to: Steph at thameview@live.co.uk by Thursday 25th August 2016

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Thame & surrounding areas and
manager James Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give James a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

What’s Cooking in summer? This recipe really does say “summer on a plate and is one of our most popular salads. Choose firm peaches or nectarines and look out for barrel aged feta cheese if you can find it.
Grilled Peaches, Aged Feta & Walnuts Serves 6 as a
light lunch with soft focaccia bread to mop up the juices.
Ingredients: 6 x peaches or nectarines 2 tablespoons extra virgin rapeseed oil 200gr feta cheese 100gr rocket leaves 50gr walnut halves, lightly toasted 10gr large basil leaves Clear honey Maldon sea salt Coarse ground black pepper 20
Method: 1.
Cut the peaches in half and remove the stones. Cut each half into three wedges. Heat a ridged griddle pan until very hot. Place the peach wedges onto the ridges and cook for about 1 minute on both sides. The aim here is to achieve nice grill lines on the peaches. Remove the peaches and mix with the oil and season with salt and pepper. Allow to cool.
2.
Starting with a large plate or platter, scatter over half the rocket leaves. Then dot about half the basil leaves. Scatter half the peach wedges, half the walnuts and half the feta over the plate. Try to break the feta into pieces rather than cut with a knife. Drizzle some honey over and season with salt and pepper. Repeat with the rest of the ingredients and serve straight away!

Summer Reads There are few things better than relaxing on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your summer reads, we have plenty to tempt you with this month. Flawed – Cecelia Ahern A book which examines the idea of perfection, Flawed focuses on Celestine, who lives in a world where nothing less than perfection will be tolerated. Infractions come with a high penalty – offenders are branded as ‘ awed’ and become second class citizens, for life. Celestine knows how to play the game, but a moment of compassion towards one of the awed has dire consequences. Celestine could now be branded herself. Bestselling author Cecelia Ahern has delivered another cracker. This one’s aimed at a young adult market, but de nitely has crossover appeal. Best British Short Stories 2016 – edited by Nicholas Royle Now in its sixth year, this annual anthology brings together some of the best ction from British writers published over the last 12 months. Editor Nicholas Royle has scoured the market, including other anthologies, magazines, newspapers and websites, to nd this year’s selection. With a wide range of genres and voices, and a satisfying mix of authors, Best British Short Stories may well introduce you to a new favourite writer. The Hanging Club – Tony Parsons There’s a band of vigilantes on the loose in London. With victims including a paedophile and a hate preacher, the killers are seen by many as heroes – delivering justice where the law has failed. But it’s DC Max Wolfe’s job to stop them. This is the third of Parsons’ books to feature DC Max Wolfe, and could well be his best yet. Ideal for fans of Lee Child and Patricia Cornwall, along with anyone else who loves a good crime novel, The 26
Hanging Club will leave you questioning your own moral code. Gripping. My Name is Leon – Kit de Waal When nine year old Leon gets taken away from his mum, he thinks that’s as bad as it can get. But Leon’s little brother, Jake, is young enough to be adopted. Battling with grief for the loss of his brother, Leon nds an unlikely group of friends at his local allotments. However, this is the early eighties, racial tension is high and Leon is determined to nd Jake, whatever the cost. This is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ books you’ll keep reading until the sun has gone down and the tears have left tracks down your cheeks. The Museum of You – Carys Bray Single dad Darren Quinn’s priority is his daughter’s happiness. But what twelve year old Clover wants most is the one thing that causes Darren the most pain – the story of her mother. So Clover has decided that this summer she’ll find her own answers. Rich in description and dialogue, with endearing, believable characters, this is a very enjoyable book to while away those summer evenings. The Sudden Appearance of Hope – Claire North No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

ROMEO UPDATE
Romeo is nearly 18 months old now and has started his advanced training.
on the bed and has cuddles.” Our deaf recipients say this is a lovely way to be woken up!
He lives with volunteers Dianne and Lee in Selby, in Yorkshire, and is visited every day by his trainer, Helen. Dianne and Lee love Romeo! “Romeo is our first dog as volunteers”, says Dianne. “He has such a sweet but cheeky nature and is an absolute joy to be with.” Helen says his quick nature helps him learn. “He masters new sounds very quickly. When he hears the alarm clock, he jumps
Romeo is also learning his ‘alert’. This is how he tells people about sounds. He goes to Helen and gives her a little nose-nudge. She gives the sign for ‘What is it?’, and Romeo leads her to the door. Romeo thinks this is all a fun game. However, one day his training will help him change a deaf person’s life. Romeo’s next step is matching him with a deaf recipient. We put a lot of time and thought into this. We take many factors into account, such as the dog’s
character, the recipient’s lifestyle, the size of the house and so on. It’s all about doing the best thing for dog and recipient alike. We’re really pleased with Romeo’s progress. Like his Shakespearean namesake, everyone falls for him! From all of us at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, thank you for supporting him.

Olympics
London 2012, who can forget the pride and passion shown by so many people all over the county.
Great Britain hosted a wonderful Olympic Games, which showcased the country wonderfully. Behind the scenes, the athletes and their support teams are working hard to ensure that they are in prime condition to do themselves and their country proud. Did you know that one of the bases for the Olympic and Paralympic athletes is in the Chilterns? Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre is home to the Great Britain Women’s and Men’s Hockey Squad, GB Canoeing, GB Women’s Rugby 7s, and is also a training centre for GB Rowing and GB Para Rowing, along with other ad hoc Paralympic and Olympic athletes. Local athlete, Clare Griffiths (nee Strange) has been named in the GB Wheelchair Basketball Squad. This
will be Clare’s 5th Paralympics which is quite a feat. With final teams still in the process of being named, we would like to wish every athlete the very best success this summer. If you’re inspired by Rio 2016, keep an eye on our Facebook (www.facebook. com/chilternview) and Twitter (@chilterndirect) where you can find out how to try different sports and activities!

All About Children
The Wonder Stuff
Four chart-toppers are among the line-up for this year’s Towersey Festival – the perfect end to a perfect summer. Returning to Thame Showground over August Bank Holiday, the four-day festival features appearances from Billy Bragg, The Wonder Stuff, Midge Ure and Nizlopi – all of whom have scored number one singles. They’re joined by folk doyenne Kate Rusby, the highly entertaining (and much imitated) Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain, musicians/ broadcasters Tom Robinson (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Nell Bryden (BBC Radio 2), The ONE Show’s Andy Kershaw, Welsh stars 9Bach, and The Young’uns – who recently picked up the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Group for the second year running. With a career that’s rooted in punk, folk, blues, country and soul, Billy Bragg hit number one in ‘88 with a cover of The Beatles She’s Leaving Home. His forthcoming new album, Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad, sees the troubadour perform a series of railway themed tunes recorded at rail stops across the US.
Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain
The Wonder Stuff visit Towersey as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations. Twenty-five years after Dizzy (with Vic Reeves) went to number 1, their new album, 30 Goes Round The Sun, has seen the Midlanders back in the charts for the first time this millennium! Midge Ure’s career is littered with huge hits, from Ultravox and Visage, to Thin Lizzy and Band Aid, via his own solo career – so expect some real surprises at Towersey from a master musician and songwriter. The festival’s fourth charttopper is duo Nizlopi. Cited as a major inspiration by Ed Sheeren, their 2005 No.1, JCB Song, oozes charm.

Vet’s Corner
At this time of year many rabbits are spending all or most of their time outside, often enjoying a bit more freedom than over winter! Even if all seems well, it is very important to check bunnies at least once a day (ideally more often) for signs of fly strike - a serious condition where green- or bluebottle flies lay eggs on the rabbit which hatch into maggots. Some species can only affect already
damaged skin but others can attack normal healthy tissues. Large amounts of damage can quickly occur, even to internal organs, and shock quickly sets in. Flies are mostly attracted to old, ill or dirty animals, so it is important to keep rabbits clean and dry. Any eggs seen should be removed as they can hatch within a day. Besides regularly checking all animals, and ensuring that they live in clean, dry conditions, there are products that can be used to repel flies/kill maggots – please ask your vet for more information. Rabbits seem most at risk but any animal can be affected.
If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz & Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Aurelia Verdin BVetMed MRCVS
