Editors

Letter

Welcome to the November/December issue of Chiltern View Magazine. Our Editors letter is sometimes challenging, but never more so than this November/December issue. As we write this it is still warm and sunny outside but Christmas products and events are appearing all around us. Of course, before that we have November, with Autumn colours and crisp mornings. We also have Bonfire Night so please don’t forget to look after your pets and remember those animals who are desperate for a loving new home; Bluecross (P46) and Stokenchurch Dog Rescue (P6). For Remembrance Day we have an interesting article about the origin of the Poppy (P14) and we do

hope that you will all support the many services across the country. Waddesdon Manor can help us get into the Festive mood from the 10th November with their Christmas Carnival and Market (P50) plus we also have a whole array of events leading up to Christmas such as Advent Fairs, Pantomimes, a Santa Dash and lots of competitions. The theme this year seems to be based very strongly on lights; Risborough lights switch on (P12), Thame lights switch on (P36) and Tree of light (P30). Book your Christmas party early and enjoy some great food at one of the many restaurants in the magazine. For the perfect gift or card head down to West Wycombe Village store (P34) where there really is ‘something for everyone’, tucked away in a beautiful building. We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2019. Until next year

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello! My name is Krooga; I’m a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and about 9 years old. My carers tell me that I’m a wonderful boy. Unfortunately for me I’m looking for a new home through no fault of my own. I love playing with my toys and I enjoy playing interactive games involving my toys with my handler. I enjoy playing tug, but I need to learn to exchange my toy – but I can do this if you offer me another toy or a tasty little treat. I enjoy playing and chasing after a tennis ball and would benefit from having a fully enclosed garden that I can play in. I would not be comfortable sharing my home with another dog however I have all the love in the world to give to my humans! I am an incredibly affectionate boy who just loves human interaction and being with my 6

carers. I would love nothing more than snuggling up on the sofa with my new owners. I want nothing more than to please my handler, so any further training with me will be easy, especially once I have connected and bonded with my new owner. I would make a wonderful companion in a home with people who have owned dogs previously, have no other pets in the home and have lots of time to spend loving me. Can you offer me a loving and permanent new home? www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695 To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

The History of the Remembrance Day Poppy With celebrations to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, the humble but striking poppy will once again be evident as a symbol of hope and remembrance. But what is its history? Over the four years that the Great War raged, the fields of Flanders in Belgium that saw much of the bloody trench warfare were decimated. But like some miracle of life triumphing over death, out of this devastation grew hundreds of field poppies. Part of the papaver family (papaver rhoeas), the Flanders Poppy, as it came to be known, thrived in the barrenness – its bright red colour echoing the bloodshed and a perfect symbol of hope for the future. Canadian WW1 soldier and poet John McCrae wrote the now famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ about their significance in 1915. After reading a copy of McCrae’s poem, American University Professor Moina Michael was so moved that she promptly went out to Wannamaker’s – a department store in New York – and bought all the artificial poppies they had. She then sold them as souvenirs of remembrance under the banner ‘keep the faith’. Due to Moina’s efforts, the National American Legion adopted the poppy as their symbol, agreeing to wear it on Armistice Day, 11th November. While attending an American Legion Convention in 1920, Anna Guérin, a member of the French YWCA, saw the poppy not only as a global symbol of remembrance but also as a way of raising funds. She decided to start mass producing artificial poppies to sell as badges in France. The proceeds

14

would be used to help war widows and orphans. After they proved a success in France, Anna took them abroad. In England, she met Field Marshall Douglas Haig, also the first president of the (Royal) British Legion founded in 1921 and the first British Legion Poppy Day Appeal took place in 1921 with nine million poppies sold and over £100,000 raised. The other allied countries soon followed suit. In 1922, Major John Howson opened the first UK poppy factory in London. Howson had received the Military Cross during the First World War and had subsequently set up The Disabled Society to help provide employment for disabled veterans. His initial staff were five disabled exsoldiers. Today there are two poppy manufacturers in the UK – The Poppy Factory in Richmond (the original poppy factory relocated) and The Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh. The Scottish poppy is slightly different to the English in that it has four petals instead of three and no leaf. Both are staffed by exservicemen and women and produce millions of poppies annually. The Poppy Factory also does free tours which are open to all. Along with the crosses and wreaths that will be placed on war memorials across the country on Remembrance Sunday this centenary year, armies of volunteers will sell millions of poppies in the run up to 11th November. The idea behind them remains the same – a non-religious, non-cultural symbol of remembrance that helps to raise money for veterans and their families.

DON’T HANG UP JUST YET! Now is the time of year when we’re all more than ready to hang up our business hats and turn thoughts to hanging up a Christmas stocking instead. After all, we’re heading towards the end of another hard-worked twelve months and we all deserve a bit of a break. I, for one, wouldn’t argue with that. What I would say though and I hope you’ll excuse me mixing metaphors, is that whilst we all love a rousing chorus of Jingle Bells, we can’t afford to be ostriches, burying our heads and pretending we don’t know the new year’s fast heading in our direction. In fact, there’s never a better time than these weeks at the end of the old year and on the cusp of the new, to look back at what we’ve done right, business-wise, review what we haven’t done so well and make some decisions on working smarter not harder in the coming months. Most of us in business are doing what we’re doing because we’re good at it and there’s no doubt, when you’re good at something, it’s far more profitable doing that than struggling to do something in an area where you don’t excel. For example: if you’ve spent a great many years training and qualifying as an osteopath, odds are you’re not hugely interested in running a PR operation. If you run a prompt and efficient plumbing service you may not shine when it comes to the creative design and the tech knowledge needed to put together a successful website. If you’re knee-deep in flour, producing cakes to rival Mary Berry’s, then it’s possible the thought of sitting down to do your figures has your knees knocking – after all, if that was where your talents lay you’d probably have gone down a different career path altogether. The good news is though, with communication as it is today, small to medium sized companies have never had more access to professional support and expertise. In my line of work I’m privileged to be asked for my advice a lot of the time but, if it’s not giving away a trade secret, I have to confess the pearl of wisdom I hand to most people is the same pearl, time after time - do what you’re good at and like doing and outsource the things you’re not good at and hate doing. There are experts out there who can do everything - from your PR to creating an all-singing, all-dancing website. There are even those who can take that messy shoe-box-full of invoices and receipts you have secreted under your desk and convert the mess into a perfect set of figures, without batting an eyelid! In the coming Christmas break, why not spend some pleasurable time thinking how much quicker you could grow your business if you were sensibly outsourcing to experts who could deal more quickly, efficiently and economically with tasks that have been taking hours of your time just because you’re not very good at them. You can choose to call it a New Year Resolution; I’d just call it Common Sense. Have a great Xmas and a happy, healthy, stress-free and profitable new year.

Risborough Area Community Bus provides daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services for all members of the community in and around Princes Risborough and outlying villages. Nearly 2000 passenger use our bus each month. We make the bus available by non-profit making groups when not on scheduled services and we also run outings each month to places of interest. Our 30 trained, volunteer drivers and our Coordinator work tirelessly to fund and run the service. Drop off for passengers is in the High Street where passengers can connect to buses running to Aylesbury, Thame and High Wycombe. Our passengers love our service. Said one recently “Thank you for the help you give me, without it I would not get out as I do.” And a group which hired the bus last year said “Many thanks for arranging our outing to College Lake Nature Reserve last Wednesday which happened to be the hottest day of the year so far! We all enjoyed the visit despite the heat and your lady driver was excellent. We look forward to using the Community Bus again.” Anyone can use our bus, young and old alike. The fare for most journeys is only £1.50 and most concessionary cards are accepted. Children aged 16 and under travel free.

Breaking News From 1st October, RACB will be making minor changes to our Longwick route and to our Trees & Fields route in order to provide an improved service to passengers. Longwick Route: On the outbound route to Longwick, instead of turning left just before the rail bridge onto Chestnut Way, we will continue straight on up Lower Icknield Way to the roundabout, then turn left and continue into Longwick. The way back from Longwick will be the same as now. This change will benefit those living In Lower Icknield Way.

Trees & Fields Route: Instead of turning left up the New Road slip road, we will continue up Ash Road and then turn left onto Chestnut Road and then Oak Road, thereby benefitting those living on the “Trees side of the New Road estates. The route will then continue as normal but, instead of driving all the way down Berryfield Road, we will turn right into Highfield Road and then continue into the Retreat. This change will benefit folk living in Highfield Road, Eaves Court and the Retreat. We will be leafletting houses along the new parts of the two routes and notices will go on the bus and on our website. Timetables that will also be available on the bus and in the Library. We hope that you will find these changes useful and we look forward to seeing you on board our “Little Green Bus.

Recipe

Potted Smoked Salmon This is the perfect starter for the lunch on the big day – you can make it the night before and the recipe will easily double up if you are feeding a crowd at Christmas! Serves 6 Ready in 30 minutes, plus chilling time

Ingredients: • 275g honey roast salmon flakes • 250g smoked salmon slices, chopped • 100g unsalted butter, softened • 125g full-fat soft cheese • 2 tsp creamed horseradish • 1 tbsp lemon juice • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Fresh dill sprigs and green peppercorns, to garnish • Slices of toasted brown or granary bread, to serve

1.

Reserve about 25g of the salmon flakes for garnish (cover and chill in the fridge until required).

2.

required. Garnish with the rest of the salmon flakes, dill sprigs and green peppercorns. Serve with toasted brown or granary bread.

TIP Most supermarkets sell packs of ready-flaked honey roast salmon but if unavailable just buy readycooked smoked salmon fillets and roughly flake the fish, discarding any skin and fine bones.

Place the rest of the salmon flakes in a food processor with the smoked salmon, butter, soft cheese, horseradish and lemon juice. Process until smooth and creamy. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for a further few seconds.

3.

Divide the mixture between 6 small ramekin dishes and level the surface. Cover and chill in the fridge until

Thame’s Christmas Lights Switch-On

Thame’s Christmas Lights will be switchedon on Friday 30 November at 7pm. Santa has the date in his diary and will be returning to his Grotto from 3:30pm, joined by two adorable reindeers, you can feed and pet. Or why not take a photo in his authentic sleigh? There will be indoor and outdoor entertainment throughout the event from ten local performance groups, as well as roaming princesses Rapunzel and Tinkerbell! Refreshment and gift stalls a plenty will line the High Street and many of our fantastic independent shops will have late-night opening. The iconic Lantern Parade will take place at 6:15pm, and the main Christmas lights will be switched-on at 7pm by the winner of this year’s Town Trail and the 36

Mayor, Cllr Ann Midwinter. To be in with a chance of winning, look out for this year’s Town Trail competition, running throughout November. The event is made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship and support of local businesses and community groups. We would like to thank this year’s sponsors: ASM Auto Recycling, Kubota, Risborough Carers, Lucy Electric, 3B Vehicle Hire & Servicing, Connect Scaffolding and Thame & District Housing Association. For the latest information, or to get involved with the event please go to www.thametowncouncil.gov.uk/christmas or search ‘Christmas in Thame’ on Facebook or #ChristmasInThame on Twitter. Christmas Carnival 2018 at Waddesdon Manor Decorated with displays inspired by the festivities and celebrations within Waddesdon’s collection, there truly is something for everyone at Christmas Carnival. Rooms within the East Wing and the Bachelors’ Wing will be dressed to evoke the glitz and glamour of the festive season, featuring 15ft trees adorned with over 10,000 fairy lights, and 3,000 themed baubles. The Armoury Corridor will be a sparkling affair, while the Breakfast Room will be reminiscent of Christmas celebrations in the 1930s and 40s, when James and Dorothy de Rothschild welcomed villagers, staff, friends and family to share in the festivities. As daylight fades to dusk, enjoy interactive animations and light installations, wander through a neon portal of light, and watch as coloured lights illuminate the Manor’s exterior, bringing its distinctive architecture to life. For the first time the exterior of the Stables will also be illuminated, depicting a wintry tale designed by Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Complementing the breath-taking decorations will be a delicious assortment of festive food and drinks. Each year Waddesdon’s chefs make more than 9,000 mince pies, filled with their special recipe mincemeat. The spectacular Wigwam Café will also be returning, the perfect place to enjoy a selection of toasty treats and winter drinks.

Christmas Fair

Saturday 10 November - Sunday 16 December 2018 A week longer than ever before, Waddesdon’s spectacular Christmas Fair is a shopping experience not to be missed. As befits the location, artisan producers, makers and craftsmen will be offering the very finest and, in many cases unique, gifts for friends and family. The fair will be set against the backdrop of the floodlit North Front of the Manor, with 20ft Christmas trees and a magical light and sound show. Remember Remember...... Your ears on the 5th November

Bonfire night is fast approaching and many of us will be looking forward to a fun night of fireworks with the family. Whether you are thinking of attending an organised event or just having a few fireworks in your garden, it is important to consider how you can protect your ears from lasting damage. Fireworks displays are great fun but are also very noisy events. In the U.K. the legal noise limit is 120dB for fireworks but this is 35dB above the level at which hearing damage can occur. The risk to your hearing depends on how long your ears are exposed to the loud noise, and at a level of 120dB it only takes 7 seconds to risk permanent damage. A common sign of damage to the ear is tinnitus which can be a ‘ringing or buzzing’ in the ear that won’t go away which can be very disturbing to live with. Another indication of hearing loss would be if you can no longer use a phone in one or other ear.

The best approach to avoid risks to your hearing is to wear some good earplugs. For young children ear defenders are recommended. You should also ensure you don’t stand too close to the fireworks, speaker systems, music amplifiers and other sources of loud noise. Keep your distance. If you find yourself close to a very loud noise source (120dB or above), without ear protection, plug your ears with your fingers immediately and move yourself away from the danger as quickly as possible. At Aston Hearing we believe in preventative measures and offer custom made earplugs which ensure the best possible fit for comfort and effectiveness. They still allow you to enjoy noisy events, background music and conversation whilst protecting your ears at the same time. We also provide a range of ear defenders and disposable ear plugs at our practices and can offer advice on the best approach.

Gardening

Winter Gardening As we come to the end of the gardening year, there are some tasks to carry out to make things easier in the Spring. It’s that time when the deciduous trees and shrubs start to shed their leaves and clearing them from your lawn and beds will help in a number of ways. Leaving leaves on your lawn will prevent the sun getting to the grass, and once they get wet and start to collect, they will form a nasty slimy mess that will stifle the lawn and create large muddy bald patches. If you can, get into a regime of clearing as many as you can every couple of days. By this time of year most of your bulbs, daffodils, hyacinth and crocus should have been planted, but keep the tulips for later. If planted too early, there is a danger of ‘tulip fire’, this is a fungal disease which produces unsightly brown spots and nasty looking twisted leaves. To avoid this happening, plant late in the year, even as late as Christmas . You want the frost to get to the ground before you plant your tulip bulbs, to kill any spores that are already in your soil. Another tip is to plant deep, much deeper than you would daffodils, 10 inches down if you can. Hopefully, you will be rewarded with swathes of colour in March, April and May. We find snowdrops ‘in the green’ are a much better bet than bulbs. ‘In the green’ means you get new snowdrops that are already growing and are in a sturdy clump. They are available in the new year, and will flower for you in the first year, and then naturalise and give you swathes of white for years to come. We will have the common single ‘Galanthus Nivalis’ and 58

the double ‘Flore Pleno’, but the season for snowdrops in the green is relatively short, so keep an eye out for our sign at the gate! One of the first tasks of the new vegetable gardening season will be choosing your seed potatoes and onion sets for next year. Seed Potatoes will be available just after Christmas, so do a little research to see which varieties may work best for you. We will have around 20 varieties - something for everyone. Well, that’s 2018 for you. It was a challenging one. First we had the Beast of The East, then the hottest summer that many of us can remember. It’s also been a sad year for us here, as we lost our Jack Russell, Edith. She was very popular with many of our customers, a very special little dog. Happy Gardening, See you soon,

Simon, Alison and all at Askett Nurseries www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Book Review

The Gift of a Great Read Stuck for the perfect present this Christmas? Or need some inspiration for your own wish list? Read on… For historical fiction fans Washington Black – Esi Edugyan 11-year-old slave Washington Black is taken from the sugar fields and lent to his tyrannical master’s brother, Titch, to work on a ‘cloudcutter’ hot air balloon. The duo form an unlikely friendship that, coupled with Washington’s artistic talent, could provide a way out of slavery. For history buffs Bloody Brilliant Women – Cathy Newman This book uncovers the ‘pioneers, revolutionaries and geniuses your history teacher forgot to mention’. Read about women such as engineer Beatrice Shilling, whose work played a role in helping RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain, and developmental biologist Anne McLaren, whose work paved the way for IVF. For romantic fiction fans A Miracle on Hope Street – Emma Heatherington When she learns that one act of kindness has transformed a man’s life, Ruth decides to put her own loneliness aside and create a Christmas to remember for people in need. A heart-warming tale that’s perfect for fans of JoJo Moyes and Marian Keyes. 64

For foodies Tasty Ultimate From quick and easy midweek dinners, to showstopping dinner party favourites, Tasty has them all. Recipes include Nashville Hot Turkey Tenders, Roast Pork Tex Mex Burritos, The Best Crispy Chicken Parmesan, Slow-Cooked Honey and Spice Lamb Shank, and Latte Coffee Cake. Recipes are simple to follow and bright photographs make every dish look mouthwateringly tempting. For parents Parent Alert, How To Keep Your Kids Safe Online – Nadia Sawalha, Kaye Adams and Will Geddes Thousands of kids will be receiving new smartphones or tablets this Christmas. But how do you make sure they’re not being bullied, giving too much information away to strangers or being targeted by predators? This book gives parents lots of actionable advice on how to keep kids safe online. For Harry Potter Fans The Crimes of Grindelwald – The Original Screenplay Albus Dumbledore enlists Newt Scamander to recapture Gellert Grindelwald, who’s recently escaped and is gathering followers. This is the second in the Fantastic Beasts series. It’s a screenplay of the recently released film, rather than a traditional novel, so it’s quicker to read but no less enjoyable. For young children The Jolly Christmas Postman – Janet and Allan Ahlberg This is an all-year-round favourite in our house. The Jolly Postman sets off to deliver letters and parcels to fairy-tale characters. Kids aged three and up will love opening each envelope to reveal the surprise inside – whether it’s a Christmas card for Baby Bear, a jigsaw for Humpty Dumpty or a game for Red Riding Hood. For older children A boxset Head to www.thebookpeople.co.uk to pick up a boxset. When I checked there were lots to choose from, including twelve Diary of a Wimpy Kid books for £14.99, ten How to Train Your Dragon books for £17.99, fifteen Roald Dahl favourites for £21.99, and six David Walliams books for £23.99. "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

How To Buy A Puppy – Top Tips Dr. Kathryn Miller BVSc CertAVP PgCertVPS MRCVS

With Christmas approaching, many people will begin thinking about purchasing a puppy. The old adage ‘A puppy is for life, not just for Christmas’ is never more important than at this time of year. For this reason, many breeders don’t produce puppies over the Christmas period, and most rescue centres don’t allow adoptions through the month of December – this may seem strict, but this is to attempt to reduce the devastating number of dogs that are returned to shelters the following Spring after outgrowing their impulse purchase novelty. If you are planning on buying a puppy - at any time of the year - please consider these 3 ‘top tips’. 1. Research your breed You may have your heart set on a particular breed of dog, but does that breed fit your lifestyle? Everyone loves a beautiful Border Collie – but are you able to provide 2+ hours of daily off lead running? If not, perhaps a more sedentary breed may be better. And whilst a Great Dane certainly makes a stunning companion, these mammoth dogs certainly are not designed for apartment living! 2. Research your breeder Not all breeders are equal. Monetary gain is not a good reason to breed dogs; neither is ‘to give my dog the experience of giving birth’. Before producing each litter, thought should be given to the temperament and health status of the dam and sire. Each breed (and crossbreed)

76

has its own known health defects, and a good breeder will have tested the parents against these. Speak with your vet about the importance of things such as hip scores, elbow scores, eye tests and genetic testing, to help avoid future heartbreak. 3. Meet the parents Puppies inherit much of their nature from their parents. It is vital to meet at least the dam and check she is approachable and friendly, as fearfulness and aggression can be passed onto the puppies. Many puppy farmers will give excuses for why the mother is not there, or will use a fake mother dog to trick well-meaning customers. If something doesn’t seem right then walk away and call the RSPCA to report the litter. Please realise that you are not ‘rescuing’ if you buy from a puppy farm, you are financially supporting puppy farming. If you need any help then please call Crossroads Veterinary Centre on 01494 459095 and our registered veterinary nurses would be happy to provide guidance and support.

Advice

Atopic Eczema in childhood What is atopic eczema? Atopic Eczema is itchy, dry, cracked, sore skin. Some children only have small patches of eczema, but others may experience widespread red, inflamed skin all over their body It can run in families, and often develops alongside other conditions, such as asthma and hay fever.

excluded, and how to replace foods to ensure a balanced diet.

Common triggers

Eczema is usually caused by a combination of factors. Common triggers include pet fur, pollens, grass, moulds, heat, cold, dust, irritants (like soaps and detergents), woollen clothing and foods.

Cutting a food out for an initial 2 weeks is long enough to work out whether your child should continue to exclude a food – and even then, most children can then start eating small amounts of that food without it triggering the eczema.

Which foods are most likely to trigger eczema in children?

Tanya Wright BSc Msc Allergy Specialist Registered Dietitian DT4990 | August 2018

Milk and egg are the most likely foods to trigger eczema in young children. These foods may trigger an itchy rash within half an hour (this suggests an immediate food allergy), or after several hours or even the next day (this suggests a delayed food allergy). If you suspect a food may be triggering your child’s eczema, start keeping a food and eczema diary. This will help you to identify which foods might be triggering the eczema.

Tanya Wright is a HCPC registered Dietitian specialising in the diagnosis and management of food allergy and other food hypersensitivity reactions in children and adults with gastrointestinal, dermatological and respiratory symptoms. She works predominately in the NHS but also runs a private dietetic service locally and in Harley Street London. She is a longstanding committee member of all the professional and patient support associations and author of several allergy cookbooks.

It is important to seek help from your GP or dietitian for advice on whether any foods should be

1. keep a diary of all foods eaten and how the eczema is 2. seek help from your GP or dietitian 3. exclude foods for no more than 2 weeks initially 4. read ingredients labels of all foods 5. use replacement foods to ensure the diet stays nutritious

Health

A few simple habits

can make life more rewarding Eat healthy foods. Exercise regularly. Don’t smoke. We hear these instructions from doctors, friends, parents, and strangers on the internet so often that the words start to lose their impact. And let’s face it, healthy habits are hard to adhere to. But perhaps if there’s proof they work, then they might be easier to accommodate?

5. People with healthy body weight to height proportion, have a higher chance of living longer than those outside normal range.

Research identified these 5 facts; 1. That people who consumed a moderate amount of alcohol had a better chance of living longer.

Researchers deduced five lifestyle factors that influence how long humans live. The researchers calculated that people who adhered to five things drink no more than one glass of alcohol per day (two for men), maintain a healthy body weight, eat a high-quality diet, abstain from smoking, and exercise at a moderate-to-vigorous pace (think a brisk walk, at least) for 30 minutes or more a day had a greater chance of living longer past age 50. The quality of life was not a measurement studied, however generally, it is understood a healthy life is a happier, longer one.

2. Not to neglect the preventive health benefits of simply adhering to a healthy diet. 3. If you want to live longer and you’re still smoking. Do whatever you can to stop. 4. Research has found that those who exercised for at least 30 minutes a day at a moderate to vigorous pace have the potential to live longer.
