Editors’Letter Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View magazine. Spring is the time for new life, be that of animals, plants, or anything in nature. A lot of us will definitely be more aware of changes all around us as we have been forced to take stock and slow down. Daily walks have become a part of our lives and it is amazing what you notice. Look out for new bulbs emerging from the ground, blossom providing wonderful colours, warmth from the sun and baby animals everywhere. Right now, with more time on our hands than ever before, you would imagine that we’d all be sales dynamos in our businesses, we’d have our homes redecorated, cupboards decluttered and that we’d be outdoing Joe Wicks in our fitness regimes. In reality, apathy has crept over us and we are maybe struggling to find inspiration, or just the inclination, to do much at all. Instead of using the time to transform

our lives, we might be spending hours playing a bubble popping game on our phone, binge watching a Netflix series or becoming a champion custard-cream eater. Or is that just us? Like all of us, we have good (productive) days, and bad (time-wasting) days. Various advice talks about procrastination, suggesting that it’s making the first step that gets at least something achieved every day. Why not start with one little thing that you have been putting off and slowly, other things will follow. A sense of achievement is the best way to build that enthusiasm to do more. We are all getting through these difficult times in our own way, and that’s ok. We don’t need to compare ourselves to others, we just need to do what we can and look forward to better things ahead. They are coming. It’s getting better every day. Soon we will be back to our busy lives and wishing we had time to just sit. Until next time

Watlington and Aston Rowant Nature Reserve Walk This is the next in a series of social-distancing walks across the Chilterns. It takes in some wonderful Chilterns scenery including rolling chalk downland, beech woodlands and ancient pathways. Length: 6.2 miles (Allow 3 hours) Start & finish: Watlington Recreation Ground car park, Shirburn Road, Watlington OX49 5BZ. Grid ref: SU 691 948 Access Information: Moderate walking on unsurfaced paths and lanes with two long steep climbs. There is one stile Food & drink: Pubs and café in Watlington (subject to Covid restrictions). None on the walk. Route 1. Leave the car park and turn left to follow the footpath along the B4009 Watlington Road (you can also cut across the recreation ground to meet the road at the far corner). After 300m you will see Station Road on your right. 2. Cross over the Watlington Road with care to join Station Road (also the route of the Oxfordshire Way). Follow this quiet track enjoying the lovely views of the hills ahead. Continue past the Ridgeway National Trail and 450m later you will see a footpath on your left. 3. Follow this path which skirts fields and woods until you come out on to the open chalk grassland at the foot of Shirburn Hill. Follow the path which climbs steeply uphill offering panoramic views from the top. The path finally emerges on the Christmas Common Road.

4. Turn left and then after 50m take the footpath on the left into Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve. Follow this path through the nature reserve and all the way down to the Ridgeway National Trail (also Swan’s Way and the Icknield Way along this stretch). 5. Turn left on to the Ridgeway and follow it back to Station Road. Turn right along Station Road to retrace your steps back to the car park. Points of Interest A Shirburn Hill is a beautiful area of chalk grassland, chalk heath, scrub and broadleaved woodland. The grassland is dotted with large bumps which are ant hills, many of them are over 100 years old and contain around 5,000 ants in each mound. B Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve contains flower-rich chalk grassland, woodland and juniper scrub. There are huge numbers of butterfly, flower and bird species and fantastic views over the Oxford plain. C The Ridgeway National Trail has been described as Britain’s oldest road and is part of a historic corridor thought to have connected the Dorset coast to the Wash.

Thame Players thought it would add to our theatre’s offering and submitted a grant application to OxLEP Business’ Kickstart Grant Scheme, created to support the county’s businesses affected by Covid-19, to enable the purchase of relevant equipment. These grants are funded by the European Regional Development Fund. We are delighted that our application has been successful, so you could be watching our shows from your sofa before long (as well as seeing them in the theatre, when it can re-open). What this means • It’s easy to watch shows if you have internet access • You can enjoy a show even if you’re unable to be in the theatre due to e.g., disability

Smoked Salmon And Broccoli Quiche This quiche is perfect for a light lunch served with salad or a substantial family dinner served with boiled new potatoes and coleslaw. Serves 4 Ready in 1 hr 15 mins, plus chilling and cooling Ingredients 225g ready-made shortcrust pastry Flour, for dusting 150g small broccoli florets 3 large eggs 100ml milk 75g Cheddar, finely grated Salt and freshly ground black pepper 150g smoked salmon, chopped Method 1. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Trim the edges and prick the pastry base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 mins. 2. Preheat the oven to 200C / 180C fan / gas mark 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. 24

Line the pastry case with greaseproof paper and baking beans. Bake on the hot baking sheet in the preheated oven for 10 mins. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-10 mins until the pastry is pale golden. Cool for 10 mins. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C / 160C fan / gas mark 4. 3. Meanwhile, cook the broccoli in a pan of boiling water for 2-3 mins. Drain and refresh under cold running water. Set aside. 4. Whisk the eggs, milk and half the cheese together in a jug and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5. Arrange the broccoli and salmon in the pastry case. Gently pour over the egg mixture and scatter over the rest of the cheese. Bake for 30-35 mins until golden and set. Serve warm or cold.

Tip Instead of smoked salmon use a can of drained and flaked pink or red salmon.

Mediation, a gentler approach to divorce After a year of COVID-19 and a life of lockdown and restrictions, for many couples the months spent in isolation have caused permanent damage to their relationships. But what actually happens when a family splits up? Lightfoots Solicitors are here to guide you through the process and offer practical advice about how mediation can help. Is it really over? The first and most important step is to decide if the relationship really is over. These are unprecedented times; being at home so much means that our stress has nowhere to go and can cause conflict. Talk to your partner and see whether they are feeling the same way. Is this just a pandemic problem or has the relationship really run its course? Counselling (both personal and relationship) can be a huge help. If you have children, then once the decision has been made to separate they need to be told. Think in advance about what to say to them, how and when. The breakup of a family is a confusing 32

and upsetting time for children whatever their age. How the separation is handled will have a lasting effect on their wellbeing. What is mediation? We we strongly believe that mediation is the best route to sort out separation particularly when children are involved. It gives couples a chance to end their marriage as amicably as possible while focusing on the needs of the children. You will work together with a trained mediator to identify and address the issues that you need to work out between you. The mediator is impartial and will not make any judgments or express opinions but will listen and help you to agree on the arrangements. They might be a solicitor but when they are carrying out their role as a mediator, they can’t give legal advice, only information. In this instance it’s important for both parties to each get some independent legal advice; you will need different solicitors. Your solicitor will give you advice and work with your former partner’s solicitor to try and reach an agreed settlement of the issues. Court is usually a last resort unless there is an urgent situation that cannot be resolved without court proceedings. Whichever route you take it’s a good idea for both of you to get an understanding of the family finances. We recommend that once a financial agreement is reached it is recorded in a court order to make it legally binding. Practical steps to guide you through the process. 1. Talk to your partner and decide if the relationship really is over, counselling can help. 2. Tell your children in a sensitive and reassuring way. 3. Many couples choose to separate straight away. 4. Use a solicitor to put your financial agreements into a legally binding court order. How long will it take? There are financial and time benefits to mediation. It normally takes between three to six sessions with the cost (which is almost certainly far less than court proceedings) shared between you. Mediation can take just a few months once you start the process, whereas going to Court is more likely to be measured in years and can cost upwards of £20,000. Sticky toffee pudding Hello, and I hope you are enjoying the recipes from this page each month. I have a fabulous recipe for you below which everyone can enjoy. Serve after Sunday lunch or for pudding over Easter for an indulgent treat…. This recipe is vegan, vegetarian, gluten free (if you use gluten free flour), egg free and dairy free. It is also nut free but don’t forget to check the packaging of the dates in case they contain traces of nuts. Ingredients Sponge 200g/8oz dates, chopped 1 rounded tsp bicarbonate of soda 50g/2oz dairy free soya margarine Pinch of salt 75g/2½oz Demerara sugar 75g/2½oz molasses sugar 175g/6oz self-raising flour One teaspoon vanilla extract For the sticky toffee topping 250ml/9floz dairy free cream 80g/3oz dairy free margarine 80g/3oz molasses sugar For the extra sauce 300ml/12floz dairy free cream 50g/2oz dairy free margarine 50g/2oz molasses sugar 150g/6oz dairy free vanilla custard* (buy or make – remember to check ingredients if buying*) 40

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Pour 275ml/10floz boiling water into a large mixing bowl and add the dates. Set aside until cool. 3. Add all the other ingredients to the dates and mix well. 4. Blend in a food processor until it makes a nearly smooth batter, but with a few specks of date still visible. Generously grease a baking dish & pour in the batter. Bake for 40 minutes at 170C. 5. Preheat the grill. 6. Meanwhile, make the sticky toffee topping by heating the ingredients gently in separate pans, whisking regularly, until it comes to the boil. 7. Pour the topping over the cooked pudding and place the sticky toffee under grill until bubbling. 8. Exercising outside after those cold winter months When the weather warms up, we look forward to going outside but just be aware of unforeseen injuries. The warm and sunny weather that comes with Spring is a relief after months of cold and snow. And whilst using the warm weather as motivation to move and get healthy is great, doing too much too soon can lead to injuries. Beware of common overuse injuries If you have been less active throughout the winter, your body needs a little time to read just itself to intense activity. It’s really important to start slowly as most injuries come from trying to do too much too soon. Make sure you warm up You should take it easy at the beginning and warm up

before your workout. Don’t go from zero or light levels of exercise to a high level of intense workout without first allowing your body to warm up. How to treat an injury at home “If you feel any pain more than mild soreness, that’s a sign you have an injury that you shouldn’t ignore,” says David. The good news? Most of these injuries aren’t serious and don’t cause permanent damage. If you think you have an injury, follow the RICE method: • R – Rest the injury for 48 hours • I – Apply ice for 20 minutes at a time, 4 to 8 times a day • C – Compress the injury to reduce swelling • E – Elevate the injured limb about 8 inches above your heart.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue My name is Sid; I am a Terrier Mix and about 5 years old. I am an energetic little Terrier and love to be on the go, out and about exploring. I am looking for an active home with people that have experience with hardy Terriers and will continue my training, keep me well exercised and mentally stimulated. I have previously had some training and I know the commands; sit and paw. I also walk nicely on the lead. I am a highly intelligent dog who would enjoy being taught new commands and tricks by my new owner. I am motivated by treats and will take them gently from you when offered. Other activities that I would also enjoy include, canicross or bikejoring which will help to keep me physically fit and help burn off any extra energy. Introducing Thame Outer Circuit If the start of 2021 has left you feeling trapped at home, then we are delighted to let you know about a fabulous new opportunity on your doorstep – Thame Outer Circuit, an approximately 20 mile circular walk through the Oxfordshire countryside surrounding the market town of Thame. The walk has been divided into three separate sections, with the start and finish of each accessible by bus from the centre of the town, or from surrounding villages. There are also 5 walkable linking routes from the town centre which facilitate walkers to explore shorter segments of the Outer Circuit. The Thame Outer Circuit takes in the villages of Long Crendon, Shabbington, Tetsworth, Sydenham, Emmington, Towersey, Kingsey and Haddenham Church End as well as passing through the Rycote Estate and the Oxfordshire Golf Course.

periods of heavy rain, some fields, particularly those adjacent to the River Thame, may be flooded. The walk has been created to encourage walking in the countryside as an integral part of Thame’s Green Living Plan, adopted by Thame Town Council, to promote a cleaner, greener, healthier Thame. A huge amount of work has gone into developing the walk with Tony Clark, the inspiration behind Thame Outer Circuit, Ruth Cornish & Len Davidson developing and testing the route with the support of Thame & Wheatley Ramblers. The result is both a printed leaflet (that will be available soon) and an online version of the route available from https://www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/ visit-thame/town-trails/ for you to use on your phone. Walkers are asked to respect the Country Code: to leave things as they find them, to take litter home, to keep dogs on leads near livestock and to clean up after their dogs.

The terrain is generally flat, and the walk is mainly on public rights of way with a few linking sections on reasonably quiet roads. However, it should be noted that this area is fairly low-lying and that, after 54
