Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View magazine, where, like the cute little chap on our front cover, we are slowly and happily emerging from Winter hibernation! We are grateful to Tiggywinkles rescue centre for supplying this gorgeous picture and for their very interesting article on P50 about helping wildlife thrive and be safe in your garden. Spring is a time of rejuvenation and hope, and we all look forward to the flowering daffodils and new leaves on the trees. If, like us, you also look

out at your gardens or patios and see that they are very much still hibernating, then why not look through our pages of great local advert r isers and you will find a wide choice of professionals to help rejuvenate your space for spring. Our usual article from Askett Nurseries on P76, can help you with all sort r s of hints and tips on enjoying your garden. We also have our usual choice of amazing competitions, Thame Players (P58), Wycombe Swan (P16) and Aylesbury Theatre (P78) so why not have a go this time and join our winners with a free trip to the theatre. There is also the chance to win tickets to a great day out at Thame Country Fair (P63). Until next time

Recipe

SpiceCrusted

Baked Salmon Fillets This salmon dish is ideal for easy weekend entertaining. Bake the day before and when cold cover and chill in the fridge overnight. Allow to come to room temperature for 30 minutes before serving. Serves 6 Ready in 1 Hour

Ingredients: • 6 x 150g salmon fillets • 2tsp mild chilli powder • 2tsp ground coriander • 2tsp ground cumin • 1/2tsp freshly ground black pepper • Squeeze of lemon or lime juice • 2tbsp olive oil

To Serve

• 6tbsp mayonnaise or soured cream • 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • Zest and juice from 1 lime • Lime wedges and spring onion curls (see tip) to garnish

1.

Preheat the oven to 200C, 180C Fan, Gas 6. Run your fingers along the top of the salmon fillets and remove any fine bones with tweezers. Mix together the spices and rub over the surface of the salmon fillets. Season with a little salt.

2.

Place the salmon pieces in a foil-lined roasting tin. Whisk together the lime or lemon juice and oil and drizzle over the salmon.

12

3.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until the salmon is just cooked to the centre. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely.

4.

Arrange the cold salmon fillets on a platter. Mix together the mayonnaise or soured cream, spring onions and lime zest and juice. Serve the salmon and mayonnaise garnished with lime wedges and spring onion curls.

TIP

To make spring onion curls use a sharp knife to thinly shred a few spring onions. Place in a bowl of iced water and leave in the fridge for about 1 hour until curled. Drain on kitchen paper before using.

The Princes Centre Award Winning Daycare The trustees of the Princes Centre wish to thank all our staff, clients, volunteers and supporters for all they have contributed to make 2017 another successful year. We ended the year on a high note with some thrilling news. Having already won the Regional Award earlier in the year, we beat strong opposition from all over England to win the National Not for Profit Business of the Year - at the SME National Business Awards held at Wembley Stadium. We are really grateful for the massive support we have received from the community. This has enabled us to achieve 5 years of providing a much needed service for the elderly and people with various disabilities or mental health difficulties. We hope this support will continue to 26

enable our remaining refurbishment projects to be completed. The centre was recently able to support Risborough community’s older people’s Christmas lunch. It was an extremely successful event with the local community providing Christmas dinner for older people living alone in Risborough. It was well supported by the town’s mayor, councillors and Reverend David Williams and members of our local Rotary Club and their wives, who arranged the transport for the people attending. A great day was had by all. Maggie Wooster Keyte To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello! My name is Athena; I’m a female German Shepherd Type and about 6 years old. I arrived into the care of SDR through no fault of my own after my owners had only had me for 6 weeks. Upon arrival, it was evident that I had a skin condition which was treated immediately and it has improved greatly; however, this is something that could possibly return or be an on-going issue. There is no previous clinical history on me as it seems that I have had several homes before coming here so nobody is sure why I only have one ear. I am being fed on a grain free diet, which is what would be recommended to any potential new owner. I am currently on medication to help with the ‘itch’, but my fur growth is coming back nicely. Even with my skin issues, it hasn’t stopped me having fun and enjoying myself – I absolutely love playing with a ball (a Kong Jumbler being 30

my absolute favourite). I’m told I am such a wonderful and affect c ionate girl and I just adore being with my handler. As soon as you enter my kennel, I pick up my ball and bring it over to you. I’ve been tested with other dogs and at present I’m quite vocal and reactive around them so my new home should not be with another dog but I may be able to live with a cat. I’m looking for an experienced owner that can provide enough exercise and stimulation for me. Any children I live with should ideally be 11 years and over In the right home, I will make a wonderful and loyal addition. www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695 www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Tiggywinkles Looking out into the grounds of Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital, the signs of a new season are springing into life. Fresh green buds and leaves appearing as a result of the warmer days. The same can be said for wildlife, all the birds are looking busy in readiness for the breeding season. This heralds the start of our busiest time of year, baby season. All imaginable sizes of fragile juvenile patients are brought in to us necessitating specialist and constant care. Baby birds require feeding from dawn until dusk, with the small garden birds demanding feeding every 20 minutes. Baby mammals, such as the minuscule field mice that need feeding every two hours day and night in the early days. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful team of volunteers and seasonal staff who support these diminutive yet demanding patients with the best possible care. Some volunteers take on the role of foster carer in their own homes rearing some of the mammals. Sometimes there are positions available, if these roles interest you and you have the time and dedication required, please do have a look at our website www.tiggywinkles.com under the ‘Help us’ section in the volunteers and vacancies for further information. When taking the opportunity to spend time in your garden please look out for wildlife, following these tips will be of great help to your local wildlife.

Should you have any questions or concerns, or would like to support our life-saving charity, please see our website www.tiggywinkles.com or give us a call 01844 292 292.

Tips for helping wildlife in your garden: • Putting out food and fresh water • Leaving an area of your garden wild, with piles of wood and leaves • Remember to lift up netting of football goals etc. overnight and when not in use. We get animals that have become trapped in netting, this can cause terrible injuries due to the animal struggling to escape the netting which then becomes a dangerous tourniquet • When using compost off a compost heap, have a gentle and watchful approach, we get hedgehogs and toads impaled by gardening forks • Every year we see some horrififc injuries that have been accidentally inflicted by strimmers. Simply walking in the area to be mowed or strimmed to check for animals hiding in the long grass can prevent these accidents • Keeping rubbish clear • Making sure paint pots etc., have lids on and are stored safely.

Pet Health

Overactive Thyroid gland in cats What Is Hyperthyroidism? The thyroid gland is situated in the front of the neck and produces the essential hormone (thyroxine) that controls how fast the body works when at rest. What Are the Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism? Weight loss (Over 90% of cases) and increased appetite (about 70-80% of cases) are among the most common clinical signs of this condition. Some cats will show excessive thirst, increased urination, and an increase of energy and activity. As the condition progresses the heart is

affected and can lead to signs of heart failure. What Breeds/Ages Are Prone to Hyperthyroidism? Hyperthyroidism can occur in any breed of cat, male or female, but occurs almost exclusively in older animals. Less than 6 percent of cases are younger than 10 years of age. How Is Hyperthyroidism Diagnosed? Because several common diseases of older cats share some of the clinical signs of hyperthyroidism, tests are necessary. In most cases, a simple blood test shows elevated T4 levels in the bloodstream. Unfortunately, between 2 and 10 percent of cats with hyperthyroidism will have normal or fluctuating T4 levels. Other illness can suppress elevated T4 levels, lowering

them into the normal or high-normal range and fooling the vet into thinking that the cat’s thyroid status is normal. Treatment is essential and can be curative. If you suspect your cat has any of these symptoms please book an appointment to see your vet. Dr Mandy Elgin BVMS MRCVS

Tinnitus Management Tinnitus is a common symptom of many hearing and ear conditions. Tinnitus is the term for hearing sounds or noises that occur inside your body or head rather than from an outside source. Tinnitus can often be more distressing than the actual condition. This was certainly the case for Nikki Magrath, who suffered sudden, devastating hearing loss over the course of a weekend. The tinnitus, that was a symptom of the damage to the inner ear, was by far the worst element of the whole episode. Tinnitus is nearly always accompanied by hearing loss, and wearing hearing devices certainly seems to help many people manage the symptoms better. Hearing aids enhance the sounds you want to hear, such as speech and general environmental noises, this in turn lessens the effect of the tinnitus. Tinnitus is very closely linked to emotional stress, it is often reported that when stress levels are high, tinnitus seems to be exacerbated. The difficultly is that often the tinnitus itself is causing the heightened stress levels, making it very difficult to cope with. Counselling can really help when tinnitus is significantly impacting your mental health and happiness. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is fast becoming a popular and effective treatment for certain types of tinnitus. Amersham Tel: 01494 733840 Thame Tel: 01844 396057 hear@astonhearing.co.uk

TAKING HEARING

What causes tinnitus?

Seriously

There are many causes of tinnitus. The most common is damage to the inner ear - the cochlea. If there is damage somewhere in the auditory system the brain can try to fill the space with ‘noise’. Damage to the inner ear can occur from exposure to noise, such as going to a very loud music event or gun fire. Sometimes certain prescription drugs cause tinnitus as a side effect. If your outer ear is blocked with wax, this can sometimes make you very aware of tinnitus, as you are no longer hearing everyday environmental noises. Changes in blood flow such as high blood pressure can cause tinnitus and as a result the tinnitus can sometimes be an ‘early warning sign’ of more serious conditions. Tinnitus is a complex issue and there is no miracle cure for the symptoms. The best approach is to offer a personalised support service. We provide a safe place to talk and share frustrations whilst giving qualified information to help fully understand the condition, and offer practical tactics and solutions that help lessen the negative impact on everyday life. A problem shared and better understood often goes a long way to help. Aston Hearing in Amersham and Thame offer monthly coffee morning drop-in sessions, which are free of charge and open to everyone. The sessions work well as often simply sharing experiences and recognising you are not the only person that has the difficulty can help you cope much better in day to day life.

If you have any concerns about your ears or hearing, please contact us. At Aston Hearing we care for all hearing needs. We also have our informal Hear Today Events and hold free, monthly, coffee mornings for anyone to come and talk to us over tea & cake. Check out our website for more details: www.astonhearing.co.uk

Get Rid of WI-FI Woes Our Wi-Fi internet connections often behave in weird ways. Sometimes we can’t get connected at all, and sometimes we can connect but it’s terribly slow or there’s no internet. Assuming the connection is your own, there are several things you can do. If you’re connected but there’s no internet, theWi-Fi router isn’t connecting to your broadband.Turning it off and back on again usually fixes that. The other problems may be caused by interference or obstacles – for example, you may be in range of many other networks.Your router will have settings to change Wi-Fi channels: experiment with different ones and you’ll often see dramatic results. And watch out for physical blockages, especially metal ones, as they can block signals. If you can’t relocate the router, move it higher up.

Health

Doing resistance work helps women Osteoporosis is a condition that makes bones more brittle and prone to fracture. Although osteoporosis can effect men and younger people, post-menopausal women are most at risk. One of the best ways to help maintain healthy bones is to exercise regularly – which encourages the bones to absorb calcium and other mineral salts that keep bones strong. Weight bearing exercises and weight resistance exercises are best for strengthening bones and muscles and as well as helping to keep bones in good health, may also reduce the likelihood of falls as you age. Weight bearing exercises are those where your body is supporting its own weight, such as walking or housework or carrying groceries. Weight resistance exercise involves pushing or pulling against an additional weight, like a dumbbell or barbell or resistance equipment in a gym.

Gardening

Spring Time Spring is definitely approaching, the nights are getting lighter and the temperature slowly beginning to rise, another gardening season is with us. Your hardy perennials will be starting to pop their heads up above the soil, your shrubs, roses and trees will be forming buds and preparing to put on new, fresh growth. These tough plants will have survived another long winter, and will now need all their energy to give their best in the spring. Like us, to be at their peak, plants need a good balanced diet, full of nutrition and goodness, so with that in mind, this is the ideal time to feed. Fertilisers come in many shapes and sizes, some specific to certain plant types, others just right for any situation. All plants require certain basic nutrients to be at their best, they are Nitrogen, Phosphates and Potassium, and these are found in the most popular fertilisers such as Growmore, which is a manmade product, therefore not suitable for organic gardening - pelleted chicken manure is an ideal choice for the ‘green’ gardener. If your plants need particular help, there are a number of fertilisers ideal for certain tasks. For instance, Bonemeal promotes strong and healthy root growth, Fish, Blood & Bone will increase crop yield while Sulphate of Potash improves fruit and vegetable quality. Acid loving plants such as Camellias and Azaleas cannot be grown successfully in our chalky, Alkaline soil, they must be planted in tubs with Ericaceous compost. You will need to keep an acid balance by applying a liquid Ericaceous feed two or three times a year. You can use all these fertilisers on established plants, but of course don’t forget to add a handful of one of them when planting new plants. Another great help in the feeding depart r ment is organic farmyard manure. A good mulch around the 76

base of shrubs and trees will feed, prevent weeds establishing, protect from hard frosts and retain moisture when the weather improves. Don’t forget to look after your vegetables and fruit bushes too. Applying regular feeds of liquid tomato food will really improve your crops of tomatoes, peppers, chillies and cucumbers, just wait until the first flowers start to show, then feed weekly. Hanging baskets and containers will thank you for adding slow release fertiliser, which is available in pellet form. Just pop a couple in each basket or pot and the pellet will break down over the season, slowly releasing the nutrients into the compost, giving you much more colour and growth throughout the season. We stock all these fertilisers, and indeed many more, so if you require more information, just pop in. Happy Gardening,

Your Local Theatre Competition

Stepinsideloves…! Cilla the Musical, Strangers on a Train and chances to WIN with Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. The Liverpool sound is coming to Aylesbury for one week only this April with Cilla The Musical Tue 10 – Sat 14 Apr. Written by BAFTA award-winning Jeff Pope, local lass Kara Lily Hayworth takes up the coveted role of Cilla, and is joined by Andrew Lancel (Coronation Street) playing Brian Epstein and Carl Au as Bobby. This spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically acclaimed hit ITV television series tells the extraordinary story of the ordinary girl from Liverpool whose teenage dreams of stardom lead her to becoming one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers of all time. The musical score is the ultimate soundtrack to the 60’s including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had a Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, alongside Twist and Shout by the Beatles, California Dreamin by The Mamas and The Papas’ and many more. As thrillers continue to grip theatregoers around the country, Patricia Highsmith’s 1950’s classic spine-tingler is set to be no exception! Strangers On A Train (Mon 19 – Sat 24 Mar) is full of twists and turns in a tale about two men who meet in the dining carriage of a train. Successful businessman Guy Haines questions his wife’s fidelity and reveals wanting to divorce to marry his mistress Anne.

His new travel companion, playboy Charles Bruno, comes up with a fiendishly inventive idea: he’ll kill Guy’s wife if Guy agrees to bump off Charles’s father, whom he loathes. The perfect double crime! Hannah Tointon (playing Guy’s fiancée Anne), has a theory as to why such stories continue to enthral audiences. “It’s that excitement, maybe, that we all crave… as much as we crave things being safe and calm, maybe we also need that spark. Watching it, you’re living vicariously through the play.” Hannah continues: “I think it’s a shame our lives sometimes become grey, where you do the safe thing.” She laughs. “Not that I’m advocating committing crimes, but it’s interesting how the play explores both sides of us as human beings.” See the seat gripping masterpiece for yourself! Book now by calling 0844 871 7607 (calls 7p per min plus phone company’s access charge) or visit atgtickets.com/Aylesbury.

Henley on Thames to Lower Shiplake linear River walk

Anattractivelinearwalkalong theRiverThamesbetweenthe picturesquetownofHenleyand thevillageofLowerShiplake. TheThamesPathoffersgentle walkingforallabilities, with wonderfulviewsoftheriver windingitswaythroughgreen meadows.Onyourreturn youcanrewardyourselfwitha creamteainHenley!

Route: Head out of Henley railway station. You will shortly reach Station Road; turn right and follow the road to the river front. If you have parked at Mill Meadows simply walk across the green to the river front.

Distance: 2½ miles each way (allow 1½ hours). You can get the train back (approximately hourly service). Start: Henley on Thames station (or Shiplake station) If you are coming by car, follow signs to long term parking at the station or at Mill Meadows. Access Information: Level walk throughout. The Thames Path from Henley to Marsh Lock is a wide tarmac path suitable for wheelchairs. From the end of the Marsh Lock footbridge the Thames Path passes through meadows and can get muddy. There is a footbridge with a short slope to it near Bolney Court. Refreshments: There are lots of pubs and tearooms in Henley. There is a pub in Lower Shiplake. 80

When you reach the river front turn right and follow the Thames Path towards Shiplake. You will soon see the River and Rowing Museum on your right, this is well worth a visit, and a good place to stop for refreshments. You will pass through Mill Meadows, then on to a track past ‘The Old House’ on your right and a hundred yards further the footbridge leading to Marsh Lock on your left. Go over the footbridge which will give you spectacular views over the Thames and the rushing weirs. On the Lock Keepers Cottage you can see floodmarks from some of the most severe floods, dating back to 1894.

After Marsh Lock the walk becomes more rural, with wide open views of water meadows on your right and steep wooded hills on your left; you can see the exposed chalk which is so characteristic of the Chilterns. Look out for the ‘Happy Valley’ estate, with its stone bridge (the stones came from Reading Abbey) and The Druids Temple graves which stretch back for 200 metres underground. At the end of the meadow the path swings to the right, away from the river and over a footbridge. Follow the narrow path which goes past Bolney Court and leads to a surfaced lane. Continue along this road (following signs for the ‘Thames Path’), passing many large houses. Towards the end of Bolney Road, you will see the Thames Path signed on your right, just after ‘Rivermead House’. Follow this to Shiplake station. Book Review

Spring Selection

Several years later, one of them breaks the rules and dark forces are unleashed, including a killer teddy bear, zombie crows and a demonic puppet. The five must put aside their differences and come together to appease the box before it’s too late. Aimed at teens and young adults, The Sacrifice Box is a winning blend of coming of age drama and supernatural horror.

This Issue’s collection of recent releases includes modern fairy tales, a psychological thriller and historical fiction at its finest.

White Chrysanthemum –Mary LynnBracht Approximately 200,000 young Korean women and girls were enslaved by the Japanese army in the Second World War. Thousands of these ‘comfort women’ died from the abuse they experienced. White Chrysanthemum tells the fictional story of 15 year old Hana, who is kidnapped after stepping in to rescue her little sister, Emi. Several decades later, we meet Emi in her desperate last attempt to find out what happened to Hana all those years ago. While White Chrysanthemum is, at times, painful to read, it’s impossible to put down and a must-read for lovers of historical fiction.

HappinessFor Humans – P.Z. Reizen Romantic comedy meets sci-fi in this enjoyable novel. Aiden’s creators know that he’s an intelligent piece of software, which can read books in under a millisecond, review films and tell jokes. What they don’t know is that Aiden has developed feelings, or that his favourite person is Jen, who helps develop Aiden’s conversational skills. Aiden decides Jen would be happier in a relationship, so sets her up on a date. But Aiden isn’t the only intelligent AI on the loose, and not all of them have such good intentions. The Toymakers – Robert Dinsdale It’s 1917 and pregnant teenager Cathy Wray seeks sanctuary at a London toy store. She soon discovers that these toys are unlike any she’s ever seen before. There’s a clockwork dog that’s devoted to his master, paper trees that grow from seed, and toy soldiers that wage battles on their own. Cathy learns to call The Emporium home, and the people who own it her family. But then the First World War breaks out, and nothing will ever be quite as magical again. The Toymakers is a must for fans of Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus. The Sacrifice Box – Martin Stewart Five friends make a pact one summer’s day, when they find an old stone box in the woods. 82

The Beginning of the World in the Middle oftheNight – Jen Campbell This collection of modern fairy tales is dark, twisted and beautiful, and range from the macabre to the heart-warming. You’ll read about a mermaid in an aquarium, a boy who suspects his sister has two souls, and a man who uses animal hearts to keep his girlfriend’s love. There are elements of well-known myths and fairy stories, but this collection is more Brothers Grimm than Disney. Captivating. Everything Is Lies – HelenCallaghan Sophia arrives home one day to find her mother dead and her father lying in a pool of blood. The police are convinced it’s a clear case of attempted murder-suicide, and Sophia is the only one who can prove her mother’s innocence. As she delves into her mother’s past, she uncovers tales of a secret cult, and learns more about her family, and herself, than she could ever have imagined. A tense psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Bring the milk almost to the boil in a small pan then stir in the butter until melted. Leave the liquid to cool until it’s just hand hot. Pour the liquid into the well with the beaten egg and mix with a round- bladed knife to make a soft and slightly sticky dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky. Please mention Chiltern View when replying to adverts

3. 3

Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.

4.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, flatten out with the palms of your hands and scatter over the dried fruit and chocolate chips. Fold and knead the dough until the fruit and chocolate chips are incorporated. Divide and shape the dough into 12 even-sized buns and place on a large greased baking sheet.

5. 5

Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until the buns have risen by at least half again and are almost touching each other - this will take about 45-60 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180C fan, Gas Mark 6.

6.

Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until risen and golden brown. Leave on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a cooling rack. Brush with the warmed golden syrup whilst the buns are still warm.

7.

When the buns are cold, spoon the melted chocolate into a small disposable piping bag, snip off the end and pipe a cross on each bun. Leave until set then serve.

TIP

These buns are best eaten on day they’re made, but if you have some left over the next day simply split and toast and serve withbutter or chocolate spread. 85

The Great British Spring Clean The Great British Spring Clean campaign, which is taking place on 2 - 4th March, has a simple aim: to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches. The campaign is organised by Keep Britain Tidy, an independent charity working towards eliminating litter, ending waste by creating sustainable practices, and improving our beaches, parks and streets. Places to be Proud of The goal of the Great British Spring Clean is to inspire 500,000 people to get outdoors, get active and help clear up the rubbish around them, so that they can ‘live and work in places that they can be proud of and prosper in.’ The campaign works with individuals, businesses, organisations and public bodies, and has some big-name supporters including Coca-Cola Great Britain, Lidl, McDonalds, Wrigley, Costa, Iceland, KFC, Greggs, Stagecoach, the RSPCA, the RSPB and the Marine Conservation Society. Get Involved ‘Join our growing army of #LitterHeroes who have had enough of other people’s litter and are willing to do something about it,’ urges the campaign’s statement. ‘Together we can make a difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.’ You can do some litter-picking by yourself or with friends and family, although make sure you stay safe, particularly if you’re litter-picking near roads. If you prefer to join an organised event or group, the campaign page has a handy map of what’s on – and you can also enter your postcode to discover events taking place near you. 86

Visit www.keepbritaintidy. org/get-involved/ support-ourcampaigns/ great-british-springclean. At Killingbeck in Leeds, for instance, the plan is to clean up the local nature reserve, making ‘the green space on their doorstep’ a nicer, safer place for both people and wildlife. There are also plans to do a litter pick-up in the areas covered by Leeds Health Walks. Meanwhile, Belper claims to be planning its biggest litter-pick ever on the 3rd March, with several sites targeted for clean ups. There are lots of events on the map already – just click on a virtual map pin to see a snippet appear, then click the snippet heading to find out exactly where and when the event is taking place. Feeling Adventurous? The more adventurous of you may like to combine litter-picking with sightseeing, exercise or both. Wayne Dixon, whose adventures can be tracked by following @WayneKoda on Twitter, is walking and litter-picking his way around the 7,500 miles of Britain’s coastline accompanied by his dog, Koda. He is raising money for Mind and North Inuit Dogs while also supporting Keep Britain Tidy and their Great British Spring Clean campaign. It’s a cause dear to his heart and Koda’s, as Koda nearly lost a leg when he was injured by a discarded can. You may not have a few years to spare to follow in Wayne’s footsteps, but a shorter coastal excursion could be fun. If you like to be on the water rather than walking beside it, you could join the Plastic Patrol, as featured on The Russell Howard Hour. The group paddleboard the waterways of Britain removing discarded plastic. ‘We’ll supply the litter pickers, refuse sacks and we’ll even dispose of everything you find – just come along, do your bit and have fun.’ Visit www.plasticpatrol.co.uk and click on ‘clean-up events’ to find one near you. Pet Health

Spring Toxicities

Dr. Kathryn Miller MRCVS Spring is finally here! The sun is out, and the flowers are starting to bloom - but some things in the garden can be surprisingly dangerous to your pet. Daffodil bulbs and flowers can cause gastrointestinal upset, dehydration and collapse, so keep a close eye on your dog if he is a known digger. When trimming the hedges and trees, be careful of how you dispose of the clippings - yew, rhododendrum, labernum and laurel can all cause toxicity if eaten. Whilst protecting your plants from pesky critters, be very cautious about the use of pesticides in areas that your pet can access, and ideally avoid entirely the use of slug pellets – curious pets often ingest these, and they can fatal seizures within hours. Some popular indoor plants can also be dangerous, most notably the lily. All parts of the lily are highly toxic to cats - ingesting just a small amount can cause

CROSSROADS

fatal kidney failure. Very prompt action is required, so please call your vet as soon as possible if you see your cat eating lilies, or see suspicious yellow staining on their fur (from the pollen). Some springtime animals can pose hazards to your pets also: toads emit a toxin when threatened, which can damage a curious pet’s tongue, and wasp/ bee stings can cause swellings and allergic reactions in susceptible animals. As always, if you have any concerns about your animal’s health, please call 01494 459095 and our friendly, qualified nurses will be able to give you advice over the phone. Kathryn Miller MRCVS BVSc
