Welcome to the first Chiltern View Magazine of the year. We do hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are looking forward to 2019. We hope you like the cheeky chappy on our front cover and we hope that, like us, you are helping to encourage birds into your gardens to support their feeding through the winter. Feeding birds helps to bring them closer and makes it easier to observe their fascinating behaviour. Why not try one of the walks from the Chilterns Conservation Board (we are excited to be able to publish walks from areas on the edge of our delivery area, see page 12) and see what wildlife you can spot. There is an abundance of information and advice available via

the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) website -www.rspb.org.uk. If you need to stock up on bird food then The Kennel Shop in Stokenchurch (see advert on P 46) has a huge range of both food and feeders alongside their extensive range of pet products, or why not visit Askett Garden Centre (P 86). We hope you also love the picture of the latest (and cutest) member of the Chiltern View Team. This is Coralie’s new puppy, Kenzo, and, as you can see, he has already been allocated his own seat in the office. At the moment his only interest in Chiltern View Magazine is based around destruction tactics, but we do hope that most of you value it rather more than that, and find this issue useful and informative.

Chenies and Chess Valley Walk via Latimer This easy- going 2 1/4 mile, stile free walk takes you alongside the River Chess to the picturesque village of Latimer. You will then cross the river and head up into the woods on the other side of the valley, from where there is a pleasant walk back to Chenies, with views across to Latimer and returning past Chenies Manor House. Start: Chenies Village Green. Park around the village green. Chalfont and Latimer Station is about ½ mile from the nearest point on the walk. The walk can also be started at Westwood Park where there is plenty of parking at the Recreation Ground. Refreshments: The Bedford Arms and the Red Lion pubs in Chenies. Route: From Chenies village green 1 follow the road down the hill. Just past a cottage on your left take the path up the bank, which cuts out a road loop; follow the path (ignoring a right turn) until you meet the road again. 2 Cross over with care (watch out for traffic on your right), turn left and, after about 50 metres, turn right down Mill Lane and over the bridge past the former mill on your right. Cross another bridge over the River Chess, then turn left by Mill Farm 3 and onto a riverside path (the Chess Valley Walk and Chiltern Heritage Trail). Follow the riverside path, ignoring paths off to your right. On your left, you will see a brick tomb to a local brick maker William Liberty who died in 1777. © Colin Drake

Pass through a large water meadow, finally reaching the road to Latimer village. 4 At this point you may wish to turn right along the road for a short detour to see the picturesque old buildings that make up Latimer village. Cross the road with care and follow a footpath which climbs uphill across the meadow (fine views down to a lake on your left), to a minor road where you turn left. 5 Walk down the road and cross over the bridge, with the Neptune waterfall on your right, and cross a 12

paddock to a gate by a road. 6 Cross the road and follow the path towards a wood. On reaching the wood, ignore a footpath on the right, instead follow the broad main path left through an avenue of trees. At the top turn sharp left along a bridleway which runs along the top edge of the wood and eventually brings you out to a minor road (Stony Lane). 7 Turn right along the lane for a few metres then left along a bridleway, first through a wood and then along the top of a field with views to Latimer village and the Chess valley on your left. When the path splits, continue along the bridleway by a house on your right. At the end of the bridleway 8 go through a black estate gate and turn right along a driveway, then shortly left on a crossing footpath signed to Chenies village. Follow this past the manor house and gardens on your left. On reaching the road by Chenies school, continue straight on to the village green. This walk is one of a series produced by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can download the route in more detail from www.chilternsaonb.org. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Health

A few simple habits

can make life more rewarding Unfortunately injury is a common threat when engaging in sport or even the activities of every day life. How we treat it may determine our path to either full recovery or re-injury. David, as a professional Osteopath, suggests that you don’t have to be in fear and pain whilst continuing with an active lifestyle. Injury recovery can be as much a mental process as it is a physical one. Negative emotions and a reduction in confidence are a completely natural response to injury. It is understandable to feel over cautious about jumping back into training after an accident, even after being cleared by your doctor or therapist but there are several things you can do to ease your transition back into full active health. Firstly, acknowledge that you do not have to accept being in pain or fearing further injury, and

26

then establish a care team in whom you have confidence. This may include, amongst others, your GP, Osteopath, friends and family. Their support will increase self-confidence and reduce re-injury anxiety. Once you are in the recovery phase assess how effectively your practices are helping you to remain pain free, and then adjust them as necessary. Recovery is a long term, ongoing process. Best wishes, David

Book Review

Beat the winter blues How to be Famous – Caitlin Moran Snort-your-tea-out-ofyour-nose-funny, How to be Famous centres around 19-year-old Johanna Morrigan aka the writer Dolly Wilde. It’s 1995, Britpop has taken over the music scene and there’s no better place to be than London. Until, that is, Johanna finds herself the subject of malicious gossip and has to decide whether to flee or fight back. The Accidental Memoir – Eve Makis and Anthony Chopper If you’ve ever thought about capturing moments of your life using the written word but have no idea where to start, you need this book. Prompts range from ‘Is there a mystery in your family? A story rarely spoken about?’ to ‘What posters did you have on your bedroom wall?’ and ‘Write a letter to your younger self.’ There are also extracts from other memoirs, writing tips and more. Slow – Gizzi Erskine Comfort eating doesn’t have to mean chocolate, shop-bought pies and a vat of ice cream. It can mean taking the time to show yourself some self-care by preparing delicious, wholesome, hearty dishes. Slow has plenty of recipes to help you do just that, from warming winter stews to slow-roasted meats and decadent desserts. They’re all written in Gizzi’s usual easy, 30

unaffected style. Salt Beef Brisket anyone? Or Lemon Sherbet Meringue Pie? Yum. Why Mummy Drinks: The Journal – Gill Sims Frazzled parents everywhere will find something to relate to in Why Mummy Drinks. Humorous reflections on parenting in the modern world precede spaces to jot down your own thoughts each day. If you like journals (and laughing), and have ever wondered whether you should just record yourself shouting ‘Teeth! Hair! Shoes! Hurry up!’ to save having to speak in the morning, this book is for you. Down to Earth – Monty Don One of the easiest ways to lift your spirits is to get out into nature. There are few things more satisfying than growing something yourself and spring is just around the corner. Down to Earth is a useful book for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. It doesn’t matter whether you have acres of land or a tiny courtyard, you’ll find advice, tips and inspiration on everything from garden design and plant choice to pest control. Reasons to Stay Alive – Matt Haig An estimated 10% of people will suffer from depression at some point in their lives. If you’re waging your own battle against this debilitating illness, Reasons to Stay Alive may help. Matt Haig chronicles his own fight against depression and shares what worked for him. It’s an honest, warm, humorous and very relatable read. You may also find Haig’s Notes on a Nervous Planet of interest if you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks. Pet Health

New Year New Diet For Your Pet! By Fiona Mullan RVN

With Christmas now behind us, many of us will plan New Year’s resolutions, such as joining the gym and eating more healthily to lose the extra inches. With an estimated 50% of UK pets now overweight, this is a perfect time to include your pet in your new healthier lifestyle. Here are a few tips for healthier pets. • Know the ‘body condition score’! Body condition scoring is the way your vet/ veterinary nurse will assess your pet’s weight and shape and if they need to lose weight. A common score is a scale of 1-5 1= emaciated, 2 = underweight, 3 = ideal, 4 = overweight, 5 = obese. An ideal score means you should be able to feel your pet’s ribs under a minimal layer of fat cover, but not able to see them. Viewed from above they should have a visible waistline, and no hanging belly. Make a free weight check appointment at your veterinary practice to check your pet’s ideal weight and food quantities. • Weigh their food accurately A ‘handful’ or ‘bowlful’ is not an accurate way of measuring your pet’s daily intake, and more likely that they will be overfed as a result. Check the feeding guidelines on the food bag to work out what their total DAILY requirement should be. The daily requirement is the total amount they need in a 24-hour 34

period. If they get treats, scraps from the table, this is all EXTRA calories they do not need! • Get them out an about! It may seem obvious, but a lot of pets do not get the exercise that they require. A quick ‘stroll around the block’ with your dog is not adequate, and they will not burn off what they are taking in. Including your dog in your own work out, will make exercise more enjoyable for both of you increase bonding. • Rabbits and cats are more tricky to exercise, but not impossible! Some cats love to engage in play, and chasing laser pens and string toys can be a great way of getting them moving. Rabbits and smaller pets should have access to a large run enclosure where they can hop around freely. Try making their enclosure more exciting with different levels which they can climb up and down, and tunnels for them to run through. Keeping your pet at an ideal weight will save on medical bills and prolong their life. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Chiltern Arts Festival In September 2017, Chiltern Arts introduced itself to the local community with a sold-out launch concert from the Academy of Ancient Music in Marlow. There followed two more launch concerts and the very first Chiltern Arts Festival in February with 16 events over nine days in locations across the Chiltern Hills.

36

Returning for a second season that opened at the end of September with a weekend celebrating the music of Bach, Chiltern Arts has now released its programme for the Chiltern Arts Festival 2019 – offering a feast of music over eight days in February, with something for every music-lover in the area.

of prosecco, canapés and a two-course meal, it’s certainly one not to miss! The exceptional young baroque ensemble, Flauti d’echo, performs a beautiful programme exploring mirrored melodies and haunting reflections with music from Handel, Bach, Purcell and Telemann set in the idyllic surroundings of Hughenden Parish Church.

The Festival opens in Berkhamsted where Chiltern Arts welcome back the City of London Sinfonia for a superb programme inspired by the orchestra’s London series entitled Bach and the Cosmos. Celebrated pianist Steven Osborne brings a programme of Schubert, Debussy and Prokofiev to Great Missenden Parish Church, featuring Schubert’s most famous piano sonata – the Sonata in Bb.

Choral lovers will be thrilled to hear one of the world’s finest vocal ensembles Stile Antico with a programme inspired by the musical gems of the time of Elizabeth I, and to have the opportunity to sing with the renowned composer and conductor, Bob Chilcott – there’s even a ticket deal to attend both events, which take place at St Mary’s Church in Henley.

Renowned baritone Roderick Williams features alongside a distinguished group of singers and pianist Christopher Glynn for a Chiltern Arts World Premiere performance of Hugo Wolf’s Italian Songbook in Marlow’s All Saints’ Church, beautifully perched on the river. A special Concert and Dinner event at The Gatsby in Berkhamsted welcomes the outstanding Kosmos Ensemble who will bring their unique folk-classical music to Chiltern Arts… and with tickets including a glass

And last, but certainly not least, the Festival closes with a stunning production of what is perhaps Mozart’s most famous and most-loved opera, Così fan tutte. Set ingeniously on a 1950s film set and sung in English, this comedy of love and fidelity won’t fail to dazzle audiences. To find out more and to purchase tickets, visit chilternarts.com

Blue Cross | Animal Charity Can you rehome a pet?

Darcy, 8 years 3 months old, white shorthair cat. Eight year old Darcy is a handsome white cat looking for a quiet home where he can stretch his legs and have loads of love and attention. He can be a little nervous at first so is looking for a family that will allow him time to find his paws in his new surroundings. He likes to go out and explore in the 40

garden, but he also likes a little sofa time. He can be nervous of other cats, so he would like to be the one and only pet in the household. Darcy can live with school age children. Junior, 3 years 4 months old, gold and white Siberian husky/border collie cross Junior is an active boy who is looking for a home with owners who can take him on long walks and have lots of play time. This three year old could play fetch with you all day, just bringing toys back to you and dropping

them at your feet. Because he’s part Husky, he’s looking for a family that has had experience of owning Huskies or similar breeds before. Junior would be fine living with school age children. If you can give Darcy or Junior a loving new home or are looking for a new companion take a look at the Blue Cross website at www.bluecross.org.uk www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Advice

Calcium & Vitamin D for healthy bones & teeth Calcium

Calcium is essential for the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth (also for normal blood clotting, nerve function and enzyme activity). It is an essential nutrient throughout life for everyone. A poor calcium intake prevents bones from developing normally or they become weak causing osteoporosis (brittle bones). Daily calcium requirements Age group calcium requirement 0-12 months 525mg 1-3 years 350mg 4-6 years 450mg 7-10 years 550mg Males 11-18 years 1000mg Males 19+ years 700mg Females 11-18years 800mg Females 19+ years 700mg Breastfeeding 1250mg coeliac disease 1000-1200mg Sources of calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy foods dairy free/vegan milk, yogurts and cheese with added calcium sardines and pilchards (only if eating the bones) green leafy vegetables soya beans/tofu nuts, cereals fortified with calcium bread and foods made with calcium fortified flour If you are unable to get enough calcium from your diet then calcium supplements are available

Vitamin D

Works alongside calcium to build and maintain strong bones and the recommended dose required is 10ug (400 International Units IU) daily. A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain and osteoporosis in adults. We obtain most of our vitamin D from sunlight on our skin (which is why it is called the sunshine vitamin) but if you don’t go outside much, wear sunscreen or are covered up, this vitamin D is unavailable to you.

Nearly 2000 passenger use our bus each month. We make the bus available by non-profit making groups when not on scheduled services and we also run outings each month to places of interest. Said one recently “Thank you for the help you give me, without it I would not get out as I do.” And a group which hired the bus last year said “Many thanks for arranging our outing to College Lake Nature Reserve last Wednesday which happened to be the hottest day of the year so far! We all enjoyed the visit despite the heat and your lady driver was excellent. We look forward to using the Community Bus again.” Anyone can use our bus, young and old alike. The fare for most journeys is only £1.50 and most concessionary cards are accepted. Children aged 16 and under travel free.

Have You Heard About Cohousing? Cohousing is a way of living alongside other people whom you can depend on for support, while having your own front door. Residents live in their own homes but also share some facilities such as a common house and gardens. A senior cohousing scheme can provide a secure and supportive environment through the second half of life without putting oneself in the hands of a large and perhaps expensive institution. There are typically 20-30 homes in a scheme with some units for rent as well as for purchase. Cohousing schemes are self-generated and self-organised. They provide one answer to the question “who will support us as we age?” The answer is that we will support each other, at least longer than if we were living in isolation. Senior cohousing intends support without

Celebrate the 10th year of the Florence Nightingale Hospice Midnight Walk this year Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity’s Midnight Walk began in 2010 with 550 ladies walking up to 12 miles and raised £65,000. By 2018 the event had opened up to include men and has become their largest fundraising event. Over the past nine years the walk has raised over £500,000 towards running Florence Nightingale Hospice – providing much needed support to patients and their families across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire. This year, they are inviting everyone to join them for the 10th anniversary of the walk on Saturday 22nd June to celebrate the lives of loved ones and the work that the Hospice does to provide comfort to those in need. “The Midnight Walk is such an inspiring event to take part in and plays a huge role in our fundraising for the Hospice,” explains Lee Lloyd, Head of Fundraising at the charity. “We hope that this 10th 58

Anniversary walk will be a recordbreaker with the highest number of walkers ever.” Walkers can choose from the 5 mile or 10 miles circular routes – both starting from Aylesbury College at midnight with entertainment along the way. Anyone registering before 28th February can take advantage of the Early Bird Offer at just £17 per entry (from 1st March it’s £20). Walkers receive a free souvenir Midnight Walk 2019 T-shirt, as well as a medal and complimentary breakfast at the end of the Walk. 2. Panama

Panama is considered the bridge of the Americas. It’s just a 2.5-hour flight away from Miami in the US, and you can easily board another plane to the Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro from there. It’s a small, coffee producing country, but its geisha coffee, grown on the nearby mountains of Boquete, is referred to as “the champagne of coffees”.

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

Make Your Will Month Write or update your Will in February and support Rennie Grove Hospice Care Throughout February, a selected group of legal experts from across Herts and Bucks are donating their time and legal expertise to write a standard Will in return for a donation to Rennie Grove Hospice Care. Good sense tells us that everyone should make a Will and regularly update it, but surprisingly few people actually do. However, if you don’t plan ahead, the law may not deal with your estate as you would have wished. Having an up-to-date professionally written Will is the best way to ensure that your estate is distributed in the way you wish when you die. Landmark life events – such as marriage, having children, divorce and retirement – are times to consider writing or reviewing your Will. By getting involved in Rennie Grove’s Will writing scheme in February you will be getting your own affairs in order as well as safeguarding Rennie Grove’s service for future generations with your donation.

And if you are able to consider leaving a gift in your Will to Rennie Grove, this will enable more patients in the future to have the choice to remain at home and receive its specialist services. Sue Varvel, Director of Nursing at Rennie Grove explains: “Leaving a gift in your Will means our nurses can be here for families in the future. Through your legacy you’ll be helping us to bring the very best care to people of all ages at the time they need it most.” If you would like to find out more about leaving a gift in your Will, please call 01442 507344 or email legacy@renniegrove.org Local solicitors supporting Make Your Will Month: Cartmell & Co, Chalfont St Giles, Great Missenden and Stone Tel: 01296 747151 D C Kaye & Co, Amersham, Prestwood and Wendover Tel: 01494 862226 Gordons Solicitors, Marlow Tel: 01628 646590 Hine Solicitors Beaconsfield Tel: 01494 685588 Gerrards Cross Tel: 01753 482400 Horwood & James LLP Solicitors, Aylesbury Tel: 01296 487361 IBB Solicitors, Chesham Tel: 01494 790000 Kidd Rapinet, High Wycombe Tel: 01494 535321

Have you made your Will? During February, local participating solicitors in Herts and Bucks are giving our supporters the chance to have a standard Will written in return for a donation to support the nursing care of Rennie Grove. An up-to-date Will ensures your wishes are taken care of and you have the chance to recognise the causes you care about. Recipe

Tandoori lamb with naan A pot of yogurt and a few spices can transform lamb steaks into a delicious spicy supper. If you prefer, serve with pilau rice or on a bed of spiced couscous. Serves 4 Ready in 30 mins, plus marinating time

Ingredients: • 4 large lamb steaks • 6 tbsp natural yoghurt, plus extra to serve • 2cm piece root ginger, peeled and grated • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 2 tsp each garam masala and ground cumin • 1 tsp each ground coriander and chilli powder • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 4 garlic and coriander naan breads • Rocket leaves and sliced tomatoes, onion and cucumber, to serve

1.

Place the lamb steaks in a shallow dish. Mix together the yoghurt, ginger, garlic, spices and

76

lemon juice and add 1/2 tsp salt and some freshly ground black pepper. Spread over the steaks. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 2-3 hours (or overnight).

2.

Grill the marinated steaks under a preheated medium grill for 6-8 minutes on each side until just cooked and lightly charred in places. Cover the cooked steaks and leave to rest for 5 minutes.

3.

Meanwhile, sprinkle the naan breads lightly with water and heat under the grill for 2-3 minutes. Top with rocket leaves and sliced tomatoes, onion and cucumber. Slice the steaks and pile on top of the salad. Serve with the extra yogurt on the side and mango chutney, if liked.

TIP To make tandoori fish, replace the lamb steaks with 4 salmon fillets. Spread the marinade over the fillets and leave to marinate for 1-2 hours. Bake the fish in a preheated oven at 200C/fan 180C/gas mark 6 for 20-25 minutes until just cooked.

Risborough Run in the Park Risborough Run in the Park is a free 5k for people of all ages and abilities to come and take part. The event is held every Sunday morning in Wades Park, Princes Risborough. It was established in 2014 by Trevor Lynch and it has come a long way since three other runners joined Trevor on that misty November morning, (as of Nov 2018, a total of 1040 kilometres have been run since the beginning – but who’s counting!). Over 800 runners have registered with the run since 2014 and, if you come along to Wades Park at 9am on a Sunday morning, you will likely see keen runners, recreational joggers, families (some with prams) and dogs (on leads of course) all making their way around Wades Park. It is a great way to keep fit and run with people of similar ability in a friendly and safe environment. 78

Trevor used it as a way to maintain his fitness through a recent battle with Lymphoma. He kept running through multiple rounds of chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants and he found that exercise kept his spirits up during this tough treatment. Trevor also used the Run in the Park as a way to train for his participation in the 2018 British Transplant Games, in which he won a silver in the 5k and bronze in the 1500 metres. If you fancy getting back into running, or continuing your jogging with a friendly group, then come along to Wades Park on any Sunday morning at 9am and join in. Time to get excited about Hearing Technology Recent years have seen significant improvements in the field of audiology and hearing technology. No longer are hearing devices bulky, uncomfortable to wear and difficult to adjust but they are now a form of wearable technology, selected to match the hearing needs and lifestyle of the wearer. The greatest advances have been in developments in digital wireless technology, connectivity and individualisation. Now, more than ever before, hearing technology can give the wearer greater control to meet his/her particular needs. Devices are capable of delivering improved clarity and sound quality from one environment to another, using automatic features such as directionality and noise reduction.

Digital Technology

Thanks to the continued development of the silicon chip, hearing aids are able to process huge levels of data at mind blowing speeds. They can process incoming sounds at speeds undetectable to the human ear giving a sound recognition closer to natural hearing than ever before. The chips are also so tiny that hearing devices now offer discreet, cosmetic styling to suit even the most significant hearing loss.

Connectivity

Bluetooth connectivity is the single most exciting development in hearing technology enabling you to link your hearing aids to other gadgets in your daily life. Electronic devices such as the TV, mobile phones, music players, etc may all transmit audio directly and wirelessly into the hearing aid, giving the wearer more freedom and control. With the rise in popularity of wireless in-ear headphones for listening to music, ear pieces are now commonplace and hearing aid wearers at last have an advantage. We predict that hearing devices will become an important and desirable lifestyle technology of the future.

Future trends

The very latest hearing technology we supply at Aston Hearing now links seamlessly with your smartphone using Apps to access a vast array of services, but there are new more amazing trends emerging. Examples include the ability to translate languages in real time as you hear them through your smartphone or even an App that uses your hearing aid as a health monitor to keep track of blood pressure and heart rate.

Invest in your hearing

At Aston Hearing we recognise that hearing care is a significant investment for anyone to consider. We believe that the care, experience and service we offer ensures you always receive the best from your investment. We help you to maximise the lifespan of your hearing devices and many of our clients are happily wearing their hearing aids 8-10 years later. All of the technology we provide can be re-programmed to cover most changes in hearing meaning we can future proof your investment wherever possible.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue

Hello my name is Pepsi! I’m a Staffordshire Bull Terrier of approx. 3 years old I was handed in to a pound on Christmas Eve so Christmas is a sad time for me. My previous owners didn’t look after me very well so sometimes I get scared by fast movements and loud noises, but I love affection and a fuss and will come up to you and give you a cuddle whenever I can ! Sometimes I get a bit overexcited but one of my favourite games to help me calm down is ‘find it’. This is where they hide treats around the grass and I have to be able to sniff them out, I would play this game all day if they let me ! I would love a large enclosed garden of my own one day to sniff and explore ! Unfortunately I suffer from epilepsy therefore am on lifetime medication to help prevent my seizures. Because of this sometimes I forget previously learned commands and I can

80

31/07/2018 13:35

become easily excitable. If I get new owners they will need to understand that I need time and patience to become myself again after an episode and please not to get angry or frustrated with me. They have tried mixing me with different types of dogs but I get very frustrated and intense so my dog carers think I would be best suited as the only dog in the home so I can get all the attention and love I deserve. They say in the right home with experienced and understanding owners, I will make a fantastic, loving and affectionate companion. Can you offer me a loving and permanent new home? www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695 www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Gardening

Winter Gardening With Christmas and the New Year behind us, the days are beginning to get longer, and we gardeners start to think about the new season ahead. This is the year we’re going to get everything right - our vegetables will be exhibition quality and our flowers and shrubs will be the envy of the neighbourhood. Well, that’s the plan anyway. But we all know that isn’t going to happen! Yes, we’ll win more than we lose, but every year there are always a few disappointments in the garden. Look at last summer, the best we’ve had for decades, constant sun and warmth, ideal conditions for growing. But.... even last year our runner beans and peas struggled. Despite daily watering neither of these crops did themselves justice, the hot weather was just too much for them. But, on the other hand, our tomatoes, beetroot, onions and garlic were superb. It just goes to show, that even with the ‘best’ conditions and years and years of gardening experience, mother nature will always have the upper hand, it can be frustrating but actually, to many, that is the appeal of gardening. Every year is different, there will be victories and defeats, that’s just the way it is! The first task of the new year is the selection of seed potatoes. Our stock arrives at the end of January, but they shouldn’t be planted out until March, at the earliest. Some gardeners stick with their tried and trusted varieties, others like to ring the changes and

86

try different types each year. If this is to be your first attempt at growing seed potatoes, bear in mind different varieties are better for specific uses. For instance, if you are growing your crop for mashed potato, grow Maris Piper or King Edward, likewise for roasting Desiree are perfect, for chips go for Rooster or Pentland Dell. We stock around 20 varieties, so there’s bound to be one for you. Once the weather does improve and the first lawnmowers of spring can be heard, it’s lawn time. Take a look at the bare patches and start to think about reseeding and applying feed, weed and moss killer. A little work at this time of year will pay dividends in the summer. Happy Gardening, see you soon,

Simon, Alison and all at Askett Nurseries www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Do you know someone amazing who lives, works or studies in Thame? Nominations open in early January for the 2019 Thame Town Awards, so it’s time to get your thinking caps on! Who do you know that lives, works or studies in Thame and achieved something great in 2018? Or maybe you know an unsung hero who commits a lot of their time to volunteering or helping a worthy cause? The Town Awards panel, made up of representatives from different sectors of Thame’s community, love hearing about the fantastic people who make Thame’s community a safer, more vibrant and happier place to live, and look forward to reading the nominations made each year. To date, the Town Awards panel has awarded 60 Town Awards to local people. One of 2018’s winners, Vicky Wheeldon, was delighted with her Sporting Achievement award:

88

“I felt proud and grateful to be given the opportunity to represent the hockey club and all the hard work a dedicated and growing group of people have put into it over the past 10 years. It was a treat to join the celebrations, and I enjoyed hearing about the other award winners’ stories and felt privileged to be there with them. You should nominate people for a Town Award because it’s a great way to recognise the unsung heroes in our community. There are so many enthusiastic people out there busy sharing their passion for sports, the arts, service and volunteering for others in our town. They are doing a great job and are helping to keep Thame a more vibrant and interesting place to live.” www.thametowncouncil. gov.uk/town-awards.
