Welcome to the July/August issue of Chiltern View magazine, once again packed with events, clubs, societies and great local advertisers. We would like to say a big thank you to Agi Gallacher, who we feel has captured the essence of summer in this lovely countryside shot on our front cover. Agi is living out her dream to be a professional photographer and will finish her course in March 2019. With pictures like this, we are in no doubt she will have a great career ahead of her.
We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful area, with lots to explore and so many places to visit. This issue we have included a wonderful walk near Tring (P54), with both canal and countryside views, perfect for a summer day. We have even more great competitions for you to enter in this issue so why not have a go? Wycombe Swan Theatre (P64), Thame Players (P36), Midsommer Tour (P40) and Aylesbury Waterside Theatre (P86). Finally, should the weather deteriorate, (as we write this we are enjoying glorious June sunshine!) why not have a look at the excellent travel article by Spear Travels (P28) and start to plan your sunshine for next year. Wishing you all a lovely summer. Until next time

Gardening
Summer Gardening It’s that time of year when the main phase of sowing and planting out is behind us, and we gardeners are now busy managing and maintaining our fruit, vegetables and ornamental plants to ensure we get the best possible results from our work in the Spring. The main job in Summer is beating the weeds. To keep on top of these invaders it’s best to deal with them a little and often. Try to get into your garden every day, spending just half an hour or so dealing with your weeds will do wonders. For a small area, it’s simple enough to deal with weeds by hand or with a hand trowel, for larger beds a simple hoe will do the job. Get to the weeds before they are able to form seed heads - otherwise you’ll find they will multiply. If you wish to completely clear an area of weeds, then there is the option of using a herbicide, such as Round Up. These days weed killers are much safer and eco-friendly than they were some years ago. Most of them are systemic, meaning they will go down into the roots. This is a selective way of weedkilling, so you can deal with weeds in a bed full of herbaceous or bedding plants and not damage them. To keep your plants flowering throughout the Summer, you must deadhead regularly. Perennials, bedding and basket plants will all benefit from regular attention. A good tip is to use liquid tomato feed on any plant you want
8
to flower. A feed just once a week will keep the colour going in your garden right into the Autumn. The other problem we can have if it’s a hot, dry Summer, is watering. Mulching your beds with something like composted bark will keep the moisture in, and deter weeds. Hopefully you added water storage gel to your baskets and tubs, this will keep the pots damp, although obviously you’ll still need to keep an eye on them. Do watch out for your hanging baskets too. A warm breeze will soon dry them out, a good drenching once a day is needed. And don’t forget to stake your perennials such as Dahlias, they will be putting on a lot of growth and will need support to prevent them toppling over. But as well as all these jobs, don’t forget to enjoy your garden! Do find time to just sit and admire the results of all your work.

You only have one pair of ears make sure you protect them!
Many of us take our ears and hearing for granted and it is only when they are damaged that we take notice. In today’s digital world, our hearing is challenged more than ever before. Many of us wear earplugs or headphones and our ears are therefore constantly switched on or ‘plugged in’. It is estimated that 66% of us listen to music louder than 85 decibels, which means we are risking permanent hearing damage and tinnitus.
At Aston Hearing we encourage a pro-active approach and want people to protect their ears before they have a problem. We offer custom-made earplugs which are made bespoke for the best possible fit and we have a range of styles to suit different situations, from music gigs to industrial environments. Our in-house expert, Richard, has been involved in drum and bass music production for many years and can advise you on the best way forward.
If you think your lifestyle may be damaging your ears, it is worth asking yourself the following questions: • Have you ever hit the pillow after a night out and had a ringing or buzzing in your ears? • Have you ever removed your music earphones and found you can still hear the bass? • Can your friends hear the music from your headphones when sat next to you? • Do you have tinnitus? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these then you may have already damaged your hearing. One of the most common signs of damage to the inner ear is tinnitus, or ‘ringing in the ear’. It can happen when you are exposed to loud noise, through injury, a side effect of medication, infection or stress. It can be very debilitating and disturbing to live with. One way to manage or avoid tinnitus is to protect your ears from loud noise.
“When I am not manning the front desk at Aston Hearing, I am busy producing music and have been aware of the importance of protecting my ears for a long time. Do come in and see me for more information or take a look at our website at www.astonhearing.co.uk under ‘protecting your hearing’.” - Richard

Aylesbury LNWR at FestiRail The Risborough & District Model Railway Club is proud to present the last ever full public showing of Geoff Williams’s iconic 1:76 scale Aylesbury LNWR layout. This fifty-five year old model of the former Aylesbury High Street station (once situated where Vale Park is today), represents faithfully the whole station complex (including engine shed, goods yard and adjoining gas works), as it would have looked in the year 1911. Built to a very high standard of realism, the model achieves a convincing sense of scenic depth through the decreasing perspective of the background building, and provides possibly the last opportunity to view a pre First World War scene of Aylesbury.
16
Being originally built in Geoff’s loft, the layout has since been adapted for public viewing for its appearance at FestiRail, which it is anticipated, will attract considerable interest both from local residents and from the wider exhibition-going public, particularly as this opportunity is unlikely to be repeated by the Club. Photograph by Andy York, courtesy of BRM. FestiRail Model Railway Exhibition is the Club’s contribution as part of the Princes Risborough Town Festival week, which this year takes place on July 7th between 11am and 4pm at Princes Risborough Community Centre. Plenty of time to pay for your holiday When you book early, you’ll have the longest time to pay for your holiday. If you wait until the last minute, you will have to pay everything upfront. Need a new summer wardrobe for your next trip? You’ll have plenty of time to plan for that, too. No last-minute bikini purchases, you’ll be able to pick out bargains at your leisure. If you like the sound of spreading the cost of your holiday, then look out for low deposit offers. You can secure your holiday for a small cost, making sure you get the exact holiday you want, without a massive outlay upfront. With an amazing holiday within your sights, saving a little money every week will be so much easier – just keep imagining those beach-side cocktails, theme may park be rides, or cosy candle-lit dinners by, but then by, butwater’s thenyou you may bewondering wonderingwhat whatyou you at the edge. are aremissing. missing. The Themost mostpopular popularcruises cruisesare areThe The Rhine and Danube with to Rhine andThe The Danube withvisits visits toNuremberg, Nuremberg, You won’t have to settle for second best Budapest, Amsterdam and Prague to name Budapest, Amsterdam andthe Prague to nameofaa finding Book early and you stand best chance few. The Roaming Empire How to access the internet when you’re on holiday Internet access can be really useful when you’re travelling. Map apps can help you find your way around and others can help you get better deals on tourist attractions, discover the best places to eat and drink or avoid the worst tourist traps. But how do you actually get online without spending a fortune? The cheapest way to get online is via free Wi-Fi, which is available in all kinds of places – not just the familiar cafes and transport hubs but in malls, on public transport and anywhere else tourists are likely to go. Be wary, though, especially if you’re using your device for something private such as online banking. It’s very easy to set up a convincing-looking Wi-Fi hotspot and then intercept the data people send, such as their online banking IDs. If in doubt use a security program called a Virtual Private Network (VPN) –Tunnelbear is one example – which establishes Tunnelbear Virtual a secure, eyes-only tunnel between Private Networking app you and the site you’re visiting. Another option is to use your mobile phone to create a Wi-Fi hotspot. This enables other devices to connect to your phone and use its data connection. It’s very easy to do (the relevant option will be in your phone’s settings menu) but be careful if you have a monthly data transfer limit: using multiple devices can quickly take you 30
Vodafone portable Wi-Fi hotspot
beyond your monthly cap. If your phone doesn’t have this feature you can buy a “dongle” or a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot; the former plugs into your laptop’s USB port to give it mobile data access and the latter is a portable device that creates a Wi-Fi hotspot your other devices can use. You should be particularly careful about using mobile data if you’re outside the UK and EU. Charges for mobile data abroad can be terrifying, so we’d strongly recommend buying a mobile data add-on that gives you a fixed amount of data for a fixed price. You can usually get more than enough mobile data for your daily needs for just a few pounds per day. Three.co.uk USB
Make sure your contract doesn’t dongle for laptops already include roaming, though. For example, our Vodafone contract includes free roaming in 48 different countries. It doesn’t include North or South America, Africa or Asia but it covers Europe and several groups of islands. For the time being, you won’t be charged extra for using your mobile or tablet in the European Union as roaming charges within the EU were scrapped in 2017. However, when the UK leaves Europe under Brexit, operators will no longer be compelled to let their customers roam for free. It’s possible that they may decide to stick to the current arrangement, but we’re not very optimistic. Whatever you do, be careful what you’re doing. Streaming Netflix or iPlayer programmes is best kept to Wi-Fi, as the downloads can be huge, and beware apps that do things in the background when you’re not actually using your phone. We find it’s best to keep our phones off or in aeroplane mode when we’re not actually using them.

Recipe
Roast Salmon with Tomato & Asparagus Tagliatelle This light summery supper is on the table in less than 30 minutes – perfect when you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. If you prefer, replace the salmon with pieces of cod loin or smoked haddock fillets. Serves 4 Ready in 20 minutes
Ingredients: • 4 x 175g pieces salmon fillet • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp olive oil • 250g cherry tomatoes • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced • 250g tagliatelle (see Tip) • 150g asparagus tips • 1 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley • Lemon wedges to serve
1.
Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Place the salmon on a lightly oiled shallow roasting tin. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and drizzle over the lemon juice.
2.
Place the cherry tomatoes in a bowl and add half of the oil and the garlic. Toss gently to coat. Place in the roasting tin around the salmon. Roast for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is just cooked through and the tomatoes have softened. 32
3.
Meanwhile cook the tagliatelle in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 8-10 minutes or according to the packet instructions. Add the asparagus tips to the pan for the final 3 minutes. Drain well. Return to the pan.
4.
Add the roast cherry tomatoes and the remaining olive oil to the tagliatelle and asparagus and toss together. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
5.
Divide the pasta between four warmed plates. Top with the roasted salmon, sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve with the lemon wedges.
TIP You can use any long thin pasta for this dish; spaghetti or linguine would work just as well. If you use fresh pasta the cooking time will be reduced – just follow the instructions on the pack. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello! My name is Harvey; I’m a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and about 8 years old.
I am looking for a pet free home (I don’t like cats).
All of my carers and the volunteers that walk me tell me I’m a truly amazing gentleman.
The carers here tell me that whoever decides to adopt me is going to be adopting one of the most wonderful, loving dogs you could ever wish to meet as I put a smile on the face of everyone who spends time with me.
I arrived at SDR June 2017 but shortly after arriving I injured my back chasing after a tennis ball, but don’t let this put you off as with lots of TLC, rest, restricted walks and special exercises, I am now ready to find my forever home and give all the love and affection to my new owners that I am currently showing my carers. It’s important that my new owners understand what I have been through and they will also need to ensure they monitor my exercise so that I don’t do anything silly when playing with my toys. My two favourite things in the world are people and my toys.

Pet Health
To Vaccinate or not to Vaccinate? Dr. Kathryn Miller BVSc CertAVP PgCertVPS MRCVS
This may be one of the most controversial topics in small animal medicine, and difficult to cover in such a short article. Sadly, the internet is a brilliant source of mis-information which can ultimately lead to a lot of scaremongering. Inoculations are an important component of canine and feline healthcare plans, to protect them from preventable diseases which are often either fatal or affect them lifelong. However, it’s important to get the balance right - vaccinate just enough to ensure adequate lifelong immunity without over doing it. Below is a general guideline to inoculations recommended in most dogs and cats:
Dogs Annually Leptospirosis Every third year Distemper, Parvovirus and Infectious Hepatitis At risk dogs only Kennel cough Cats Annually Every third year Outdoor cats only
Herpes virus and Calicivirus (‘cat flu’) Feline Infectious Enteritis Feline Leukaemia Virus
Some vaccinations offer only short-acting immunity and require annual top ups. Other vaccinations last longer and are thus boosted every three years. 52
A blood test (or titre test) can be taken just before a vaccination is due, to see if your pet has a strong enough immunity to forego vaccination that year. However, vaccinations should never be skipped without first titre testing - to leave an animal without immunity could result in fatal consequences. A routine check-up is a great way to ensure your pet is in optimum health and can allow your vet to detect signs of problems that are on the horizon, possibly sparing you the trauma of an emergency visit later on. It is also a great time to ensure that your pet’s preventative health plan is up to date, including vaccines and anti-parasite treatment. An animal’s lifestyle affects its risk factors for contracting certain diseases, so each vaccination schedule should be tailored to your individual pet. Vets are very careful to avoid over vaccination – they give a slightly different vaccine each year to ensure that your pets schedule is tailored to exactly what they require and nothing more. That’s why your vet always checks your pet’s records to see what has been given over the last few years. Always feel confident to discuss your animal’s vaccination protocol with your veterinarian, or call 01494 459095 for advice over the phone. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Could you Sponsor Rusty Rusty is an incredibly cute little golden Spaniel. He loves chasing butterflies in the garden, adores snuggling into people’s feet, and when he sleeps, he emits little squeaks. As you can see, he also loves staring into the distance. Perhaps he’s contemplating his future? Because his future is going to be as a hearing dog – and you can help bring this about. If you’ve ever driven between High Wycombe and Princes Risborough, you might have spotted their signs, poking above the hedgerows, proclaiming ‘Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’. You might also have thought to yourself “What exactly do hearing dogs do?” It’s a valid question. Do they answer the phone? If so, do they have a great line in small talk? What hearing dogs actually do, is amazing. They utterly transform the lives of deaf people. Deaf people can often feel isolated or lonely. This is because they have difficulty interacting with people on a day-to-day basis, which can disconnect them from friends, family, their community and the world around them. They can also feel frustrated because there can be so much they want to do, but just cannot. They want to express themselves, be independent, do all the things that others may take for granted. Hearing dogs help with all of this. Emotionally, they are a constant companion, able to be with the deaf person all day, every day, anywhere and everywhere. Practically, they alert their deaf recipients to crucial sounds they can’t hear, such as the doorbell or fire alarm. This enables them to live life independently, free of the many frustrations and 60
uncertainty that deafness can bring on a day-to-day basis. They also signal to people that the recipient is deaf via their burgundy coats. As well as helping alert other people, this can actually stimulate conversation, bringing deaf people back into community life and making them feel less isolated. So today, Rusty is a tiny puppy. But one day, he will graduate to be an immensely capable and devoted companion to a deaf person who really needs his help. The great news is that you can sponsor Rusty throughout his training journey! For as little as £3 per month, you will receive a welcome pack, then updates throughout his training, with exclusive access to the online Hearing Dogs Puppy Pen blog for more Rusty-related cuteness. Just call Hearing Dogs for Deaf People on 01844 348 109, or visit hearingdogs.org.uk/sponsor to find out more. You’ll help make that future that Rusty is contemplating, come true.

BEST FOOT FORWARD……. at the Lucy Clark Scottish Country Dance Club Our busiest dancing year has been packed with so many opportunities to dance, socialise and have fun. Our 2 main events, featuring live music by Ian Robertson and his Band, continue to be successful. For the third consecutive year, tickets were sold out for our Christmas Dance which has become a popular event for many dancers from other clubs. Our fundraising Spring Charity Dance highlights our commitment to the community and, this year, the profits from this event will benefit two charities, the 72

MS Centre, Halton and Lindengate in Wendover. Providing tuition for all dancers is very important so we’ve introduced a more formal Beginners’ Course to cover the basics and our more experienced dancers have benefited from 2 tuition evenings, all of which has resulted in an overall improvement in style and confidence. This confidence was translated into action recently when 12 of our experienced dancers took part in a demonstration for members of The Forget me Not Club in Prestwood. What an enjoyable time an ideal way to share our love of dancing with the wider community followed by afternoon tea! We resume dancing on 6 September when new dancers will be very welcome. Book Review
Holiday Reads Sun-lounger worthy reads to keep you occupied this summer. Salvage the Bones – Jesmyn Ward With so many new releases each year, it’s all too easy for books to get buried in the sands of time. Salvage the Bones deserves to be unburied. 15-year-old Esch lives with her three brothers, her alcoholic father and the memory of her mother in a crumbling shack in Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina is on the way and the family is woefully unprepared. If you’re a fan of Alice Walker or Harper Lee, and love getting lost in a devastatingly beautiful read, this one is for you. I Still Dream – James Smythe It’s 1997. In between making mix-tapes and arguing with her mum, Laura Bow finds time to create a computer programme. She calls it Organon. At first, Organon is just something to tell her thoughts and feelings to – an online journal that talks back. But as the years pass, it becomes clear that Laura has created an Artificial Intelligence with more potential than she could ever have imagined. A gripping read.

Wishes Under the Willow Tree – Phaedra Patrick Benedict Stone is a jeweller in a quiet country village, as was his father before him. Benedict’s marriage is going through a rocky patch, so the last thing he needs is a teenage niece he’s never met turning up on his doorstep. Together, the unlikely duo work to win Benedict’s wife back. Wishes Under the Willow Tree is an enjoyable, easy read, and as added bonus, you’ll learn a little about gem stones along the way. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart – Holly Ringland Alice spends her days hiding from her father and helping her bruised, fragile mother tend to the garden. She’s kept away from school, family and the local village. But then one day tragedy strikes and Alice’s world starts to open up. Can she put her demons aside, or is she destined to repeat her parents’ mistakes? A perfect summer read, although you may find it a struggle to tear yourself away. The Family Next Door – Sally Hepworth Pleasant Court is a nice neighbourhood, full of respectable families. People don’t talk about their problems. So when Isabelle Heatherington, single and attractive, moves in, she ruffles more than a few feathers. The secrets people have tried so hard to bury start coming out, as Isabelle seems to know rather a lot about her new neighbours. An enjoyable domestic drama, with a few twists and turns to keep you sitting by the pool until the sun goes down. How I Lose You – Kate McNaughton How I Lose You is a love story, told backwards. Eva’s husband Adam dies in chapter one. As Eva struggles to come to terms with her loss, we learn about their story in a series of flashbacks. Back in the present day, Eva stumbles across an email in Adam’s inbox that suggests he was hiding something. In her search to uncover his secret, Eva discovers shocking truths about herself.

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

DIY SOS for handy people to help maintain local hospice care charity shops If you’re handy with a hammer, a dab-hand with a drill or precise with a paintbrush and are keen to put a bit of spare time to good use, you could be just the kind of practical person needed by Rennie Grove Hospice Care. The local charity has issued a “DIY SOS” to a variety of Bucks and Herts-based people who each have practical skills like carpentry, painting and decorating, plumbing and similar DIY skills to come forward and volunteer to help maintain Rennie Grove’s growing chain of busy shops. Located in 27 key locations across Bucks and Herts, the shops play an important role in generating much-needed funds for the charity’s responsive 24/7 hospice at home care for local adults and children with life-limiting conditions and their families. But the outlets are not just a popular source of quality pre-loved goods at irresistible prices; they also provide a high street window into the range of Rennie Grove care and support services - and so it is essential that they are always smart, safe and welcoming.
76
Deborah Gould, Director of Retail and Trading at Rennie Grove explains: “Our 27 shops are the face of Rennie Grove in the community and generate an income of £2.6 million each year so it is really important that they are maintained to a high standard. We want our customers to enjoy browsing in a tasteful environment and our volunteers and staff to have a comfortable and stylish place to work. Rennie Grove’s shops are no different to other retailers in that we have real pride in what we offer and want to present our charity’s values and services in the best possible light. We also need to make sure that we operate in line with current health and safety legislation and our team of maintenance volunteers are absolutely key to ensuring that we achieve all of this”. “What we need is people we can call on for simple repairs such as changing light bulbs, a bit of painting, fixing toilets that won’t flush or putting shelves up for example,” adds Deborah. Please visit www.renniegrove.org/ volunteer and complete our online enquiry form, call 01442 890222 or email volunteer@renniegrove.org to find out more about this role.

Health
Weight loss & General Health
Have you ever tried a weight loss program that worked for a friend but not for you? Or are you eating really well and exercising and the weight is still not shifting? In cases like these it probably means that the weight loss diet you are using isn’t right for your metabolism but does suit you friend, or maybe the exercise program you are using is not at the correct intensity for you. Let’s look at two simple examples, perhaps you are on a low fat diet, and it isn’t working, this would indicate that potentially you would function better on a diet that is higher in protein and fats than carbohydrate. Or it might be the other way around for you and you might lose weight on a more vegetarian / carbohydrate diet. What about exercise? If you are working really intensely, but at the same time you have a lot of

stress in your life, your body may take the intense exercise as more stress and actually hold on to the weight in a protective manner, for future fuel! A key component to digestive health is movement. Movement will cause either expansion or contraction of the body. There are many reasons we might gain weight – with the main causes being stress, disease, illness or injury – and quite often there is little we can do to combat it just by eating healthily. Instead, by addressing the internal, deeper issues within your body, an osteopath is able to guide you through and help you discover an effective, natural way to lose weight and stay healthy.

Set in a small, deeply religious town in Louisiana during the 1950s. A poor farming family led by father, Boone, and his three children, Swallow,
Brat, and Poor Baby, have recently buried their mother, and as Christmas approaches the family cannot afford any presents or luxuries, and are desperate to find something to hold on to. One day, they find a stranger hiding in their run-down barn. Unknown to the children The Man is probably an escaped convict, but Swallow seizes on the idea that he is Jesus and the rumour quickly spreads amongst the children of the town. Meanwhile, the town is on the lookout for the runaway convict, urged by their Sheriff to stay vigilant. Mysteriously, The Man has disappeared and Boone realizes that Swallow still needs him to depend upon and restore her faith in their family unit. With a live orchestra, this stunning full-scale production is sure to send shivers down your spine. Don’t miss out! Book now by visiting atgtickets. com/aylesbury (bkg fee) or call 0844 871 7607 (calls cost up to 7p per min plus phone company’s access charge).
