Editors’ Letter Welcome to the November/December issue of Chiltern View magazine. As I write this we are still enjoying fabulous Autumn weather and it is difficult to believe that winter and Christmas are just around the corner. Many of you will now be planning your Festive events and we have plenty of advertisers here at Chiltern View who are able to help you , local pubs, restaurants and hotels for festive eating, drinking and celebrating, and many businesses offering gift vouchers or Christmas products to suit almost everyone. Chiltern View is once again packed with local advertisers and a huge amount of Community information covering several months. We have been pleased with the response we have had in the new delivery areas and we welcome additional community information from these areas – spread the word about all the fantastic things going on in the local community, just e.mail us at villageview@live.co.uk ( the next magazine will be the Jan/Feb 2014 issue and the copy deadline is 1st December) We would like to wish all our readers and advertisers a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Here at Chiltern View we do not send out Christmas Cards but choose to donate the money instead to a local charity. If you know of a charity that would benefit from a Christmas donation please let us know at villageview@live.co.uk and we will consider it for this years charitable giving. Until next time……………….

Firework Laws
November 5th is synonymous with fireworks, bonfires and effigies of Guy Fawkes. Hot soup and jacket potato teas, scarves and woolly gloves and excited children all want to be part of late night fun. Make sure that you understand the laws, though, surrounding fireworks if you’re planning on doing your own rather than going to an organized event. The law says you must not set off, or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places. Fireworks must not be set off between 11pm and 7am. The exceptions are Bonfire Night when the cutoff is midnight; New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year when PAGE 10
the cutoff is extended until 1am. You can be fined up to £5,000 and/or imprisoned for 3 months for buying or using fireworks illegally, as well as getting an on the spot fine of £80 so check the rules, stay safe and enjoy the fun! Christmas dangers for pets!
We all like to over indulge and eat and drink things we shouldn’t at Christmas but it is important to make sure that our pets do not. Dogs and cats might get hold of these common toxins at any time of the year but at our practice there is definitely an increase in cases around Christmas time!
At high doses it can induce a coma.
Dogs: Chocolate (toxin theobromine) – higher amounts present in cocoa powder and dark chocolate than in milk and white chocolate. Clinical signs include vomiting, tummy ache, drooling, excitability and wobbliness. In severe cases it can cause convulsions and kidney disease. Grapevine fruits (grapes, currants, raisins, sultanas) – Only some dogs are sensitive to this toxin. Common signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, blood in the urine, faeces and vomit, weakness and wobbliness, kidney failure. Xylitol (artificial sweetener) – present in a lot of sweets and cakes. It causes low blood sugar levels leading to wobbliness and weakness.
Cats: Poinsettia – low risk. Vomiting and lethargy but normally self limiting Lillies – All parts of the plant are toxic and might cause vomiting, depression, kidney failure.
Macadamia nuts – clinical signs are often mild but include weakness, wobbliness, vomiting, diarrhoea, bloat. Pot pourri – diarrhoea, breathing problems, collapse, kidney failure.
There are many other toxins not listed. If your animal eats any of the above or anything else you are unsure about please ring your vet for advice. Also be aware at Christmas of ingestion of rich foods e.g. animal fat, cream; foreign bodies e.g. baubles, ribbons; electric shocks from fairy lights.

The Perfect Christmas Pud
Makes 4 x 1 pint (450ml) or 2 x 2 pint (1 litre)
Preparation time 30 minutes plus 5-6 hours steaming time, plus 2 hours re-steaming on the day of eating.
Method Mix together all the dry ingredients. Stir in the eggs and brandy and mix together thoroughly. Scrape the mixture into 4 x 1 pint (450ml) or 2 x 2 pint (1 litre) lightly-greased pudding basins. Put a circle of baking parchment and foil over the top of each basin and tie securely round the rim with string. Make a string handle by tying both round and over the basin, to make it easier to pick out of the pan after cooking. Put the basins in a large steamer of boiling water and cover with a lid.
Ingredients 225g/8oz golden caster sugar 225g/8oz vegetarian suet 340g/12oz sultanas 340g/12oz raisins 225g/8oz currants 120g/4oz chopped candied peel 120g/4oz plain flour 120g/4oz fresh white breadcrumbs 60g/2oz flaked almonds Zest of 1 lemon 5 eggs, beaten 1level tsp ground cinnamon 1level tsp mixed spice 1 level tsp freshly grated nutmeg Pinch of salt 150ml/5fl oz brandy or rum PAGE 18
Boil for 5-6 hours, topping the boiling water up from time to time if necessary so that it doesn’t boil dry. If you don’t have a steamer, you can use a large pan and stand the basins on inverted saucers placed in the base. Pour in boiling water to come a third of the way up the sides of the pudding bowls. Cover and steam as before. Cool. Change the baking parchment and foil covers for fresh ones and tie up as before. Store in a cool cupboard until Christmas Day. To serve the pudding on Christmas Day, steam for 2 hours and serve with brandy butter, rum sauce, cream or home-made custard.

We would like to wish all of our customers a very Happy Christmas
Dog of the Month
Hi, my name is Darlene and I’m a 5 year old Jack Russell Terrier Mix.
I am a dear little girl who loves human company and I am good with other dogs. I don’t like to be handled too much and I prefer to be treated as a dog. I will need an active home with owners who will ensure I have doggy friends once home. I will make a wonderful addition to your home. I could live with another dog (subject to us meeting), possibly cats and I would prefer a home where any children are aged 8 years and over. If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695. It would be great to see you! PAGE 26

Health Matters Flu - Will there be flu epidemic this year ? For most of us the last major flu epidemic in the 1970s is a distant memory. However the swine flu outbreak in 2009 lingers in peoples minds. It is impossible to predict when the next epidemic might be.To help prevent flu, and other seasonal illnesses it is important to look after your health. Your body’s natural immunity, its inbuilt ability to fight infections, is boosted by a healthy diet. Aim for the recommended “five a day” of fresh fruit & vegetables. Although lots of people take Vitamin C to boost their immunity, there is no evidence to support the use of this or any other supplements. Your body’s immunity is lowered by smoking and by a high alcohol intake. Quit smoking. You can contact the FREE local NHS no smoking support service www.smokescape.org and many pharmacies offer stop smoking support. Reduce your alcohol intake to not more than the recommended 14 units/ week for women and 21 units/week for men. Avoid binge drinking. Stress lowers your immunity whereas regular exercise improves it and helps reduce the stress. A number of chronic medical conditions and some prescription drugs (and recreational drugs) increase susceptibility. Pregnancy also results in a lowered immune state. The NHS provides free flu and pneumonia immunisations to people with at risk medical conditions and to all people over 65 yrs and under 5s. Your doctors’ surgery will have been giving these since October. Most people entitled to free immunisations will be invited by their surgery. Check with your surgery if you think you should be having a free flu jab and have not had one. Some surgeries and many pharmacies offer jabs to anyone prepared to pay for them, but supplies are limited. PAGE 34
The flu virus varies every year and scientists have to “guess” the likely make up of this years variety, based on patterns throughout the rest of the world, some six months before the winter, in order to give the drug companies sufficient time to make flu vaccines to meet this years demand. Proper flu, as opposed to the common cold and other viruses, which are commonly confused with it, is very disabling and can last several weeks. It is associated with very high temperatures, lethargy and whole body muscle ache. It can make you tired for many weeks after recovery. If you get flu stay indoors, do not visit your doctor and risk infecting other vulnerable people. Your doctor has no medication to help. Drink plenty of clear fluids and take regular paracetamol or ibuprofen. There is no evidence that other expensive proprietary medicine work any better than the simple ones. Old fashioned remedies like hot honey and lemon can be soothing for sore throats, along with aspirin gargles and menthol sweets. Antibiotics have no place in treating viral infections and their inappropriate use encourages the development of resistant bugs including MRSA and C diff, both of which have been problems for our local hospitals in recent times. Stay healthy during the winter. Our thanks to Stokenchurch Medical Centre for conributing to this article.

‘Booted Up’ And ready For Business
The Boot at Bledlow Ridge has had a rocky road in the past few years but thanks to a huge amount of hard work and a brand new refurbishment, new managers Emma and Andy Goddard look like they have found winning formulae.
During the winter months there is a semi-permanent marquee for extra drinking or dining space. Emma in particular, having grown up in Bledlow Ridge knows of the importance of keeping this pub such a important part of the village, a meeting point and place to link the community.
The aim of the new look is to appeal to locals and customers wanting a drink, as well as diners wishing to enjoy delicious food from a varied and creative menu, prepared by head chef Andrew Hipgrave. With years of experience, having previously been head chef at a restaurant in Cookham, he has devised a menu with something to suit everyone. Emma and Andy have exciting plans for the pub, including quiz and themed nights, with the occasional live band as well. This is a lovely pub and wonderful that it has been re-energised both for the villagers of Bledlow Ridge and the surrounding areas. The future’s looking extremely bright for the Boot and with both the bar and restaurant already very busy, it is advisable to book if you want a table. The Boot also offers coffees and pastries from 10am Tues-Fri.
The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed whilst mixing both a traditional and modern look which attracts couples, families and dog walkers. They can even cater for larger parties and functions as the lovely, large garden can easily make room for a marquee. PAGE 36
Make this your choice for your next evening out and enjoy a drink or a meal in the comfortable yet stylish surroundings of the Boot and don’t forget to tell your friends.

Andy and Emma welcome you to The Boot - newly-refurbished, modern country pub and eating house. Unwind in the heart of the picturesque Chiltern Hills whilst enjoying fresh, locally produced food, local ales and fabulous wines. The menu reflects the chef ’s desire to create exciting dishes suitable for all tastebuds, so families can dine in style. Sunday lunches ‘served until 6pm’. The Boot boasts a huge garden for when the weather is warm enough, but if not a cosy log fire welcomes you inside. Summer and winter marquees can cater for larger events or simply as extra room for drinks or a meal. We are also able to cater for various functions so give us a call.

Give it Some Welly!
Wintry wet weather has us reaching for our wellies, but how much thought do we give them really? Hard-working wellies deserve a bit of TLC now and then.
First things first. A lot of wellies split at the heel seam, and this is because we insist on removing them using a step or our other foot to prise them off. Invest in a proper boot-remover. It will preserve the life of your wellies and make them much easier to take-off. CLEAN THEM. Yes - really. How often do you put your boots away still clogged with mud? Take the time to rinse them with clean water then spray them with a boot protector. If your wellies are the sort with a zip, make sure the zip is clean and free-running before storing the boots. Spray the zip with a silicone spray and they’ll last for years. Store them properly in a cool dry place. PAGE 38
Don’t dry kid’s wellies on a radiator as they will become brittle and perish. Don’t leave them in a freezing greenhouse or shed either. A boot rack is great, because it lets you store them upside down (less chance of spiders or mice taking up residence!) and allows the air to circulate – meaning they won’t smell. Finally, there are some terrific, colourful and fashionable wellies on the market today, so there’s no excuse not to take the kids puddle-jumping. Go on, give it some welly! By Louise Addison

What is Messy Church? These are some of the comments from the children and adults who have already been to Lane End’s Messy Church! • “it’s brilliant” • “it’s free!” • “you get to make things” • “you have fun with your friends and make new ones!” • “you do something altogether as a family” • “relaxed family worship” Messy Church was launched on Easter Saturday earlier this year, to provide a different style of worship that would appeal to families. We meet about three times a year, either on a Saturday or Sunday at the Lane End Village Hall. There are no age restrictions and all are very welcome to join in the fun. What happens at Messy Church? The format for each session remains loosely the same, with each session based around a different theme and lasting for about two hours. For the first 60 minutes “messy” activities are offered relating to the theme – during past sessions we have made footprints in paint, pinned a tail on a donkey, made pretty necklaces, bracelets, keyrings and decorated Joseph’s coat. It is a time for everyone to get creative and get stuck in. Following the activities is a short service (approx 30mins). This is simple in style, with the children encouraged to join in and show everyone the things that have been made. A couple of songs are sung and a bible story linked to the theme of the day is shared.
PAGE 50
We finish off by sharing a meal, giving everyone to a chance to sit down and chat – adults and children alike. We hope you will be able to join us for one (if not all!!) of our sessions and have some “Messy Fun”! Our next session is on Sunday 1st December, 3pm – 5.30pm. It will be a Messy Christmas with lots of Christmassy crafts and some carols! We look forward to seeing you there! Messy Church Team, Lane End messychurchlaneend@gmail.com

I would recommend LighterLife to anyone. The proof as they say is, no pun intended, in the pudding. Autumn is a really good time to embark on the LighterLife plan. And just think, if you start now you could be three stone lighter for your Christmas celebrations.

Plant of the Month – Crazy Daisy For a burst of late flowers, especially in containers, the Argyranthemum frutescens “Crazy Daisy” is a perfect choice. Indeed they work well as a mass of colour in mixed flowerbeds, interspersed with other bushes particularly roses who enjoy the same high water consumption. Flowering best in spring these plants, if looked after, will give you another big flower show in the autumn. In harsher climates you may need to replace them each year. Protect them against the wind in coastal gardens and ensure that during hot weather they are watered well at least every three days. PAGE 54
These are also great as you don’t need to do any deadheading!

A Good Read The Cuckoo’s Calling – Robert Galbraith
Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months, then you will know that there is actually no such person as Robert Galbraith: Galbraith is really JK Rowling. Much has been made in the press of Rowling’s ‘secret’ authorship of a crime novel. The key question, however, should be ‘is it any good?’ And the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. While Rowling was understandably angry that her cover was blown by some careless gossip, the fact that this shot the book to the top of the bestseller charts undoubtedly widened its potential audience. Even before this, however, the story had been critically acclaimed by a range of fellow crime writers, and it is easy to see why. Cormoran Strike, the central character, fits well alongside the range of eclectic private detectives that populate the genre. An army veteran, with a chequered past, physically and mentally scarred by his experiences, he is believable and likeable from the start. We know enough to keep us guessing, but never fully get inside his head. The supporting characters are equally well drawn – Robin, his receptionist and almostassistant, acts as an ideal foil – and the setting is given careful treatment. By chance, I read the book whilst staying in London, close to Strike’s fictional office on Denmark Street, and was almost able to trace his steps at times. The novel itself is well plotted – again, no surprise – and moves at a strong pace as Strike investigates the death of Lula Landry, model and style icon. Strike’s own past is explored through hints and flashes, which contrast with the celebrity haunts of Landry and her associates, adding an interesting counterpoint. PAGE 60
Many reviewers have claimed that Rowling’s authorship is obvious here, but I would disagree, and had I not known, I would not have guessed. In any case it is immaterial. Cormoran Strike is a million miles away from Harry Potter, and the audience for each book is completely different. This is crime fiction, well plotted, engaging and leaving you in immediate hope for a return of Strike. What more can we ask?
Charlotte’s Web – EB White
For some readers, the very title of this book brings a lump to the throat. From the first line ‘Where’s Papa going with that axe?’ to the last, it is beautifully told and instantly memorable. The story of Fern’s relationship with Wilbur, the runt she saves from her father’s axe, and of Wilbur’s relationship with Charlotte, the spider who convinces the world that Wilbur is ‘some pig’, the tale rewards reading and re-reading. Like all the best stories, the central message of Charlotte’s Web is the power of language. Charlotte really is ‘a true friend and a good writer’ both at once. For young readers, it also shows some of the realities of life and of growing up – the comic scenes involving Templeton the rat, for example, and Fern’s brother Avery, are interspersed with some harsh messages. If you can, track down an edition with Garth Williams’ illustrations, which complement the story perfectly. And try not to give away the ending as you read aloud – but be careful to have some tissues to hand. By Kath Bennett
