Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View magazine. As I write this we are still in the grip of the wettest winter for many years and only ducks and wellington boot retailers are happy ( especially our little chap on the front cover!) , but we are confident that spring is just around the corner ( today I noticed the first bluebells pushing up through the damp ground). Some of you may have been unlucky enough to suffer some property damage during the storms but fortunately we have a great selection of reliable local trades people in Chiltern View who may be able to help you out – don’t delay…call them today! We have moved our magazine business forward this year and are embracing social media in order to give our Advertisers the opportunity for even more local promotion ( Facebook and Twitter for business). As a result of a request on our Facebook page for great local photos we were sent this fabulous shot of winter trees by Sam Story , do you have something that may brighten up our magazines…if so please e.mail it to salesvv@live.co.uk. Until next time

Recipe Bakewell Tart Modern commercial versions of the Bakewell Tart are easily found in most supermarket cake departments, but they are generally oversweet with a stodgy texture. This home-made Bakewell Tart is well worth the effort then, being light, crumbly and full of flavour. 1 packet shortcrust pastry 200g raspberry jam 175g butter, room temperature 175g caster sugar 4 large eggs 2 dessertspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 dessertspoon almond extract 250g ground almonds 60g flaked almonds Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C (fan)/Gas mark 5. Grease either a round dish (28cm diameter) or an oblong tin (20 by 30cm) with soft butter. You can also put some greaseproof paper in the bottom of the dish, to help the finished tart come out if you want to serve onto a plate before cutting. Roll out the pastry until it’s fairly thin and then put into the dish or tin, trimming off the excess pastry. Cover the base of the pastry case with greaseproof paper and then blind bake for 15 minutes by covering the paper with ceramic beans or dried pulses.

pastry case has cooled, spread the jam evenly over the base. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Whisk the eggs in a jug then gradually add to the mixing bowl, beating as you go. Add the lemon juice, lemon zest and the almond extract, then gently fold in the ground almonds. Spoon the mixture evenly into the case and gently spread to the sides of the dish. Sprinkle the flaked almonds over the top and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the filling is golden on top and feels firm in the middle. Remove and allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Remove the paper and beans from the baked pastry, then return to the oven for a further 5 minutes until the pastry is golden. When the

Waterperry Gardens Waterperry Gardens is more than just beautiful gardens, it is home to a Gallery and Gift Barn, a Garden Shop and Plant Centre, a fantastic Teashop and a Museum of Rural Life. There are a whole host of events held throughout the year and a full programme of arts, crafts and gardening courses run on site. It truly is a hidden gem amongst Oxfordshire’s rolling countryside just a few miles from Thame and the M40. The stunning 8 acre ornamental gardens are bursting back to life as spring is in the air, with Scillas, crocus (spring bulbs) and Brunneran blooming in March. April brings the county flower of Oxfordshire to the gardens as Fritillaries fill the wild flower meadows and May leads the gardens into full bloom as the herbaceous border flourishes until late September. There really is something special to see every month of the year. The Plant Centre and Garden Shop are a gardens lovers paradise, customers can take a piece of Waterperry home with them as most of the plants on sale are propagated from the gardens and grown on site in the nursery. The Garden Shop has a great range of garden sundries, tools, bulbs and seeds, including Waterperry apple juice. The delicious juice is made from Waterperry grown apples and juiced on site in the Orchards. The Gallery and Gift Barn are a shoppers delight with unique ideas for the home and garden along with some great gift ideas for family and friends. It truly is a paradise for tranquil PAGE 20

shopping trips with a wide variety of products to choose from and free parking. Miss H’s Teashop prides itself on producing freshly prepared home cooked food using local ingredients. What happened in March 1994 By Patrick D Cousins During joint operations between the US Army and Air Force on the 24th March, two planes collided over a military airfield. A two-seater Fighting Falcon struck a Hercules transporter at an altitude of about 300 feet. The damaged Hercules managed to land safely and the fighter pilots ejected from their doomed aircraft, which crashed onto the runway causing massive damage, including the destruction of another transport plane. Twenty four men on the ground were killed and over eighty were injured. 4th: Nearly eight years before the Twin Towers were destroyed, four Muslim terrorists were convicted of bombing the World Trade Center. A truck bomb was detonated beneath the North Tower, with the intention of causing it to fall into the South Tower. This failed to happen but six people were killed and over 1,000 injured. 9th: The IRA fired five mortar bombs from a car in the car park of the Excelsior Hotel at Heathrow. Two of them landed on the northern runway, which was closed for ninety minutes. None of the bombs exploded. 12th: A photograph claimed by Marmaduke Wetherell to be proof of the existence of the Loch Ness Monster was proved to be a hoax. 23rd: Whilst flying a Russian Airbus over Siberia, pilot Yoroslav Kudrinsky thought it would be a good idea to let his twelve-year-old daughter have a drive, according to taped conversations on the flight deck. He then handed over the controls to his sixteen-year-old son, who accidentally turned off the automatic pilot and the plane crashed, killing all 75 people on board. PAGE 30

27th: The Eurofighter, named Typhoon, made its first flight in Manching, Germany. Development of this aircraft began in 1983 and it was designed to be in service until the mid-twenty-first century. Initially a collaboration between the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy production was delayed by political issues and eventually France withdrew from the project. It was not used in combat until the intervention in the Libyan conflict in 2011. Controversial TV tycoon Silvio Berlusconi’s right-wing coalition won the Italian general election and he began the first of four terms as Prime Minister. 28th: A church in Alabama was hit by a tornado, killing 22 people. BBC Radio Five Live made its first broadcast. Three of the best-selling singles were: The Sign Ace Of Base Bump N’ Grind R. Kelly Without You/ Never Forget You Mariah Carey Petrol cost about 49p per litre Average cost of a house was about £70,000 Patrick D Cousins is the author of Rainbows, Dreams and Angels, available from Amazon. This is a double novella with both stories set in east London, mainly during the 50s and 60s.

Famous People of the Chilterns:

JOHN HAMPDEN 1594 – 1643

John Hampden is one of this area’s most famous historical figures, a rebel who stood up for his beliefs and played a key role on the Parliamentary side in the Civil War. Statues of John Hampden in Aylesbury’s Market Square, and the central lobby of the House of Commons, commemorate this controversial man whom his contemporaries called ‘The Patriot’.

On the outbreak of war, Hampden formed his own regiment and led them in battle. His eldest son was killed in a skirmish at Chenies Manor and he himself was wounded at the Battle of Chalgrove Field, near Watlington, when his troops were ambushed by Prince Rupert’s Royalist cavalry. He was carried to Thame where he survived six days and died on 24th June 1643. Grieving colleagues carried his body through the night for burial in the church of St Mary Magdalen, next to Hampden House in Great Hampden.

First cousin to Oliver Cromwell, John Hampden was descended from an ancient Buckinghamshire family who owned Hampden House, in Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire. He went to Lord Williams’s School in Thame and served as MP for various seats including Wendover and Buckinghamshire. His first wife was Elizabeth Symeon of Pyrton, near Watlington, with whom he had nine children. Noted for his “flowing courtesy to all men”, he was a skilled and clever debater in Parliament and had a special aptitude for committee work.

PAGE 38

Today, a monument to John Hampden in St Mary Magdalen Church commemorates the life of this man of great integrity. Nearby, a Ship Money Memorial is located on Honor End Lane, north of Prestwood (postcode HP16 9QZ). Hampden House is not open to the public but can be seen from the waymarked Chiltern Way circular walk nearby. This profile is one of 32 profiles of colourful and talented people from this area which can be found in the full colour booklet Famous People of the Chilterns, published by the Chilterns Conservation Board. You can purchase copies for only £4.99 plus p&p from www.chilternsaonb.org/shop. The Chilterns Conservation Board is the public body charged with protecting and promoting the nationally-important Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Images supplied: John Hampden

He became a powerful influence in the struggle between Charles I and Parliament that culminated in the Civil War. In 1637 Hampden refused to pay the 20 shillings Ship Money on his Stoke Mandeville property – a tax which would assist the king in bypassing Parliament. He was made a test case and, although judgement went against him, he became a popular hero. In 1641 Parliament passed the Grand Remonstrance of grievances against the king, put together by a number of people including John Hampden. Hampden was accused of High Treason but eluded capture. 6,000 Buckinghamshire men walked to London in his support, with copies of the Remonstrance in their hats.

Crossroads Vets Rabbit Awareness

Rabbits are now the third most common pet in the UK. Although they may seem like an easy animal to have as a pet, they do require special attention and specific husbandry. Easter is a good time of year to make sure your rabbits vaccinations are up to date. Rabbits require annual injections against both Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease. The fleas that carry the virus that causes Myxomatosis are most active in the spring and summer months and this is when disease outbreaks are most likely to occur. As the weather starts to get warmer rabbits are also at risk of fly strike. This is when flies lay their eggs on rabbit skin that has been soiled. These eggs hatch in to maggots which continue

to eat at the skin and can cause terrible suffering. This can be easily prevented through good hutch hygiene and correct diet to prevent diarrhoea. Check animals daily for soiled areas and ensure they are kept clean and dry. Insect repellents such as Rearguard are also advisable to help prevent fly strike. E.cuniculi is a parasite present in over 50% of healthy rabbits. It can cause neurological signs including tremors and a head tilt and can be fatal. It can be treated using a wormer called Panacur and this should be given routinely to any new rabbits entering your home. Look out for Rabbit Awareness Week at your local veterinary practice, during which time free rabbit health checks are available.

Eat Well, Laugh Much, Drink Often…

Plant of the Month – Azalea An azalea shrub blooms in summer in the Northern hemisphere and their funnel or bell shaped flowers often last a good few weeks. They splash colour across their branches and are a great choice for coverage under trees, happiest in acidic soil and moist, leafy conditions since their roots are pretty shallow. They enjoy the morning sun and then protection from an overhanging tree in the afternoon. If your azalea is destined to be in a pot, make sure it’s not a cement one as this will affect PAGE 42

the pH level of the soil, which is best kept mildly acidic. Feed them every spring to encourage a strong, healthy plant. www.chilterndirectories.co.uk

Book Review: March On Now the weather’s improving and spring has almost sprung, it’s time to head outside and explore the great outdoors. OK, so this might be taking the month of March a tad literally, but how about taking it literary? Here are some of our top tips for great reads about epic journeys. A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson Far from being a stroll among the bluebells, the Appalachian Trail is a two thousand mile route that goes right the way along the East Coast of North America, from Georgia to Maine. Bill Bryson’s hilarious account of all the things that will kill you along the way will have you longing for a bit of adventure. This is a trek that’s a journey into the wild. Some don’t make it alive. Rest assured, if the bears don’t get you then the poison ivy will. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Rachel Joyce This is an extraordinary story that begins with the most ordinary of objects: a letter. Harold Fry receives a letter from old flame and dear friend Queenie, who is now in a hospice and facing her mortality. Harold writes her a reply but then on a whim, decides he must walk the 600 miles to hand deliver it to her, leaving his wife upstairs doing the housework. It’s such an amazing and heart-warming story. Will Harold reach Queenie in time? Walking Home: A Poet’s Journey, Simon Armitage Most walkers complete the Pennine Way by going South to North but Simon Armitage decided it would be more poetic if he did it the other way around. He made the 256 mile journey from Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish border to his native Yorkshire, and the village where he was born. True to form, Armitage decided not to look like he PAGE 46

was on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition but to wander as a lonely troubadour, penniless on the Pennine Way and give poetry readings in village halls, churches and pubs. It’s packed with Northern soul and would be best enjoyed with a pint of stout in a pub. Walking, Henry David Thoreau According to Thoreau, in order to find happiness, we just need to spend more time outdoors. More specifically, not only do we need to constantly reconnect with nature but we need to be moving and discovering and taking long afternoon walks. As a writer he took inspiration from his surroundings and revelled in the wild and the free. Here he did his greatest thinking and he remains a hero among environmentalists and fans of American literature alike. Rabbit-Proof Fence, Doris Pilkington, Nugi Garimara In 1931 the Australian government dictated that all Aboriginal and mixed race children should be removed from their homes and put into settlements to assimilate into white culture. This is the true story of three little girls who followed the rabbit-proof fence 1000 miles across the harsh Australian outback, all the way back home. Doris Pilkington’s mother was one of those girls and here she tells her mother’s remarkable survival story. It’s an absolutely unbelievable account of the human spirit and its resilience. The Hobbit, J R R Tolkien If there’s one thing in life that hobbits enjoy more than anything, it’s comfort. From the sanctuary of his hobbit-hole, Bilbo Baggins is plucked by the wizard Gandalf and taken off on an extraordinary and most unexpected journey, deep into Middle Earth. Accompanying Gandalf and his band of thirteen dwarves, the world’s most reluctant hero must help them raid the treasures of Smaug the Magnificent, a dangerous dragon. Written for Tolkien’s own grandchildren, it’s the prelude to The Lord of the Rings and a fantastic odyssey into the unknown.

Monthly Focus – World Water Day Originally agreed during the UN Conference in 1992, World Water day is observed on 22 March each year with the UN and member nations devoting the day to the world’s water resources. Each year, one of the UN agencies will take the lead to promote international awareness and activities for the day which have included topics such as sanitation in 2008, Clean water for a healthy world in 2010 and Water Co-operation last year. The World Water Day for 2014 is being co-ordinated by Unido and the United Nations University. This year the theme is Water and Energy and the main celebrations will be taking PAGE 50

place in Tokyo, Japan at the UNU headquarters. Working closely with Member States and other stakeholders the activities for the year will focus on inequities especially for the ‘bottom billion’ who live in poor conditions without access to safe drinking water, sanitation or sufficient food and energy services. Emergency Admissions

an article from Stokenchurch Medical Centre Last year there were 5.3 million emergency admissions to hospitals. The financial cost alone is approximately £12 billion out of an NHS budget of £100 billion and nearly double the NHS spends on general practice. Winter is especially difficult and is the busiest time of year for the NHS. Many people find it surprising that the peak time for Accident and Emergency attendance is between 11am to 3pm Monday to Fridays. Interestingly community services such as walk in centres, GP surgeries or minor injury units seem to have little impact on how we use A and E services. Often when a crisis occurs A and E is our first port of call especially taking into account the sense of panic that is felt when we are ill. Local GP surgeries have been working together in order to try and help all our patients access the correct help and advice needed. If you or family members are ill think about the following: • Talk to your GP surgery – if your illness has gone on for a while or you are worried contact your surgery. GPs, or practice nurses. • Calling NHS 111 – When you need help quickly but it is not an emergency, call 111 and you will be directed to the best service for your needs. NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. • Using local pharmacists this is a good place to start when you need health advice. • Minor injuries and illness unit (MIIU), based at Wycombe Hospital, is for minor PAGE 60

injuries and illness which you cannot treat yourself or you think are unsuitable for a GP appointment. Most of the Gps in Buckinghamshire, including Stokenchurch Medical Centre, work evenings and weekends on an out of hour’s rota. There is always a group of Gps working 24 hrs a day 7 days a week, though we no longer do our on call from our individual surgeries working collectively from the MIIU department at Wycombe Hospital. If you need GP advice call 111 after hours and either a GP can speak to you on the phone or arrange a face to face appointment. If you then need hospital admission we can then refer directly to the correct hospital department saving you the hassle of going through the busy A and E department. We appreciate how difficult it can be to see a GP at a convenient time, even though the number of appointments has increased over the past 3 years. Keeping up with demand is not always easy and as doctors and nurses we are grateful for your understanding and support.
