Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View magazine, the issue that we hope is a true herald of Spring!! As you will all by now be aware, we are passionate at Chiltern View HQ about all things local; businesses, communities and our amazing wildlife. So, imagine our excitement when we discovered that the rather engaging little chap on our front cover is indeed a resident of the Chilterns. He is a Common Cockchafer, also known as the May Bug, the Spang Beetle or the Billy Witch and he and his friends can be
seen in early May. We have referred to ‘him’ as the males have 7 leaves on their remarkable antler-like antennae, while females only have 6! He is only about 25-30mm long! We do hope you enjoy another magazine packed with local information and adverts, plus our amazing competitions; Aylesbury Theatre (P.34), Wycombe Swan (P.76), Thame Players (P.12) and Beacon Festival (P.50). Hoping that, by the time you read this, we will all be enjoying sunshine and warmth once again. Until next time

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello! My name is Bruno; I’m a large male of mixed breed and about 4 years old.
I’m a big strong boy, but I can be incredibly sensitive with it. I’m a wonderful boy and will have a lot of love and affection to give to the right owner. I’ve had two operations on my right leg while I’ve been with Stokenchurch Dog Rescue, after I ruptured my cruciate ligament whilst playing with a puppy. This has healed well, and now I happily enjoy my off- lead time in their enclosed areas – more so than going for walks. I’m good with other dogs and possibly cats but I will need a home with adults only. I enjoy having my brain mentally stimulated through activity toys and interacting with my handler. I will do most things for food and this is a great way of building a bond with me. I react well to most dogs, although I can bark through frustration if I’m not allowed to say hello. It is recommended that new owners attend training classes with me, not only so that I can learn
more commands, but also for my confidence and social skills. Sadly, I haven’t had the best start in life, but I have grown and developed into such a wonderful dog in the time I have been in care and they would love for me to find my new forever home. New owners will need to discuss their home set up with the team, as it’s important that I have my own space where I can feel safe when visitors enter the home. If you have experience with large breed dogs and have space in your heart and home, then I could be the dog for you. Can you offer me a loving and permanent new home? www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695

Thame Players Proudly Present: New Foxtrot Serenaders
Saturday 19th May 2018 at 7.45pm The New Foxtrot Serenaders return for their annual visit to The Players Theatre. This great little band always provide a thoroughly entertaining and foot-tapping show, not to be missed by lovers of music from the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Baroque Theatre presents Twist
Saturday 26th May at 7.45pm Twist is a play about David Woods, a mild-mannered accountant who sees a sensational way of making a fortune by writing a kiss-and-tell biography about his bitchy wife Sarah, the nation’s favourite actress from the hit soap Doctors and Nurses. He then realises that his book will do even better if she is murdered first! Unfortunately, a few obstacles get in his way...
Comedy @ The Players presents: Phil Wang: Kinabalu
Friday 8th June 2018 at 7.45pm After a sell-out Edinburgh run and at the end of his UK / Australian tour Phil Wang is coming to Thame with his acclaimed solo show: Kinabalu. As a Malaysian-born son of Chinese and British parents, Phil Wang has a unique and nuanced view of ethnicity and identity. In Kinabalu, he explores his ‘immigrant patriotism’ with silliness and sophistication in equal parts. As seen on: Live at The Apollo, Have I Got News For You, Would I Lie To You?, and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Room 101.
Giles Shenton presents My Dog’s Got No Nose
Friday 1st June at 7.45pm Giles Shenton returns with a thought provoking and cleverly constructed piece of theatre about a man preparing to fulfil his lifelong ambition to be a stand-up comedian, “…puts one in mind of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads” Tickets for all shows at The Players Theatre, Nelson St, Thame OX9 2DP available from online from www.thameplayers.co.uk or Spear Travels, Greyhound Walk, Thame 01844 217228

Health
Are you lifting correctly? It’s one of the most natural things for a parent to do, but new research shows that more than 80,000 Britons a year sustain injuries to their backs, knees and other joints by incorrectly lifting or carrying youngsters. The most common problems, resulting in back and knee strain, were caused by lifting children from the floor, lifting babies from cots and balancing them on hips. A fifth suffered injury helping a child out of a car seat, lifting them out of a high chair or carrying a toddler on their shoulders. When picking up a child from the floor, a high chair or buggy, adults are best advised to bend at the knees rather than from the waist, and children should be carried across the chest rather than balanced on the hip to avoid strain.
26
Grandparents are particularly at risk if they have been diagnosed with the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis. Top tips for avoiding back pain when you look after young children: • Only lift a child if you have to. • Do switch sides if you need to carry them on the hip. • Stand evenly on both legs avoiding weight bearing on one hip and leg. • Avoid carrying a bucket car seat for too long, and with the same arm. This will cause uneven strain on your back.

Pet Health
Ageing can be a pain! Dr. Kathryn Miller BVSc CertAVP PgCertVPS MRCVS Osteoarthritis (arthritis) is a very common condition, affecting over 80% of older cats and dogs. It causes painful, irreversible destruction of the cartilage within the joints. This ultimately leads to reduced use of the joint, wastage of the surrounding muscle, lameness and chronic pain. Despite this, less than 60% of animals with arthritis will ever be treated! Many owners are unaware of their animal’s suffering. Animals in chronic pain will still eat and still walk and almost never yelp; but they may be slower, stiffer to get up, more reluctant to jump, and lick their sore joints. Cats often stop grooming (thus dandruff is one of the first signs of arthritis). Other owners notice their animal getting stiff, but assume it is an unavoidable part of ageing. In clinics, owners often report “He has started slowing down and limping on his walk, but he’s not in pain”. This misconception comes from the fact that animals in chronic pain rarely yelp when you touch/manipulate
CROSSROADS Celebrating
their leg (like they would with acute pain such as a cut or fracture). They just process chronic pain differently. The good news is lots that can be done to help arthritis. In the early stages (often noticed in the clinic when the vet feels the destruction in the joint, or notices abnormal muscle wastage) cartilage protection can slow down the destruction. Adjustments in exercise, diet and even physio/ hydrotherapy can also be extremely helpful. In the later stages, pain relief is also absolutely vital. This can take the form of daily tablets, or long acting injections. Speak to your vet if you are concerned you pet may be suffering with arthritis, and see what options may be available to help them. Gardening
Grow your own vegetables These days, with all of us being more aware of where our food actually comes from, concerns about plastic packaging and a desire to cut down on ‘food miles’, growing your own vegetables makes more and more sense. You will be able to eat the freshest of produce knowing full well that your vegetables have been grown organically. Everyone agrees that home grown vegetables taste far better than anything you can buy in a supermarket, and you will also reap the benefit of being out in the fresh air getting some exercise. It’s a win win situation. If you’re setting about growing your own for the first time, a bit of preparation now will pay dividends later in the season. One thing to bear in mind is to not be too ambitious. If you’re taking on an allotment or are planning to dig a plot in your own garden, don’t go mad and take on a huge area. A small plot, something like 3 metre square, is a good size area at begin with. If you tackle a bigger space, you will soon find the management of the plot begins to be a problem. Weeds, watering and general maintenance takes time, that’s fine if you plan to spend pretty much every day tending your vegetables, but most of us have other things like work and a family to look after! To the other extreme, if space is an issue -as in not having any, you can easily grow vegetables successfully in containers. Once you have decided on where you plan to grow - ideally an open sunny spot with a water source nearby - dig the plot over, getting
38
rid of any large stones and weeds. Then get as much good nutritious matter into your area - well rotted organic farmyard manure is ideal, but do be aware, if you are importing manure from an outside source you may well be bringing in unwanted weeds into your garden. To be safe, go for pre-bagged manure that has been screened and cleansed. It sounds obvious, but grow what you like to eat. It’s tempting to buy loads of seeds, lots of different vegetables - but how many turnips or celeriac will you really want? The more tender vegetables such as peppers and chillies will really need some protection to thrive, a greenhouse ideally. Tomatoes and cucumbers too prefer a sheltered environment, although there are outdoor varieties that should crop well during the varied weather of a British summer. All of us at Askett Nurseries enjoy growing vegetables, so if you have any questions, do pop in. Happy Gardening,
Simon, Alison and all at Askett Nurseries To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Hearing For Life For the last fourteen years the UK has run a very successful, highly respected Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening programme. The newborn hearing screening is a very quick objective test that is conducted on every newborn baby within weeks of their birth. The test helps to identify babies who have permanent hearing loss as early as possible. This means parents can get the support and advice they need right from the start. The initial screening test is a very quick way to identify a potential problem, and the baby is then referred on to audiology for a more in-depth assessment, which will often conclude that there is no problem. For every 1000 babies born however, one to two babies are found to have been born with permanent hearing loss in one or both ears. This increases to 1 in every 100 babies who have spent more than 48 hours in intensive care. This incredibly valuable programme introduces families to the importance of hearing literally within the very few weeks of birth but assuming all is well then what happens? When is the next stage that we consider our personal hearing health? The truth is pretty shocking – it is likely that the neonatal screening is the only formal hearing assessment the majority of people will have until perhaps they are screened through work or when they notice a problem. It is recommended that we keep an eye on our child's hearing as they develop, but regular hearing checks are not the norm at any stage in life – which is odd when you start to consider how vitally important our hearing is at all stages of life.
We are all encouraged to regularly have our eyes tested and a visit to the dentist a couple of times a year is accepted as the norm. There is no question that this a good idea and an essential part of managing our general health and wellbeing but our hearing is not given the same level of attention. Having a hearing test is often seen as being unnecessary. It is only when something is wrong that people think about getting support and advice. We encourage everyone to take their hearing seriously, whether you are of school age or in retirement. If you are unable to hear well your everyday life and social well-being become affected and you can find yourself very vulnerable in many situations. You may also find you can no longer enjoy listening to music and just general conversations become extremely challenging without the support of technology. Throughout 2018 we will also be giving you tips and advice to ensure you are keeping you ears safe so that you may enjoy better hearing. Protecting your ears from loud noises, for example, and how to care for your ears to keep them clean and safe from infections. We take hearing seriously - will you?

Book Review
Curl Up with a book
and sister drift away, Jules finds solace in a classmate, Alva. Spanning 40 years of loneliness, disconnection and disjointed memories, this novel touches on many themes, from dementia to grief, via hope, love and friendship. Quietly brilliant, The End of Loneliness was awarded the European Prize for Literature in 2016 and has recently been translated from German to English.
Make the most of the longer evenings by curling up with one of this month’s top reads.
The Witchfinder’s Sister – Beth Underdown Alice Hopkins finds herself caught up in her brother Matthew’s war against witches in 17th century England. How far will she go to draw suspicion away from herself and those she loves? When a birthmark can be seen as evidence of witchcraft, no one is safe. Tense, atmospheric and chilling in its reimagining of historical events, The Witchfinder’s Sister makes for a gripping read.
Only Child – Rhiannon Navin Seven year old Zach Taylor’s world changes forever when his brother is killed in a mass shooting. As his parents struggle to cope with their grief, Zach finds his own ways of dealing with his loss. A beautiful story that is as much about forgiveness and family as it is about loss. We can’t guarantee you won’t cry, but you certainly won’t forget Only Child in a hurry. The Sealwoman’s Gift – Sally Magnusson Historical fiction at its finest, The Sealwoman’s Gift is based on the true story of Ásta and her family, who were kidnapped by pirates in Iceland in 1627. Along with hundreds of other Europeans, Ásta was shipped across the globe and sold into slavery in Algiers. In this fictionalised account, Magnusson imagines how Ásta, a pastor’s wife, would have coped in a culture that was completely alien to her. In the end, Ásta has to choose between her freedom and the only child who hasn’t yet been ripped away from her. Save this book for a long train journey, because you won’t want to put it down. The End of Loneliness – Benedict Wells Jules is sent to boarding school with his siblings following the death of his parents. As his brother

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – Stuart Turton Groundhog Day meets Agatha Christie meets Quantum Leap in this tightly plotted debut novel. A man wakes up in the forest with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He soon finds out that he needs to solve a murder, and will keep reliving the day over and over again until he does so. Very clever, highly original and a real page turner to boot, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle deserves to rocket up the bestseller charts. The Radleys – Matt Haig Rowan Radley has no idea why he feels so lethargic all the time, is sensitive to light and suffers from insomnia. Until, that is, his sister kills a would-be attacker and Rowan’s parents reveal that the whole family are vampires. A witty, easy read from the bestselling author of The Humans and How To Stop Time, The Radleys is less gothic horror and more a gentle poke at middle-class life and the pressure put on people to conform. Not a recent release this one, but worth a mention nonetheless.

Turn End Trust Turn End Trust launches new Website and Events Programme for 2018 Turn End is a RIBA award winning group of three houses and a garden in the heart of Haddenham, designed by architect Peter Aldington. It is widely regarded as a fine example of post-war housing design. In November 2017 Historic England listed Turn End’s garden at Grade II and added it to the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. At that time Turn End was the only post-war listed house and garden created by the same hand. Turn End Trust runs an events programme which includes education, creative and community led events appealing to architecture lovers, garden design lovers and those who care about good design in the area. It operates a Friends Scheme offering private access to the garden, participation in exclusive Friends events and free or discounted entry to other events and welcomes Volunteers to help run the programme and prepare the garden. Highlights of this year’s programme include a second public screening of the film Turn End in Haddenham Youth and Community Hall, guided walks, house and garden open days with a Sculpture Exhibition and Open Studios, an annual lecture, this year on Rescuing Ruins by Alastair Dick-Cleland of the Landmark Trust and an architectural tour, this year in partnership with 58

A Change for Hospice’s Midnight Walk
72
However, many pointed out that men wish to support the Hospice as well. “Men also lose loved ones to cancer or suffer from cancer just the same as ladies,” one lady wrote.
This year, Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity’s annual Midnight Walk will be open to everyone aged 11+ on 23rd June.
The Charity also asked if people would like to change the distances to a 5 mile route and a 10 mile route. “54% of respondents said they would prefer a choice of five or ten miles, and so we have decided to trial this,”says Jo.
“We asked the public whether they would like the event to be open to men and boys as well as women and girls,”explains Jo Turner, Head of Fundraising at the Charity. “80% of respondents said they would like men to take part.”
The Midnight Walk will take place on 23 June 2018, starting and finishing at Aylesbury College as usual. The Midnight Walk is FNHC’s largest fundraising event and last year raised over £55,000 for the Hospice.
While the majority were in favour of the change, some fear that it will affect its unique atmosphere. “It’s nice to celebrate with girlfriends in a relaxed atmosphere. I feel that may change and become more competitive,”said one respondent.
Entry is £20. Walkers receive a free souvenir Midnight Walk 2018 T-shirt, a medal and breakfast at the finish. To sign up, please visit www.fnhospice.org.uk/ midnightwalk To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

CHILTERN VIEW MAGAZINE
What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

Billy is an award-winning 16-year-old Anglo-Brazilian classical / flamenco / fingerstyle guitarist, inspired by the likes of Rodrigo y Gabriela, Tommy Emmanuel, Mike Oldfield and Paco De Lucia. Please mention Chiltern View when replying to adverts
Billy stunned audiences with some extraordinary performances - for judges and mentors including Jazz legend George Benson, Classical Virtuoso Miloš Karadaglić, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, and David Bowie’s long-time producer Tony Visconti who described him as ‘a little boy genius’. Walking Festival
Spring Event Programme live for Chilterns Walking Festival The programme for May’s Chilterns Walking Festival spring event has been announced by the Chilterns Conservation Board, organiser of the popular festival. Running from Saturday 19 May to Sunday 03 June 2018, the programme includes over 80 guided walks, events and activities covering the whole of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which stretches from Oxfordshire through Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire into Hertfordshire. The new programme includes specialist themed walks, and opportunities to discover lively stories and scenic landscapes associated with the Chilterns. Some walks include the prospect of sampling local food and drink, others provide ‘have-a-go’ sessions or chances to learn about the area’s wildlife, history and colourful characters. The Spring programme opening weekend highlights include:
• Food, Farming and the Future – a walk around an organic family farm high up in the Chilterns near Prestwood, where there are different land uses, spectacular views and farmhouse tea & cake.
Each walk is guided by an experienced leader who knows the area well and is keen to share stories of the people and places that have shaped the countryside.
• Checking on Chequers – travel through ancient woodlands from Coombe Hill Monument, following the Ridgeway to enter the Chequers Estate, the country home of British prime ministers.
Chilterns Conservation Board People and Society Officer Annette Venters said “The Chilterns is a rich source of inspiring stories about amazing people and places. Every year we uncover more which we are delighted to share through the Walking Festival programme. We want people new to the Chilterns, or new to walking, to feel comfortable that they will have a wonderful day out, meet new people and explore new areas without having to plan everything themselves”.
• Wild Bee Walk – join enthusiasts Joshua Wells and Stephen Howard at Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve amid the small but beautiful flowers of chalk grassland which supports solitary bees and bumblebees. • Walk the Chalk – on World Nordic Walking Day follow in the footsteps of ancient travellers along the Icknield Way to explore the flowers and late spring delights in Oxfordshire’s chalk hills. • Cemetery Circular: Stepping Stones - Step into a peaceful haven in Berkhamsted, where dramatic storytelling and interpretation will bring some of the town’s past personalities to life.
80
Details of all guided walks, events and activities available in the spring programme can be found on the website www.visitchilterns.co.uk/ walkingfest. Most are free of charge; some require a small fee which is clearly shown. To assist walk leaders with expected numbers, all walk places must be pre-booked via the website. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Recipe
Ricotta Stuffed Pork This is a great way to jazz up pork steaks for a midweek meal. Serve with brown rice or creamy mashed potatoes on the side. Serves 4 Ready in 1 Hour
Ingredients: • 4 thin-cut pork loin steaks • 175g ricotta cheese • 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil • 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 450ml meat or vegetable stock • 4 tbsp dry sherry or apple juice • 175g green beans, trimmed • 2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted
1.
Heat the oil and butter in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the pork rolls for 4-5 minutes, turning once until browned all over. Pour in the stock and sherry or apple juice and simmer for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Remove the pork rolls and keep warm. Add the green beans to the frying pan and cook for 5-6 minutes until just tender.
2.
Slice each pork roll and serve on the green beans with the pan juices and toasted pine nuts.
Place the pork steaks between two sheets of cling film or greaseproof paper and bash with a rolling pin until very thin. In a small bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the chopped basil and lemon zest and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
3.
Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture at the base of each piece of pork then carefully roll up to enclose the stuffing and secure each with a wooden cocktail stick.

5.
TIP If you don’t have fresh basil use 1 tsp dried mixed herbs and for extra flavour add a crushed garlic clove.
