Editors’

Letter

Welcome to the November / December issue of Chiltern View Magazine This issue is packed full of local community events, all hoping to get you in the festive spirit. It’s Panto season at the theatres, a time for Christmas and New Year’s parties with friends or work colleagues and lots of ideas of things to do with family, which all make this time of year very special. Why not try making one of the recipes we have from Beverley (p. 10), which can also double up as a personal Christmas present, or Tanya Wright (p.64) who has a lovely cake idea for those with

specific nutritional requirements but who refuse to compromise on taste! We also have many ways to support different charities and have fun at the same time. Why not take part in the Santa Dash, purchase Christmas gifts at a craft fair, arrange a ‘Purple Party’, attend a concert or order a letter from Santa as a wonderful surprise for a child. The ‘Lights Switch on’ is a lovely December tradition and we have details of both Thame’s (p.26) and Risborough’s (p.8) offering special evenings to meet local stars, build excitement for the arrival of Christmas and of course, get a glimpse of Santa, every child and many adult’s dream come true. We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Until next year,

Jan & Coralie

Homemade recipe gifts for Christmas

Christmas Fudge Ingredients for 77 pieces of fudge •1 x 397g can condensed milk •150ml milk •450g caster sugar •120g salted butter •pinch salt •2 tsp vanilla extract •100g dried cranberries, chopped •100g pecan nuts, chopped* •Grates zest of 1 orange You will need..... •Large saucepan •Food Thermometer •Wooden spoon •20cm x 30cm lined baking tray 1. Pour the condensed milk, milk, sugar and butter

into a saucepan and set it over a medium to low heat.

3. Once the butter and sugar have melted, bring

it to a rolling boil. Be careful as fudge boils hotter than water and can cause serious burns. Stir this constantly to make sure the mixture doesn’t burn to catch on the bottom of the pan

4. Boil the fudge for around 15 minutes, until

it reaches 118c. If you don’t have a sugar thermometer drop a little fudge into a glass of iced water, if it forms a soft ball immediately it’s ready. Remove from the heat and allow to cool to 110c stirring constantly.

5. Transfer to the bowl of an electric mixer, or

use a handheld mixer, add the salt, vanilla extract, cranberries, pecan nuts and orange zest and beat until the fudge is smooth, glossy and has cooled to around 75c.

6. Transfer to the greased, lined

baking tray and allow to cool fully before cutting into squares.

2. Grease and line a baking tin

Christmas Muffin Mix in a Kilner Jar Ingredients for the jar •225g self raising flour •1 tsp baking powder •½ tsp ground ginger •½ tsp ground cinnamon •1 tsp mixed spice •125g soft dark brown sugar •100g chopped hazelnuts* •100g mixed dried fruit, raisins, sultanas, currants, cranberries, cherries You will need..... •Weighing Scales •Teaspoon •Kilner Jar 1. Thoroughly wash and dry the kilner jar, then

layer the ingredients as they are in the list, starting with the flour (this will give you a lovely stripy effect), finishing with the mixed dried fruit. 10

2. Secure the lid and attach a wooden spoon with a ribbon and a card luggage tag with the cooking instructions.

Write on the luggage label:

Christmas muffin mix – empty the contents into a bowl and add 75g melted butter, 1 egg, 175ml milk. Stir well, fill 12 muffin cases in a muffin tin and bake for 20-25 minutes on 180°c or gas 4 © Beverley Glock 2019 * Omit for people with nut allergies

Your Local Theatre Competition

One Belle of a pantomime is on its way! The countdown is officially on to this year’s enchanting family pantomime, Beauty & the Beast at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. The stars of this year’s festive production include soap star Danny Walters (EastEnders, Benidorm) and returning due to popular demand Andy Collins (playing Louis Pot et Pan) and La Voix (playing Polly Pot et Pan). Beauty and the Beast is the Waterside’s 10th traditional family pantomime and tickets are selling fast for the annual production, fast becoming the hot Christmas date in family diaries! Andy Collins will be teaming up with La Voix for the 5th year and explained his love for the genre: ‘Panto is just magical. I love working with La Voix, we bounce off each other and genuinely love every minute of being on that stage. The rapport we have

with the audience is priceless and something I look forward to every year. We’ll be bringing back some of our favourite routines alongside plenty of new material. I can’t wait to get this year’s show on the road!’ Completing the festive line up are Michael Quinn playing Hugo Pompidou, and Amelia Adams-Pearce playing leading lady, Belle. Amelia is excited to be playing her favourite princess: ‘Belle is a complete dream to play! She is beautiful inside and out, yet feisty and assertive too, and fiercely independent. She’s very much a millennial, and a great modern day role model.’ Don’t miss this sparkling fairy tale, promising fun for all the family with plenty of panto slapstick, alongside stunning sets, dazzling costumes and an action-packed adventure in a cursed castle under the spell of an evil enchantress! Book today at the Box Office, call 0844 871 7607 (bkg fee. Calls cost 7p per min plus your phone company’s access charge) or visit atgtickets.com/aylesbury (bkg fee).

Competition Time! Get into the festive spirit early with lashings of sparkle and shine! For a chance to win 4 x tickets to see Beauty and the Beast starring Danny Walters, Andy Collins and La Voix at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre on Thursday 2nd January at 6pm, simply answer the following question correctly: What flower famously appears in the story of Beauty and the Beast: A) Geranium

B) Lily

C) Rose

Pet Health

Christmas is coming... By Fiona Mullan, RVN With Christmas just around the corner, it is a busy time of year in many households, which can be stressful for our pets as well as for us. How is the Christmas period stressful for pets? Visitors: Lots of people, familiar and unfamiliar coming and going can be disruptive to your pet’s usual routine. Nervous pets may be overwhelmed by lots of different people in the home and increased noise levels. Excitable children: Naturally children love Christmastime, but all the excitement can increase the level of noise in the home, and children may want to over-fuss/ play with pets they haven’t met before- who maybe aren’t used to children or would rather be left alone. Owners going away: Owners may go on holiday over the Christmas period or be out for the day, leaving the pet alone longer than normal. They may also have to go into kennels/cattery or be left with a ‘stranger’ looking after them in the home. Flashing lights/noisy decorations: They are pretty for us to look at but can be frightening to pets. Fireworks: These loud sudden explosions and flashes in the sky cause intense anxiety for animals. How do I know if my pet is stressed? • Hiding away • Trembling, shaking, shivering • Toileting within the house • Over grooming • Lip licking • Panting • Destructive behaviour 30

Steps to minimise pet stress this Christmas • If your pet is easily overwhelmed, try to introduce things gradually, e.g. avoid putting all decorations up in one day and suddenly changing their environment. • Supervise children with pets at all times. • Allow your pet a quiet/clutter free area to hide away and escape to if they need it. • Continue normal regimes as much as possible, e.g. feeding and exercise times. • Consider use of pheromone diffusers in the run up to Christmas. Ask your vet or nurse about the use of calming supplements. Remember that both of these are most effective when started weeks before the event, so allow plenty of time. • If someone is looking after your pet in your home whilst you are away, ensure they know your pet’s normal routine and try to introduce them to your pet a few times in advance. • Be wary of crackers/party poppers, etc. when pets are near. • If your pet has firework phobia, do not over fuss them whilst fireworks are going off, this will reinforce the behaviour. Act normally and try to distract them with toys, radio/TV noise or play. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Kenzo’s Diary - A dog’s life 5 Today was Sunday and I had woken up after a long eventful night. I love the weekends because I have all my family around me, meaning I get the constant 24-hour attention I deserve. But there’s one very strange reason I don’t like Saturday nights. Whilst I was half way through my dreams of running about a field chasing kittens and running with horses, I was rudely awoken. I heard someone outside, their footsteps were silly and spaced out, it was confusing. However, as the sole protector and hero of the house I leapt fearlessly out of the comfy and safe blanket and slowly snuck to the door to try to get a view of the “hooman”. Nothing… I heard something drop, it was metal, and my mind was racing. What was it? A phone, a picklock, or worse, a knife? I warned him, ‘woofing’ and ‘grr-ing’, knowing that any “hooman” would fear my big, white, fluffy polar bear stature. “Kenzo! Shhh!” the “feef” exclaimed quietly but forcefully! He had done his homework, although I would never fall for such a pathetic attempt at silencing me. In fact, I raised the volume, waking mummy and daddy and making them aware there was a robbery attempt in progress. A dark shadowy figure approached the front door, he leant over to retrieve the object he dropped and placed it into the key-hole. This was it, he had somehow got a key and was coming in right that second. “HELLLOOOO”, the “feef” said enthusiastically, throwing my guard off, though not deterring my “strongness”. The light came on and it was blinding; like an explosion of light, blinding me. I was scared, the “feef” had realised that I was never actually going to do anything other than “woof” and “grr” at him. I looked down in fear,

32

shutting my eyes as my tail flopped between my legs and my shoulders dropped sadly. I felt a faint touch on the top of my head before the strange “hooman” wobbled uncontrollably into the wall, stumbling and struggling to take off his shoes; what was he doing? I then got an unmistakable smell sting my super sensitive sniffer. Tequila and lemon. I realised then, it could only be one person. My OWN brother. He was trying to sneak into my house drunk at 4am. I grinned and smiled, “Happy to see me?” he slurred. I thought to myself, “No, I can just hear mummy and daddy walking down the stairs and they sound very, VERY angry.”

Look how I’ve grown since last Christmas!!

Do you need help with Accounts, Tax Returns and Tax Deadlines? • • •

Someone to help you prepare that pesky tax return. Someone who’s built a business already who can give you practical advice. Someone who’s not scared of – in fact relishes – taking on the tax man. Someone who understands tax planning. Someone who understands inheritance tax. Someone who understands Capital Gains Tax. Someone who can double check your PAYE and Coding Notices Someone who can deal with individuals, sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, LLPs and corporate entities with multiple branches. Someone who understands rental income, expenses and reliefs. Someone who can see how to reduce your tax liabilities, whether as an individual or as a company. Someone who can help you secure finance. Someone with a 100% success rate with Tax Enquiries. Someone who gets excited at the idea of a challenge. Someone who understands VAT. … and lots, lots more.

The Technical Stuff: RBA has been established for over 20 years as Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisors in Beaconsfield and Princes Risborough. RBA was one of the first Chartered Firms to be awarded, in 2005, the ACCA Quality Checked Award, which recognises that I apply best professional practice procedures, and I have maintained this standard ever since. I have over 20 years’ experience of combating Inland Revenue Enquiries with a 100% success rate. The Non - Technical Stuff I have a personal approach, in that I like to meet new clients face to face, to see if we would be comfortable working together and can build mutual trust—I offer an initial free, no obligation meeting to see how we both feel. I’ve always been interested in tax because it’s about saving people money, which gives me a lot of satisfaction. Tax returns are stressful to most people and they are often unaware of the expenses that can be claimed On occasions I’ve had cause to challenge the Inland Revenue and I’ve never lost a challenge yet! I have always been fascinated by ensuring that medium and small size businesses pay the least legal amount possible of all taxes, including Income Tax, Corporation Tax, VAT, Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax. I thoroughly enjoy helping Sole Traders, Partnerships and Limited Liability Partnerships plan their tax strategies. I specialise in reducing tax liabilities with the formation of Limited Companies with tax planning.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue My name is Spacey; I’m a Lakeland Terrier Mix and about 9 years old. My carers tell me I’m a wonderful girl. I found myself returned to SDR through absolutely no fault of my own. I was incredibly sad and heartbroken when I was returned to rescue, but with the love and TLC from my carers, I have settled back into the routine easily. I much prefer it when I have the company and attention of my carers. Being a typical Terrier, I am still a very active girl for my age and I love to be outside, investigating and exploring new areas. I would enjoy having a good sized, fully enclosed garden to play in as I will not be able to be off-lead when out on walks. I love to play with my squeaky toys and will happily bring it back to you, although I will take my time in dropping it. I would benefit from lots of interaction from my owners as I like to be kept mentally stimulated. I am not good around other animals, so I must be muzzled at all times when out in public places 36

though wearing my muzzle does not bother or faze me in the slightest. I would make a great addition to a quiet household with owners who are experienced with Terriers. I can be left for a few hours at a time, but this should be built up gradually whilst I am settling into my new home. In a home with no other animals, I will bring joy and happiness into your home and hearts. I am a very affectionate girl who just adores people. Can you offer this lovely girl a loving and permanent new home? www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695 To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Healthy Eating over Xmas Christmas is one day. Yes, true – but the celebrations go on for weeks! By following a few simple rules, you can manage your health and food so that by new year you can still fit in ‘that dress’ or ‘that special suit’ • Always use sugar free mixers • Missing meals leads to snacking on high fat, high salt / sugar foods so keep to a regular meal pattern including 5 fruit and veg a day • Skip the 4th course of a meal - if you choose cheese and biscuits, make that your dessert • No snacking when you get home from a latenight party! • Don’t stand by the snacks bowl at a party - you are likely to finish the bowl!

• Limit or stay away from nibbling on high fat canapés - sausage rolls, fried snacks and humus type dips • Don’t have seconds or finish other people’s food Do enjoy what you do eat and remember you will feel better if you limit your alcohol, get 8 hours sleep a night and don’t smoke. Being happy and having fun reduces stress which is great for health, so make sure you enjoy yourself. Don’t forget to keep active too, dancing is fun and a great way to burn calories and keep active. Making healthier choices is just that - it doesn’t mean missing out - just eating and drinking in moderation and keeping that work-life balance. Health

Recurring Postural Pain So can you cure bad posture? There are many sources that give advice with regard to posture, but we must be mindful as to whether it is the immediate symptoms we seek to cure (back pain for example) or an underlying reason. My time in clinical practice has shown me that most people want the immediate symptom of pain managed and often will not realise there is an underlying cause. The professional insight into what might be driving their posture change, often facilitates any recovery to be sustained. If someone is subconsciously adopting a posture, making them aware of it means they can take ownership of it and learn to regularly move out of that posture to prevent excessive strain. Posture is not a rigid concept, it represents something more fluid with considerable range for change.

72

In all instances, I would recommend simple changes to your daily life, including positioning, lifting technique, exercise tolerance, stress management and work-life balance; All of these are good starting points. It is also about considering both the physiological and psychological stressors. Failure to do this will inevitably lead to repeated episodes, a deepening perception of pain and a delayed recovery. When particularly troublesome, it may be necessary to seek appropriate advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Best wishes, David

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

Start the New Year with the Power of Positivity The fact that 1 in 4 people experience mental health issues each year (mhfaengland, 09/09/2019), should come as no surprise, given the challenges in the modern World. Juggling family life, career progression, against a backdrop of seemingly never ending negative news and associated Social Media pressures. Taking care of our health is instrumental to our quality of life. We know we should eat our five a day and exercise regularly to stay physically fit. Many of our New Year’s resolutions centre around this, but what do we do to look after our minds? I found myself struggling to keep the various plates in my life spinning and something had to give, before they came crashing down. Through exploring solutions, I discovered that taking care of my mental health need not involve spending hours a day meditating and doing Yoga. (as fabulous as they are), but there are changes that can be made in an instant! This is where the Power of Positivity comes in. Only you can control whether today is going to be a good day or a bad day and it starts with a simple thought: “There is always a silver lining, if you look hard enough - if you think positively then positive things will happen”. However, whilst many of us would strive to embrace a positive mindset, life has a habit of getting in the way, putting the most robust positive mental attitude (PMA) to the test. 76

For when that happens here are some simple methods that I have used: • I play that song that just cheers me up! • I watch a funny video clips (Michael McIntyre starts my day with a giggle) or 10-minute meditation and motivational talks on You Tube. • I take some deep breaths whilst making a cuppa. • Healing crystals are my best friend. • Visualising my goals makes them happen. • I get out in nature. • Go to my happy place either literally or in my mind. Mine is the top of West Wycombe Hill. • I can either choose to be negative and frustrated or I can choose to be happy and healthy. Having experienced first-hand the Power of Positivity and having supported colleagues, friends and family, I have embraced my passion further and have trained as a Reiki Level 2 Practitioner. Reiki works by channelling positive energy into your body. Reiki practitioners typically place their hands over the affected areas of the body that need a boost. As well as being supremely relaxing and therapeutic, Reiki also helps to heal emotional, physical and mental issues. I now have a greater understanding of managing my mental wellbeing and my journey has taught me the negative impact that being self-deprecating has and vital techniques to ensure I lead positive life. Remember looking after your mental health is so important, you have the power to make today a great day; “There is always a silver lining, if you look hard enough - if you think positively then positive things will happen”. Hartwell Nurseries If there’s one thing we look forward to every winter, it’s getting the joyous Christmas tree. From the excitement of choosing your favourite fir, to the gorgeous smell of pine wafting through your home, there’s nothing quite as festive as a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Having picked the perfect Christmas tree, follow these handy tips to keep it looking at its freshest throughout the festive season. Tip 1 Make sure your tree gets enough water. If you cut off a couple of centimetres from the stump, this will enable the tree to absorb more water and help it last longer. Freshly cut trees are very thirsty and can consume up to 4 Litres of water in the first 24 hours. Tip 2 It’s a good idea to choose a suitable Christmas tree stand to help keep your tree looking its best. Choose a stand with a water reservoir to prevent your tree from drying out. Ensure the water reservoir on your stand is topped up regularly and keep the room cool when it’s not in use. Tip 3 Choose a cool spot indoors away from radiators and choose low-heat fairy lights. Give it plenty of space so that air can circulate, too.

Once your Christmas tree is ready, why not add some festive colour to your home. Flowering in December and January, Poinsettias are the ultimate Christmas decoration - as classic as the Christmas tree. With vivid red bracts and dark green leaves, their striking appearance makes them the classic table or windowsill centrepiece for the home. Coming in all shapes, sizes and colours, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without them. Don’t forget, when all the festivities are over, you can put your tree to good use by recycling it. If you opted for a pot-grown Christmas tree, remember to plant it as soon as possible in January so you can enjoy it the following year. Select a spot that has well drained soil, sun, and enough space for the tree to sit comfortably. Then all you need to do is keep the tree watered and protected. With warm wishes for the festive season

Naturally outstanding One of the advantages of living in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is that, wherever you are, something beautiful is never far away. And it’s heartening that so many people volunteer their spare time to help professionals to look after that beauty, often in the shape of nature reserves. One of the most rewarding for all-year round interest lies at Aston Rowant. This pleasant reserve, managed by Natural England, straddles the M40, about seven miles northeast of Watlington. It isn’t just humans who keep Aston Rowant in good order: around 300 speckle-faced Beulah sheep, a small herd of feral goats and sometimes cattle from neighbouring farms are enlisted to ensure that the chalk grassland and juniper scrub stays under control. Plenty of birds such as finches, wheatears, whitethroats, blackcaps and green woodpeckers enjoy the reserve; in winter, the visitors are more likely to be fieldfare and redwing. Chalkhill blue and silver-spotted, dingy and grizzled skipper butterflies are a feature of the summer, along with orchids (pyramidal, greater butterfly, frog, bee and fragrant varieties). Various fungi appear in the autumn. The most distinctive feature of Aston Rowant is the Talking Trail, a mile-long circular route which passes

84

six sculptures by various artists. Each sculpture has a ‘listening post’ which you wind up by hand. Each listening post has six channels from which to choose, including commentary from the artists and short stories, poems and songs read or sung by local schoolchildren and community groups about the reserve and its inhabitants. The sculptures make visual reference to bats, hares and the hazel dormouse. The Flying Machine sculpture by Nick Garnett, brilliantly positioned on the hillside to suggest imminent flight, pays tribute to the Chilterns’ beloved red kites. There are two car parks, at Beacon Hill and at Cowleaze Wood car park. For keen walkers, the reserve is within about half a mile of the Ridgeway. While you’re here: try two other local reserves run by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust; Chinnor Hill (OX39 4BJ or 4BB, one mile east of Chinnor) and Oakley Hill (OX39 4RR, one mile south of the town), whose early autumn highlights include the bright purple beauty of the Chiltern gentian. Neil Matthews is the co-author, with his wife Helen, of Slow Travel: The Chilterns and the Thames Valley, a new guidebook available to buy online (bradtguides.com) or in local bookshops.

Book Review

The Gift of Reading Looking for the perfect book to give someone this Christmas? Maybe we can help… The Giver of Stars – Jojo Moyes Times are hard in Kentucky at the end of the Great Depression. Five women set out to bring some light back into people’s lives, through books. This isn’t your average mobile library; the librarians have to travel hundreds of miles every week, on horseback. Amongst them is Margery – whose family and unconventional lifestyle mean she’s all but ostracised by ‘polite society’. And Alice – a lonely incomer far from home. A great story, great characters and great writing make The Giver of Stars the perfect gift. The Ten Thousand Doors of January – Alix E. Harrow January Scaller finds her first Door when she’s seven years old. It leads to somewhere far from her cosseted life as the foster daughter of a rich man. Little girls grow up and learn not to believe in the impossible. But then a strange book appears, just as January’s real father vanishes, and January sets out to discover the truth about Doors. One of the best fantasy books of 2019, this is a must for fans of Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman. The Secret Series – Pseudonymous Bosch Young adventure fans are sure to appreciate this series, starting with the first book – The Name 88

of This Book is Secret. (My ten year old daughter devoured all five in quick succession.) Cass and Max-Ernest are unlikely friends who find themselves caught up in a quest to uncover a secret. Danger, mystery, friendship, villains and humour abound. Sweet Sorrow – David Nicholls It’s 1997. Charlie Lewis has just left school and has one long summer ahead of him before finding a job and entering the world of adults. Joining a theatre group wasn’t in his plans, but if that’s what it takes to win the love of Fran Fisher, he’s prepared to unleash his (very) hidden thespian. An enjoyable, humorous book ideal for anyone who came of age in the 90s or who has bittersweet memories of their first love. Never Have I Ever – Joshilyn Jackson A seemingly innocent game to liven up a book club turns into a tense game of cat and mouse as one woman threatens to reveal a long-buried secret. How far will Amy go to protect the fragile life she’s built for herself? A good choice for fans of twisting, suspense-packed thrillers. The Hairy Bikers’ One Pot Wonders – Si King and Dave Myers The Hairy Bikers are back with another cookery book packed with more than 100 recipes. Create delicious dishes with minimum effort and mess. Recipes include Sausage and Bean Tray Bake, and Boozy Syllabub Trifle. Just make sure the recipient of your gift invites you over for dinner soon.

Call for local Santas to take to the streets for local Hospice care Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity are putting out a call for Santas of all ages to take to the streets of Haddenham and Wendover this December. After the success of last year’s event in Wendover which saw over 320 Santas run, walk and scoot 2km through the town raising over £2,000 for local hospice care, the Charity has added an additional event this year in Haddenham. The Santa Dash will take place in Haddenham on Sunday 1st December and in Wendover on Saturday 21st December. The Santa Dashes are suitable for all the generations, making this a great Christmas event for all the family. All entrants will be provided with a Santa suit to make a splash of seasonal colour through the streets. 90

A very special visitor will join the ever popular Florrie Bear to set the crowd of Santas on their way, cheer everyone on and say hello to all the children. You can register for the events online at the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity website at fnhospice.org.uk/events/ santa-dashes/, with Early Bird discounts available until midnight on 31st October or call 01296 429975 for more information. Last year’s Santa Dash in Wendover was a huge success and raised over £2,000 for hospice services
