Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March/ April issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine. We are feeling optimistic here at Chiltern View headquarters because although the weather outside our windows is cold and grey, we have definitely got that ‘Spring’ feeling. We decided on these lovely bright and sunny front covers that truly represent this time of year and cheer us all up. It’s a time of new beginnings, particularly in our gardens, with leaves turning green, shrubs starting to bloom and spring flowers poking their heads up. If you need some help deciding how to get your garden in shape again once the winter has passed, we have some great advice for gardeners from Askett Nurseries
(p22/23) plus they have an excellent coffee shop as well as a wide selection of plants! We also have a number of local articles this issue and lots of community events that will give you ideas for your diaries. Whether you are into bridge, bowls, musical evenings, other sports or lovely walks in the Chilterns, there is something for everyone. Don’t forget Mother’s Day either (March 26th) and what about an alternative gift of a book this year? (p20), a refreshing change from flowers or chocolates! It is definitely a time for renewal, new plans for holidays, homes and gardens and here at Chiltern View we strive hard to help with those plans. We have many advertisers, with a wide range of skills and products – but all LOCAL – all here to help you realise your plans for renewal.

Don’t Be An April Fool Keep your stuff safe with PC protection
Connecting an unprotected PC to the internet is rather like stripping naked, covering yourself in honey and throwing yourself into a nest of angry wasps: the question isn’t whether you’re going to get stung, it’s how bad the results are going to be. The internet is full of unpleasantness, and some of it is trying to make you an April fool. Trying to con people on the internet is very cheap and safe: the likelihood of getting caught is incredibly small, and the cost of contacting even millions of people is incredibly small too. So entire call centres make fake technical support calls to unsuspecting people, trying to convince them that their PC is broken and they need to download software to fix it. That software then nabs their personal information, or their online banking details, and that information is used to compromise their various accounts and steal their money. It’s important to stress this: if you’ve ever tried to call the support lines of Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, BT or any other big firm, you’ll appreciate how long it takes to get 6
through. These companies don’t have the resources to make proactive support calls, let alone monitor your computer for any problems. Apps can help. A powerful but simple password manager such as the excellent 1Password solves a big problem with the internet - you need different, strong passwords that can’t be guessed for each individual site or service, but you also need to remember them. 1Password creates and remembers them for you, automatically filling them in when you need them. This means that if, say, your favourite photo site is hacked, your login details can’t be used to get into your Amazon account, eBay account or PayPal account. Macs don’t generally suffer from malicious software, but Windows PCs do: there are more Windows users in the world, so they’re a more tempting target. That means security software is essential. BitDefender Anti-Virus Free Edition, AVAST anti-virus and AVG Free anti-virus can protect your PC from malicious files and apps, and they’re constantly updated with details of the latest threats. In the case of apps such as BitDefender, they can also scan links in your emails to let you know whether that
email from the bank or Apple is fake (the answer, 99 times out of a hundred, is yes). These apps matter because in addition to fake emails and malicious software, there’s a new villain in town: ransomware. Ransomware is a program that sneaks onto your computer and locks you out of it completely, meaning you can’t access your email, your photo library or anything else of value on your PC. The only way to unlock it appears to be to call the supplied telephone number and pay the ransom, which is usually a few hundred pounds. That’s a really bad idea, because the details you use to pay the ransom are then used again and again until you have no money left. Security software such as the apps mentioned above can protect you from ransomware in two ways. They can prevent it from getting onto your PC in the first place, and remove it if your PC is already infected. When you consider the cost of the software is zero and the likelihood of an unsecured PC getting something nasty is 100%, security software is a musthave for anybody with a PC.

Vet’s Corner
Leptospirosis. – A potentially fatal disease. Leptospirosis is a lifethreatening disease affecting many animal species including dogs and humans. Organisms, similar to bacteria, called spirochetes, cause the disease and are carried in the kidneys of wildlife, such as mice and rats and pass out in their urine. The urine is infectious but the spirochete can survive in damp, muddy areas like riverbanks or wet farm tracks. Our dogs can become infected by walking and playing in these areas.
Signs include: sudden fever, stiffness, weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea, jaundice, haemorrhage and acute renal failure. As the disease progresses to affect the liver and kidneys, especially in vulnerable animals, such as the young or unvaccinated dogs, sadly, it can be fatal. Vaccinations over the last 30 years have been very successful in reducing the incidence of two main types of the disease in dogs (L.canicola and L.icterohaemorrhagiae). Recently, however, we have seen an increase in the European strains, L.grippotyphosa and L. pomona.
Typically the disease is treated with the use of antibiotics but we have, now, the ability to vaccinate against these new strains with the L4 vaccine, available from your veterinary surgeon. Vaccination needs to be repeated every year and can be started at any age over 6 weeks old. Do not take risks. Speak to your vet. Dr Mandy Elgin BVMS MRCVS

Askett Nurseries
So here we are again, at the beginning of another gardening season. Spring is here, and now we can get on with all those tasks that we planned during the cold short days of Winter. If you’ve been looking at that evergreen shrub for the last few months and have come to the conclusion that it’s just not in the right place, there is still time to move it. There is always a risk moving a shrub, and indeed that increases with bigger and older specimens, but if you dig deep causing as little root damage as possible, then replant in a well-watered and fertilised spot, keep going with the water on a regular basis, then all should be well. Sometimes, if the shrub just has to go, whether it’s got too big for its boots and is either blocking a view or smothering other plants, you’ve not got much to lose. Now is the time to tackle those Cornus (Dogwood) and Salix (Willow). These varieties will thank you for a good prune at this time of year. They are mostly grown for their colourful Winter stems, and to keep them doing their 22
job next year, it pays to clip last season’s growth back hard. This will encourage fresh new stems that will give you a blaze of colour again from November onwards.
the weather. We can still get some sharp frosts at this time of year, so if you have planted them out, have some horticultural fleece close by to protect your crop overnight.
Take a look at your herbaceous hardy perennials. They will be popping their heads up after being dormant, and if they’ve been in your garden for a few years, may well be looking overgrown and rootbound. To regenerate them, and get some new free plants, carefully lift and divide them. Using two forks back to back is the simplest way of getting them out of the soil, then use a sharp spade or a garden knife to cut them into sections. Pop a few back into your plot, then pot on what you have left. There you are - free plants! If your friends do the same thing, why not set up a little plant swap shop?
In early Spring, the weather really can try to fool a gardener into thinking that all the bad weather is behind us. We can have a few lovely warm days and it seems as if we’ve turned the corner, then 24 hours later we can be under snow! So, do beware, don’t get too impatient and start to think about planting out your tender annuals and vegetable plants. You can’t beat nature - don’t plant anything tender out until early May at the very earliest!
We’re getting close to seed potato and onion set time, but do keep a close eye on
See you soon, Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Junior Football club in Risborough supporting the community! Risborough Rangers Junior football club which provides football for boys and girls from six years - sixteen years of age have helped raise money to provide defibrillators around Princes Risborough. The aim of the club last year was to have this very important piece of equipment available within close proximity at every ground where these boys and girls play football. With the help of the RCDG http://rcdg.org and RRP 24
http://risboroughruninthepark. weebly.com this has now been achieved. You will have seen these cabinets around our town and god forbid we have to use them but these AED’s are for the community – should you be that person that is required
to help someone who has had a cardiac arrest then once you have phoned 999 you be will be guided via the emergency services on where your nearest AED is situated and on how you can use this equipment.

Ingeniously situated within LASSCO Three Pigeons at Milton Common and conveniently close to Junction 7 of the M40, the idea of showcasing their business within this lovely old building is brilliant. Both businesses complement each other, as what better way is there to view quality stoves in situ! There are 5 fireplaces around the pub where you can do just that and at the same time enjoy a warming coffee and a delicious slice of cake. There’s plenty of parking too! Princes Risborough Ridgeway Circular Walk Whiteleaf Woods
Walk Length: 7 mile circular walk Starting Point: Princes Risborough Library, Bell St, Princes Risborough HP27 0AA A 7 mile circular walk following sections of The Ridgeway National Trail and the Chiltern Way, through best of Chilterns scenery including wooded hills and nature reserves. You will pass some great rural pubs, a windmill and some far-reaching views. The walk starts gently along the Ridgeway National Trail, an ancient path widely recognized as England’s oldest road, dating back to the Neolithic Age. The route then leaves the Ridgeway and climbs up to Loosley Row, home to the Lacey Green Windmill, England’s oldest remaining ‘smock’ mill, so called due to its resemblance to an old fashioned farmer’s smock. The 17th century windmill was restored to working by The Chiltern Society and is open to the public at certain times. You can refuel at the Whip Inn, perched next to the Windmill or a little further on at the historic Pink & Lily pub, frequented by the famous First World War poet Rupert Brooke. From here on the route takes you through spectacular beech woodlands until you come out on open downland at Whiteleaf Hill. : The chalk hill-figure of
Whiteleaf Cross has dominated the local landscape for several centuries. Its full history is unknown but is thought to have been constructed by the Saxon king Edward the Elder to commemorate a battle. The Bronze Age burial mounds date back to c35002500 BC. There are several WWI practice trenches at the southern end of the site adjacent to The Ridgeway. From Whiteleaf Hill you can enjoy panoramic views over the Aylesbury Vale, before dropping back down to Princes Risborough. Refreshments: There are two pubs along the route, the Whip Inn (Lacey Green) and the Pink & Lily pub (Parslow’s Hillock) which make excellent stops-off. Alternatively there are pubs and cafes in Princes Risborough. A moderate walk on easy but sometimes muddy tracks and along quiet lanes. One easy climb. New for 2017, the Chilterns Walking Festival invites people to explore the landscapes, locations and legends of The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The spring festival runs from 15th – 29th May, with an exciting programme of walks, talks and special events. Grab some comfy walking shoes and

Health Matters
Arm Pain - Tennis & Golfers Elbow
Pain in the elbow is often due to two main conditions – tennis elbow & golfers elbow, the complaints are often not caused by tennis or golf! Tennis elbow causes pain & tenderness around the outside of the elbow joint, whereas golfer’s elbow causes pain around the inner side of the joint. Tennis elbow is more common than golfers elbow & both are injuries from repetitive overuse or wear and tear from any hobby, sport or activity not just tennis or golf as the name implies. Sometimes a single injury such as a
sudden unexpected tug on the forearm can cause the symptoms. Once the pain starts, your normal activities & habits can maintain the problem. Pre-existing problems with your neck, wrist or shoulder, that might not be painful in themselves, can make it more likely for you to suffer with tennis or golfers elbow. Most cases ease naturally eventually, but many people seek treatment & advice from an osteopath, as limb use compensation creates pain.
OSTEOPATH DAVID GRAY
How can Treatment help with Arm Pain? • David can use a variety of different mobilisation & manipulation techniques, including acupuncture. To ease your symptoms, get to the cause of the problem & get you back to your normal life style. He may gently manipulate the elbow, wrist, neck & upper back joints. • He may offer you advice on which activities & movements to avoid, advice on specific exercises, rehabilitation advice & appropriate elbow brace support or sports strapping. David Gray - Osteopath 01844 354 737 / 07973 297 438 www.davidgray-osteopath.co.uk

Focus
At Families of Children United Support (FOCUS) we provide family and parenting support to some of the most vulnerable in our community and in 2016 we celebrated 10 years as a charity working with the residents of Saunderton Lodge.
None of this would be possible without donations such as the one given by Chiltern View. We offer regular meetings allowing the residents to get together with their children and discuss child care issues, have art and craft sessions, learn new skills or just have some fun. Our project workers are able to listen, play and relate to these families in a caring and nonjudgmental way and thus supporting them in the most important and difficult job of raising the next generation. We also ensure that every new mum 42
gets a baby pack before entering hospital with a selection of baby clothes and personal items. When families are offered permanent housing it is often an exciting and frightening time as they move from a largely protected environment into local communities. Princes Risborough U3A bridge group Date: 6 and 17 March, 3 and 21 April Time: 14.00 Location: Risborough Community Centre (Cherry Baker room) Info: see below Audience: Members or prospective members of U3A Contact: Tony Molesworth 01844 344975 Princes Risborough U3A bridge group offers a way to learn and to play bridge in a friendly, relaxed way. Members include 46
both beginners and those who have played already. Our meetings provide an opportunity to re-examine the hands that you play, and to learn from any mistakes. It is not a duplicate bridge club, and you don’t need to have a partner. You do need to belong to the U3A, although you can come along for a taster session, just to see whether you like it.
There is a table money charge, presently £1.50 per session. The group leader provides some basic training and lots of advice (some good, some lousy!). However, the group is not a formal teaching school. The aim is to get you playing as quickly as possible so that you can enjoy bridge as a social game.
The Bridge Group meets in the Community Centre Club Room, on the first Monday and the third Friday of every month at 2pm.

Risborough Area Community Bus 07941 963097 www.racb.co.uk Drop-off for passengers is in the High Street. Most concessionary passes are accepted. If not most journeys cost only £1.50. CHILDREN aged 16 and under go FREE. Anyone can use our bus, young and old, and a recent passenger survey gave us a 100% satisfaction rating.
Over 20,000 passengers a year now use our “little green bus” that runs daily scheduled “Hail & Ride” services around Princes Risborough and to outlying villages.
Our trained volunteer drivers are well thought of: “these drivers are the most helpful I have been served by for 44 years” said a passenger recently. We make the bus available for use by nonprofit making organisations and groups when not on scheduled service and we run outings each month to places of interest.

Tinnitus
A common symptom of many hearing and ear conditions is tinnitus. Tinnitus is the term meaning sounds or noises that come from inside your body or head rather than from an outside source. Tinnitus can often be more distressing than the actual condition that it is a symptom of. This was certainly the case for Nikki Magrath, who suffered sudden, devastating hearing loss over the course of a weekend. The tinnitus that was a symptom of the damage to the inner ear, was by far the worse element of the whole episode. Tinnitus is nearly always accompanied by hearing loss, and wearing hearing devices certainly seems to help manage the effect of the symptom whilst wearing them. Hearing aids enhance the sounds you want to hear, such as speech and general environmental noises, this in turn lessens the effect of the tinnitus.
What causes tinnitus?
There are many causes of tinnitus. The most common is damage to the inner ear - the cochlea. If there is damage somewhere in the auditory system the brain can try to fill the space with ‘noise’. Damage to the inner ear can occur from exposure to noise, such as going to a very loud music event or gun fire. Sometimes certain prescription drugs cause tinnitus as a side effect. If your outer ear is blocked with wax, this can sometimes make you very aware of tinnitus, as you are no longer hearing everyday environmental noises. Changes in blood flow such as high blood pressure can cause tinnitus and as a result the tinnitus can sometimes be an early warning sign of more serious conditions.
Tinnitus is a complex issue and there is no one miracle cure for the symptoms. The best approach is to offer a personalised support service, a safe place to talk and share Tinnitus is very closely linked to emotional frustrations whilst providing qualified information to help fully stress; it is certainly reported that when stress understand the condition and offer practical tactics and levels are high, tinnitus seems to be solutions that help lessen the negative impact on everyday exacerbated.
