Welcome to the September/October issue of Chiltern View Magazine. We are pleased to include our usual exciting selection of competitions for the Autumn at our local theatres and in this issue we are offering even more chances to win tickets to some fantastic events, including Thame Food Festival (P 54) and Waddesdon Manor’s Halloween half term week (P85). Don’t forget the exciting Kop Hill Climb (P86) which is definitely one for your diaries and in addition, for those of you who are more sensitive to the food you eat, we have some great advice and recipes from our local expert nutritionist (P24).
We are also helping to promote the amazing Chilterns Walking Festival (P 32). This festival really does celebrate all things great in The Chilterns and the programme this year includes a guided tour around a miniature pig farm in Amersham and a walk uncovering Marlow’s history as a WW1 camp, in addition to an extensive selection of beautiful and interesting walks. For those of you who run local businesses, we continue to print and distribute 24000 of these great little magazines across the wonderful Chilterns. They are read, retained, trusted and used by local residents to source truly local businesses, why not contact us today and see how we can help your business to flourish (www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk). Until the next time

Book Review
Autumn Reads Sweatpants At Tiffanie’s Our guest author for September/October is Pernille from Buckinghamshire and this RomCom is her first novel. True Love Packs a Punch… Tiffanie Trent gets dumped by boyfriend Gavin on their 10th anniversary. Heartbroken and homeless, Tiff, a bookkeeper at an old-school boxing gym, figures at least she has her job. But then the owner drops dead, leaving her floundering. (He’s not having a good week either.) When she then inherits the gym, Tiff, not a sporty at all, needs to decide whether she can take it on, defy the naysayers who say she can’t do it, and bring the club and her life into a better state of play. Ebook: August 3rd Paperback; October 18th, HarperImpulse. The Salt Path – Raynor Winn Raynor and her husband Moth lost their farm just days after finding out that Moth was suffering from an incurable, life-limiting illness. With no money and nowhere to live, the couple made the decision to walk the South West Coast Path – 630 miles through Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. The Salt Path is the true story of that walk – the challenges Raynor and Moth faced, the people they met and the things they learnt along the way.

Once – Morris Gleitzman Morris Gleitzman’s series follows a Jewish boy called Felix in Poland during the Second World War. Felix runs away from an orphanage in search of his parents, who disappeared several years before. Along the way, he befriends a girl called Zelda, and receives help from various people he meets. As you’d expect, the story is harrowing at times, but it’s also funny, uplifting and impossible to put down. This one will stay with you for a very long time. The Dark Between Stars: Poems – Atticus Atticus has become something of a social media sensation over the last couple of years. His latest book, The Dark Between Stars, is out this month. The poems cover themes such as living with purpose, loneliness, and the highs and lows of a life well-lived. Each poem is just a few lines long (some are a single line) and many of them are illustrated or accompanied by a photograph. Several of Atticus’s poems are also available at www.instagram.com/atticuspoetry. Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found – Cheryl Strayed Wild became an international bestseller back in 2013, and was made into a film adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon. If you missed both, add the book to your wish list today. After losing her mother at 22, Cheryl fell into a downward spiral that saw her cheating on her husband and taking hard drugs. She ended up packing a backpack and setting off on a 1,100 mile hike from Mexico to Canada. Along the way she both found her way ‘back to the person I used to be’ and discovered the adult she wanted to become. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Advice
Expert Food Advice
It is important to replace the foods you have cut out with alternatives so that your diet meets your nutritional needs; this is especially important for infants and children.
Are you suffering after eating? Well help is at hand locally, if you feel you may have a food allergy or intolerance.
There are lots of replacement foods available including dairy free yogurts and milks, gluten free breads and cakes, and egg free mayonnaise, so you don’t have to miss out.
Many people suffer with unpleasant symptoms after eating.
It is easy to adapt family recipes so that everyone can eat the same and you don’t spend ages in the kitchen or feel left out.
Sometimes the cause is obvious and the food is avoided, but sometimes it can be tricky to work out which food or foods are a problem, especially when there is a delay between eating and the symptoms developing. Symptoms may include eczema, skin rashes, acid reflux, vomiting, tummy aches, wind, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and many other unpleasant effects. The most effective way to identify which foods might be causing a problem is to: 1. Keep a food and symptom diary 2. Cut out the suspect foods for 1-2 weeks 3. Reintroduce the foods 1 by 1 (never do this without medical advice if you have had a severe reaction to a food)
The following recipe taken from Tanya’s latest book* is free from wheat, gluten, milk, lactose, egg, soya, nuts and seeds…. Tanya Wright BSc Msc Allergy Specialist Registered Dietitian DT4990 11th July 2018 Tanya Wright is a HCPC registered Dietitian specialising in the diagnosis and management of food allergy and other food hypersensitivity reactions in children and adults with gastrointestinal, dermatological and respiratory symptoms. She works predominately in the NHS but also runs a private dietetic service locally and in Harley Street London. She is a longstanding committee member of all the professional and patient support associations and author of several allergy cookbooks.
Managing a restricted diet Once you have worked out which food / foods have been upsetting you, you can then work on managing your diet.

Health
The Healing Power of Touch In the words of Harvard Researcher and M. D. Andrew Weil, “Manipulation seems to me a good technique to know, because it may improve the circulation of blood and nervous energy to ailing parts of the body.” Osteopaths are trained extensively in the treatment of body structure in order to assist the body in releasing its own unique healing capabilities. However, hands-on healing therapies date back to early Hebrew, Egyptian, and Oriental practices. The ancient Mayans and Incas of South America also utilised methods of joint manipulation. In the 16th Century Ambroise Pare, a brilliant French surgeon, began to employ massage techniques for joint stiffness and wound healing after surgery. In 1911 English orthopaedist, Sir Robert Jones, summarised the mechanical benefits of manipulation as, “assisting in the venous return of blood to the heart, aiding lymph movement out of tissues, stretching the connective tissues, and stimulating the internal organs.”
26
Clinical and experimental evidence indicate that connective tissue can be altered through deep tactile pressure and stretching. This has several practical applications: 1. Treating muscular “contractures” following long periods of immobility. 2. Increasing the range of motion in joints after muscle strain or joint strain. 3. Breaking down of scar tissue caused by trauma (e.g. Injury or surgery). Hence, manual medicine can be used not only to treat disease but also to invoke health. In summary, the human body is a unique and complex organism which not only seems to respond to “The Healing Power of Touch,” but also seems to need it in order to thrive.

Chilterns Walking Festival
© Dr Jim Conboy
Fast becoming a staple of the event calendar, The Chilterns Walking Festival Autumn event takes place from Saturday 06 – Sunday 21 October. Organised by The Chilterns Conservation Board, the popular festival involves a programme of over 50 guided walks and activities at locations across the whole Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) stretching from Oxfordshire through Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
• Take the train for a walk – a day long linear walk between High Wycombe and Princes Risborough • Trains and Towpaths - A linear walk from Aylesbury to Wendover • Discovering Tring reservoirs – four reservoirs feeding the Grand Union Canal and a haven for wildfowl and fishing claims to fame • The Marlow trenches – a walk uncovering Marlow’s history as a WW1 camp • J.H Kennard walks – discover the distinctive Arts and Crafts style of the little known though hugely influential architect around Amersham Each walk is guided by an experienced leader who knows the area well and is keen to share stories of the people and places that have shaped the countryside.
© Dr Jim Conboy
There are specialist themed walks, and opportunities to discover lively stories, sample a local tipple and enjoy the scenic landscapes associated with the Chilterns. Some walks include ‘have-a-go’ sessions or chances to learn about the area’s wildlife, history and colourful characters, all led by enthusiastic volunteer walk leaders. Highlights from the Autumn programme include: • Go Batty - a bat spotting walk around the beautiful Box Moor Trust near Hemel Hempstead • Iron-age defences - a series of walks exploring ancient historic hillforts across the Chilterns • These little piggies - a guided trail around a miniature pig farm in Amersham 32
Chilterns Conservation Board People and Society Officer Annette Venters said “The Chilterns is a landscape with much more than beautiful views. The programme reflects this with walk leaders sharing their passion for history, local legends and wildlife, alongside opportunities to visit modern day operators from micro pig farms to breweries. There is a vast amount to explore and we want to encourage more people to do exactly that”. Details of all guided walks and activities available in the autumn programme can be found from the end August on the website www.visitchilterns.co.uk/walkingfest. Most are free of charge; some require a small fee which is clearly shown. To assist walk leaders with expected numbers, all walk places must be prebooked via the website. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Pet Health
Firework Phobias Dr. Kathryn Miller BVSc CertAVP PgCertVPS MRCVS
Firework season is on the way, which for many pets (and owners) can be an incredibly stressful time of year. The unpredictable loud bangs and flashes can cause fear and phobic behaviour that can be extremely hard to deal with. Is my pet scared of fireworks? Running away, hiding, shaking, crying and seeking comfort are all clear signs of fear. Other signs can be subtler though - watch out for lip licking, salivation, vomiting and reluctance to eat meals. Some animals will become destructive or toilet in the house. How can I help my pet? • Provide somewhere to hide Create a den by covering your dog’s crate, make a comfy fort behind the sofa, or even furnish an upturned box for cats and smaller dogs. Remember, cats often feel safe up high, so placing the den on a bookshelf or counter can be useful. • Keep your pets in Ensure dogs are walked before dark and bring cats in overnight. Ideally, lock the cat flap to stop them bolting outside if panicked. Consider having your cat microchipped, so that if she does bolt and get lost/injured she can be reunited with you more easily. • Provide distractions Background music/TV on a low setting can really help distract from the noise of the fireworks.
34
Can I desensitise my animal? Desensitisation programmes can be extremely effective, but an animal must be in a non-fearful state initially, so they are best started before firework season begins. Playing a firework noise CD; starting on a low level and increasing the level gradually whilst rewarding calm behaviour, can help build a tolerance. Call our nurses for further advice on such programmes. Can medications help? Whilst sedatives can make an animal more manageable, they are not ideal as they will not always reduce the level of fear that an animal is feeling, rather they just stop them being able to display that fear. These should only be reserved for absolute emergency situations. Another preferable alternative is a calming product that helps your animal process the stressful event in a less stressful manner, without sedating, thus helping deal with the underlying phobia. This can be very effective alongside a desensitisation programme. These products come as collars, sprays and tablets, all of which are best started before the fireworks to achieve maximum effect. For more advice, call 01494 459095 to speak with our vets and nurses.

Gardening
Summer Gardening Well, what a hot, hot summer we had and the proof of all that scorching arid weather, is your tired, parched lawn. If well maintained, your grass will, after some much-needed rain and cooler temperatures, green up again but if you tend to leave your lawn to fend for itself, some maintenance is probably needed. In extended periods of drought, your lawn becomes weak and the roots suffer and deteriorate. September/October is the ideal time to address these problems, get your grass back to full fitness, and prepare it for the forthcoming winter months. Due to the very hot weather this summer, your lawn more than probably just stopped growing. The lack of water will have prevented any new growth emerging and left you looking out at a brown, parched space. Once the rain does fall, your grass will start to recover, but do not get tempted to cut it too short. During the autumn raise the cutting height on your mower to allow the new growth to establish and become stronger. To rid your lawn of the ‘thatch’, the debris of dead grass and moss, now is the time to scarify. If you have a small area this is achievable with a lawn rake, for a bigger space a Lawn Scarifier is the tool for you. If you foresee yourself taking
36
on this task every year, perhaps you can buy one or if you want to just blitz the grass, it is easy to hire one for a day. Now is the time to treat your lawn with an autumn weed & feed product. At this time of year, you need a high mix of potash & phosphates which will help protect your grass from the cold frosty weather which is on the way. Hopefully, come the spring, your lawn will have recovered from the battering it received this summer and will be back to its green, lush self. Happy Gardening, See you soon,

Avoid Tech Horrors This Halloween What to do with a watery phone and how to protect your photos… Not everything that goes bump in the night is a ghost or a ghoul. Sometimes it’s a crucial bit of kit getting damaged. Unfortunately no piece of technology lasts forever, any device can be stolen or damaged and any digital file can be deleted or corrupted. If it contains something that really matters to you – your priceless family photos or home videos, perhaps, or your university dissertation, or the book that’s going to make you a superstar – then any problems could be catastrophic. So how do you prevent problems from becoming Halloween horrors? The first thing to do is to ensure that you have more than one copy of anything important. For example, if you store all your photos on your phone you should make sure you have copies of all of them on your PC too: if your phone was to be stolen and you didn’t have backups of your photos, they’d be gone forever. You can also use online services such as Apple’s iCloud or Google Photos to store your snaps on Apple or Google’s computers. Other services from the likes of Flickr and DropBox can do the same. That means if you lose your phone or PC, you can still download the photos to a different phone or PC later. Those services aren’t just limited to photos, either. You can use them to store and share documents of any kind. A really good way to have backups is to get an external hard disk. If you have a recent 52
PC or Mac you have USB 3.0 ports, which are much faster than the USB 2.0 ports in older computers. That means you can take advantage of superspeedy USB 3.0 drives. You don’t need to spend much to get a good one: for example, Toshiba’s Canvio Basics is currently £44.99 for 1TB of space, more than enough for even the biggest photo library. Even a massive drive such as the 4TB WD My Passport is less than £100. There are other ways to copy files, such as USB sticks and DVD discs (if your computer has a DVD burner), but we wouldn’t recommend them. USB sticks aren’t really made to last and they’re easy to lose, while DVD discs take ages to burn, don’t have much storage capacity and aren’t particularly well-suited to long term storage. So far we’ve talked about prevention. What about cure? One of the most common computer, tablet or phone disasters is a liquid spill. If that happens to you, turn the device off immediately and if it’s a laptop, turn it upside down so the keyboard is facing down. Whatever you do, don’t turn it back on until you’re sure it’s completely dry inside. If it isn’t, you could cause a short-circuit that’ll ruin the computer. Have you heard the one about putting a phone in a sealed bag of rice? That works, because the rice draws out the moisture – but it takes at least two days to work. As with laptops, keep the phone off until it’s completely dry.

Risborough Area Community Bus provides daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services for all members of the community in and around Princes Risborough and outlying villages. Nearly 2000 passenger use our bus each month. We make the bus available by non-profit making groups when not on scheduled services and we also run outings each month to places of interest. Our 30 trained, volunteer drivers and our Coordinator work tirelessly to fund and run the service. Drop off for passengers is in the High Street where passengers can connect to buses running to Aylesbury, Thame and High Wycombe. Our passengers love our service. Said one recently “Thank you for the help you give me, without it I would not get out as I do.” And a group which hired the bus last year said “Many thanks for arranging our outing to College Lake Nature Reserve last Wednesday which happened to be the hottest day of the year so far! We all enjoyed the visit despite the heat and your lady driver was excellent. We look forward to using the Community Bus again.” Anyone can use our bus, young and old alike. The fare for most journeys is only £1.50 and most concessionary cards are accepted. Children aged 16 and under travel free.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello my name is Valteri, I am about 2 years old and a Whippet Mix I arrived at Stokenchurch Dog Rescue care via a pound they work closely with, and without the help of Stokenchurch Dog Rescue, my future may not have been as bright... I do have flea allergies, which were previously left causing quite me lot of fur loss on my back end but with the treatment I received to prevent this from happening again, look at me now! I like other dogs and love to play so if I was to live with another dog, SDR would need to ensure that my playstyle suits the other dog. I am hugely motivated by treats and eager to earn them, so I would love to do some training and if you have a reward, I am on your side already! I will require a good-sized garden to 72
zoom around off lead in as I like to burn off excess energy. I am a very clever boy who as well as zooming, enjoys mental stimulation. especially playing the ‘find it’ game with treats and food! Recipe
Ham, Roasted Pepper and Feta Cheese Flan with Tomato Using a ready-rolled sheet of puff pastry makes this summer flan a doddle to make. Serve warm or cold with a peppery watercress and rocket salad and some boiled new potatoes for a lovely late summer lunch or supper. Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes
Ingredients: • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and thickly sliced • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 2 tbsp olive oil • 320g packet readyrolled puff pastry sheet • 2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, plus extra to garnish • 75g feta cheese, crumbled • 6 slices Parma ham • Freshly ground black pepper • Beaten egg, to glaze
1.
Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Place the peppers and garlic in a shallow roasting tin and drizzle over half the olive oil. Roast in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just tender.
2.
Unroll the pastry sheet onto a large baking sheet lined with baking paper. Arrange the tomatoes over the pastry, leaving a 2cm 74
border, and scatter over the thyme leaves. Top with the crumbled feta and ruffles of Parma ham. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil.
3.
Gently fold in the pastry edges a little to give a raised border. Brush the pastry border with beaten egg.
4.
Bake the flan for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden and the peppers are lightly charred in places. Serve warm or cold garnished with the extra thyme leaves.
TIPS • You can use any other variety of continental ham for this flan, or try thin slices of salami or pastrami instead. • Remove the packet of pastry from the fridge about 20 minutes before unrolling to allow it to soften a little. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Crendon Chamber Orchestra 21 years of music making CCO evolved over a number of years mainly through the involvement and enthusiasm of Angela and Eric Orgill. The orchestra began its life as a small baroque group in 1980 and became a fully-fledged string orchestra in 1997 with an average complement of 20 to 25 players drawn from Bucks, Oxon and Berks. The orchestra offers a unique opportunity to play and hear some of the great works in the string orchestra repertoire from 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. English music has always featured strongly in concerts through works by Purcell, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Holst, Tippett, Tavener and Walton. The orchestra has benefitted from a rich variety of musical directors, initially with Tony Freeth who was actively involved with music education and development in the Aylesbury area. Then Dr Jonathan Williams became principal conductor and worked with the orchestra for 8 years. Since 76
then the policy has been to invite a variety of leading conductors/directors including John Lubbock, Paul Barritt, David Le Page, Roger Coull, Robert Salter and Simon Walton. We are delighted to welcome back Simon Walton for this special concert which includes wonderful music by Elgar, Britten, Vaughan Williams, Tippett and Debussy. This time we have an opportunity to hear music written for harp and strings with Claire Hayes as soloist. Details: October 13th St Mary’s Church, Thame Tickets: Adults £13.50, Students £5, under 14 free. On the door or from Foregolf, Buttermarket Thame. Let’s talk about autism When we received the review below from local resident, Eddy Smythe, we really felt that we wanted to share it with our readers. Eddy has captured the essence of the book beautifully and, coincidentally, the National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour is being held in shops across the country throughout the week from 6th to 13th October, it was a timely addition. Post offices, supermarkets, coffee shops and high street retailers have already pledged to support the campaign by taking simple steps to help create a more autism-friendly world. This means things like turning down music, dimming bright lights, and sharing information about autism. More than 5,000 shops and businesses took part in last year’s inaugural Autism Hour and the National Autistic Society wants this year to be even bigger. To find out how you can get involved, visit www.autism.org.uk Jonas has worked with children and adults on the autism spectrum for over 35 years. He lectures nationally and internationally in the subjects of movement therapy, challenging behaviour and Autism. He is a guest lecturer at various universities and national conferences and mentors arts therapy, psychology, teaching and nursing students. He lives and works in Oxford and the Thame & Chinnor area and has two grown up children. He is
78
also a passionate gardener and musician. Feeling that this was a ‘specialist’ book on a subject that I probably know as much about as the average person, I started reading, expecting it could be hard going. Nothing could be further from the truth. From the opening page I was completely absorbed. Each chapter relates to a child and the author takes you through the journey he has had with that child. They are all very different and provide a range of challenges, some more difficult than others but the approach is one of incredible patience and understanding, coupled with tremendous imagination. A variety of techniques are used including yoga, meditation, martial arts, music and drawing. I found myself living in the particular child’s world during their chapter, seeing the two-way learning process slowly unfold, and the incredible interaction taking place. The author’s style of writing is non-technical and he has a way of taking you in and keeping you transfixed. If you have the slightest interest in the subject of autism, this is the book for you. If you don’t have the slightest interest in this subject, this is also the book for you!

Your Hearing
A Very Valuable Commodity
It is essential for everyone to take care of their ears and hearing as damage to the auditory system could be irreparable. However, if you have hearing loss it is especially important to preserve and protect your remaining hearing as communicating freely with others is vital. As hearing loss generally occurs gradually, many people don’t notice the subtle decline until friends or family members point it out. Our brains are very good at filling in the gaps through a combination of lip reading and knowing the context of the conversation, hence hearing loss often goes unnoticed. Hearing is delicate and susceptible to damage, even from everyday activities and environments. In this article we would like to highlight some risk areas which are not necessarily obvious when considering hearing protection, and to share some helpful tips to minimise damage wherever possible. Whatever level of hearing you have it is crucial to do everything you can to preserve it. Here are some top tips: • Don’t stand too close to loudspeakers, especially in an environment where you have no control over the volume. • Become familiar with the decibel levels of common everyday activities such as mowing the lawn or blow-drying your hair.
• Acoustically optimise your house to absorb sound - consider soft furnishings, carpets and curtains, particularly in kitchen areas where noise levels can soon become high and make listening environments a challenge. • Be aware of car noise and how this affects how loud you set your car stereo. Spend some time setting the balance of your speakers to allow you to get the best listening environment. • DIY – if you are taking on a DIY project be aware of the noise levels of power tools such as drills, hammers, circular saws etc. Consider noise protection • Certain large events can be noisy and push the boundaries of safe listening levels. These include airshows, firework displays, music events and football matches. Consider noise protection. • Be vigilant of any change in your hearing or existing tinnitus symptoms and ask your audiologist for advice if you have any concerns. Kop Hill Climb Festival 15th and 16th September 2018 The Kop Hill Climb Festival is back for the Big Tenth – yes, unbelievably, the event that has something for everyone in the family celebrates its tenth year this year. The action is at Kop Hill in Princes Risborough, and all the fun, thrills and hard work contribute to raise funds for local charities and good causes on behalf of Heart of Bucks- the Community Foundation of Buckinghamshire – well over £500,000 to date! So what can you expect from this year’s Festival? Well if its cars and bikes, then the hill will be packed with both, with commemorative runs celebrating motoring through the ages from the early 1900’s to modern day exotics. Returning to storm the hill is the Brooklands record breaking Napier Railton. Why not buy a Grandstand ticket and see all the action.
In the Paddock you can get up close to the vehicles and drivers, visit the fun fair and ride the Ferris wheel, check out the Soapbox competition with new, exciting additions to the track, or how about finding out more about that treasured family heirloom? Eric Knowles and his team from the BBC Antiques Roadshow will give free valuations of any item that can be fitted into a carrier bag or an image on your tablet or phone. 86

Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially “Just a very big thank you for producing great for a small business such as ours as we can meet magazines with excellent art-work. The response our customers regularly to collect documents and from this advertising has been brilliant. Keep the discuss their business face to face. Thank you good work up and continue with your cheerful and helpful back-up. Thumbs up to all. Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we John Evans, Thame Snooker Club” look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting
