Editors’ Letter Welcome to the July / August issue of Chiltern View (Villages). Hopefully, when you receive this, summer will be with us and many of you will be out and about exploring the beautiful Chilterns and beyond. I have been lucky enough this year to spend some time on our Narrowboat (Serenity) and we are heading north through England as I type this. Despite being away from ‘home’, it has made me give a lot of thought to all things ‘local’ and how important local services are to all of us. We have a lovely, well equipped boat but we have no car and all of our supplies must be sourced as close to the canal as possible, so we have become connoisseurs of local village shops, post offices and laundrettes! With my trusty shopping trolley, I shop day by day and if we run out of something then we just do without it. To find out what is going on in our new ‘local area’ I always look out for local magazines (often conveniently placed in pubs!!) – luckily, like Chiltern View, they are everywhere and packed with useful information for locals and visitors alike. We hope you enjoy this issue and everything that ‘local’ has to offer this summer – wherever you are. Until the next time….

Health Matters
Children’s Physical Health Children who are physically active early in life and stay active throughout childhood enjoy many positive benefits to their physical health, building strength, flexibility, endurance and developing and maintaining healthy bones. Like adults, children can suffer from pain as a result of a variety of lifestyle activities. And like adults, there are number of things that parents and carers can do to prevent issues arising. If your child does complain of back pain, it is important to seek advice from qualified professional, such as an osteopath.
8
Children are often required to carry bags full of books, PE kits, musical instruments and other equipment to and from school. Investing in a good quality back pack that the child should wear across both shoulders, ideally with a strap across the chest to keep the load close to their body.
Looking down to use smart phones, tablets and laptops for an extended period can pull the back and neck into an unnatural posture, resulting in pain. Placing limits on the time spent using devices and encouraging regular breaks may help to avoid problems. If your child has to use a laptop, consider purchasing a support that elevates the screen to a height that allows him or her to sit up straight to look at it. Your child’s back pain may benefit from osteopathic treatment. Using gentle manual therapy, an osteopath will help to resolve any stresses and strains that are affecting their body and relieve their pain. They can also provide lifestyle advice that may help to prevent problems returning, or to help avoid them. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Stokenchurch & surrounding areas
and manager James Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give James a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Go, go, go, get up LazyTown – enjoy a non-stop, highly interactive and energetic treat, jam-packed with singing, dancing, spectacular acrobatics, music and fun. Stephanie, an optimistic girl with bright pink hair, comes to live in LazyTown and meets a zany mix of townspeople, including the world’s laziest super-villain, Robbie Rotten. The Studley Green Community Centre arises! One year ago our community centre was in danger of closing down. A year on it has a shiny new floor, a shiny new committee, a fresh lick of paint and some new cladding. A new kitchen is next in line thanks to some lottery funding, followed by new doors and windows. The hall is the only local community venue for Studley Green, Horsleys Green, Beacons Bottom and Water End. It is regularly used by groups as diverse as a brass band, Morris Dancers, art groups and Christian fellowship. It caters for all ages: there’s a youth club on Tuesday evenings, a toddler group on Tuesday mornings, and a coffee morning the first Monday of the month. It is available for regular hire or for 16
special occasions. To continue the improvements and bolster community spirit, we are running a series of fund raising events. Do check our website for details www.cc-sg.org.uk We run regular pop up pubs, quiz nights, curry nights, and the Queen’s Garden party will be on 23rd July. All welcome. See you there! Crossroads Veterinary Centre Smart Pet Health
You love your pets and want what is best for them while also saving money. Prevention and good nutrition is the key! Pets today can live longer healthier lives than ever before largely due to the advances in veterinary medicine, diagnostics and vaccines that help protect them from deadly infectious diseases. Many infectious diseases still pose a threat to dogs and cats that aren’t vaccinated but not every pet needs every available vaccine. Your pet’s unique circumstances are considered when determining which vaccines are best for your pet.
of poor weight control, some being: joint strain, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing difficulties and generally a poor quality of life. Pet weight management must be done carefully. If weight reduction is too rapid, conditions such as hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) or diabetes may occur, requiring aggressive and expensive medical treatment.
Like people, pets need a good diet and regular exercise to live healthy longer lives. Good nutrition is vital throughout their life from enabling them to grow and develop when young to preventing and fighting disease when older. Many serious health conditions can develop as a result

Askett Nurseries
Many perennials are at their best in early Summer, full of flower and colour during May and June, but then fading as the season continues. Some gardens are then bereft of bright interest for the months running up to Autumn, but with some careful planting it is quite possible to keep your plot bursting with all manner of colourful shades right into November and the first frosts of Winter . Japanese Anemones are a particularly good choice for late Summer colour providing you with waves of pink and white flowers. Look for the varieties Honorine Jobert, Prinz Heinrich or Queen Charlotte . The Penstemon is a large family of hardy perennials that will also pick up the baton of the early birds and carry on with their flowering late on. Smaller varieties such as Pink Bedder and Wisley Flame only grow to 20cm, so are ideal for the front of a bed, whilst their taller siblings like Just Jayne and Ameila Jayne shoot up to around a metre. Another benefit of Penstemons is that they are much loved by wildlife, particularly bees .

Crocosmia Twilight Fairy Crimson One of my favourite choices for this time of year is Crocosmia. Also known as Montbretia, this plant belongs to the Iris family and is initially grown from a corm. Crocosmia produce large spiked flowers in orange, red and yellow and once established will increase in clumps as the years go by. Growing to 60-75cm in height, Lucifer is one of the best to choose, giving you a mass of rich red flowers and bright green sword like foliage - a real winner. Perhaps the best known plant that is at its best in late Summer is the Dahlia. Grown from a tuber, they must be lifted from the ground after the first frost and kept in a
cool dry environment during Winter. This can put some gardeners off, but it really is worth the trouble as Dahlias are the star of the garden during September. Perhaps the most striking variety is the Bishop of Llandaff, a spectacular example that will delight you with stunning scarlet flowers against dark, almost black foliage. We will have all these plants ready in August, so do drop in to have a browse and if you need some help and advice - just ask! Happy Gardening, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Summer Reads The Wedding Girl by Sophie Kinsella Sophie Kinsella is best known for her Shopaholic series of books, but it is well worth reading this older novel, first published in 1999 under her real name, Madeleine Wickham. Milly is about to marry the man of her dreams. The son of a successful millionaire business man, her future seems assured. Okay, so Simon and his father don’t get on, and he insists on making his own way in the world without any help, but he dotes on Milly and she loves him. A society wedding is planned complete with giant marquee, oysters, a cake which arrives in 10 boxes, and two giant ice swans. But then the wedding photographer arrives to stay at her parents’ B&B. He and Milly recognise each other, though at first she doesn’t know from where. When the penny drops Milly is struck with fear. A chance encounter on a college lawn in Oxford ten years ago when she was a naïve 18-year-old had led to a rash decision which now has ramifications and threatens to bring her dream wedding crashing down. Can she find a way to fix this, or will she have to tell Simon the truth? A slow burner that picks up pace as it progresses. In Milly the author created a very different protagonist compared with Becky in her later Shopaholic books. Milly has flaws so she’s less immediately likeable than Becky. And the novel lacks some of the frivolity of the classic chic-lit genre but this is not necessarily a bad thing, and it is interesting to see how an author’s style develops with time. Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself by Judy Blume For a lot of women today Judy Blume books formed an important part of our childhood so it is good to see that they are entertaining a new generation. Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself is 28
one of her least known novels but it’s a gem. It is 1947 and Sally J Freedman is a 10-year-old girl living in New Jersey. Stories of the war in Europe still have an impact on her. She receives the news that her family is moving south to Miami Beach in order to help her sick brother who needs a warmer climate. Sally soon realises that life in the southern states of America is very different to the life she has lived in New Jersey. Segregation is still an issue in the late 1940s and Sally is shocked to discover that a black family on the sleeper train that they are travelling on have been asked to move to a different carriage. In addition to racism the novel also touches on the issue of anti-Semitism. Sally is Jewish and she meets a man living in her building in Miami. She notices a similarity between him and Hitler and becomes convinced that he is indeed Hitler, living out his retirement in America. Although Sally doesn’t realise it he will help her come to terms with the war and the deaths of some of her relatives in the Holocaust. Sally’s imagination is the novel’s playground, as she plays an heroic role in many scenarios which help her cope with the changes in her otherwise mundane life. This is the most autobiographical of Blume’s novels and she has admitted that Sally is her, aged ten. Sally dreams of meeting her favourite Hollywood movie stars, including Esther Williams, and child star Margaret O’Brien. Sometimes as children we face situations we can’t hope to make sense of so Sally turns to her imagination to cope with this difficult year in her life. This is a delightful coming of age novel all about discovering that the world is maybe not how we might want it to be. By Willow Coby To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Romeo Update
He lives with volunteers Dianne and Lee in Selby, in Yorkshire, and is visited every day by his trainer, Helen. Dianne and Lee love Romeo! “Romeo is our first dog as volunteers”, says Dianne. “He has such a sweet but cheeky nature and is an absolute joy to be with.”
Romeo is nearly 18 months old now and has started his advanced training.
As you can see, he already recognises sounds. Helen says his quick nature helps him learn. “He masters new sounds very quickly. When he hears the alarm clock, he jumps on the bed and has cuddles.” Our deaf recipients say this is a lovely way to be woken up!
Romeo is also learning his ‘alert’. This is how he tells people about sounds. He goes to Helen and gives her a little nose-nudge. She gives the sign for ‘What is it?’, and Romeo leads her to the door. Romeo thinks this is all a fun game. However, one day his training will help him change a deaf person’s life. Romeo’s next step is matching him with a deaf recipient. We put a lot of time and thought into this. We take many factors into account, such as the dog’s character, the recipient’s lifestyle, the size of the house and so on. It’s all about doing the best thing for dog and recipient alike. We’re really pleased with Romeo’s progress. Like his Shakespearean namesake, everyone falls for him! From all of us at Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, thank you for supporting him.

All About Children
The Wonder Stuff
Four chart-toppers are among the line-up for this year’s Towersey Festival – the perfect end to a perfect summer. Returning to Thame Showground over August Bank Holiday, the four-day festival features appearances from Billy Bragg, The Wonder Stuff, Midge Ure and Nizlopi – all of whom have scored number one singles. They’re joined by folk doyenne Kate Rusby, the highly entertaining (and much imitated) Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain, musicians/ broadcasters Tom Robinson (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Nell Bryden (BBC Radio 2), The ONE Show’s Andy Kershaw, Welsh stars 9Bach, and The Young’uns – who recently picked up the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Group for the second year running. With a career that’s rooted in punk, folk, blues, country and soul, Billy Bragg hit number one in ‘88 with a cover of The Beatles She’s Leaving Home. His forthcoming new album, Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad, sees the troubadour perform a series of railway themed tunes recorded at rail stops across the US.
Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain
The Wonder Stuff visit Towersey as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations. Twenty-five years after Dizzy (with Vic Reeves) went to number 1, their new album, 30 Goes Round The Sun, has seen the Midlanders back in the charts for the first time this millennium! Midge Ure’s career is littered with huge hits, from Ultravox and Visage, to Thin Lizzy and Band Aid, via his own solo career – so expect some real surprises at Towersey from a master musician and songwriter. The festival’s fourth charttopper is duo Nizlopi. Cited as a major inspiration by Ed Sheeren, their 2005 No.1, JCB Song, oozes charm.

Wimbledon Facts Wimbledon fortnight is the annual event which enthuses even non-tennis-lovers. Here are some Wimbledon facts to muse on as you enjoy the matches. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event to be played on grass, which is cut to exactly 8mm for the competition. There is a strict dress code. Players must dress in mainly white clothing and umpires request them to comply. Even Roger Federer was asked to change his shoes because they had orange soles! There are 250 ball boys and girls (known as BBGs) at Wimbledon. Their average age is 15. They are all volunteers selected from participating schools. Historically only boys were selected but in 1977 girls were used for the first time though it was only
ProMac Locksmiths
in 1985 they were allowed to appear on centre court. More than 50 000 tennis balls used at Wimbledon every year! 700 or so go missing when they accidentally fly into the crowd. Balls are replaced every 7-9 games, and those not in use are stored in special refrigerated containers to make sure they are kept in peak condition. Wimbledon is synonymous with strawberries and more than 140 000 tubs will be consumed by spectators this year. Players on the other hand prefer bananas for energy and will consume around 15000 of them! By Louise Addison

Emmeline Pankhurst Day It still happens today: women struggling for the right to be recognised on an equal footing with men; women fighting to have a say in how things are run in maledominated governments; women dying for daring to stand up for what they believe. This was the situation in the UK at the start of last century, but by 1918 - following the valiant efforts of women during World War l when they undertook jobs normally carried out by men and proved they could do the work just as well - women over the age of 30 were granted the right to vote. Ten years later this was extended to women aged 21 and over. Emmeline Pankhurst was instrumental in winning women the right to vote. Born in Manchester on 15th July 1858, she launched the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903.
Notorious for their ‘deeds not words’ approach, its members literally fought their way to victory with demonstrations, window smashing, arson, bombings, kidnappings, hunger strikes and by chaining themselves to railings. Their most famous act of violence occurred in 1913 when Emily Davison was killed after throwing herself under the king’s horse. On July 14th we commemorate Emmeline Pankhurst Day, but perhaps the best way we can celebrate her achievement is by exercising our right to vote. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hi, my name is Michonne. I’m a 3 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Type. I am a very sweet, loving and affectionate girl and I enjoy having fuss and attention made of me. I was left outside and abandoned which has made me stressed and anxious if I’m left outside on my own. I am looking for owners who have experience with my breed and who will continue to work on my issues. I am already much happier since I have been at Stokenchurch Dog Rescue and they are giving me plenty of mental stimulation through interactive feeding toys and taking me to calm, but stimulating environments. If you can give me the time and commitment, I have the 48
potential to be a wonderful companion to someone who is willing to invest a little time and ensure I have lots of exercise and stimulation. If you are interested in offering any of our dogs a loving home, please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm. To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre is home to the Great Britain Women’s and Men’s Hockey Squad, GB Canoeing, GB Women’s Rugby 7s, and is also a training centre for GB Rowing and GB Para Rowing, along with other ad hoc Paralympic and Olympic athletes. Local athlete, Clare Griffiths (nee Strange) has been named in the GB Wheelchair Basketball Squad. This
will be Clare’s 5th Paralympics which is quite a feat. With final teams still in the process of being named, we would like to wish every athlete the very best success this summer. If you’re inspired by Rio 2016, keep an eye on our Facebook (www.facebook. com/chilternview) and Twitter (@chilterndirect) where you can find out how to try different sports and activities!

What’s Cooking in summer? This recipe really does say “summer on a plate and is one of our most popular salads. Choose firm peaches or nectarines and look out for barrel aged feta cheese if you can find it.
Grilled Peaches, Aged Feta & Walnuts
Serves 6 as a
light lunch with soft focaccia bread to mop up the juices.
Ingredients: 6 x peaches or nectarines 2 tablespoons extra virgin rapeseed oil 200gr feta cheese 100gr rocket leaves 50gr walnut halves, lightly toasted 10gr large basil leaves Clear honey Maldon sea salt Coarse ground black pepper 52
Method: 1.
2.
Cut the peaches in half and remove the stones. Cut each half into three wedges. Heat a ridged griddle pan until very hot. Place the peach wedges onto the ridges and cook for about 1 minute on both sides. The aim here is to achieve nice grill lines on the peaches. Remove the peaches and mix with the oil and season with salt and pepper. Allow to cool.
Starting with a large plate or platter, scatter over half the rocket leaves. Then dot about half the basil leaves. Scatter half the peach wedges, half the walnuts and half the feta over the plate. Try to break the feta into pieces rather than cut with a knife. Drizzle some honey over and season with salt and pepper. Repeat with the rest of the ingredients and serve straight away!

Julia Adam
(BAFHP)MCFHP DipFHT MAFHP
This is the time of year that our thoughts turn to our ‘feet on show’ whether it is because of footwear, strolling on the beach or around the pool. We suddenly realise we have feet - aargh is a common cry and Julia Adam at feet treat has surgeries to try to accommodate patients’ needs

Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir are actively recruiting for new members
On July 21st the choir are holding an open rehearsal to give a taste of singing with one of Oxfordshire’s oldest choirs.
No auditions, no sight reading and no experience is necessary and you don’t have to be Welsh either, but you do have to be male. You just need to be able to hold a note, enjoy singing and be free on Thursday nights for weekly rehearsals. From under 18 to over 80, studying, working, unemployed or
retired, everyone is welcome. No matter if you’re a novice who can’t read music or an experienced musician you’ll be made welcome. Frequently you read about research concluding that singing makes you happier and healthier. The “Oxford Welsh” have known it for years and want you to come and enjoy life with them. A Welsh male voice choir combines the majesty of a choral society, the serenity of a chamber choir, the power of a rock choir, the fun of barbershop, the joy
of gospel singing and the inclusivity of a community choir. They sing uplifting anthems, stirring choruses, reflective airs and melodic ballads. The choir started in 1928 and now consists of about 50 men singing 4-part harmony. They perform concerts at least once a month and venues range from small halls and churches to the Royal Albert Hall.
