Editors Letter Welcome to the February issue of Princes Risborough View magazine. It is strange how we all talk about the weather a lot but it has definitely been strange! Last year was one of the wettest on record and over Christmas and even into the New Year, it was still incredibly damp and mild. The ground is still extremely muddy and for those of you with dogs (we all do in the office here); you will know how dirty they get and how difficult it is to keep everything clean when you get them home. We are actually lucky here though and we need to spare a thought
for all the poor people who have been affected by floods, so for their sake lets hope the rain holds off for a bit. Hopefully by the time you all read this issue, little signs of spring with be on the way with some snow drops and crocuses. It would be nice to have some cold, crisp days with lots of sunshine to make us all feel brighter. Aside from the weather, it’s the romantic month of the year with Valentines Day coming up. We thought we would celebrate it with a beautiful picture of swans making a heart shape or perhaps some very clever photography? We weren’t sure but we loved the picture anyway.

Recipe of the Month
Satay Vegetable Skewers Serves 4, Ready in 30 minutes
If you are short on time but still want a flavoursome supper then try these delicious vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce and spring onion noodles. For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred. Ingredients: • 100g crunchy peanut butter • 25g creamed coconut, chopped • 1/2 tsp chilli powder • 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed • 4 tbsp soy sauce • 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 4 thick slices of aubergine • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 4 nests fine egg noodles • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced
has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary. 2.
Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 pre-soaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges.

Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs. Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.
Tip: If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a pre-heated grill or use a heavy-based shallow frying and add a little oil.
Method: 1. Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut 8

Understanding RA and being positive, taking control of our well-being and finding the help and support that’s available. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the fluid surrounding the joints. It affects about 400,000 people in the UK. It can affect adults of any age but most commonly starts between the ages of 40 and 50. It does seem to run in families although our genes don’t cause RA, only the likelihood of developing it. There is some evidence that lifestyle may affect the risk of developing the condition. It is more common in people who:

• Smoke • Eat a lot of red meat • Drink a lot of coffee What happens with rheumatoid arthritis? As the fluid in the joint becomes inflamed the membrane surrounding the joint becomes stretched and can’t hold the joint in its proper position causing it to become unstable and deformed. The inflamed fluid can also erode the bones of the joint and the cartilage becomes thin. What are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis? Symptoms of RA tend to come and go. When the joints become inflamed and painful it is known as a flare up. Common symptoms include:• Joint pain and swelling • Stiffness • Tiredness (fatigue) • Anaemia • Flu like symptoms, feeling generally unwell Which joints are affected? RA varies from person to person, but usually starts slowly. The fingers, wrist and feet may be among the first joints to become uncomfortable and people with RA often find their joints are stiff first thing in the morning. How is rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed? There are 2 tests that can help in confirming the diagnosis. These are: • Blood tests • X-rays and other scans
Blood tests detect changes in the body produced by inflammation. These tests are: • Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) • C-reactive protein (CRP) Blood tests can also show if you are anaemic and may be used to detect rheumatoid factor – an antibody produced by a reaction in the immune system. However, a diagnosis can’t be based on rheumatoid factor alone. X-rays will show any damage to the joints or any changes taking place due to the inflammation. What treatments are available for RA? Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve (NNR)
A new way of working It was nearly a year ago when reserve staff thought it would be a good idea to strengthen the existing relationships with the local community by involving them in the development of a new creative interpretation project for the Nature Reserve. The idea developed further, ensuring that the Talking Trail would be in keeping with the site, focusing on the key wildlife species and human history that make the National Nature Reserve (NNR) so special. We then approached a local Community Interest Company (CIC) Outdoor Culture, and funding was granted from Heritage Lottery Fund to make the project a reality. Outdoor Culture took charge of producing the trail, supported by Natural England staff, bringing together the chosen community groups and schools with artists to create the six finished pieces. Working with a CIC was a new experience for the reserve and it worked really well. This project was supported by the reserve’s local Advisory Group and has added to our existing partnership with the Chilterns Conservation Board. The launch of the trail took a break from tradition, and was officially opened by children running through a chain of
cardboard figures. The event welcomed Natural England’s local partners from all aspects of our business, to come along and discover the Talking Trail. Feedback was extremely positive, with lots of promises of help with promotion of the trail, and many said they were inspired by the approach. Visitors commented on how in keeping with the surroundings the sculptures were; which were made of wood harvested from the reserve as part of woodland management or from local National Trust sites. Reserve manager Mick Venters commented “The project has enabled the community to leave a real legacy on the reserve; this is very much their trail. It also brings a new dimension to the visitor experience with both interactive sculptures and the audio element adding
to the sensory experience of trail. The latest bespoke audio players are incorporated within the sculptures, each with six different channel options to keep it flexible, including a story trial, challenge trail and song trail, as well as the “My NNR” channel, where participants of the project share what makes the reserve special for them.” The fact that the project has been lead by local children and their families, working with professional artists and reserve staff is a really good example of how much can be achieved by working in partnership. Truly inspiring! Next time you are driving through the famous ‘Vicar of Dibley’ cutting on the M40 at Junction 5, call in on the reserve and take a look for yourself.

On December 18th last year, the Princes Risborough and District U3A Photographic Group held their annual photo competition and Jan and I were kindly asked to go along and judge the entries. We were very honoured to be asked and also a little nervous, as neither of us has any qualifications that would qualify us to make this important decision. The Presentation

This was actually more difficult than we thought though as all the entries were extremely good and of a high standard. We did narrow it down and eventually chose an action shot of a canoeist which we felt captured the essence of

The Princes Risborough and District U3A Photography Group are always looking for new members and meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, at 10am, in the information centre. They are a small but very friendly group who very much base their emphasis on the practical side of photography, so will often spend the time outside taking photographs and sharing their knowledge with one another. Sweet Peas
Who can resist a huge bunch of sweet peas freshly cut from a garden? Their beautiful colours and delicate summer fragrance are a delight in any home. You can enjoy vase after vase of them all summer long for the price of a packet of seeds, and a little weekly maintenance. The professional growers who show them at horticultural events will have already got things underway by sowing their seed in the autumn, but there is still plenty of time to choose your varieties and make an early spring sowing. The choice on offer can be overwhelming, but one thing is for sure they are all stunning. If you fancy having a go at showing them, choose the traditional ‘Spencer’ type, they grow with long straight stems, exhilarating fragrance, and colourful fancy blooms. There are also plants which flower extra early, which tend to be very floriferous, their stems bearing 5 or 6 large blossoms. If you haven’t really got the space to grow them in the ground, all is not lost, there are some really delightful hanging basket varieties, one of the best is Sugar ‘n’ Spice , guaranteed to brighten your containers, and no need to 46
pinch out. A new innovation is a dwarf variety, you can grow a low hedge, or use as summer bedding, the neat bushy little plant is called Bijou mixed, why not give it a go. When you’ve chosen your variety you can get cracking straight away. Soak the seeds overnight in warm water and then sow 1cm deep, 3 seeds per 7.5cm pot, in a free draining damp seed compost. If your lucky enough to have a propagator, put them in at 68-77F or seal them in a polythene bag and put on sunny windowsill. Germination takes 7 - 21 days. Once the second pair of leaves has appeared you can pinch out the growing point, this will encourage strong, bushy plants. When the weather has warmed up a bit, you can plant them out in spring, choose a sunny position, with a trellis or support that they can cling on to. At Askett Nurseries we always plant some into large
pots, with an obelisk for them to scramble up, this would make a lovely focal point in any garden or on a patio. As soon as they start to flower, start picking, they will flower all summer long, especially if you give them a little TLC. A weekly dose of a high potash fertiliser and regular watering will prolong flowering, and just keep an eye out for any aphids, greenfly can be a problem, so spray them with an insecticide as soon as you spot any. If this is the first year you grow sweet peas, or to give them their correct title, Lathryrus odoratus, I guarantee you’ll be growing them for years to come. They truly are the most stunning and rewarding plant. Now is also the time to get your Seed Potatoes going, and once the soil has dried out, you can sow the first Broad Bean - Aquadulce. Princes Risborough Heritage Society The Risborough Heritage Society’s meeting for February is a talk given by Paul Green called ‘The Secrets of the Saunderton Gap.’ The meeting will be held on February 12th at the usual venue of the Princes Risborough School in Wellington Avenue and it will start at 8pm. 1st Princes Risborough Scout Group We are seeking a new leader for our Cub group which meets weekly from 6.30 – 8pm on Monday evenings during term-time and caters for boys and girls from 8 to 10½ years. We are also seeking to fill the role of Group Scout Leader (GSL). The Group Scout Leader is the volunteer manager of the Group, providing leadership and support to the other adult volunteers. They ensure that the adults are well managed and have the resources needed to run their sections. The time commitment for the GSL position is flexible. Whilst some knowledge or experience of Scouting would be advantageous for both roles, just having a keen interest and a ‘can-do’

Risborough Rangers Football Club
Locally, members of Princes Risborough Miniaturists’ Group meet at 7.30 every third Thursday in the month at the Community Centre in Princes Risborough, and welcome anyone who wants to become involved. At their monthly meetings they share their knowledge and expertise, discuss ideas through workshops and projects. The main emphasis is on enjoyment, and developing skills that can be used in the hobby. Between the members there is a wide range of expertise and all enjoy the challenge of developing a new or forgotten skill. February 15th Valentine’s Day Tea Dance: 2:30pm - 4:30pm Admission £3.50 I would just like to thank on behalf of Risborough Rangers Football Club (Senior Section), all the local businesses in the town that have displayed over the last 2 seasons our monthly match day posters on their premises. With your valuable help we have gained top position of the attendance chart in the South Midland League, Division Two, with an average of 70 plus. We are proud of our loyal following, and would also recommend to any keen football followers to come and visit our home ground of Windsors, Horsenden Lane, Princes Risborough. Admission on match days is £2 for adults and £1 for children/OAPs (including programme) and for reserve games this is reduced to only £1. In addition, there is free admittance to watch the U18s youth team play on a Sunday well worth a visit! We now have a large covered main stand with seating for over 60 people along with a well stocked tea bar (with the best burgers in Bucks), an additional covered stand holding 20/25 supporters, Clubhouse/bar and free car parking. I am sure you will be impressed with our facilities in a lovely part of leafy Bucks. Hope to see you soon at “your local football club” as we aim to move upwards and onwards. 53
