Editors’ Letter Welcome to the September / October issue of Chiltern View Thame magazine. One of the big events this September in Thame’s calendar, is the Food Festival. Taking place this year on Saturday 24th September, it promises to be another fantastic day. For all you budding bakers, there is the opportunity to take part in the Bake Off competition, more details about this on page 8. Brand new for this year is the Thame Horse and Country Show, taking place on Thursday 15th September at Thame Showground, Kingsey Road. There will be an extensive programme of events during the day, with classes taking place between 8am and 6pm and, best of all, it will be free to the general public. For more details, go to the website www.thamehorsecountrys.wix.com/home. Another exciting event in September is the Kop Hill Climb in Risborough, which takes place over the weekend of the 17th and 18th, and promises to be an excellent couple of days, with the theme this year of the 60’s. For more details, check out our website www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk. For those of you who have enjoyed watching the Olympics (at the point of writing this Great Britain have made a good start, so fingers crossed for more medals!), don’t forget to support our amazing Paralympians taking part in the Paralympic Games between September 7th and 19th. We do hope that those of you who are making the big transitions between primary and secondary school, school and work, or school and university haven’t found it too stressful and are excited about the journey ahead. Until the next time

Are you Thame’s best baker? Oxfordshire’s cake king or queen? Natalie Coleman is looking after the children’s category and Will Torrent - chocolate man extraordinaire is in charge of the… chocolate cakes!

The SECOND Big Thame Bake is now calling for entries, and we want YOU to rise to the occasion for local good causes. Whatever your baking skill or age, there’s a category to charge your imagination. AND… we’ve got some fabulous prizes lined up too. Not only are there prizes to be won but also the chance to meet some of the biggest names in the world of baking, including Great British Bake Off’s Miranda Gore-Brown, Chetna Makan and Richard Burr. All the way from Bath - bread legend Richard Bertinet will be judging, alongside Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons’ gents Benoit Blin, Adam Johnson and Mark Peregrin.

We’d love local businesses to take part too – from pubs to estate agents – hairdressers to florists - we want to see just how competitive you really are. Don’t delay - have a look at the fabulous categories here: www. thamefoodfestival.co.uk/the-bigthame-bake-categories-2016/ All of the money raised will be split between a donation to the Thame Food Bank and to help ensure that Thame Food Festival can continue running for another year.

Your cake really will make a difference. PATRON LOTTE DUNCAN SAYS: ‘If more people in this world made and ate cake, there really would be less trouble and war. Surely politicians wouldn’t make so many silly decisions if they had a nice Victoria Sponge in front of them. It really is the answer to Happiness and World Peace!’ So come on you fabulous local bakers - join in The Big Thame Bake! For inspiration and cake photographs from last year, please visit www. thamefoodfestival.co.uk/thebig-thame-bake-judging/

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Thame & surrounding areas and

manager James Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give James a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

What’s Cooking in summer? One of our most popular sweet treats at What’s Cooking is our homemade chocolate tiffin. We use top quality Cocoa Powder, which makes all the difference, Green & Black’s is the best cocoa available in the supermarkets. We make this recipe in a square dish measuring 25cm x 25cm x 5cm and cut it into 16 pieces but you could use one half the size, just remember to halve the recipe.

Chocolate Tiffin Ingredients: 800gr Digestive Biscuits 200gr Raisins 500gr Unsalted Butter 270gr Golden Syrup 125gr Cocoa Powder

Method: 1.

Line your dish with greaseproof paper.

2.

Break the biscuits into small pieces. Place in a bowl and add the raisins.

3.

12

Melt together the butter, golden syrup and cocoa powder. Add this mixture to the biscuits and raisins and mix well. Tip the biscuit mixture into the dish and using the back of a tablespoon,

4.

press down firmly. In particular, make sure the mixture goes into the corners.

the same size, place on top and fill with something heavy to press down the tiffin.

5. Smooth off the mixture as best you can and cover with another sheet of greaseproof paper. If you have another dish

Now refrigerate for 4 hours, or better still overnight. Lift the tiffin out of the dish and cut into 16 pieces.

A GoodRead Read A Good

‘The Snowman’ by Jo Nesbø A bit of a different novel this month and a genre that is growing in popularity these days: Nordic noir. ‘The Snowman’ is about as far from Miss Marple as you can get and will appeal to fans of Stig Larsson’s ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Nesbø is the creator of Harry Hole, an ex-alcoholic detective from Oslo. Hole became famous when he was sent to Australia to help solve the murder of a Norwegian citizen. This sealed his reputation upon his return to Norway: a country lacking in serial killers. Until the events of ‘The Snowman’. In this, the seventh Harry Hole book, women start to go missing from the Oslo area. They all have one thing in common: they are all married. In each case there doesn’t seem to be any reason why these women would go missing. Marital status alone is not enough to make a connection but in these snowy regions of Northern Europe there is one more similarity between the cases. In each case a snowman appears at the murder scene. This is an engrossing novel which draws you, not only into the case, but into Hole’s life in the capital of Norway. As in all of Nesbø’s novels, the city of Oslo and the surrounding areas come to life almost as if they were characters in their own right. Hole is far from a hero, his character flaws are ever present and conflict between him and his colleagues is a common theme. As with many novels in this genre life is shown, warts and all, and it makes for a novel that is dark, 30

bleak, alien, and yet one you will struggle to put down. ‘Titanic: An Edwardian Girl’s Diary 1912’ by Ellen Emerson White There can be very few adults who have not heard of the sinking of the Titanic on its maiden voyage in 1912 and for young readers this novel offers an introduction to this key historical event which changed the safety measures on ships for ever. The ‘My Story’ books are diaries which help to teach children of key events in British history. In this novel 12-year-old Margaret Anne Brady is an orphan who dreams of escaping her life. Following the death of her father five years earlier she was left at the orphanage by her older brother as he had to go to America to seek a new life and could not take her with him. Ever since then she has dreamed of being reunited with him. So she cannot believe her luck when she is chosen to accompany wealthy American Mrs Carstairs across the Atlantic. Finally, she can be reunited with her brother. But their passage is booked on The RMS Titanic. This floating microcosm of all layers of British society is about to meet its demise and change the lives of many, including Margaret. With vivid descriptions of life aboard the ship, with its crisp white tablecloths, the reader is transported back to the Edwardian era where she learns that class is everything and decides if you live or die. Vet’s Corner

Feeding rabbits the correct type and amount of food is important for their health. Rabbits’ teeth grow throughout their life, so they need to wear them down or they risk suffering from dental problems such as uneven teeth, with spurs that can damage the mouth. To properly wear their teeth, their diet should consist of at least 80% good quality hay or grasses. As well as maintaining healthy teeth, rabbits need this fibre to keep their gut moving and

working properly. They need constant access to hay as, unlike dogs and cats, their guts cannot cope with periods of starvation. Rabbits should also be offered fresh, green, leafy vegetables and herbs daily. Dry food and treats (such as fruit) should make up the minority of their food. Pellets are preferred over museli-style diets as these encourage selective eating, where the rabbit preferentially eats high starch components over high fibre ones. This leads to an unbalanced diet and a decrease in hay and water intake. If you are unsure what to feed your rabbit please contact our nurses.

If concerned about your animals, please call Sprinz & Nash. Vets are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dr Aurelia Verdin BVetMed MRCVS
