Welcome to the July/August issue of Chiltern View Magazine. We do hope you like our front cover and that it inspires you to create your own perfect summer picnic, either at home or out and about in the glorious Chiltern countryside. There are so many wonderful spots to choose from locally, making it very difficult to select just one, but this is our pick of the best: Wendover Woods; fabulous views and a fitness trail for the more energetic, Tring Reservoir; views, walks, picnic spots and plenty of interesting birdlife, Hughenden Park; sweeping views along the Wye Valley and extensive parkland, Combe Hill; the highest point in the Chilterns with amazing panoramic

views over the surrounding Vale of Aylesbury from the monument. We even have a couple of recipes to help you build your own picnic. Our Nutritional Article on page 62 gives you some great tips about getting the most out of outdoor eating and an easy but tasty, barbeque dish. Beverley Glock on page 74, shares her delicious recipe for Summer Berry Cakes which adds that ‘special something’ to a lovely, summer picnic. Well done to all who have finished exams. Hopefully the weather will be nice, and you can all enjoy a break after all your hard work. The magazine is full of things to do, competitions to enter and ideas to get the best out of the summer. Hopefully something for everybody! Until the next time

Caversham Heights to Mapledurham: Stile-free Walk A varied walk through rolling Chilterns countryside and the Mapledurham estate. The route takes you through woodlands and open countryside with some wonderful views over the River Thames. Mapledurham House and Watermill are situated by the River Thames. Distance: 4.1miles Start: There is parking at the Mapledurham playing fields just off the Woodcote Road (A4074). Access Information: This is an undulating walk with some good views. There is a steep section which can be slippery at times through Park Wood just before you arrive at the meadow Refreshments: The Pack Saddle bar and restaurant at Chazey Heath, Tel 0118 9463000 www.thepacksaddle.com Route: Exit from the Playing Fields, turn left along the Woodcote Road and take the third turning left along the track opposite Crispin Close. Continue along this to a kissing gate at the edge of the golf course. Walk across the field to another kissing gate, just after the kissing gate turn right into Jackson’s Lane (an unsurfaced track) Walk along this for about 100 yards then turn left onto an estate road. Continue for 100 yards and take a footpath to the right 1 along the side of the golf course. 2 Continue down and up a bit until a footpath is reached on the left. Turn left onto this path 3 and continue past Rose Farm until a junction of roads is reached 4 . Go through the kissing gate directly opposite and continue straight ahead on this path through Park Wood, past the Pan statue, down the hill and across a meadow via a couple of kissing gates.

12

When you reach the estate road at point 5 , you can either turn left to continue the walk, or to go to Mapledurham House, the Watermill and Church turn right and then shortly left. There is generally access to the Church but not the river when the House is closed. From 5 continue on the estate road for just under 1.5 miles then take a footpath to the left which leads up Gravel Hill. 6 Towards the top of the hill the path turns to the right, 7 follow this until Jackson’s Lane bridleway is reached. Turn left onto this bridleway 8 and continue for just under half a mile, then take the footpath on the right back to Blagrave Farm and the Mapledurham Playing Fields. This walk is one of a series produced by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can download the route in more detail from www.chilternsaonb.org.

A Blue Plaque is the Inspiration Thame has been in the national news recently because of the Town Council’s (rejected) proposal to erect red plaques commemorating the town’s fictitious involvement in a television series. Thame does however boast several blue plaques featuring famous real people who lived in the town, one of whom, the poet W.B. Yeats, is the inspiration for Thame Chamber Choir’s recently-announced Choral Composition Competition. Launched as part of the choir’s 20th anniversary celebrations, the contest asks entrants to set any Yeats poem of their choice; entries will be judged by international composers and conductors Bob Chilcott and James Burton, as well as the choir’s Musical Director Duncan Aspden and professional

pianist and singer Anna Markland. The winning composition will be premièred at the choir’s concert during the 2019 Thame Arts & Literature Festival, and the composer will receive a prize of £1000. Full details of how to enter are on the choir’s website, www.thamechamberchoir.org.

Win A Pair of Tickets for a Midsomer Tour! Are you a fan of the popular ITV series Midsomer Murders? Did you know that it’s one of the longest-running TV detective dramas, since first being televised in 1997? It’s still going strong today, watched by 6.5 million in the UK and millions more in over 100 countries around the world. The latest series of Midsomer Murders – series 20 - began airing earlier this year. It’s been filmed all over ‘Midsomer County’ – otherwise known as Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Did you know that Thame is one of the most used filming locations, with an amazing 22 locations in the town centre? It features as Causton or as one of the many villages in Midsomer. Buildings like the Town Hall, Thame Museum, Rumsey’s Chocolaterie, the Swan Hotel, the Spread Eagle Hotel, the Coffee House and the Black Horse Pub & Brasserie have appeared in various episodes.

You can walk round the town with a free Thame Midsomer Trail leaflet (available at the Town Hall Information Centre) and view the locations for yourself, but you’ll learn so much more about Midsomer and the history of Thame when you join one of our popular Midsomer walking tours. These tours are held weekly between April and October, led by specially trained guides. Your guide will point out Midsomer filming locations, talk about their appearance in Midsomer Murders, and give you interesting snippets about Thame’s historic past as well. The tour lasts about an hour and takes place every Wednesday at 11.00am until 30th October. It starts inside Thame Museum (79 High Street, OX9 3AE). Tickets are £7.50 each and may be purchased online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/thamemidsomer. Alternatively, turn up on the day and pay at the Museum. If you can’t make the Wednesday tour, bespoke tours are possible for groups of at least four (contact thamemidsomertours@gmail.com for details).

Enter our Midsomer Competition! Three lucky winners will win a pair of tickets for a Midsomer Tour of Thame when the draw takes place on Friday 26th July. If you’d like to win a pair of tickets, answer this question –

How many Midsomer filming locations are there in Thame town centre? Email your answer, along with your name & address to salesprv@live.co.uk by Friday 26th July

Book Review

Holiday Reads Books to while away the summer evenings with The Library of Lost and Found – Phaedra Patrick Librarian Martha Storm finds a book containing a dedication from her grandmother. But the dedication is dated several years after her grandmother supposedly died. The book sets Martha out on a quest that will rock her safe, predictable life and remind her of who she really is. A hugely enjoyable, warm hug of a book. Internment – Samira Ahmed Set ‘15 minutes into the future’, Internment tells the story of 17-year-old Layla, who is sent to a Muslim-American internment camp in the middle of the Californian desert. Similar to the real Japanese-American internment camps of World War II, this camp is a dangerous place to stand out. Layla’s parents want her to keep her head down and not attract the attention of the vicious camp director. But Layla is prepared to risk her life for her freedom. A powerful page-turner about the price of turning a blind eye to bigotry. A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World – C. A. Fletcher Griz is growing up in a postapocalyptic world where mass-infertility has decimated the human population. His community is tiny and life is difficult. When a stranger 30

steals the family’s dog, Griz sets out to get her back, on a journey that will take him from his tiny island on the Outer Hebrides across Scotland and Northern England. Perfect for fans of The Road and Station’s Eleven. Stone Mothers – Erin Kelly Marianne is back in her home village, and desperate to keep a secret hidden that could destroy the life she’s built over the last 30 years. A secret that ties her to her childhood sweetheart, Jesse, as well as the MP responsible for shutting down the local asylum. This chilling psychological tale is a slowburner but well worth sticking with. The Dollmaker – Nina Allan Andrew and Bramber start writing to each other because of their shared interest in dolls. As their friendship grows, Andrew decides to visit Bramber at the institution she calls home. Andrew and Bramber’s story is interspersed with tales written by another doll-lover, Ewa Chaplin, which Andrew reads on his journey. A beautiful, strange, multi-layered book you’ll want to keep reading long after the sun has gone down. Outlander – Diana Gabaldon If your idea of the perfect holiday is spending several days on a sun lounger with a good book, then the Outlander series could be just what you’re looking for. On a trip to the Scottish Highlands, Claire Randall steps through a circle of stones and finds herself transported from 1946 to 1743, where she’s taken prisoner by Scottish outlaws. The hit TV show is now into its fourth season and the books are even better.

Monuments to a ladies’ man Behind every great man, the old saying goes, there’s a great woman – and maybe a visit to Hughenden Manor proves it. Benjamin Disraeli bought the estate in 1848, on his way to becoming a two-time Prime Minister. Unlike most other leading politicians of the time, Disraeli hadn’t been to public school or university and wasn’t born into wealth. But if you look round the house – now a National Trust property – you can find traces of the female patrons who helped him on his way. The most important in many ways was his wife Mary Anne, whom he married in 1839 when she was 47 (and a wealthy widow) and he was 35. Mary Anne’s money helped Disraeli pay off his debts, and she was devoted to him utterly until her death in 1872. A portrait of Mary Anne is in the drawing room; a marble copy of one of her feet sits in what is now the library. (Facsimiles of body parts were a popular form of ornament in those days.) Our favourite item though, is probably the carriage door, now hanging on a wall at one end of the ground floor, in which Mary Anne trapped her fingers while travelling with her husband. Legend has it that she showed no reaction to this painful event until Disraeli was out of earshot. Mary Anne and her husband are buried together outside the east end of the Church of St Michael and All Angels in Hughenden Park, next to Sarah Brydges Williams – an older widow with whom Disraeli became friends. She left £30,000 in her will (the equivalent of well over £1.5 million today) with which he paid off the mortgage on Hughenden. Inside the church, look for a

unique monument as a clue to a third female patron: a memorial to Disraeli from Queen Victoria, the only example of a reigning British monarch honouring a subject in this way. There’s also a replica portrait of Victoria in the house’s drawing room. After an unpromising start to their dealings, the Queen developed much affection for Disraeli (he assiduously flattered her, and she disliked his rival William Gladstone) and regularly sent him gifts. It would be many years after Disraeli’s death in 1881 before British women could vote, and almost a century before the first female British Prime Minister. But without the women in his life, as Hughenden reminds us, Disraeli might never have achieved much at all. Neil Matthews is the co-author, with his wife Helen, of Slow Travel: The Chilterns and the Thames Valley, a new guidebook available online (bradtguides.com) or in local bookshops.

Kenzo’s Diary - A dog’s life 3 Since I’ve been a young pup, I’ve always loved my garden. It’s my place to relax, my place to dig, and my place to destroy. To try and keep my adventurousness at bay, my hoomans built a wall between me and the rest of MY garden, a wall that I have spent months devising a plan to conquer. Today I breached the wall, the final stages were complete, I had infiltrated what the hoomans call, ‘the darkside’. Let’s start from the beginning, so you can get a feel for my cunning and devious plan! Firstly, I selected an optimum break through point. You see, behind my tree in the back-right corner is a no-go for the hoomans as I have built my own barricade of little trees and my guards; teddy and bumble bee, (the hoomans call them ‘toyz’). Over a period of months, I dug; I dug in a slow, steady and stealthy pace that left the hoomans clueless. They don’t realise small changes like this as they’re busy cleaning my mess; a distraction. Today the trench was deep enough, and I spread flat like a starfish, squeezing every inch of my ‘cuddly bits’, under the fence.

I breached the chicken wire, emerging on unknown territory, I was in ‘the darkside’, behind enemy lines. My excitement took control of me, my mind flooded with exhilaration, I had a bad case of ‘the zoomies’. An uncontrollable grin struck my face as I sprinted hysterically in circles in my new and well-earnt land. I regained conscious ability over my 4 speeding limbs quickly, knowing I was still in no-mans-land and if I’m spotted or heard now I will be shut in the ‘kit chin’ for a very long 15 minutes, that’s a long time in dog time. I snuck silently to the far ends of ‘the darkside’, a place I’ve only heard about in stories and seen in my dreams. Expecting miles of fields or hundreds of doggo playmates; what I saw took the air from my lungs… A tall wooden fence stood looking down on me, a second wall only Trump would be proud of! I realised I had another purpose. What’s beyond ‘the darkside’? I WILL find out.

Health

Are Instagram and other Social Media, bad for young peoples’ mental and physical health? Teens spend as much as nine hours per day on social media, according to a recent study by Common Sense Media. That mindboggling statistic means that when they’re not in school or sleeping, teens are glued to their phones, where they interact with friends and the rest of the world through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook etc. But is it good for them? While it’s a way to connect with friends and information, which can be positive, the “always-on” aspect of social media can be exhausting. It can take a toll on mental and physical health. The UK’s Royal Society for Public Health surveyed 1,500 teens and young adults about their social media habits. They found that digital social networks are associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying and a

40

“fear of missing out (FOMO).” They can also foster a negative body image and poor sleep habits. This constant comparison to unrealistic ideals can result in low self-esteem, self-doubt and poor body image. It can also result in problems such as “text neck”. Research does suggest that the broader problem is more likely to stem from a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of movement generally. Keen to prevent difficulties, David, as an Osteopath, understands that if a person does less exercise and stays in a static position with screen-time, there is a higher risk of developing spinal pain and neck pain.

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

Towersey Festival A summer highlight since 1965, the renowned Towersey Festival never disappoints, with a packed line-up of established and emerging artists, and so much more. Oxfordshire’s longest-running music festival, Towersey, returns over August Bank Holiday weekend for four days of top-flight entertainment and fun. Shanty singers Fisherman’s Friends, whose rise to fame was recently turned into a hit movie, take to the stage on opening night (23 Aug). Also on Friday’s bill are The Unthanks, the hotly tipped Beans On Toast, Britpop songster Chris Helme (ex-Seahorses) and Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. Expect to hear Harley perform such enduring hits as Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) and Here Comes The Sun. Saturday (24 Aug) boasts sets from acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Newton Faulkner (who spent more than a year in the charts with his debut album, Hand Built By Robots), and The Jam’s bassist Bruce Foxton, who’ll be performing many of the band’s greatest hits with the explosive From The Jam. Original Two-Tone ska heroes The Selecter celebrate their 40th anniversary on Sunday (25 Aug), along with Dublin’s mighty Hothouse Flowers, folk

star Seth Lakeman, and Show Of Hands’ Steve Knightly. Finally, Monday (26 Aug) welcomes The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, and an exclusive concert celebrating the life and times of Roy Bailey, the late folk singer and activist whose regular afternoon concerts would pack out Towersey. Among the many guests paying tribute to Roy, who passed away in November, are Tom Robinson, Martin Simpson and Stephen Taberner (The Spooky Men’s Chorale). Away from the main stages, the festival also boasts a dedicated dance tent, and a wide range of activities for younger visitors as part of their All About Children and Youth strands. These include everything from drop in games, workshops and music sessions, to special family-friendly performances. For those who only want a taste of the festival, a Festival Green ticket (£12/ £10 adv) offers access to the well-stocked real ale bar, complete with its rolling all-day music programme, and the full range of street food vendors and stalls. There’s also roaming performers, including circus acts, marvellous magicians and the vibrant, marching Frumptarn Guggenband, and loads to do in the ever-expanding fun-packed and family-friendly Creative Quarter - which this year has an environmental theme. Towersey Festival runs from Friday 23 to Monday 26 August 2019 at Thame Showground. Tickets from £12/£10 (Festival Green only); from £35 (Adult Day Ticket; full festival). Car parking and under 5’s FREE. See: www.towerseyfestival.com

Budget Friendly Family Fun Have fun with the kids this summer, without breaking the bank. Kids Pass Kids Pass gives you 40% off cinema tickets and money off a range of restaurants and days out. You can even get discounts on holidays with Haven, Butlins, Eurocamp and other companies. The pass costs around £40 a year, but a month’s trial costs just £1. Think small Check whether your local amateur dramatics society is performing any plays suitable for families. Smaller venues are a lot cheaper than well-known theatres and young children really won’t care if an actor is an award-winning thespian or Mark from the corner shop. Older kids could even join the drama youth group. Don’t discount larger theatres altogether however, as some offer discounts during the summer holidays. Children can attend a host of London shows for free during August’s Kids Week, as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult – see www.officiallondontheatre.com/ kidsweek. Party time Clubbing together with other parents can help to keep costs down. Having a kids’ party at a soft-play centre, theme park, pottery barn or other activity centre often costs less per head than buying the activity and food separately for each child. Use PayPal’s Money Pools to collect the money from everyone. DIY A trip to a pottery workshop usually costs upwards of £10 a child, but if you buy the paints and pots online you can get that down to around £3 or £4 per child. Likewise, a home tie dye kit costs less than £15, which gives you enough dye for around ten children’s Tshirts. Fabric pens are even cheaper (and less messy). Try eBay for kits, T-shirts and other items to dye,

50

such as cotton bags or pillow cases. Bulk buy with other parents to save money. Cheap days out Keep an eye on social media and www.familiesonline.co.uk for cheap days out. Libraries and councils sometimes organise holiday activities, such as storytelling and crafts. Country fairs often have lots on for kids and entrance is often free for under-16s as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult. (Tickets are usually cheaper if they’re bought in advance.) For less than £15 for one adult and four children, you could enjoy a day out with aerobatics displays, ferret racing, motocross displays, puppet shows and more. Just remember to pack a cool bag with a picnic and ice pops, otherwise you’ll spend a small fortune on hotdogs, chips and ice-cream. Cashback Cashback sites such as Quidco and Topcashback give you money back every time you buy something online from one of their retail partners. They also offer discounts. When we checked, Quidco was advertising a fourteen-day Walt Disney pass for the price of seven days, and money off various flights. If you register your credit and debit cards with Quidco, you can also earn money when you shop on the high street, whether you’re buying kids’ clothes or treating the family to lunch out.

Gardening

Askett Nurseries Last summer was a real scorcher. Day upon day of hot, sunny weather with hardly any rain. Lots of us enjoyed the soaring temperatures and the wall to wall sunshine, but many struggled with the constant heat. As did the garden. Despite lots of watering, lawns and plants were not happy with the conditions. So, with the strong possibility that climate change will lead to much warmer summers in the near future, it would be prudent for gardeners when they are planting out new beds, to bear in mind that some plants are better suited to hotter, drier conditions than others. Before planting a new bed, some preparation will pay dividends. Getting as much organic matter into the new ground will really help your plants to cope with dry periods. Farmyard manure and composted bark will add body and substance to the soil, helping to retain moisture. Don’t add too much fertilizer, if you overfeed the bed this will help to increase the amount of fresh new lush vegetation, meaning your new plants will become more and more thirsty. Plants that thrive in dry conditions actually prefer a poorer soil. If you decide to go for some shrubs, look for Abelia, Buxus or Ceanothus. All are evergreens and can adapt to hot, arid sites. Ceanothus is a large family of evergreen blue flowering shrubs with more prostrate 52

varieties such as Thyrsiflorus Repens, which only gets to around a metre high, whilst Concha will grow to an impressive 4 metres, so before choosing one, do your homework. Abelia Grandiflora is a medium sized shrub that grows to around 2.5 metres high, produces a display of pale pink fragrant flowers and is happy either in the soil or a container. Lavender is a safe choice for a dry bed. Needing a sunny spot and good drainage, varieties such as Hidcote and Munstead will thrive during a hot summer as well as encouraging bees into your garden. As a guide, plants with silver foliage are best suited to these conditions, so seek out Artemesia, Santolina and Stachys. They will do you proud. Here’s hoping we are set for a tremendous summer!

Pet Health

Canine Heat Stroke By Dr Kathryn Miller BVSc CertAVP(SAM) MRCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Medicine

With summer on route, many of us are looking forward to the warmer weather. However, it is very important to remember that your canine companion is not able to regulate their temperature in the same way as we can. They must wear their highly insulated fur coats all year round, so heat stroke can be a real risk. What is heat stroke? Heat stroke is a dangerous condition that occurs when a dog’s core body temperature rises above 40 degrees Celsius. All dogs are susceptible in the right conditions, however dogs that are obese, thick-coated or brachycephalic (short nosed) are even more sensitive. What causes heat stroke? There are two types of heat stroke: Exertional – this happens when exercising a dog on a hot day. Dogs take 60 days to acclimate to hot weather, but rarely does the British weather allow for this acclimatisation. Non exertional – this can occur without exercise, when a dog is kept in an environment that doesn’t allow it to keep cool (remember dogs cannot sweat like people). This could be a poorly ventilated room, a car, or even in a garden with no water source. What are the signs of heat stroke? Often the first signs are agitation and distress, such as barking, drooling, panting or excessive thirst. As the condition progresses, you may notice your dog’s gums/tongue turning a red or purple colour. Without treatment, this can progress to staggering/weakness, collapse, seizures and coma.

58

What to do if you are worried your dog has heat stroke? Call your vet immediately for advice as without prompt treatment this condition can result in death via irreversible internal organ damage. Place a cool wet towel over your dog whilst transporting to the vets. DO NOT immerse your dog in cold water, as this can lead to shock and worsening of the condition. Tips to keep your dog cool on a hot day. Prevention is always better than cure. It is important to restrict exercise on hot days, walking early in the morning or late in the evening. Take a water bottle with you. Never leave your dog in a conservatory/poorly ventilated room. Make sure your dog has access to shade, and fresh drinking water. A soaked towel can be useful to keep your dog cool, or you can spritz with water. NEVER leave your dog in the car – even for short periods of time, even with the windows open. If you have any concerns at all, then please call Crossroads Veterinary Centre on 01494 459095 for 24/7 advice.

Outdoor Eating With the warmer weather and longer days, it is fun to enjoy meals outdoors. Here are a few tips to help you keep safe from the hot coals and the risk of food poisoning, so that you can enjoy some relaxation and tasty food in your leisure time. 1. Keep all your perishable ingredients in the fridge until you’re ready to serve them. 2. All frozen meat should be thoroughly thawed before you put it on the barbecue, otherwise they may appear cooked but still be raw on the inside. 3. If you touch raw meat or fish, thoroughly wash your hands before touching cooked foods and salads

Recipe idea - sheesh kebab • juice of half lemon • 450g/1lb lamb mince • 1 tablespoon oil • 55g/2oz fresh coriander leaves (washed and chopped) • 4 cloves garlic (crushed) • 4 green chillies (de-seeded and chopped) • ½ tsp coriander powder • 1 tsp cumin powder • ½ tsp black peppercorns (crushed) • ½ tsp turmeric powder • ½ tsp garam masala • 2 tsp grated ginger • 1 tsp salt

62

4. Make sure your barbecue is hot enough before you start and turn your meat during cooking time so that it cooks evenly throughout 5. Do not use leftover marinade as a sauce unless it is first cooked 6. Don’t leave food out in direct sunlight and don’t leave food out for more than two hours. 7. Barbecues can be dangerous - take care especially when children are around

More information 1. Mix all ingredients together 2. squeeze into 8 small sausage shapes or burgers - place on a metal stick if you wish 3. cook thoroughly on the BBQ (or in the oven/ under grill) 4. enjoy! https://www.bbc.com/food/recipes/ lambkebabs_2214 more information https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes/bbq-picnic Tanya Wright Specialist Allergy Dietitian

Shop till you drop in Thame Thanks to updated Town Centre Guides Thame today boasts a new and updated Town Centre Map that replaces a previous shopping guide that had long been out of date. The map will help visitors to the town, locate a specific business using a handy category-based key, as well as highlighting significant points of interest and places to visit. Thame’s Museum, Markets, Midsomer Murders tours and The Players Theatre are all showcased. Alongside this there are events listing for the year. These spaces will regularly be overlaid by current flyers that promote opportunities and events taking place in Thame, giving visitors current information, relevant at the time they visit the town. This new guide is displayed in 8 locations around the town centre and also aims to help residents find out more about the services available to them on their door step, encouraging more people to shop local, and support their local High Street. Sam Osborne – the designer behind the art work for the Map, and a local Thame resident stated ‘I’ve lived in Thame for years and there are still places I had no idea existed until I worked on this project’. In a time when so many town centres are struggling, Thame town centre remains vibrant and alive. One of the groups that has played a key role in this is 21st Century Thame, the partnership behind these new maps. The group was keen to see the Shopping Guides updated, and designed to ensure relevant information can be replaced easily when needed. The design allows temporary updates to the key to overlay the original map, and thanks to a new partnership with Chiltern View Magazines, 72

there will be a full reprint annually to ensure that the project is sustainable for future years 21st Century Thame is a partnership that engages businesses, local organisations and the local authorities, including Thame Town Council. Together it facilitates projects such as these guides, which enhance the town for residents, businesses and visitors alike. The group is always looking for more people to get involved, so if you think you can play a part in making Thame a better place to live, work and play then get in touch through admin@thame4me.co.uk

Recipe

Summer berry cakes

3. Add the eggs and flour together, at the same time, and mix well.

A taste of summer in a cupcake. Avoid using strawberries in the cakes as they tend to go soggy when cooked, they’re fine for the topping.

5. Split the mixture evenly between the 12 cupcake cases in a muffin tin and bake them in the oven for 20-25 minutes. (AGA: 15-20 minutes with the plain cold shelf on the second set of runners).

Ingredients: for 12 cupcakes 150g soft butter or margarine 150g caster sugar 3 eggs 150g self raising flour 300g mixed berries such as raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, blackberries etc (fresh or frozen and defrosted) Ingredients: for the topping 100g mixed berries as above 2 tablespoons caster sugar How to make the summer berry cakes… WASH YOUR HANDS 1. Preheat the oven on to 180c/gas 4/AGA roasting oven, shelf on oven floor. 2. Cream the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.

4. Gently stir in the berries, being careful not to break them.

6. Place the berries for the topping in a pan with the caster sugar and heat gently for 5-10 minutes until the berries collapse and the juices run. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. 7. Remove the cakes from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack, leave to cool. 8. Scoop out the top of each cake and top with a spoonful of berries and serve. Picnic Tip These work well for picnics. Make the cake in a loaf tin, for easy transportation, (you could even cheat and buy a madeira cake) and take the topping in a Tupperware container. Serve the cake with the topping poured over and some clotted cream on the side. © Beverley Glock 2019

Down the rabbit hole in aid of Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity As part of their 30th Anniversary celebrations, Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity are holding an outdoor musical performance of Alice in Wonderland at Claydon Manor on Saturday 13th July. This nonsensical and fun production will enchant families of all ages. Follow Alice and the White Rabbit as they set off on a colourful, topsy-turvy adventure like no other and meet a host of outlandish characters including the troublesome twins, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the notorious Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire cat and of course, the Mad-as-a-bat Hatter! Children and adults alike are invited to join in the hilarity of seeing this classic story brought vividly to life before having the opportunity to meet the characters after the Show. ‘We really wanted to find an event the whole family could enjoy at the same time as supporting the Hospice and are confident that everyone will have a 82

fantastic afternoon at this amazing performance,’ says Vicky James, Events Manager at the Charity. The show will take place at 2.30pm on Saturday 13th July on the beautiful Claydon Estate in Buckinghamshire. St Hugh’s Close | Stokenchurch Are you aged over 60? Are you considering downsizing or are you in need of sheltered accommodation? Buckinghamshire Housing Association (Bucks Housing) owns St Hugh’s Close, a sheltered housing scheme for the over 60’s, located in the heart of the village of Stokenchurch. It has been designed to help residents live independently whilst offering security and peace of mind. The purpose-built properties consist of 32 one and two-bedroom bungalows and two one-bedroom flats. Each property is self-contained, with its own front door.
