Editors’ Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View Risborough magazine. We do hope you like our front cover of Charlie the donkey at Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary. It’s a fantastic place and well worth a visit. This photo was taken by Timea Megyeri who is one of their volunteers (see page 7). www.donkeyrescue.org.uk. This issue we have some very exciting news that we hope will be welcomed by our readers and by our advertisers. After much thought and considerable Market Research we have decided that, from the July/August issue, we are going to merge our 3 magazines into 1. Many of you may not be aware that for many years we have been publishing 3 local magazines (Villages, Risborough and Thame) – printing and distributing 8000 magazines in each area. We are now going to be
an Coralie & J
merging these into one magazine (printing and distributing 24000 every other month). For our readers, you will now have Community and Events information for your area, and also for the other areas – so if you live in Princes Risborough you will also be able to see what is going on in Stokenchurch and Thame. Even more extensive information will be available online at our website www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk. For our lovely advertisers, we will be able to spread the word about great local businesses to even more local residents and, due to the economies of scale, at a very reasonable price. If you run a business locally and are not advertising with us, why not ask for more information about the area that we will be covering and the many different options for promoting your business.
You can email us at salesvv@live.co.uk or give us a call on 07500 048230.

The Icknield Line opened in 1872, running between Watlington and Princes Risborough. In 1883 it was taken over by Great Western Railway, who added several Halts to the line. It was closed to passengers in 1957 but goods and parcels services continued until 1961. Thereafter the line was used solely to supply fuel to Chinnor cement works until the last delivery in December 1989.

Mr. W. Benton's Cement and Lime Works opened in Chinnor in 1908, but cement making on a truly industrial scale did not begin until 1919. Output of cement from Chinnor peaked at about 5600 tonnes per week in the 1990s. Up to 120 people were employed at any one time.
How to get to the start
By cycle: There are cycle racks outside The village Centre.
The quiet village of Bledlow will seem familiar to fans of the Midsomer Murders TV serial. The church doubles as Badgers Drift Church, and the Lions At Bledlow PH is possibly better known nationally as The Queens Arms!
Chilterns Walking Festival
The Chilterns is defined by its geology, particularly its chalk. Nowhere is the geological richness of the Chilterns more in evidence than on this walk. Richness in terms of the mixture of flower rich grassland, high forest and agricultural land, and in terms of the commercial value of the underlying chalk as a natural resource.
The cement works closed in 1999 and there are plans for the re-development of the site, using the flat areas for housing but also with opportunities for recreation and conservation in the water filled quarries.
For details on places to stay, visitor attractions and other walks, go to www.visitchilterns.co.uk
The first part of the walk follows the bottom of the scarp slope, shadowing the resurrected Watlington Branch railway to the film-set village of Bledlow. The Lions at Bledlow provides the perfect opportunity to take on refreshments and gather yourself for the climb up onto the scarp at Chinnor Hill. The climb up through beech woodland is punctuated by flower rich old chalk pits and holloways; remnants of earlier commerce. The top rewards with extensive views over Oxfordshire and north Buckinghamshire and follows a trackway bordered with a scattering of pits and small quarries from the quarrying of flint.
The scale of chalk extraction for cement making can be seen from a short walk along the Ridgeway National Trail. The Ridgeway runs on a high causeway between the large quarries, giving views of the pits through the boundary fences. (Do not cross over or through the fences).
Just a mile from Chinnor the Peacock is a country inn and pub which welcomes walkers and cyclists.
A steep descent to the ancient Icknield Way, now part of the Ridgeway National Trail, provides the opportunity to divert and fully appreciate the commercial importance of chalk and its surprisingly valuable legacy.

Walking gets you fit and keeps you healthy!!
Chinnor Hill Nature Reserve The walk is through one of the most interesting areas of the Chilterns with a rich mix of industrial heritage, secluded gardens, panoramic views and sites of interest for their geology and their natural history. The walk holds special interest for steam railway enthusiasts and fans of film and television!
Walking out from the village centre on a variety of routes of increasing length, staying low to begin with and working up to the steeper slopes, is an effective, rewarding and pleasurable way to get fit.

Lord Carrington's wonderfully tranquil Lyde water garden is open to the public daily from 8 till 8 and is just past the church. The garden is fed by springs arising from the chalk which formed pools once used as watercress beds.

A 5.5 mile circular walk through beechwoods, chalk hills and a stretch of The Ridgeway National Trail. The walk offers a rich mix of industrial heritage, panoramic views, nature reserves and sites of geological interest. Steam railway enthusiasts and fans of film and television will find particular appeal along the way. The walk starts in Chinnor, a large village which sits at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. Industries based in and around Chinnor have included lacemaking, chairVisitoragriculture Information and, making and until 1999, a cement works whose tall chimney was a wellknown local landmark. Empower yourself - Learn more about how hearing technology can keep you connected to the world and help to keep your brain active
Auditory Processing The eyes are often referred to as the gateway to our soul - perhaps then we could think of the ears as a gateway to the brain! From the moment we are born the input from our auditory system is shaping our neural pathways. So we must not ignore this fact as we age. If the brain stops receiving auditory signals such as speech and conversation, social isolation is a likely consequence and this is seen to be a significant factor in early onset dementia. It is mishearing that can age a person not the wearing of hearing aids Recent reports show that 81% of hearing aid users are satisfied with their devices, but this goes up to 91% for people with instruments less than one year old. This shows how far hearing aids have come, and how advances in technology are improving people’s lives. The old fashioned view is that hearing aids age you - but the truth is - it is mishearing that ages you and those who empower themselves by using state of-the-art hearing technology are keeping young and connected for longer - which has to be a good thing! Hearing Technology has made great leaps forward in the last few years, opening up new possibilities for its users. Just as our mobile phones have become smaller, shinier, and more advanced than ever before, huge developments have also been made for hearing aids. With new functions, better processing and more cosmetic designs, hearing devices now offer some of the most innovative wearable technology available today.
Connectivity - helping to keep you connected Many hearing aids can be paired with a smart-phone. This means more control than ever before for the user, allowing hearing devices to fit in with the rest of your technology and your busy lifestyle. Bluetooth technology, allows hearing aid wearers to stream sounds from the television directly into their aids, meaning volume can be set for personal needs without disturbing anyone else watching. Look no hands Hearing Technology offers complete hands-free options, so you can hear the phone call directly in both ears via the hearing aids at the right level, providing much better clarity. Apple or Android The made-for-iPhone hearing aids offer very simple solutions for connectivity and android phone users have the option to download free apps, turning your phone into a remote control for your aids, allowing you to adjust volumes, switch to special programmes for certain sound environments and use directional speech focus technology - all controllable discreetly with your mobile phone in real-time. Speech in background noise One of the greatest challenges for people with hearing loss is hearing speech in noisy environments. It is still one of our most challenging areas, but the options available now do make the very best of any situation. We also encourage people to train themselves to become better lip-readers and crucially, better listeners. There is an art to listening well and we can all practice these techniques to help support the hearing technology.

With the tip of the knife, score a border in each pastry square about 1cm in from the outer edge. 3. Top each pastry square with some of the roasted pepper strips and cheese slices. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden and the cheese has melted. Serve warm with the salad leaves.

Devey Tree Care
Trading for over 7 years, Devey Tree Care offers a variety of services to care for your trees, from complete tree removal to planting. Devey Tree Care is a family run tree surgery business based in Thame, Oxfordshire. With a background in conservation and arboriculture, head arborist and business owner Owain Devey, can provide expert advice as well as highly skilled tree work. “Owain and his team were excellent. We originally contacted Devey Tree Care about carrying out some crown reduction work. It turned out to be very fortunate that we did, as Owain spotted that one of our trees was showing the early signs of a fungus infection which would have eventually brought down the tree!
From start to finish Owain was a pleasure to deal with, and we would definitely recommend Devey Tree Care. Thank you!” Sam & Lucy Haddenham Devey Tree Care prides itself on providing the best possible service to its customers and can guarantee excellence in arboriculture. Risborough Area Community Bus
A Very Local Success Story
Back in 2010 when the Risborough Area Community Bus began its service, no one could have anticipated what a huge success it would become. But seven years later and with a smart new Mercedes Sprinter 16 seat bus, the “little green bus” is an integral part of life in and around the Risboroughs. Starting with only 70 passenger journeys in the first week, the bus now averages 1800 journeys per month, operating a six day a week, timetabled service, covering the Risboroughs, Longwick, Bledlow, Kimble and Speen. When there are no scheduled services, the bus runs regular lunch trips, garden centre trips and private hires. The bus is entirely operated by volunteers and some of the original team of thirty or so drivers are retiring from duty and we need more drivers if we are to continue to develop our service and meet increasing demands. Awards received include a Certificate of Recognition from Community Impact Bucks and a Quality 24
Mark from the Community Transport Association, one of only three awarded to services carrying fare paying services.
Typical quotations from passengers: “I don’t know how I could manage without the bus” “If it weren’t for the bus I would need to move” “I love travelling on the bus, everyone is so friendly” Our volunteer drivers are given full training to Minibus Driver Awareness Safety Scheme standards and optional first aid training. Driving hours are very flexible and driving is a happy experience. So, come and join us. Email: racb@talktalk.net Website: www.racb.co.uk Facebook: @risboroughareacommunitybus

Health Matters
OSTEOPATH DAVID GRAY
Foot Pain
Walking is the safest, easiest form of exercise, so why should you bother reading up on the risks? If left ignored, foot pain or leg pain can become a chronic problem, affecting or affected by our bodies, above the feet! The foot & ankle is made up of a number of small bones interconnected by ligaments & tissues all working together to give the strength, stability and flexibility the foot & ankle needs to function properly. Common conditions of the foot & ankle areas which can give rise to pain include: Acquired flat foot, Plantar fasciitis, Achilles pain, Sprained ankle.
Acquired flat foot – when the inner side of the foot or inner arch flattens. Symptoms can include, pain, swelling, change in foot shape & knee pain or swelling. Often, people who have Plantar Fasciitis describe it as a sharp pain, most often under the heel or instep of the foot. Heel pain is a very common foot problem. The sufferer usually feels pain either under the heel or just behind it (Achilles tendinitis), where the Achilles tendon connects to the heel bone.
Sprained ankle. Typically, the result of a sudden twisting or “going over” on the ankle joint. Typical symptoms are swelling, bruising, pain & instability of the ankle. Osteopathic with Acupuncture Treatment is dependent on the diagnosis & specific to any individual. We can use a variety of gentle techniques to increase the mobility of the joints & the flexibility of the muscles in the foot. Equally David will often look at the foot mechanics, as the underlying cause of; knee, hip or lower back issues. David Gray - Osteopath 01844 354 737 / 07973 297 438 www.davidgray-osteopath.co.uk

Vet’s Corner
to breed but generally from the age of eight to ten.
Young at heart – The advantages of health screening for the older pet. Our young, lively pets let us know quickly when they are ill. When they are older, this can be much more difficult and confusing to spot as changes creep in, almost unnoticed, over time. We, as vets, advise that you take your pet’s ageing seriously, as certain conditions become more common as the years go by. It is good practice to have an annual health screen from the age of eight for cats. For dogs this will vary according
Your vet or nurse will take a history, perform a thorough physical examination, analyse a urine sample, offer blood screening (easily achieved with minimal stress) and blood pressure monitoring. health screening has three aims: 1. To prevent disease by identifying and reducing risk factors – obesity, high blood pressure, incorrect diet, etc. 2. To manage and prevent deterioration of current disease – such as overactive thyroid gland, diabetes,
chronic kidney and liver disease, osteoarthritis. 3. To help achieve the best quality of life in the remaining years – dental disease is present in 85% of cats over 5 and 95% of dogs over 8. It might be worrying but is better to know what can be done. Remember there is no such disease as, “just old age”. Dr Mandy Elgin BVMS MRCVS

Askett Nurseries
If you’ve often thought about growing vegetables, but have never got around to it, why not give it a go this year? There is one crop that is relatively easy to master, and will supply you with an excellent crop - Tomatoes. There is still time to grow your tomato plants from seed, they will germinate in just a couple of weeks, and once potted on into a 9cm pot, will romp away. If you want take a short cut, and start with a ready growing plant, now is the time to come in and make your choice. And there is the first decision you must make. There are dozens of different tomato varieties, from the small sweet cherry fruit such as Gardeners Delight to the big slicing beef types such as Big Boy. If you have a greenhouse then you can get going now, tomato plants are tender and will not tolerate a frost or cold weather. Growing in a greenhouse means, as long as you can keep it frost free on a cold clear night, your plants will soon mature and you will be able to harvest your first tomatoes in July. If you are planning to grow your plants outside, wait until any threat of frosts have passed, the end of May is usually a good time. 40
The three most popular ways to grow your plants are in a growbag, a planter (which is a jumbo growbag) or in a decent sized pot, something like a 3 litre is ideal. Growing in a growbag is fine, as long as you keep a very close eye on watering. Your compost must stay moist, and the one drawback of using a growbag is there isn’t a great deal in it, so watering every day is a must. The planter is a better bet, there’s a lot more room for your plants to thrive, and you can get away with missing the occasional day with your watering can. Growing in a large pot using multipurpose compost gives you a lot more room, meaning water can be retained for a lot longer. One way of growing that has become very popular and great for children to get involved, is growing the variety Tumbling Tom in a hanging basket. Your plant will trail over the side bearing small sweet fruits. Once the first flowers begin to show you should start to feed with a liquid high
potash fertiliser, something like Tomorite is ideal. When your plants have grown to the roof of the greenhouse, it is best to remove the main growing stem above the top truss. Although tomatoes are relatively easy to grow, there are a few things to take onboard to prevent any problems. As I’ve already mentioned it is vital to get the watering right. Letting the compost dry out then flooding it means that you run the risk of your fruit splitting, or you’ll get dark patches on your fruit which points to Blossom End Rot. If you are growing outside and the weather turns wet and cold, Tomato Blight can affect your crop, so keep a close eye on your plants to ensure they stay healthy and strong. We all enjoy growing tomatoes at the nursery, so if you would like some more advice, do pop in. See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell
and all at Askett Nurseries.

We were recently asked, what are the most popular destinations for 2017? Spain, Italy and the Canaries remain high on the list, but increasing numbers of travellers are venturing further afield with the biggest growth seen in cruising – both river and ocean. So what is the appeal of this growing type of holiday? Could it be that you can meander along the rivers of the world or set sail on the oceans, visiting popular ports and sampling the delights of each destination which might determine whether you return for a longer stay in the future. Maybe it is the amazing standard of cuisine that you will find on most cruise ships, where every meal is another gourmet adventure, or could it be the luxurious surroundings you enjoy with a glass of wine on deck taking in the scenery around you; the best of all – cruising offers fantastic value for money! Now let’s explore some of the wonderful places you can visit. RIVER CRUISES Each day is spent meandering through sublime scenery, dotted with fairytale castles, lush vineyards, medieval towns and hillside villages. There are optional guided coach and walking excursions, providing an insight into the local culture, architecture and history. Excursions are, of course, optional as you may prefer to sit back on the sundeck and watch the world go

by, but then you may be wondering what you are missing. The most popular cruises are The Rhine and The Danube with visits to Nuremberg, Budapest, Amsterdam and Prague to name a few. Choose a 7 or 8 day shorter cruise or up to 16 nights if you really want to explore. Let’s not forget The Douro (for Portugal) and The Volga (for Russia) where you can enjoy the wonders of these two wonderful countries. OCEAN CRUISES The world is your oyster – amazing destinations travelling on state of the art ships – the ultimate in luxury. If you have never cruised before, you can now take a sampler cruise for a couple of nights to see if you enjoy the experience! We are pretty certain you will. Life on the ocean wave really is an exhilarating experience – you can choose one of the smaller ships where luxury and personal service are second to none, or cruising for families, where great value for money can be had with deals for children travelling with adults. Many of the ships have Kids and Teenage clubs, featuring activities such as climbing walls, wave machines and many more so your kids are never bored! Choose The Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean or the Far East, all of which are now at your fingertips. CRUISING IS A DELIGHTFULLY AFFORDABLE OPTION – for expert advice and to get a quote call Spear Travels – specialists in cruising.

Relationships
This month’s books are all about relationships, from first loves and families to fleeting friendships. Lucky Boy
Marthe Jocelyn
Shanthi Sekaran
Mexican Solimar risks everything to start a new life in America, but as an illegal immigrant she has few rights. When she’s thrown into a detention centre, her son is placed in foster care. Kavya is an American-Indian chef desperate for a child. When she’s given Solimar’s toddler to care for it seems like a dream come true. One boy – two mothers, both of whom will do everything in their power in order to keep him. An emotional rollercoaster of a read, this looks set to become one of this year’s bestsellers.
The Lonely Hearts Hotel Heather O’Neill
Pierrot and Rose grow up together in a Montreal orphanage. They bond over a shared love of entertaining people, but go their separate ways as teenagers. Reunited years later, they set out to realise their childhood dream of running their own stage show. Their path isn’t an easy one, however. They both have demons to face, and Rose’s wants her dead. A highly entertaining read, with beautiful, lyrical prose and characters you’ll be rooting for from the beginning. 46
A Big Dose of Lucky (Secrets) When the Canadian orphanage they live in burns down in 1964, seven teenage girls set out to discover the secrets of their pasts. Seven authors have each chosen one girl’s story to write. The result is the Secrets series. In A Big Dose of Lucky, Malou heads to a small town in Ontario, hoping to find her birth parents. Malou is mixed race, shy and desperate to fit in. The truth of her birth may give her the family she craves, even if it’s not the one she imagined. An enjoyable read that will leave you eager to read the rest of the series.
A Gentleman in Moscow Amor Towles
The gentleman of the title is Count Alexander Rostov. Following the Russian Revolution, the Count is sentenced to house (or in this case, hotel) arrest, indefinitely. Given work as a waiter in the hotel restaurant, he forges close friendships with some of the other inhabitants. While his view is mainly confined to what he can see out of his tiny window, Rostov is able to observe and ruminate on a tumultuous Russia over the course of four decades. You’ll savour every word.
My Sweet Revenge Jane Fallon
When Paula finds out her husband is having an affair, she decides to win him back – so that she can be the one who breaks the marriage up. She befriends his mistress, Saskia, and sets out on a mission to lose weight, get fit and become the woman he wants. Paula recruits Saskia’s husband, Josh, to help and together they set out to make the cheaters’ lives a misery. An easy read that’s perfect for lazy sunny afternoons.
See You in the Cosmos Jack Cheng
11 year old Alex loves everything to do with space. So he builds a rocket and sets off for a rocket festival in Mexico. His plan is to launch his rocket into space, attached to an iPod on which Alex is recording his thoughts and feelings about his family and the people he meets on his journey. While it’s been catalogued as a children’s book, See You in the Cosmos definitely has crossover appeal. Fresh, imaginative and full of energy, this is perfect for fans of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Abingdon Air & Country Show Sunday 14th May year’s show under the new guidance from the CAA and MAA, the Civilian and Military Aviation Authorities but this year there seems to have been even more work for Neil and our aviation experts to consider.
For the past two years we have given you an insight into the helicopters, the crews and the kit they use but this year we thought we would give you some idea of what we do to put the show on. The show is a charity event, raising money for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and takes about 6 months to prepare although some aspects can take much longer. Once the debrief is over mid-year we are back on it again looking out for acts that would appeal to our visitors and, in Neil Porter’s case listening to flying display pilots who believe their aircraft should be at our show next year! As we get closer to the show everything ramps up from advertising and publicity to ticket distribution to our outlets, from taking bookings for traders and classic vehicle owners to doing all the paperwork you need to put on a show like ours. PostShoreham we got through last
The decision has been taken to move the show through 180deg. For those that have been to the show before you will be on the eastern side of the airfield facing west, meaning our displaying aircraft will fly over a far less densely populated area. What we have to do now is prepare the airfield and any work that needs doing is done by us and we pay £11,000 for the privilege! By the time you get to us everything will be done and we hope to have another exciting day for all the family. As well as all the usual attractions we welcome the following:On the ground we have The Mangelwurzels and Britain’s Got Talent contestant Ellie May joining us in the music tent. In the arena we have the Buckingham Search and Rescue Dogs and the Cotswold Pheasant and Poultry Club have a stand. From today’s Army, 3 & 4 Regiments RLC, No. 7 Rifles and RAF 4624 Auxiliary Squadron, RAF Brize Norton will give presentations. We also offer a very special welcome to No. 322 Sqn Royal Netherlands Air Force with their highly advanced Spitfire
www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk
Simulator, make sure you speak to them and have a go! It is the same in the air as Classic Jets Model Aircraft get us off the ground, followed by first time displays by a replica CAC Boomerang making its UK debut, the RF4 Motorglider, the Antonov AN2 the world’s biggest bi-plane and the Great War Display Team. Rich Goodwin will display his ‘Muscle Pitts’, a much altered Pitts Special doing things a plane shouldn’t do! Amongst the many other displays we also welcome for the first time the DeHavilland Sea Vixen, a 1950s Royal Navy carrier-borne jet aircraft.
We hope you will have a great day with us! For your chance to win a family ticket to the show: Please answer the following question and email your answers by May 10th to salesprv@live.co.uk Name the 1950’s Royal Navy jet booked to appear at the show?
