Welcome to the September / October issue of Chiltern View Magazine. It’s hard to believe this will be our Autumn issue. The summer is coming to an end and schools will be starting a new term, but there is so much to look forward to and we have lots of ideas to help you make the transition from long, bright evenings to cosy, darker nights. We have a total of 5 competitions this issue so make sure you send in those entries! September 21st and 22nd sees the very exciting Kop Hill Climb and this year they are celebrating their 10th anniversary. A fabulous event for all the
family; so make sure you read page 28 for your chance to win tickets. September 28th and 29th is the weekend to enjoy anything food and drink related and a lot more, with the arrival of the wonderful Thame Food Festival (see page 80 for your chance to win tickets to this too and see Mary Berry if you’re lucky!). We have our usual 3 different theatre competitions and Autumn is the time for a lot of the best shows. You can even book your tickets to see one of their fantastic pantomimes – Oh yes you can! Looking ahead for fun over the October half term, why not visit Waddesdon Manor who are hosting a variety of activities for the kids plus some very yummy afternoon teas with a spooky twist. It’s the time for Harvest, Halloween and also ‘Strictly’ – we can’t wait! Until next time,
Jan & Coralie

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue My name is Annie; I am a 16 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix. I would benefit from having owners who will be around for the majority of the day, whilst I settle into my new home, and who will work on making me feel safe in my new environment when building my home alone time. I am a very people orientated. I absolutely love going out for my walks, but I can be a little strong on the lead. I love my treats and I am eager to please my people, so with consistency and positive reward, I will quickly learn to walk nicely on the lead. I am an intelligent girl and I already know a few commands. I would love to be taught new commands or even some tricks, as it will be a great way for my new owners to bond with me, as well as provide me with some mental stimulation in the process.
8
I also enjoy playing fetch with my handlers and will occasionally join in a game of tug. I can be a little insecure around other dogs, so I am muzzle trained and I am happy to wear my muzzle when out on walks – every girl has their own accessories don’t they? I will make a very loving and active addition to a home with people who have breed experience. www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk Stokenchurch Dog Rescue: Giving dogs a second chance 01494 482695

Never considered fostering? Nor had Sam & Des, until they saw a billboard 10 years ago! Since then, this local couple have changed dozens of young lives and say it’s been a really positive journey … People always have a lot of praise for foster carers, saying what amazing work we do and how we make such a difference to young people but there are huge benefits to being a foster carer too. There’s nothing better than having a bigger family and, for us, it’s a chosen family. We’ve been fostering for almost 10 years now and it’s really enriched our lives. We’ve grown as people and we see things from a very different perspective. For example, before fostering, if we saw a naughty child in the supermarket, we’d think they were just acting up. Now we understand that there’s often a much deeper reason for difficult behaviour. With some of the kids we’ve looked after, we’ve seen that difficult behaviour when they first come to our home. Often it’s triggered by asking them to do something simple, like lay the table, and they can get upset. We’ve learnt, over time, that this is often because the child has simply never been taught to do these things. When you work with the kids to show them how it’s done, it can feel like a real breakthrough!
18
Lots of foster carers come from having worked with kids in some way. Not us! We had sold our business and wanted to do something to benefit the community. Then we saw a billboard in Slough about fostering and we’ve never looked back! We’ve had more than 30 children placed with us from between one week and eight years and currently look after three teenagers. Not everyone realises there is an urgent need for local foster carers – there are many vulnerable children who desperately need the support of a loving home not too far from everything they know and, believe us, we’ve seen how that environment can make a child. The alternative is that they may end up staying with a carer who lives hours away. As a foster carer with Slough Children’s Services Trust, there’s lots of support. We receive great training that’s been so valuable for some of the situations we come across. For us, fostering has become a real vocation, it’s our life, it’s made us who we are and we wouldn’t change a thing! To find out more about fostering please call 01753 690960 or email foster@scstrust.co.uk

Health
Community Health At the heart of osteopathic practice is our aim to promote an environment for health in those we care for. The concept of promoting health, as opposed to simply treating disease, has been gaining traction in the rest of healthcare and momentum is now building. Public Health England recognises the growing importance of health promotion in a community setting, and the potential contribution osteopaths can make through social prescribing. David suggests: “Sometimes called ‘community referral’, social prescribing relates to health care professionals providing and referring people to a range of local non-clinical services. Recognising that people’s health is determined by a range of social, physical, emotional and environmental factors, these schemes approach health improvement in a holistic way, helping people improve areas of their
26
lives likely to contribute to their entire health and wellbeing”. The growing burden of chronic disease is putting increasing strain on UK healthcare forcing services to think differently. This has resulted in increased understanding of the importance of keeping people healthy. Osteopaths are in a prime position to help with this growing trend towards optimising health in order to provide improved services to those in our community. Best wishes, David

Kop Hill Climb Festival 21st and 22nd September 2019 Come along to Kop Hill Climb Festival in Princes Risborough and be a part of a unique two day event, which this year is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of its revival. So, what can you expect from this year’s Festival? Well if its cars and bikes, then the hill will be packed with both, with commemorative runs celebrating motoring through the ages from the early 1900’s to modern day exotics. Returning to storm the hill is the Brooklands Napier Railton. Why not buy a Grandstand ticket and see all the action. In the Paddock you can get up close to the vehicles and drivers, visit the fun fair and ride the dodgems, check out the Soapbox competition and very special guest Fuzz Townsend from TV hit show Car SOS. How about finding out more about that treasured family heirloom? Eric Knowles and his team from the BBC Antiques Roadshow will give free valuations of any item that fits into a carrier bag or a digital image. Call in at the new Engineering Village showcasing local automotive craftsmen and meet biking legend Sammy Miller MBE. Come and help celebrate some special anniversaries – 60 years of the Mini with a cavalcade up Kop Hill led by legendary rally driver Paddy Hopkirk, the coach from the Italian Job, 110 years of Bugatti, the centenary of Talbot, 60 years of Marcos – an amazing variety of cars across the ages. 28
With so many things to see and do a break for some food and drink will definitely be in order. So, relax in the food court while taking in the sounds of the stage, with a fantastic line up. Then why not browse the many exhibitors and indulge in a spot of retail therapy – from art to clothing, memorabilia to food. Whether cars and bikes are your thing or not rest assured this year’s Kop Hill Climb Festival is a family affair.

Healthy Lunch Boxes With the new school year approaching - and memories of holidays fading fast, the focus is now on ‘back to school’. This is a good opportunity to rethink and establish a tasty and healthy nutritious lunchbox. Taking advantage of special offers in the supermarket can often result in less healthy options becoming part of the everyday lunchbox. With the right planning and ideas this can be easily managed. Include: • a starchy main e.g. a wholegrain wrap, pasta salad, sandwich, pitta or roll with chicken/meat & lettuce, cheese and tomato, humus, tuna & sweetcorn/avocado • Fruit e.g. grapes, cherries, banana, apple, satsuma • Salad/veggie e.g. carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, Mangetout • ‘Afters’ e.g. scone, fruit bun, rice cakes, brioche, oatcakes, jelly, popcorn, yogurt • A drink – water, milk, smoothie Tips • Use the lunch box as a way to educate your child to eat healthy nutritious food 32
• Don’t overfill the lunchbox – your child wants to play at lunchtime too! • Take a food flask with hot food during winter if allowed • Keep the lunchbox chilled to keep it fresh • Remind your child to wash their hands before and after eating • Check if school has a ‘nut free policy’ • Remind your child to never walk around eating (choking risk) Beware of high sugar and high fat foods More information https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes/healthierlunchboxes https://www.bda.uk.com/foodfacts/healthy_packed_ lunches Tanya Wright HCPC Registered Specialist Dietitian www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

CHILTERN VIEW MAGAZINE
What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

Recipe
Pumpkin Soup This a lovely warming soup recipe, to make when culinary pumpkins are in season in October and November. If you like spices, add a couple of teaspoons of cumin to the recipe. Serve it in bowls, or scoop out a large pumpkin and use the pumpkin as a serving bowl. If you can get hold of small pumpkins, you could slice the top off, scoop out the seeds and serve the soup in individual squash. Ingredients for 4 – 6 people Half a culinary pumpkin (500g) 1 tbsp olive oil Half a red onion, chopped 1 carrot, chopped Knob of butter 400 ml vegetable stock 100ml milk Freshy grated nutmeg A little salt and freshly ground pepper
46
1. Preheat the oven to 180c/gas 4 (AGA roasting oven – shelf on oven floor). 2. Cut the pumpkin in half and remove the seeds using a dessert spoon. Cut each half into 4 again and brush with half the olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and put, flesh side down, into the roasting tin. Roast the pumpkin slices for 25 minutes. 3. Melt the butter in a large saucepan, add the chopped onion and carrots, cook over a gentle heat until soft and the onion is translucent (this should take around 20 minutes). 4. Remove the pumpkin from the oven and set aside to cool. 5. Add the stock and milk to the vegetables and gently bring to a simmer 6. Using a round bladed knife, remove the pumpkin flesh from the skin and cut into chunks, discarding the skin. Add to the saucepan, bring back to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes.. 7. Transfer the soup to a liquidiser and puree until smooth, or use a stick blender. Taste, and if it needs it, add a little more salt / pepper. Spoon into warmed soup bowls and serve with a chunk of bread. © Beverley Glock 2019

Glimpsing Ancient Lives How did our ancestors live, thousands of years ago? It seems an impossible question to answer. And yet, here in the Chilterns, we have some tantalising hints, in the form of hillforts. The origins of hillforts lie in the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age, between about 1000BC and the Roman conquest of Britain in the 1st century AD. Typically their features include earthwork ramparts and ditches. Some are located on open grassland and others in areas which, now at least, are covered in woodland and scrub. Remnants and artefacts retrieved from some suggest that people lived and were buried in them, stored produce or livestock there and performed rituals and ceremonies. It’s also possible that a line of hillforts marked a boundary between two tribal areas. There are over 20 known hillforts or their remains in the region. One of my favourites is Pulpit Hill, a healthy if occasionally steep walk up from the Plough at Cadsden (itself a relative newcomer in comparison, dating back merely to the 14th century). You go carefully along a short, narrow strip of road, crossing it to go through a gate and continuing uphill along the path through Grangelands Nature Reserve. Pulpit Hill is ‘multivallate’ – it has several lines of closely set earthworks. Its defensive position is obvious; there are excellent views to the vale of Aylesbury, and steep slopes on all but the south-eastern side. However, it probably wasn’t used mainly as a fort; the National Trust suggest it was a centre for storing agricultural produce or to enclose animals from farms in the district, as protection from cattle raids.
56
Cholesbury Camp
Talking of cattle, be prepared for the stares of the cows near the entrance to Cholesbury Camp, just north of Chesham. Though not on a hill, this oval site still qualifies as a hillfort! You can follow the outer line via a circular arrangement of splendid beech trees. The ponds in the open central area suggest that the reliable source of water was a major reason for this choice of location for a hillfort. Excavations in the 1930s found seven hearths, with evidence of iron smelting, and the remains of a clay-lined oven. The most unusual aspect of this hillfort is its church; St Laurence’s is 13th-century in origin and was restored in Victorian times after falling into disuse. Neil Matthews is the co-author, with his wife Helen, of Slow Travel: The Chilterns and the Thames Valley, a new guidebook available to buy online (bradtguides.com) or in local bookshops.

Gardening
Askett Nurseries So, another summer gardening season draws to a close, and we now have the opportunity to prepare our gardens for the forthcoming winter. With the first frosts on the horizon, this is the time to clear your beds of tender annuals. Your bedding plants may well still be in flower, but if you want colour in your beds and containers throughout the next few months, it’s advisable to plant out your Pansies, Violas and Primroses as soon as possible to ensure they settle happily. If you leave the planting out too late, you’ll find the plants will stay green and only flower during the early spring. Your tender perennials, such as Dahlias and Begonias, should be lifted now before the cold weather sets in and damages them. Let the Corms dry out and then cut away the green foliage. Keep them in a frost-free environment such as a greenhouse, and make sure they stay dry. Once the first signs of spring weather appear, pot them up in new, fresh compost before planting them out again in May. If you follow this advice, you can keep these plants thriving for many years. This is bulb time too. Daffodils, Crocus, Alliums and all the other spring flowering varieties are now available and should be planted straight away; All apart from Tulips, which benefit from going in later in the year.
58
Indoor flowering hyacinths planted now, will be in full bloom for Christmas. Their fragrance is not everyone’s cup of tea, but their strong, bold colours will brighten up any room. Once you have given the grass one last cut, dug and tidied up your beds, cut back untidy perennials, shrubs and roses, your garden will be ready for the winter. During the dark cold days ahead, the warm, bright spring can seem a long way off – but before we all know it, a new gardening season will be with us, and off we will go again. Another year, with new gardening challenges to overcome. See you soon, Happy Gardening,

Book Review
Autumn reads with a difference! Whether it’s a new release or an old classic, fact or fiction, there’s always time for a good book. Vox – Christina Dalcher In this dystopian tale, women are only allowed to speak 100 words a day. They’re also not allowed to read, have a job or, in fact, do very much at all other than look after their husband and children. But Dr Jean McClellan is given the chance to resume her research job and have the word limit lifted for both herself and her daughter, if she collaborates with the government. A real page-turner of a book that will appeal to fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power. Diary of a Somebody – Brian Bilston It’s difficult to describe this book. It’s part poetry, part diary, part love story, part crime novel. Somehow, it all adds up to a very funny take on suburban life. If you struggle to find time to read, this could be the book for you, as it’s written as a series of short diary entries – perfect for dipping into each day when you have a few minutes to spare. Somebody I Used To Know: A Memoir – Wendy Mitchell Wendy Mitchell was diagnosed with early-onset dementia at the age of 58. In her memoir, she talks about the reasons she sought a diagnosis, how she came to terms with it and the changes she’s made to her life. Somebody I Used To Know 64
gives us an eye-opening insight into an illness that’s all too often whispered about behind closed doors. Perhaps surprisingly, the memoir is also brimming with optimism, hope and humour. Good Omens – Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman The TV series has proven a hit, but it would be criminal to watch it without also reading the book. Crowley is a demon. Aziraphale is an angel. They’ve been good friends for a few thousand years. When they find out the apocalypse is coming and neither of the sides they represent want to stop it, the duo take it upon themselves to intervene. Hugely original, incredibly funny and, most of all, a truly entertaining story. There Is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break Years – Mike Berners-Lee Want to play your part in protecting the planet? This book can help you decide which actions to take to make the most impact. (The answers may surprise you.)Topics range from food, energy and travel to wealth distribution. It’s presented in bite-sized chunks and written in plain English. Tin Can Cook: 75 Simple Store-Cupboard Recipes – Jack Monroe Simple, wallet-friendly dishes that are delicious and nutritious? It seems too good to be true, but Jack Monroe seems to have succeeded. Her latest book puts canned food at the heart of every dish. Recipes include Rhubarb & Custard Pancakes, Sunshine Soup, Red Lentil and Mandarin Curry, and Creamy Crabby Pasta. Most only contain a handful of ingredients and only take a few minutes to prepare, using ingredients you can pick up from the local shop.

Kenzo’s Diary - A dog’s life 4 It’s been a long time since my last exciting story. During this time, I’ve discovered many new and exciting games to play with my hoomans. But there is one that I just can’t get enough of! I think they call them ‘schoos’, but all I know is that they are SO fun to play with. My silly hoomans think I’m not clever, they think that if they hide their ‘schoos’ under the table or around corners that I won’t find them, but I will, and I do. I love the cheesy smell they have and how so dam tasty they are; I love the long strings on them, allowing me to swing them up into the air, but best of all, I love the look on their faces as I go charging out the doors with their favourite pair dangling from my mouth. Let the games begin! They scream and shout at me, “KENZO NO!” but this just makes it more exciting. They try to run and catch me, but they never do. I’m the fastest dog ever, racing in loops around my garden. I could do it all day. The excitement sometimes gets too much, and my legs crumple beneath my body, causing me to faceplant into the dirt. These mistakes could cost me the game, but I jump
straight back into action. When I get a chance, I stop, and tear bits off them. They’re so fun to rip apart, but this is what makes the hoomans especially angry. Eventually they must get tired and they stop playing; this makes me sad, but I know what happens next… “Do you want a treat?”. I’m so good at this game, I get to rip and chew these tasty delights and then I get food. Either way I win, and I just can’t wait to do it all again tomorrow!

Summertime Rabbit Danger - When Flystrike Strikes! By Dr Kathryn Miller BVSc CertAVP(SAM) MRCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Medicine
Flystrike, also known as Myiasis, is an extremely painful, often fatal condition caused by flies laying eggs onto the rabbit’s fur, which quickly hatch into maggots and burrow under the skin to eat their ‘hosts’ flesh. The animal is literally being eaten alive! Flystrike is particularly common in summertime, but it can happen at other times of the year also. Why does it happen? Flies are attracted to dirty living conditions such as warm soiled hutches, and rabbits with urine-soaked fur or faeces attached to their rear ends. Rabbits who are ill are also at great risk, as they may have urinary problems or diarrhoea, or not be as active, and therefore are more likely to soil themselves and remain sitting in it. Rabbits who have wounds are also a target for flies, as are rabbits who are obese, or rabbits which are arthritic and cannot keep themselves clean. What are the symptoms of flystrike? Depending on the stage of the condition, you may see fly eggs on your rabbit’s fur, or you may see fully developed maggots crawling on their skin. The rabbit will likely be lethargic and off their food.
86
What should I do if I see Maggots on my rabbit? DO NOT WAIT - contact your vet immediately. Flystrike is incredibly fast, and maggots will quickly burrow deep into the patient’s flesh with fatal consequences if not removed as soon as possible. Do not try to wash the maggots off your rabbit’s fur at home, as this makes clipping and removal much harder for your vet. How can I prevent flystrike happening? • Cleanliness is key! Keep their accommodation as clean as you can and ensure all urine/faeces are removed daily. • Check your rabbit’s back end at least twice daily in warmer weather conditions for signs of fly eggs/maggots. • If your rabbit is overweight, take them to a free weight clinic appointment at your vets for dietary advice, so they remain active and can keep themselves clean. • Talk to your vet about topical medication to prevent fly eggs from hatching.
