Editors’ Letter Welcome to the September/October issue of Chiltern View (Villages). Here at Chiltern HQ we always enjoy choosing the front covers for our magazines but September/ October always presents a challenge, leading to a lively discussion in the office. At the beginning of September the evenings are starting to draw in but we can often have a last blast of sunshine and warmth before the true days of Autumn. We don’t have a meteorological crystal ball so we hope you like our cheerful front cover for this issue, I love Autumn and this little girl shows that it can be fun. We are continuing our travels and my ‘boat office’ is working well. The technology which enables me to do this is amazing but, once again, we have been impressed and grateful for ‘local’ services across the country. An engine problem in Cheshire led us to a local engineer, who not only fixed the engine but also offered to take us into the nearest town for supplies as we had been stranded in the middle of nowhere, with only a few tins of stew and some UHT milk to sustain us. He waited while we shopped and then dropped us back to our boat on the way home! We are experiencing truly local services with genuine kindness as we travel north very slowly through England.. Until the next time….

What’s Cooking in summer? One of our most popular sweet treats at What’s Cooking is our homemade chocolate tiffin. We use top quality Cocoa Powder, which makes all the difference, Green & Black’s is the best cocoa available in the supermarkets. We make this recipe in a square dish measuring 25cm x 25cm x 5cm and cut it into 16 pieces but you could use one half the size, just remember to halve the recipe.
Chocolate Tiffin Ingredients: 800gr Digestive Biscuits 200gr Raisins 500gr Unsalted Butter 270gr Golden Syrup 125gr Cocoa Powder
Method: 1.
Line your dish with greaseproof paper.
2.
Break the biscuits into small pieces. Place in a bowl and add the raisins.
3.
8
Melt together the butter, golden syrup and cocoa powder. Add this mixture to the biscuits and raisins and mix well. Tip the biscuit mixture into the dish and using the back of a tablespoon,
4.
press down firmly. In particular, make sure the mixture goes into the corners.
the same size, place on top and fill with something heavy to press down the tiffin.
5. Smooth off the mixture as best you can and cover with another sheet of greaseproof paper. If you have another dish
Now refrigerate for 4 hours, or better still overnight. Lift the tiffin out of the dish and cut into 16 pieces.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Stokenchurch & surrounding areas
and manager James Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give James a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Wycombe Swan Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs throughout the 1970s including Telegram Sam and Jeepster, he was able to obtain what would be yet another Top 20 record in 1976 that has since become one of the most memorable and everlasting signature tunes, I Love to Boogie. T.Rextasy, the world’s only official tribute to Marc Bolan and T.Rex, have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. They are the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. “T.Rextasy play with a poignant, flamboyant skill.” - The Observer Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages - if you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you! T.Rextasy comes to Wycombe Swan Wed 9 November and can be booked online wycombeswan.co.uk or on 01494 512000. 20
Exclusive Competition For a chance to win two tickets to see T.Rextasy on Wednesday 9th November, simply answer the question below: What year was T.Rex’s popular hit song I Love To Boogie released? Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Dog of the Month Hello, my name is Milo and I am a 12 year old Hungarian Vizsler. I am an older boy looking for a lovely home to spend my senior years. I am very friendly and intelligent, and will work really hard for a treat. I am a little hard of hearing and like to plod along on a walk but I’m still a young boy at heart. I have had some basic training but due to my poor hearing, I really need to be on a long line to ensure that you can get me back in. I like being with other dogs so could maybe live with a calm dog that I could happily live alongside. I like meeting new people, and would prefer to live with children aged 11+.
24
I’m a nice old guy and would just like a nice dog friendly home to settle in. If you are interested in offering Milo or any of our dogs a loving home, please visit us, we are open every day except Thursdays between 2pm - 4pm for viewing. www.stokenchurchdogrescue.org.uk 01494 482 695

Health Matters
What stress is doing to our bodies?
Stress is a combination of responses in the body. Stress can be short-term (acute) or chronic. Occasional stress is normal. Once you’ve handled the situation, the stress goes away and you heal from the episode. But, if stressors accumulate over time, eventually the body becomes inefficient at handling even minimal stress. The brain, heart, lungs, vessels, and muscles become so chronically over or under activated that they become damaged. Research has shown that prolonged stress can produce actual tissue changes and organ dysfunction.
32
Studies demonstrate that our emotions are not just in our mind, they are in every cell of our bodies. Physical stress can lead to mental & emotional stress. When muscles are taut and tense for long periods of time, this may trigger other reactions of the body and even promote stress-related disorders. For example, both tensiontype headache and migraine headache are associated with chronic muscle tension, in the area of the shoulders, neck and head.
OSTEOPATH DAVID GRAY
Over time, you may stop exercising and turn to pain medication, setting off an unhealthy cycle. Stress can be insidious; working its way into our lives before we are aware of the consequences. You need not be a victim to chronic stress, it is important to understand the choices, in your ability to respond to feelings. There are many techniques for managing stress, such as exercising, tissue treatment and using relaxation techniques. To learn practically about how your lifestyle may be affecting your health, inside and out, book a consultation with your Osteopath today.

Paralympics We hope that you enjoyed the Rio Olympics and are as proud of our athletes as we are! We can now set our sights on the Paralympic Games, taking place between 7th and 19th September. As mentioned in the last issue we have local athlete Clare Griffiths (nee Strange), who is taking part in the Wheelchair Basketball. We are also very proud of Erin Orford, who has been selected as reserve for the ParaDressage with her beautiful horse Dior (Pimms). We wish you all the very best success. There are many inspirational stories that surround Olympic and Paralympic athletes. 34
Some of our favourite stories include those of: Rachel Morris, who won time trial gold in hand cycling in Beijing, Bronze Medal in the hand cycling road race in London, and is now competing in para rowing in Rio! Jeanette Chippington, who has already represented Great Britain in 5 consecutive Olympics, from Seoul 1988 – Athens 2004 in the Paralympic Swimming, having already won 12 medals! Jeanette will be competing in paracanoe in Rio. Anne Dickins, who will also be competing in paracanoe. Four years ago, Anne was working as a Games Maker at London 2012. A chance meeting with a canoeing coach lead to Anne deciding to try canoeing – despite suffering from seasickness! Anne has since won 2 World

titles and is looking to add a Paralympic medal to that tally. If you have been inspired by Team GB this summer, why not try a new sport for yourself? We’d love to hear your inspirational stories as well! We’re now coming into bulb season Autumn is the time to plant Spring flowering bulbs. Most gardeners think of Daffodils , Tulips and perhaps Crocus as the one to plant and certainly these varieties are rightly popular, but there are a number of lesser known bulbs that can be planted now to give you a splash of colour next Spring . The Allium family are an excellent choice, the bigger varieties such as Giganteum, Gladiator and Mount Everest reach up to 140cm, so these are tall plants, ideal for the rear of the border, the smaller Alliums , Roseum , Scubertii and Christophii will remain at a compact 50cm. If you have a semi shady spot, beneath shrubs or deciduous trees, go for the Anenome family. These bulbs will soon naturalise, and in a few years, just a small number of bulbs will fill out to give you bright swathes of colour. The Blanda variety (blues and whites) are a neat 15cm, whilst De Caen are a tad taller, around 25cm. Chionodoxa, also known as glory of the snow, is a good
38
alternative to Crocus. Small, just 10cm high, in pink, white and blue, they flower early, often the first bulb to poke their heads up in February.
The smaller Fritillarias, known as Snakes-head, are another cup of tea entirley. Snakeshead are smaller, delicate plants around 20cm high, a really excellent choice.
One of my favourite bulbs is Erythronium, or Dog’s Tooth. A great choice if you want some ground cover, the most striking variety is Pagoda. Best in partial shade and rich well fed compost, to get the best from Pagoda, do make sure they don’t get baked by the sun during the Summer.
Our selection of bulbs will be ready from the end of August, and you can happily plant right up to the end of November. Along with bulbs, this is the time for your winter pansies, violas, wallflowers and primroses, so get these in too before the Winter takes hold.
For something big and bold, go for Fritillaria Imperialis. These are big bulbs that produce large showy orange and yellow flowers that smell of coffee.

Choosing a Nursery Choosing your child’s nursery can be daunting, especially if you are a first time parent, but there are steps you can take to make it easier. First, check the hours on offer at your local private or council run nurseries. Find out the hourly/daily/ weekly costs and if they have any places available. Read Ofsted reports to give an idea of how well they are run and how the needs of the children are being met. From here, make a shortlist and arrange to visit several nurseries, when you should look out for the following: Staff - What is their training and experience? How do they interact with the children? What is the staff to child ratio? Do they use a similar approach to the children as you? 40
Children - Do they seem busy and relaxed? Are they happy and purposeful? What is the intake? Premises - Are they clean, well maintained and secure? Are you happy with their size? Do they feel welcoming? Is there an outside play space? Activities - Are they fun and interesting? Is time set aside for exercise and relaxation? Speak to local schools and other parents as this can aid the selection process, but mostly go with your gut feeling - and remember to book well in advance as the best nurseries tend to get booked up quickly! A Good Read ‘The Snowman’ by Jo Nesbø A bit of a different novel this month and a genre that is growing in popularity these days: Nordic noir. ‘The Snowman’ is about as far from Miss Marple as you can get and will appeal to fans of Stig Larsson’s ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Nesbø is the creator of Harry Hole, an ex-alcoholic detective from Oslo. Hole became famous when he was sent to Australia to help solve the murder of a Norwegian citizen. This sealed his reputation upon his return to Norway: a country lacking in serial killers. Until the events of ‘The Snowman’. In this, the seventh Harry Hole book, women start to go missing from the Oslo area. They all have one thing in common: they are all married. In each case there doesn’t seem to be any reason why these women would go missing. Marital status alone is not enough to make a connection but in these snowy regions of Northern Europe there is one more similarity between the cases. In each case a snowman appears at the murder scene. This is an engrossing novel which draws you, not only into the case, but into Hole’s life in the capital of Norway. As in all of Nesbø’s novels, the city of Oslo and the surrounding areas come to life almost as if they were characters in their own right. Hole is far from a hero, his character flaws are ever present and conflict between him and his colleagues is a common theme. As with many novels in this genre life is shown, warts and all, and it makes for a novel that is dark, 48
bleak, alien, and yet one you will struggle to put down. ‘Titanic: An Edwardian Girl’s Diary 1912’ by Ellen Emerson White There can be very few adults who have not heard of the sinking of the Titanic on its maiden voyage in 1912 and for young readers this novel offers an introduction to this key historical event which changed the safety measures on ships for ever. The ‘My Story’ books are diaries which help to teach children of key events in British history. In this novel 12-year-old Margaret Anne Brady is an orphan who dreams of escaping her life. Following the death of her father five years earlier she was left at the orphanage by her older brother as he had to go to America to seek a new life and could not take her with him. Ever since then she has dreamed of being reunited with him. So she cannot believe her luck when she is chosen to accompany wealthy American Mrs Carstairs across the Atlantic. Finally, she can be reunited with her brother. But their passage is booked on The RMS Titanic. This floating microcosm of all layers of British society is about to meet its demise and change the lives of many, including Margaret. With vivid descriptions of life aboard the ship, with its crisp white tablecloths, the reader is transported back to the Edwardian era where she learns that class is everything and decides if you live or die. School Woes While many children run through the classroom door each day, with barely a backwards glance, others, sadly, do not find the school experience such a happy one.
Hearin
The occasional grumble is rarely anything to worry about, but if your child frequently seems unhappy, you may need to intervene. Early intervention can help to avoid long-term issues, and your child is more likely to develop a love of learning if they enjoy the whole school experience. There are a range of reasons your child may dread going to school, from bullying, to being shy or particularly sensitive to noisy situations. They may simply not like their teacher, or struggle with being separated from you. Try to figure out exactly what’s bothering your child, and if there’s anything you can easily do to fix it. Would arranging some play dates help them to make friends? Could changing to packed lunches ease their dread of dinner time? Do they need more quality one-on-one time with you, to help them feel more secure when you’re not together? It isn’t always easy to get to the bottom of a child’s reluctance to walk through the school gates. Sometimes they can’t explain what it is that makes them scared, or they don’t feel able to tell you. But do persevere. Try to pick a neutral time to discuss it, and take it gently. Raise the subject when they’re feeling relaxed and up for talking, ie not right after school, when they’re tired, or when they want to just go and play. If your child is older, they may find it easier to open up to another family member or family friend, who isn’t involved 56
in making them go to the place they dread every day. Once you have a better idea of what the problem is, book a time to speak to your child’s teacher, and, if needs be, the headteacher. They will be well used to dealing with a wide range of issues, from bullying to a lack of confidence, and should work with you to ease any problems. Do speak to your child about this first however, as you going into school could be exactly what they’re dreading and may make them clam up next time there’s a problem.

Hear in Thame
At Aston Hearing, we believe in helping people to achieve ‘happy hearing’. We are a family-run independent hearing centre established in the local area for nearly thirty years. We have recently opened in Thame and are offering hearing care services for all the family. Hearing Assessments
Our hearing assessments are designed to give you a complete picture of your hearing capabilities and advise you how to make the most of them. We take a comprehensive hearing test including air and bone conduction, and in some cases also undertake a speech in noise test. Consultations also give clients the chance to discuss their hearing with a specialist. We can give professional advice, recommendations and communication strategies designed to help you to maximise your hearing potential.
We supply customised ear plugs for sleeping, shooting, industry, music and water sports. It is important to protect your ears from loud noises and cold water to preserve your current level of hearing. All our plugs are moulded to the unique shape of your ear and are designed to be comfortable and durable. We have a wide range of styles and colours to suit both adults and children.
Hearing Technology
Wax Removal
Our clinical ear care service offers a quick, painless and effective solution for blocked ears. We can use a combination of methods including microsuction and endoscopic wax removal to achieve the best results. We take pictures of your ear canals before and after the procedure, so you can be assured that they are completely clear. We are also able to send a referral letter to your GP should it be necessary.
BEFORE
Customised Ear Plugs
The very latest hearing technology is prescribed and fitted at our Thame premises. As we are an independent centre, we can choose between all the major hearing aid manufacturers to give you the best possible hearing solution. We offer a wide range of technology, styles and price levels to suit your individual needs. Trials of hearing devices are also available, as well as a 60 day money back guarantee to ensure complete satisfaction with your hearing instruments. We can also look after any existing hearing aids, adjusting them to best suit your requirements.
AFTER
Appointments are usually available at short notice and 6 days a week, we run a drop-in clinic every Tuesday 01844 396057 (Thame) morning. You can find us at 112 High AMERSHAM THAME kate@astonhearing.co.uk Street, through a black door next to Robert Gatward jewellers. We look www.astonhearing.co.uk forward to meeting you. Crossroads Veterinary Centre Pet Care Myths and Tips quickly become inflamed and infected if licked at. Top Dental Tip Daily teeth brushing is a fantastic way to reduce dental disease in your pet. Plaque and bacteria builds up in your pet’s mouth daily. Brushing your animal’s teeth (with pet specific toothpaste) is the best way of removing this dirt, keeping teeth and gums healthy and reducing the risk of dental treatment. Top Dog Weight Tip If you have a dog that struggles with his/her weight, then feed bits of raw carrot as a treat rather than a doggy biscuit. Many dogs love the taste and will work really well for them, but they have many fewer calories.
We hear so many ‘urban myths’ and ‘old-wives-tales’ at work; many of them are not detrimental to a pets’ health but others can be extremely dangerous! Below are some common myths busted as well as some of our best home care tips: Myth – I should routinely bathe my pet. Routine bathing can strip the natural oils from your pet’s coat, making them more at risk of suffering from dandruff and skin conditions. It is much better to brush your pets coat daily to help stimulate these natural oils. If your pet does roll in something ‘unsavoury’ then ensure you use a pet specific shampoo, not a human or even baby shampoo. Myth – It is good for an animal to lick at a wound. Certainly not! Consider what area your pet was licking just moments before! Your pet’s mouth is full of bacteria and if your pet has a wound then this can very
