Editors’Letter Welcome to the July/August issue of Chiltern View magazine. This is our summer issue and, hopefully, by the time you read this the weather will be set to fair and we will all be enjoying some lovely, warm sunshine. This time of year includes the long school holidays so, with that in mind, we have a wonderful competition - just for the adults this time. Beerginvino have been kind enough to offer a tasting afternoon, so have a look at their advert on page 37 and get your entries in. The chance to win a well-earned, adult only afternoon, with drinks! Make sure you arrange a taxi home after! We’ve included some slightly different articles in this issue, with a more contemporary look. We really hope you like them. The barbecue chicken ( P58 ) would be ideal for a warm summer evening meal. We have beauty tips to keep you safe in the sun and a puzzle and cooking page,

especially for the kids. We still have our walks, crossword, health advice, travel ideas and book review, plus some local articles as well. Hopefully, there is something for everyone. For all our advertisers, we continue to print and distribute our magazines every other month. We make sure these are hand delivered through doors of homes and businesses by our wonderful, local team. We are extremely grateful to all of them, as they have continued to get our magazines out despite all the difficulties of the last year. Sun Savvy Your guide to protecting your skin throughout the warmer months. Preparation If you want to be sun savvy, then preparation is the key. Just as you wouldn’t leave a new-born in the sun without protection, your own skin is also more vulnerable after a winter spent locked inside, which is why wearing a good SPF is vital. Fortunately, many makeup and skincare brands now include sunscreen in their moisturisers and foundations, making it far easier to include facial protection in your day-to-day routine - it may seem like a strange concept to wear sun cream throughout the year, but ultraviolet rays are always present and penetrate clouds. Cost As with most things in life you get what you pay for, and it really is worth investing in some top-notch sun protection.

Firstly, it is important to understand what the SPF factor means. Contrary to popular belief, a higher SPF doesn’t mean that a factor 50 offers a higher level of protection than say, a factor 15. This is because the SPF number tells you how much longer it will take for your skin to burn than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen at all. So if you’re wearing 50 SPF, it will take 50 times longer for your skin to turn red than if you weren’t wearing it. Secondly, make sure your sunscreen offers ‘broadspectrum protection’ rather than just SPF which only measures your skin’s ability to block UVB rays – these rays damage the outer layers of your skin and can cause sunburn and even blistering. Broad spectrum products, however, also protect your skin from UVA rays which are the more insidious of the two as they penetrate your skin at a deeper level and are

proven to contribute to the development of skin cancer. Be individual Be sure to choose a sunscreen that is tailored to your individual needs. If you have sensitive skin or want to use it on your face, then invest in a product that is sympathetic to those needs. Or if the sun cream is for your children who are spending the day by the pool, make sure it is waterproof and easy to apply. Be realistic While sunscreen works wonders, there are areas it cannot protect, such as your scalp and your eyes. If you’re not a hat person you may want to consider a head scarf or bandana, and when it comes to your eyes, well… who doesn’t look cool in a pair of sunglasses? For really scorching summer days you may want to consider avoiding the sun altogether; and remember, there is no such thing as a safe suntan!

Kop Hill Climb News Following all the frustrations and disappointments of 2020, the organisers of KHC have announced that they will be pressing ahead with a full event on the weekend of September 25/26 this year. This decision has been taken in the light of the remarkable success of the national vaccination programme, the fact that the event is still many weeks in the future and a record rate of entries for the hill run. KHC did hold a virtual event in September last year, which

raised over £15,000 for its local charities. The KHC volunteers were recognised last year by having a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service bestowed upon them. Given COVID restrictions, the ceremony couldn’t take place until May 25, 2021, but the presentation took place at Penn House where The Countess Howe, the recently-appointed new Lord-Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, made the Award to Nick Jeffery, the Chief Steward. In her address, The Countess Howe stressed both the longevity of the event and the dedication of the

volunteers to a cause which has to date raised over £750,000 for local charities and good causes. KHC was also fortunate enough to be one of the features in an episode of the new series of Great British Railway Journeys, featuring Michael Portillo. It was filmed in Autumn 2020 and broadcast on BBC2 on April 27, but is still available on BBC iPlayer. Early Bird tickets for the event are now on sale at www.kophillclimb.org.uk

Research done in hospitals, offices, and schools has found that even a simple plant in a room can have a significant impact on stress and anxiety.

Nature restores One of the most intriguing areas of current research is the impact of nature on general wellbeing. Those interviewed said their mood improved after spending time outside, changing from depressed, stressed, and anxious to more calm and balanced. Too much time in front of screens is deadly “Nature deprivation,” a lack of time in the natural world, has been associated, unsurprisingly, with depression. Stokenchurch Dog Rescue My name is Buddy; I’m a Terrier Mix and about 7 years old I am a cheeky lad looking for an adult only home who can understand my quirks. My dog carers are very patient with me and give me the space I need, as I can be a little nervous initially of new surroundings and people. However, if you take your time, I will slowly come around. I love my squeaky ball, and this is usually a great way to start building a bond with me. I’ve been told that I’m a clever little chap, as I already know a lot of commands, but I would benefit from the stimulation that comes with extra training, as this would also

give me the opportunity to bond with my new owner. I’ve also been told that I may do well with some calming scent work as I have a great nose on me and I love to sniff – this would also keep my clever mind active! I will require a home with a good sized, fully enclosed garden with a 5-foot fence. Red Kite Social Distancing Walk Summary This circular, stile free walk passes through beautiful Chiltern valleys where red kites are abundant. You can also enjoy panoramic views, ancient beech woods and rolling farmland. Length: 4.5 miles (Allow 2½ hours) Start & finish: Capital Gardens, Studley Green Garden Centre, Studley Green HP14 3UX. Please use the car park near the road Access Information: Easy walking on good paths which can be muddy after rain. One narrow path, one short steep climb and one gate Food & drink: Café at the garden centre and the Dashwood Arms Route From the Garden Centre, cross the main road and turn right along the pavement. Go over St Francis Road, walk forward a few metres and turn left down the driveway to a house called Nutfield. 1 - Fork left along a narrow path down to a lane. Turn left

to a road junction and turn right for 100m to where the tarmac ends. Stay ahead and continue to a path junction just inside Bottom Wood. 2 – Keep ahead and follow the wide track for over 1 mile to the edge of the wood. 3 - Follow the track round to the left and straight on to the main road. Cross to Chipps Lane opposite, walk along for 20m and take the bridleway on the right. 4 - Follow the wide track to reach a path junction just before the end of a wood.

7 - At the entrance to the site, stay straight ahead to a path junction just before the main road. Turn left along the bridleway as it runs parallel to the road. Cross over the lane that leads to Horsley Green and either keep straight ahead along the grass verge or cross the main road and turn left along the pavement to return to the Garden Centre. Points of Interest Red Kites are magnificent birds of prey, successfully reintroduced to the Chilterns in the early 1990’s.

5 - Turn right along the right-hand side of the hedgerow to the corner of the next wood. Follow the track round to the left, continue to the right of the hedgerow, and where the hedgerow ends, stay straight ahead towards a wood. Go through a gate into the wood and follow the track to a path on the right just before reaching a road.

A Bottom Wood is a Chiltern Society nature reserve.

6 - Turn right up the steep hill to the top, bear left and follow the path as it winds through the site of the former Wycliffe Centre.

Simply add a few tablespoons of flour to melted butter in a large pan to create a basic roux. Then add both milk and water slowly, mixing as you go. Stir in dried pasta (it doesn’t have to be macaroni), salt, garlic powder and any other seasonings of choice – e.g. cayenne pepper, paprika, mustard, nutmeg etc. – and heat to a simmer. Cook for 10 or so minutes more until pasta is cooked through, then add lots of grated cheese.

Risborough Area Community Bus Risborough Area Community Bus provides daily scheduled Hail & Ride services for all members of the community in and around Princes Risborough and outlying villages. Nearly 2000 passengers use our bus each month. We make the bus available for non-profit making groups when not on scheduled services and we also run outings each month to places of Interest. Our 30 trained, volunteer drivers and our Coordinator work tirelessly to fund and run the service. Drop off for passengers is in the High Street where passengers can connect to buses running to Aylesbury. Thame and High Wycombe.

Anyone can use our bus, young and old alike. The fare for most journeys is only £1.50 and most concessionary cards are accepted. Children aged 16 and under travel free.

We’re hoping to restart our daily scheduled services on 28 June in full. However, that will be contingent on the Government removing all legal restrictions on social distancing on 21 June. If they don’t, we will have to wait longer before restarting but in any event we look forward to seeing our passengers back on the bus as soon as possible.

Let’s Get Wild Turn your garden into a veritable paradise for the birds and the bees by creating a wildflower meadow. Simple, environmentally beneficial and stunningly beautiful. Hemp Agrimony This noble native perennial looks rather striking when grown amid other more colourful wildfl ower varieties. Preferring the shade, it grows tall and untamed and provides a delectable nectar for butterflies.

Ox-eye Daisies Tall and gracious, these white and yellow beauties are easy to grow – they thrive in the sun – though they can also overwhelm a plot if not kept in check. Cornflowers Cornflowers bring a touch of exotic elegance to your flowerbed.
