Editors Letter Welcome to the September/October issue of Chiltern View Magazine. Chiltern View Magazine was launched 11 years ago in the Stokenchurch area as a focus for community information and a platform for truly local businesses to promote their goods and services. At the heart of the community at that time was Stokenchurch Lloyds Bank, tucked away in a very convenient spot with plentiful parking, so they were the first stop for starting a new business. Gill Williams, who had already been with Lloyds for many years, could not have been more helpful

and enthusiastic. What a difference it made to be able to discuss the business proposal and account options with someone so familiar with local businesses and community. Over the years it has been an absolute pleasure to pop into the local bank and be welcomed by a friendly face and we will miss both Lloyds and Gill hugely now that the branch has sadly closed. All of us at Chiltern View would like to say a big thank you and wish all the staff who have now moved on, best wishes for the future. Chiltern View has grown but still covers a very local area and continues the mission to promote local community and business and to spread the word about all the amazing events in our area. Local events to look out for in the next couple of months include Kop Hill Climb (16th/17th September) and Thame Food Festival (30th September/1st October) – with full details in this magazine. We do hope you all enjoy reading the latest magazine.

Book Review

Intriguing Escapes Secrets, lies and mysteries are at the heart of this month’s picks. Four Riddles for Jane Austen (and her artful maid Tilly) – Gabrielle Mullarkey Our guest author for September / October is Gabrielle Mullarkey, a widely published writer living in the Thame area. Gabrielle works as a freelance journalist and writer of fiction, with two other novels print-published, and ‘Four Riddles’ ‘published by Corazon Books on Amazon. ‘Four Riddles’ is written to coincide with 2017 as the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. In the book, Jane use her marginal place in society to team up with her loyal maid, Tilly, and unmask the malicious, vengeful and desperate in a world where money and status are all, not everyone is who they seem and secrets are worth killing – and dying – for. Full of witty dialogue, pacy action and memorable characters (both above and below stairs), it blends suspense and period detail with a wry Janeite look at the world. The Life She Was Given – Ellen Marie Wiseman Lily knows she’s different. After all, her parents have kept her locked away for all of her nine years, in case she scares people. But then one day, in 1931, her mother drags her away from Blackwood Manor, and sells her to the circus. Fast forward to 1956 and Julia returns back to the home she ran away from. Two women, one house, 25 years apart; will the secret of Lily finally come to light? Well researched, with believable characters and a story that really 16

draws you in, this is a must for fans of historical fiction. Don’t Close Your Eyes – Holly Seddon Sarah is the good girl, the one her parents can always rely on to behave. Robin is the impetuous one, who can always be relied on to cause havoc. The twins are devastated when their parents’ divorce separates them. Now in her 30s, Robin lives alone, trapped in her home by crippling agoraphobia. Sarah has built what seems to be the perfect life, but aftfer being forced to leave it all behind, she goes in search of the only person she feels she can turn to – Robin. There’s just one person missing, their stepbrother Callum. The Good Daughter – Karin Slaughter Charlott t e and Samantha Quinn’s lives are changed forever when a violent crime destroys their family. 28 years later, Charlotte is working as a defence lawyer. She finds herself embroiled in a tragic event that leaves the town reeling, and the memories she’s tried so hard to bury come rushing back. Gripping. Health

Back to Back Back pain affects people in all age groups but is most prevalent in the over 50s. Health experts say that chronic back pain is increasing across the population due to our sedentary lifestyle both at work and during our leisure hours.

1. While sitting at your desk, put feet flat on the floor and hands on the edge of the desk. Push back, arching your spine into a convex shape, then reverse it into a concave position. 2. Stand about 30cm from a wall and place hands against the surface at shoulder height. Bend elbows to support upper body and, using abdominal strength, lift heels while keeping the back straight.

Around 4.2 million working days are lost to back pain by those in the 50-64 years age range. A strong, healthy, stable back requires regular exercise. The exercises should strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, and also the abdominal and oblique muscles that encircle the trunk like a corset. Those of us stuck at desks for most of our working day can try these exercises whenever we have a few minutes spare. Try 10-15 repetitions and hold each position for a count of 15.

3. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, about half a metre from a wall. Face the wall and lean against it using hands, the back should be straight. Reach up with right arm and simultaneously lift left leg backwards and upwards. Repeat on the opposite side. By Louise Addison

Midsomer Walks Tall in Thame Do you know the popular ITV series Midsomer Murders? Thame is one of the most used filming locations, featuring as Causton or as one of the many villages in ‘Midsomer County’.

You can see many of the filming locations during the Midsomer walking tours of Thame. Tony Long, tour coordinator, said, ‘These tours were first devised by David Dodds of Thame Museum. They’re held under the auspices of 21st Century Thame, following a successful Midsomer Workshop last year.’

It’s watched by 6.5 million people in the UK and millions more in over 100 countries. People see it on TV and want to visit Midsomer.

The tours last about an hour, taking place weekly between May and October, alternating between Saturdays at 2.30pm and Wednesdays at 11.00am. They start inside Thame Museum (79 High Street, OX9 3AE), a filming location. Bespoke tours are possible for groups of at least five (email thamemidsomertours@gmail.com for details).

Thame landmarks, including the Town Hall, Market House, Rumsey’s, the Swan, Black Horse, and Spread Eagle hotels have appeared in different episodes.

Tickets cost £7.50 each and may be purchased online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/thamemidsomer. Alternatively, turn up on the day.

Keep your granite worktop gleaming with our cleaning and caring tips. We’reanationofkitchenlovers, spending onaverage£7000redecoratingthem,and awhoppingthreeyearsofourlivesinthem. Withallthattimeandmoneyinvestedinone room, wewanteverypartofthemtolook lovelyforaslongaspossible, includingour graniteworktops. 1.Sealit – whilst granite is relatively non-porous

compared to its softer sister marble, it’s still important to seal granite to boost its stain resisting properties. Your kitchen fitter should ensure it’s correctly sealed before fitting; however it’s always worth double checking with them. Then reseal every 1-2 years to really spruce it up. We recommend Dry Treat’s Stain Proof Plus.

2.Avoidscouringpads –scouring pads may

scratch it and lift layers of sealer leaving your top

more vulnerable to staining. Instead use a soft dish cloth.

3.Avoidharshchemicals – similarly to scouring pads, abrasive chemicals can lift the sealer and erode the stone. Instead use dish soup or mild cleaning spray. 4.Buffit – granite can appear dull overtime. Lightly

buff your worktop once a week using a stone polish and soft cloth. Pledge have a multi-surface polish or we recommend Granite Clean and Sheen from Stone Equipment International.

Great Missenden and Angling Spring Wood

Thiswalkstartsinthe picturesquevillageofGreat Missenden, homeoftheRoald DahlMuseum.Thereisa gradualascenttoreachthe woodedhilltopstothewestof thevillagefromwherethereare fineviewsbackacrossthevalley oftheriverMisbourne. Distance: 2½ miles (allow 1½ hours) Start: Great Missenden Station Refreshments: There are several pubs and a tea room in the village. For access information and a printable map, go to www.chilternsaonb.org (Search for the Walk name) Route: From the front of the station turn left to Station Approach and walk downhill past shops to turn right into the High Street. Follow the High Street, past the Roald Dahl museum on your left until, having left the shops behind and almost opposite Missenden Abbey, you see a road on your right (Whitefield Lane) signposted ‘The Misbourne’. 1. Turn right through a small housing estate and, ignoring 34

side roads, go through the tunnel under the railway, and then past the junction with Trafford Road on your right. 2. Continue uphill along a lane, signposted as a bridleway, ignoring the footpath on your left. Look out for Gipsy House on your right, formerly the home of Roald Dahl.

After half a mile, at the top of the hill where the road ends, bear left to go past Angling Spring Farm. Soon the path curves right and shortly after enters woodland. At the second, at the point where the bridleway swings sharply left, go through a gate on your right. 3. Follow the path through the wood. When you emerge from the wood turn right at the path junction alongside the edge of the wood for a short distance, then turn left to follow the path alongside a hedge and through more kissing gates across fields, until you reach a road at Prestwood.

4. Turn right along this road for a short way, taking care as you follow the bend, until you reach a cross roads where you turn right to go down the drive to Andlows Farm, signposted Chiltern Heritage Trail. 5. Continue past the farm buildings on your right, and into Angling Spring Wood. At a junction of paths, 6. bear sharp right uphill, ignoring the path straight ahead of you. When you arrive at Angling Spring Farm go down the lane which takes you back into Great Missenden Village. The Great Missenden and Angling Spring Wood stile-free walk is one of a series produced by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can download this and an accompanying childrens’ quiz from www.chilternsaonb.org Autumn Chilterns Walking Festival from 16th September to 1st October. There is an exciting programme of 60+ walks and events. See www.visitchilterns.co.uk/ walkingfest for more information.

Travel

The Wonders Of India The recent ITV series featuring Joanna Lumley and her trip through India has been very topical, creating lots of interest. It offered a fascinating insight to this vast South Asia country, which boasts a population of more than 1.3 billion people and is 13 times the size of the UK. It has fast become a popular holiday destination as the British realise the appeal of holidaying there with the vast array of culture and history the country has to offer. The best time to travel is October – April for the destinations we have featured below. Keep in mind that vaccinations are usually required and to check for details with your GP. Places To Visit One of the most popular trips for first time visitors is “The Golden Triangle” - an introductory tour visiting Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. This brings together a visit to the capital city with its entire historic splendour, the fierce magnificence of Jaipur, the princely state capital which was painted pink (the traditional colour of welcome) and the amazing and breathtaking Taj Mahal in Agra. Fly direct from London to Delhi to start your journey, with prices starting from as little as £1,279 for 9 days. Agra - Visit the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Built between 1631 and 1648 on the bank of the Yamuna River, it is surrounded by beautiful Mughal gardens. Delhi - A extensive sightseeing tour of Delhi exploring its historic sights, including Raj Ghat,, Mahatma Gandhi’s Memorial, located on the banks of the River Yamuna. The Fort, a 17th century imposing fortress built in red sandstone and surrounded by a huge boundary waall 33m high, encloses exquisite palaces and beauttiful gardens.. T: 01844 217228 E: thame@speartravels.net www.speartravels.net 38

Opposite the Red Fort lies Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque, made of red sandstone and white marble completed in 1656. Explore the bustling cultural delight of the colourful market on a “cycle rickshaw” experiencing the sights and sounds of this very busy avenue. In the afternoon, discover New Delhi and visit Humayun’s Tomb, an impressive garden tomb with high arches and a double dome. Then continue on to the wonderfuul Qutab Minar, the landmark of Delhi, beforre driving on to Rajpath, through to India Gate and the Lutyes Delhi, leading to the British Viceroyy’s Palaace - now w the official residence of the Presiddent of India,, the Secretariat, India Gate and Parrliament House. Jaipur - The pink city andd the capital of Rajasthan known for its palaces, thhree hill forts and a shopper’s paradise. It is definitelyy worth paying a visiit to Amber – capital of the old sttate of Dhundhar annd located on the rugged hills surrounding Jaipur. Riide the elephants up the hill recalling the glory and wealth of Amber’s assocciation with the Mughaals. A visit to the City Palace is a must as well as Janntar Mantar (the Royal Obsservatory) and Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) built for the royal ladies to watch the activities of thee market street below. This iss an action-packed trip whhich will offer countless memories to take home with you. Once you have visited India you will mostt definitely want to return and experie ence the oth her amazing opportunities of th his co ountry, such h as the Tiger Trail, Culiinary Tourrs, River Cru uising and Bhutan n - all of which can be combined with a wonderfully relaxing beach stay. Local Events

Kop Hill Climb

16th and 17th SEPTEMBER 2017

The Kop Hill team of volunteers have been working hard to bring you a unique and amazing event in September, when the ninth revival of the early 1900’s motoring event takes place. The action is at Kop Hill in Princes Risborough, and all the fun, thrills and hard work contribute to raise funds for local charities and good causes on behalf of Heart of Bucks- the Community Foundation of Buckinghamshire. Last year exceeded all records, with over £100,000 being raised over the weekend, and 32 local projects supported. The event returns with a celebration of motoring through the ages, with over 400 historic cars and motorcycles each day taking on the famous hill. Many more will be on display in the Paddock. Vehicles range in age from the early 1900’s to modern day exotics, so there will be something for everyone.

60

painter, along with the Racing Bug track racing game will give younger visitors a day to remember. The Soapbox Challenge is a nail-biting competition, with teams of budding racers aged 10 to 17 trying to go the greatest distance down the purpose built ramp, chicane and obstacles to try and win the Beaumont Cup. With so many things to see and do a break for some food and drink will definitely be in order. So, relax in the food court while taking in the sounds of the stage with a fantastic line up this year, including G-Elvis, Rob Oakley - swinging like Frank Sinatra, and The James Manders Trio featuring the amazing performance of 8 year old Jack Manders on the drums. Soundforce Big Band will make a return, and setting the atmosphere in the paddock will be the roving Melody Jaz a z Band. Then why not browse the many exhibitors and indulge in a spot of retail therapy.

This is not just a static display, but also a recreation of Kop Hill’s glorious past. Both days will have morning and afternoon sessions where you can see the cars and motorcycles storming the hill. Moving history right before your eyes, especially from one of the Grandstands, which gives a unique vantage point.

For full event details or if you would like to volunteer your time to help over the weekend please go to ww w w.kophillclimb.org.uk

Technology Spotlight It is an exciting time for hearing technology, as developments in recent years have made devices smaller, shinier and more capable than ever before. At Aston Hearing, we are proud to fit the very latest products and help our clients to make the most of their hearing. Virto B-Titanium, the latest product from Phonak, offers advanced technology in a tiny device. The Titanium is comfortable, durable, and thinner than traditional materials, allowing the aid to be made to the smallest-ever specification by Phonak. The device is custom-made and sits completely inside your ear canal, making it a comfortable and discreet option. Duncan Collet-Fenson, Managing Director of Aston Hearing and European Audiologist of the Year 2016, has had several successful fittings with the Titanium.

We offer excellent service and aftercare and can support you throughout the life of your hearing device. If you would like to see what Titanium can do for you, please call 01494 733840, or email hear@astonhearing.co.uk.

‘I have been really impressed with the Phonak Titanium so far. It’s remarkable how well the device performs considering how small it is. All the devices I have fitted have been comfortable and discreet in the clients’ ears, and I’m particularly pleased with how they perform in noisy and harsh listening environments – always our biggest challenge. I’m looking forward to fitting more clients with Titanium and seeing how the technology can really benefit their lives’. - Duncan Collet-Fenson

Digestive Issues

Having problems with your digestive system can cause a lot of unpleasant symptoms, including constipation, nausea, diarrhoea, acid reflux, abdominal cramping, bloating, gas, hiatus hernia, fatigue, sleep disturbances & gallbladder troubles.

Over the counter & prescription mediccations can help relieve thhe symptoms, but as soo on as the medication wears off, so does the reelief. Instead of just maskingg the problem, it’s beetter to find the cause of thhe problem & work tow wards correcting it. Offten, there is compressionn, addhesion orr strain on the ligaments & supportivee conneective tissue around the organs. This can cause discomffort & digestive symptoms. Injuriees & falls, particularlyy after a fall on the buttockss can cause tension on the ligaments arouundd the kidneys, often the cause of unresolved lo ow back pain. Osteopathy can help you relieve tensions caused by movement restrictions of the organs with the use of visceral manipulation. Patients have also found osteopathy helpful for conditions of digestive issue.

72

Visceral manipulation is an Osteopathic hands-on technique, that involves appropriate treatment, of the ligaments & connective tissue which support the organs. Careful treatment is able to restore mobility, position & comfort to the organs, promote optimal circulation & balance the internal pressure systems in the body. You can have the healthiest diet in the world, but if your body & digestive system is not functioning at its optimal level, you may have restrictive tensions in your digestive system which may be assessed & treated. DIGESTIVE ISSUES After taking a full medical history & performing a hands-on assessment, David will create a treatment plan, that will put your body on the road to recovery.

Gardening

Winter Fragrance So, another gardening season draws to a close - as usual, some successes, some failures. Our runner beans were a triumph, the cosmos flowered and flowered, but the tomatoes were a disaster and the cherries were all eaten by the birds. But, we’ll all be ready to do it again next Spring, and next year we’ll get everything right ...... Once the nights begin to draw in and Jack Frost starts to nip at your fingertips, most gardeners start the winter wind down, put the tools away and hunker down for the cold wet months ahead. But there is no need to completely abandon the garden. A little bit of forward planning this Autumn and you can create a really lovely scented area, where, when the weather is with you, you’ll be able to sit and walk amongst hardy fragrant plants. One of my favourites for some off-season scent is Viburnum Bodnantense, this is a tall deciduous shrub that carries beautiful rose-coloured flowers on the bare stems. The varieties to look for are ‘Dawn’ and ‘Charles Lamont’. The flowers appear in late October and will keep blooming well into next Spring. Like all Viburnums, this variety is tough and no-nonsense, and grows well in our alkaline soil. The dark green/ bronze tinted leaves appear in early Spring - this really is a great shrub for Winter fragrance. Sarcococca (Christmas Box) should be a definite addition to your Winter garden. With evergreen, glossy pointed leaves, this family produces beautiful cream/white flowers that emit a rich, sweet scent. There are a number of varieties, all are recommended to perform well in the cold, wet months. The Skimmia family really are a ‘must have’ addition. One slight problem with them is, left

76

to their own devices, the rich green foliage can begin to look a little pale after a few months in our chalky soil. However, this is easily remedied by feeding with a liquid ericaceous fertiliser. Skimmia are not anti- alkaline, but they do need a little acid balance to keep that healthy dark green look. Skimmia will give you a blast of red berries in early Winter, then fragrant clusters of creamy white flowers. This family will happily grow in shade. And don’t forget the Spring flowering bulbs many are fragrant, particularly Tulips, Narcissi, Hyacinth and Muscari. These should be planted between September and the end of the year. This is the time to change the bedding scheme in your garden. The Summer geraniums, begonias etc have had a long season, and will begin to look tired. So, as the frost finishes them off, replace them with Winter pansies, Violas and Primoses. Happy gardening, see you soon,

Simon, Alison,Edith theJack Russell andall at AskettNurseries.

Pet Health

Grass seed season Dogs with injuries caused by grass seed penetration are a common finding at this time of year. Most at risk are hairy dogs , like spaniels, that are walked in meadows orr woodland where thee Foxtail graasss is found, althhough wheat annd barlley fields also posse a risk. The small spikelets that break off the foxtail are barbed and designed to stick to fur in order to spread the seed. When the tough, needle-sharp end penetrates the skin the barbs guide the seed in one direction

only- inwards. Sites commonly affected are between the toes, inside the ear, under the front legs in the “armpits”, and even into the conjunctiva of the eye. They can also be inhaled into the lungs. The seeds, being of vegetable matter do not show up on x ray and so are very difficult to find. You might notice that your dog suddenly becomes lame with a large swellling between the toes. Often a point of entry can be identified andd also a swelling furthher up the foot with a tract or sinus conneccting. If in the earr they causee acute pain, whichh ofteen sho ows as persistent heaad shaking. If in the lungs, dogss cann become very ill.

Your vet is the best person to advise and treat. If left, these seeds can penetrate deeper and cause many problems. Seek help if you see your dog showing any signs of sudden discomfort or lameness. Dr Mandy Elgin BVMS MRCVS

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello! My name is Molly. I’m about a year old and of mixed breed. Molly arrived in the care of SDR last July when a litter of puppies had been found abandoned in a crate. Molly was re-homed, but sadly returned to us in January as she suffers from Separation Anxiety. The staff have been working with Molly since beingg returned as she would ‘alarm’ bark at peeople she didn’t know and was quite reactive around other dogs, due to fear. Mollly has made a massive improvement and we feel she is at the point where she can start her search for a new home. New owners will need to be prepared to put in the time andd be committed to Mollyy ’s ongoing traainning. She is a very intelligentt young girrl and would benefit from undertakking scentt work training. Calmer exercise is also o a beneefit to her as due to her nervous siide, shhe can’t cope

82

with too mucch adrenaline running through her system and it takes a while for ‘come back down’ andd settle; this is why we feel scent work would be a very good and appropriate outlet for Mollyy. She will need someone who can be aro ound for the majority of the time due to her seeparaation anxietty; owners will need to help Molly ovverco ome her separation anxiety and help and addvice can and will be provided by our behaviourist. With time and patience, this beautiful girl has huge potential. www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk 01494 482695

Pet Health

Firework Season

Dr. Kathryn Miller MRCVS Firework season is approaching, and for many pets this can be a very stressful time. So, this month’s article focusses on our top tips for minimising the stress of fireworks/ thunderstorms for your companions. • Make a saffe hiding place for your pet – many pets feel safer if they have a comfortablee little den to hide away inn. Cats often like to be up hiigh, so a secure denn on a top shelf can be veery useful. • Try to walk your dog beefore it goes dark to minimise the risk of beeing outside when the fireworks start. • Play the raadio/television quietly in the background to helpp muffle the bangs of fireworks/thunder. • Keep the curtains closed to reduce the flashes thhatt your pet sees. A ‘desensitization’ programme can be very useful in animals IF STARTED BEFORE firework/thunder season gets under way. This involves playing a CD

CROSSROADS

of ‘scary noises’ very quietly in the background whilst your pet is eating/playing/happy. This can then gradually be increased in volume to get your pet ready for ‘the real thing’. Your vet can direct you towards the relevant CD. In some animals, their level of fear is such that medications will be required in addition to the above. Therapeutic intervention can involve pheromones, mood enhancers and mild sedatives. Book an appointment with your vet sooner rather than later to discuss which therapy would be most appropriate for your pet, as some of these therapies take a few weeks to start working.
